Performance in Numbers: Oxford proves he can cut in the big leagues as West Brom ponder move

[ad_pod ]

If you cast your minds back to a summer afternoon in August 2015, you might well see a baby faced Reece Oxford containing the threat of a player who at the time was one of the best creative midfielders in the world.

The player was Mesut Ozil and he was busy being pocketed by the youngster who has since unfortunately not lived up to expectations.

However, like a certain Jadon Sancho, Oxford is a trailblazer for young English footballers.

The defender has gone away and refined some of his skills in the Bundesliga, first with Borussia Monchengladbach and then also with Augsburg. But he could now be on his way back to England.

The Telegraph have suggested that with a permanent move to Augsburg stalling, West Brom could swoop for the 20-year-old.

It’s a transfer that could see him reunited with former manager Slaven Bilic who of course has just taken charge at the Hawthorns.

Their initial time together may not have been particularly beneficial for either party but Oxford is now a more mature and disciplined player than he was under Bilic previously.

He’s still an incredibly raw individual but it’s a potential signing that could be game-changing for their promotion hopes.

Reflecting upon the numbers Oxford produced during the eight times he played in the Bundesliga last term, there is some huge promise to be seen, especially from someone who has still only played 28 senior matches.

The statistic that stands out most is the number of fouls he makes per game. At a rate of 0.5 per match, it shows he has a tremendous amount of discipline for someone so young.

If you compare that to the current members of Albion’s backline, it isn’t bettered by anyone, something that supplements the huge role he could have as the club look to achieve promotion next term.

Craig Dawson made 1.1 fouls per game in 2018/19 whilst Ahmed Hegazi made a further 0.8. Kyle Bartley also made 0.9.

As a result, it’s evident that Oxford would offer a more calming nature among the defence, an attribute that was lacking under Darren Moore.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

Two other areas that particularly catch the eye are the number of clearances and long passes he makes.

The two stats are near in tandem with each other and to put things into perspective, only Hegazi who made 6.1 clearances per match completed more than the West Ham man did in the Bundesliga.

Oxford did play far less, but it gives an insight into what he can bring to the Hawthorns.

Kiko Casilla praised on Instagram after impressive training video

[ad_pod ]

Kiko Casilla had a turbulent opening to life at Leeds United in the 2018/19 campaign.

Keeping Bailey Peacock-Farrell out of the starting XI during the final months of the season, the Spaniard managed to play a total of 17 games last season and conceded 18 goals in that period.

He managed to keep five clean sheets but high-profile mistakes, such as the one which allowed Derby back into the play-off semi-final, tarnished his reputation somewhat.

However, he was looking sharp in his latest

/BzJTCR2hMiU/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram video, in which he showcased his skills on the training ground.

Needless to say, it soon attracted plenty of attention from around the footballing world.

Most of the comments were from his fellow compatriots and many of them were there to shower the goalie with praise for the outstanding training routine he displayed in the video.

The likes of Lucas Vazquez and Borja Mayoral were the first on the scene.

But they were not the only ones. Rivals, friends and colleagues soon arrived into the comment section to gush over the flying stopper.

Many of the comments from La Liga players, like Luca Zidane, Zinedine Zidane’s son and fellow goalkeeper, and Sergio Garcia from Espanyol.

Zidane emphasised how Casilla was like a plane in the air and Garcia told him he looked like a little boy simply having fun on the pitch.

Borussia Dortmund’s Achraf Hakimi told him that he was simply on a different level, and looking at the video, that is certainly not far from the truth.

Crystal Palace fans happy as Liverpool to stop Mignolet joining the Eagles

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace fans on Twitter have shown their relief after a report by ESPN saying that Liverpool won’t sell Eagles target Simon Mignolet for £8m.

The Evening Standard reported on Tuesday that the south London outfit were lining up an £8m move for the Belgium international, with arch-rivals Brighton and Hove Albion also keen.

However, ESPN later said that the Reds have no intention of letting the 6 ft 4 stopper go for that price, and that they expect the 31-year-old to remain at Anfield this summer.

A move for the former Sunderland man would have been slightly confusing on Palace’s part, seeing as they already have Vicente Guaita and Wayne Hennessey fighting for the number one jersey at Selhurst Park.

Eagles supporters on social media clearly feel that either Mignolet isn’t good enough or he isn’t a priority addition this summer given their positive reactions to the transfer update, with one saying “at last, some good news”, and another simply saying “phew!”

If Palace sell Wan Bissaka and Zaha, will they be in another relegation battle? One fan gives his opinion in the video below…

Unsurprisingly, one individual also brought up the club’s need for a new striker, with Michy Batshuayi and Jordan Ayew both due to return to their parent clubs following loan spells from Chelsea and Swansea City respectively.

Crystal Palace fans not impressed by Gary Cahill interest

[ad_pod ]

Some Crystal Palace fans are unhappy about their club being linked with former Chelsea and England defender Gary Cahill.

According to The Sun, the 33-year-old has also attracted interest from West Ham, Aston Villa and Leicester, with the latter seeking to replace Harry Maguire as interest from Manchester United continues.

The ex-Bolton centre-back was out of favour at Stamford Bridge for much of last season, playing just eight times in all competitions.

And after his contract expired at the end of June, he was one of five Blues players who left the club.

Now Eagles boss Roy Hodgson is said to be after the Champions League winner – a move the fans at Selhurst Park are not best pleased about.

Are Crystal Palace right to slap a £100m valuation on Wilfried Zaha’s head? Check out the video below to see why they are…

Palace recently received £50m from Man United for full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and it would seem that influx of funds means the club’s supporters are expecting bigger names to be signed than Cahill, who played just twice during the 2018/19 Premier League campaign.

Here is just some of the reaction from fans on Twitter:

West Ham unlikely to move for Costa this summer

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United have little interest in signing Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid this summer, per ClaretandHugh.

What’s the word?

The ex-Chelsea striker has been linked with a return to the Premier League after scoring just twice in La Liga last season and Everton have been credited with an interest.

A report from the Daily Mirror claimed that the Hammers were also keen on bringing the Spain international back to England.

But ClaretandHugh, the trusted West Ham news source, insists that the club are not set to bid for the 30-year-old.

They quote a source who says: “I can’t see that happening. He has shown he can cause issues and perhaps he’s not the player he once was.”

An alternative lined up?

West Ham had better have a decent alternative, here.

Costa has scored goals at the highest level throughout his career and won two Premier League titles during his time at Stamford Bridge, netting 58 goals in 120 appearances for the Blues.

There can be few strikers with as much talent available this summer.

The Mirror do not mention a fee but there will seldom be such a player on offer in the transfer window.

As it is, the Irons currently have just Javier Hernandez and Jordan Hugill up front.

They need to strengthen and a deal for Costa would set the Irons apart, having signed one of the most fearsome forwards in Europe.

This is a baffling decision, then, unless the Irons somehow find a more accomplished forward.

Spoiler alert: They won’t.

Newcastle fans react as Sky Sports journalist confirms Joelinton interest

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Newcastle fans have been reacting to the club’s swoop for Joelinton, as Sky Sports journalist Pete Graves confirmed he thinks the deal will happen.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle have a deal “in place” for Hoffenheim’s Joelinton, who scored ten goals and added five assists last season.

The Northern Echo have also claimed potential new manager Steve Bruce has sanctioned a swoop for the 22 year-old, and now Graves has chimed in too.

The Newcastle-based Sky Sports reporter says there is something in the reports, as opposed to the usual nonsense flung out by Mike Ashley’s PR machine, and that he believes a deal will happen.

Of course, the Toon Army have endured a horrific summer so far, seeing their beloved manager walk out the door and not a single new signing arrive, so quite a few aren’t buying this.

Others however are already giving their verdict on the player himself, and it seems the links have riled the fans as they are not impressed by his goalscoring record. Take a look at some of the best fan comments down below…

Arsenal must resist sending Reiss Nelson out on loan again

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Sun, Arsenal’s highly-rated prospect Reiss Nelson is the subject of another proposed loan move to the Bundesliga next season, with Hertha BSC keen on taking him back to Germany.

What’s the word?

Having impressed on a season-long loan at Hoffenheim, Nelson returned to Arsenal and publicly admitted that it was his intentions to try and force his way into Unai Emery’s thinking for the first-team.

However, the report claims that Hertha are interested in bolstering their forward-line for next season and have lined up a possible loan swoop for Nelson; it adds though that Emery will have the final decision on whether to allow the England U21 international to enjoy another campaign in Germany or to stay and fight for a place at the Emirates.

Nelson’s time

Speaking back in June, Nelson revealed that he felt he had improved markedly from his time in Germany and vowed to showcase his abilities as a more “mature” footballer at Arsenal.

He said:”I learned a lot of stuff. I made a lot of friends, and also I made a good connection with the managers. They taught me a lot of stuff that I can take on in my career. It was difficult, leaving, but Arsenal are my team and I want to go back to Arsenal and play.

“I have got a bit bigger. I was playing at Arsenal when I was 17, when he (Wenger) gave me my (first league start) debut against Southampton (April last year), so I was very immature when I was playing. Now I have a more mature role about me. I look to play link-up play, one v ones, and I think I am more mature.”

The 19-year-old’s pace and directness as a winger are attributes that the Gunners sorely lacked last season, something that has been a major reason behind their chase to sign Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha.

But as the north London side seemingly baulk at the Eagles’ valuation of the Ivorian, Nelson should surely be the main beneficiary if the Gunners fail to get a deal for Zaha over the line.

The winger scored seven times in 23 Bundesliga games last season, showing he certainly has an eye for goal. Emery’s use of him in pre-season has suggested that the Spaniard sees him as part of his plans for next season, and that undoubtedly is the smart move for all parties.

West Ham fans discuss Mark Noble alternatives for club captaincy

[ad_pod ]On Sunday night, a number of West Ham United fans took part in an interesting debate on Twitter regarding the captaincy at the club.Club icon Mark Noble will once again wear the armband in the new season, but there might well be occasions where the 32-year-old is not in the XI.Indeed, the midfielder did miss seven Premier League matches during the 2018-19 campaign and there will be added competition during the new season. Many of the West Ham fans responded when a fan account claimed that Fabian Balbuena should be the skipper when Noble is not in the team for one reason or another. It would be fair to say that not too many agreed with the Balbuena suggestion, but many offered up alternatives, with Declan Rice, Jack Wilshere and Lukasz Fabianski being mentioned as possible suitors for the captaincy.Watch West Ham United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Joe Willock is Arsenal’s one to watch this season

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s One to Watch series, which focuses on those players we think are particularly worth keeping an eagle-eye on as the 2019/20 season unfolds.

Joe Willock has enjoyed plenty of game-time in pre-season, starting in the number 10 role against Lyon in Mesut Ozil’s absence.

All the signs point towards the youngster finally making a breakthrough and getting more minutes at the Emirates. So, what’s his story and what can we expect from one of the latest products of the Arsenal academy?

The story so far

Willock has actually been flirting with a role in the first-team for a few years now, having played in pre-season two years ago under Arsene Wenger, and enjoying a few cup and Europa League appearances since.

The youngster made his first appearances in line with Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah, who are arguably two of the hottest prospects to emerge from the Gunners’ youth system.

With that, Willock struggled to make an instant impact, putting in good, but not sparkling, performances.

The next season saw the midfielder enjoy plenty of action and goals to accompany it as his performances in Premier League 2 yielded 12 appearances with him hitting the back of the net six times.

He then brought this form to the Arsenal first-team for one game in particular, a 3-0 win at Blackpool in the FA Cup, where he scored two goals.

That was to be the young midfielder’s only appearances for the first-team before being brought on in the Europa League final, where despite Arsenal’s dreadful performance against Chelsea, he raised the Gunners’ performance and almost scored a goal himself.

What could 2019/20 hold for Willock?

The amount of pre-season game-time would suggest that Willock is primed for a place in the first-team and will be used regularly when Emery sees fit to do so.

Ozil has looked like his old self and Emery may opt to build his side around the German, but the English youngster can expect a lot more game-time for the Gunners’ first-team than he enjoyed last year.

With Arsenal in the Europa League, after the agony of missing out on Champions League qualification, the north Londoners may well find themselves an opportunity to blood more youngsters, give fringe squad players a chance to find form, test new tactics and formations and give the first-team a rest.

If he’s not starting in the league, then don’t be surprised to see Willock play a key role in Arsenal’s European campaign.

First-team appearances could come in the form of substitute appearances, whilst there might be starts in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup and rotation call-ups as the calendar hits December and January.

Willock should certainly expect to play a big part in Arsenal’s upcoming campaign, acting as a similar-level replacement when one of the starting midfielders of Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Dani Ceballos are unavailable.

Check out 5 things you need to know about Arsenal’s new man William Saliba in the video below…

What would be a successful season?

As long as Willock is in contention for the first-team, making appearances off the bench and starting in cup competitions, the midfielder will have had a breakthrough season. He’s a rare midfielder in that he loves both the attacking and defensive side of the game and has played in both roles for his club.

He may be seen as a long-term replacement for Aaron Ramsey, but with Dani Ceballos in for a year, Willock can ease his way into the XI and enjoy his exposure to the first team as he learns from seriously talented players around him.

The target for him should be to become the player Emery is more than comfortable enough to call upon when needed, not the man who starts week-in week-out.

It would be a tremendous achievement if he became a first-team regular, but just being in the manager’s plans is more than good enough.

Willock should target…

Appearances = 20

Starts = 15

Manchester United fans react as Marcos Rojo misses out on deadline day move to Everton

[ad_pod ]

So after an Old Trafford exit seemed likely, Marcos Rojo will be staying put at Manchester United for the time being.

Reports earlier had claimed Everton were in talks with the Red Devils over a potential late swoop for the Argentina international, but Sky Sports have now confirmed that a prospective move is dead in the water.

The report claims the Toffees pulled out of negotiations to sign Rojo after they “baulked” at the fee demanded by United, and as such, the centre-back will not be plying his trade for another Premier League side anytime soon.

After hearing the news a possible move had fallen through, United fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter and many were seemingly frustrated by the update.

Some supporters of the Manchester side simply suggested it is no surprise to see yet more “deadwood” remain at the club and even revealed they didn’t blame Everton for taking the decision to bow out.

Indeed, a few even claimed the Toffees are “lucky” in missing out on Rojo’s signature and labelled the 29-year-old as an “incompetent child”.

Check out some of the reaction of United fans below:
