AVFC touted for summer transfer exits

Aston Villa have shown over the past few years just how capable they are when it comes to spending money on bringing new players to the club such as Emi Buendia, Danny Ings and Lucas Digne to name just a few of their more recent recruits.

With the summer transfer window set to open for business at the end of the season, it seems as though a clue has emerged as to what the Villans could be looking to do during the window.

What’s the talk?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Dean Jones had this to say about Villa and what he thinks they will be doing during the summer window.

He said: “I think there will be quite a lot of exits at Villa. I think that [Steven] Gerrard will almost demand that because he needs to get a grip on this squad and have it reflect his own identity and personality.”

Fans will be buzzing

Taking into account how the Midlands club moved a number of their current players out on loan deals during January such as Matt Targett, Anwar El Ghazi, Trezeguet and Wesley among others, these are the sort of players that would seem the likeliest to be sold on a permanent basis in the summer if they aren’t likely to be regular first-team players.

If those did depart permanently, then fans would surely be delighted considering their previous exploits in the Midlands.

With the likes of Trezeguet and Wesley only managing to score a combined total of 15 goals in 90 appearances for the club between them, there’s a good chance that they not be seen as having the sort of attacking quality that is needed for the current Villa boss to reach his ambitions of taking the club into Europe.

Seeing this sort of ruthlessness and getting rid of some of the deadwood currently on the books at the Midlands club would also presumably make a lot of fans happy as well, especially if better-quality players come in to replace whoever leaves.

However, even some of the individuals currently in the squad could be in danger of getting moved out if they don’t fit in with Gerrard’s plans or aren’t seen as being of good enough quality to play for the club.

If Villa are looking at getting rid of a significant number of players during the summer, this surely suggests that they would then need to look at bringing some new faces in as replacements. That is an eventuality that would surely excite supporters as they gear up to see who joins the club in what would be Gerrard’s first summer transfer window as their manager.

Having been linked with mega-money moves for midfielders Yves Bissouma and Wilfred Ndidi this summer, if the Villans are able to pick up as much money as they can from selling their deadwood, they could then use whatever money they pick up to fund a move for either of those two players.

Leeds want Djordje Mihailovic

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch wants to make CF Montreal midfielder Djordje Mihailovic his first signing, Manuel Veth reports.

The Lowdown: Mihailovic profiled

Mihailovic is 23 years of age and is primarily an attacking midfielder who can also play in a deeper role. He is a brilliant playmaker, with one journalist labelling him a ‘gorgeous passer’.

He has been with Montreal since December 2020 and has made 38 appearances for the club, scoring five times and registering 15 assists.

The USA international will be into the final 18 months of his current contract in the summer, and it seems as if Marsch wants to bring his countryman to Yorkshire.

The Latest: Leeds links

Transfermarkt journalist Veth shared Leeds’ interest in Mihailovic on Twitter.

He labelled the midfielder as ‘fantastic’ and claimed Marsch wants to make the player his first signing at Elland Road.

“Leeds United want Djordje Mihailovic. Mihailovic has been in fantastic form for CF Montréal last year and has continued his form this season in the Concacaf Champions League. Marsch wants to make the USMNT midfielder his first signing at his new club.”

The Verdict: Realistic target?

Marsch has a job on his hands to steer Leeds away from trouble, with the club just two points clear of the relegation zone with 12 games remaining.

However, even if the unthinkable happens, you’d expect Mihailovic could be a realistic target for the Whites in either division due to the player’s meagre £4.5m Transfermarkt valuation.

The Whites never made a permanent midfield addition during Marcelo Bielsa’s three-and-a-half years in charge, and that area of the pitch could do with bolstering in the summer, so Mihailovic could be an exciting addition going off his impressive assist record in the MLS.

Newcastle learn Trippier latest

Newcastle United are currently enjoying a rich vein of form with the Magpies winning five of their last six Premier League matches. However, they are still without one of their key players in Kieran Trippier.

The right-back signed from Atletico Madrid in January has missed his new side’s last three league games having suffered a metatarsal injury against Aston Villa last month.

Although he won’t be back soon, head coach Eddie Howe has revealed the latest on the Englishman’s recovery.

What’s the latest?

Speaking to the media ahead of Saturday’s 2-1 win against Brighton, Howe said: “Kieran’s done well. He’s had his stitches out on his foot. He’s making good progress, we’re happy.”

The 31-year-old has already scored twice in black and white and has quickly become one of the Geordies’ most important players, making his progress very pleasing news for the Toon Army.

Fans will be relieved

Fans will certainly be buzzing that Trippier is making good progress after the 31-year-old’s electric start to life in the North-East.

The Englishman has netted twice from right-back, both goals direct from free-kicks, and has certainly been a catalyst to Newcastle’s major upturn in fortunes.

With the defender, the Magpies have conceded an average of 0.6 goals per game having shipped an average of 1.82 goals a match under Howe without Trippier.

The right-back has certainly made an instant impression on Tyneside and his absence leaves a gaping hole on the right-hand side of the defence with backup options Emil Krafth and Javier Manquillo far inferior alternatives.

Krafth started against Brighton on Saturday and, in fairness, produced a decent performance with SofaScore handing the Swede a 7/10 performance rating.

However, in 11 Premier League appearances this season, the 27-year-old has kept just one clean sheet and averages 1.1 tackles and interceptions per game whilst winning just half of his duels.

Although it seems likely that the right-back won’t return for a couple of weeks still, the fact that Newcastle will have Trippier back fit before the end of the season will be a major boost as they look to ensure survival as quickly as possible.

After Saturday’s victory, the Magpies are 14th, seven points clear of the drop zone with 12 matches to go, putting them in a very healthy position.

AVFC eyeing Wijnaldum transfer move

Aston Villa have been one of the busier clubs when it comes to being active in the transfer market and bringing new players to the club for significant amounts of money.

They have also shown that they are capable of attracting big names to Villa Park such as Philippe Coutinho, who joined the club on a loan deal from Barcelona until the end of the season back in January.

Looking ahead to the upcoming summer transfer window, it seems as though Johan Lange is eyeing up another potential deal that could be put in the same vein as their recent swoop for Coutinho.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from Sport (via The Sun), Villa are lining up a £21m summer transfer move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

During spells with Newcastle United and Liverpool, the Dutchman racked up 217 appearances in the Premier League with 27 goals and 16 assists under his belt.

Another masterclass?

Having spent so long in the Premier League, the majority of which was spent with Liverpool, before making a move to one of Europe’s big clubs in PSG, it’s easy to see why this potential swoop for the 31-year-old could be seen as a similar sort of deal to the one that they secured with Coutinho.

Labelled as a “beautiful” player by Jurgen Klopp, Wijnaldum could be the answer that Gerrard was looking for in January after the Villans were unable to bring a central-midfielder in.

They tried and failed missing in a bid to bring Rodrigo Bentancur to Midlands and reportedly had a bid rejected for Brighton enforcer Yves Bissouma.

Also, with the Midlands club being linked with £50m moves for Wilfred Ndidi and Bissouma again in the summer, the PSG figure, who is currently picking up a hefty weekly wage of £180k-per-week according to Salary Sport, would be a cheaper option if they secure him for the £21m fee that has been reported.

Since signing, Villa’s Brazilian recruit has managed to score three goals and provide three assists in just seven league appearances, making himself the highest-rated player at the club in terms of his overall performances according to WhoScored.

Thus, if his former Reds teammate decides to make a return to England with the Midlands club and ends up having a similar sort of impact, this would surely be another brilliant piece of business from the Villans.

Celtic: Agbonlahor’s Brown prediction

Scott Brown will ‘definitely’ return to Celtic ‘sooner or later’, talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor has said.

The lowdown

The 36-year-old sits seventh on Celtic’s all-time appearance list with 620, having spent 14 years at the club between 2007 and 2021.

It was announced in March 2021, while John Kennedy was in interim charge of The Hoops, that Brown would leave Parkhead at the end of his contract and take on a player/coach role at Aberdeen.

However, a year later, he agreed to prematurely end his spell at Pittodrie and is now thought to be considering his options.

The latest

Agbonlahor has said that Brown would be a ‘perfect’ addition to Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff, but cautioned that he may still want to continue playing for the time being.

The ex-Aston Villa striker told Football Insider: “Oh, it would be perfect to have him on the coaching staff. To have him on the bench with the manager would be perfect. But we don’t know what he’s thinking.

“He still might have a year or two left in him playing. But sooner or later he will definitely be back at Celtic.”

The verdict

There’s no doubt that Brown is a legend at Celtic. In addition to his lofty appearance tally, he boasts a mighty haul of 22 trophies from his time in Glasgow, including 10 Premiership titles.

It’s no surprise, then, that Ange Postecoglou said recently that ‘there will always be an open door here’ for Brown, who left a ‘massive legacy’ and ‘will go down as one of the greatest ever’.

The £540,000-rated midfielder may still have something to offer as a player, having started 23 league games for Aberdeen before his exit from Pittodrie. In those appearances, he averaged 3.3 accurate long balls, 1.8 clearances, 1.5 tackles and 1.5 interceptions.

However, a report from Sky Sports suggested that he was looking ‘to focus his efforts on becoming a manager’.

Rather than working in the shadow of Postecoglou, perhaps he will hope to prove himself elsewhere and potentially earn a crack at the job when the Australian moves on from Parkhead.

West Ham targeting Nikola Milenkovic

West Ham United have once again been linked with Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic, with the Irons reportedly having the sights set on securing a transfer this summer.

What’s the story?

Italian outlet Corriere Fiorentino reported (via Sport Witness) that the 24-year-old previously had a contract which was set to expire this June, which duly alerted the east London outfit to push for a deal which ultimately didn’t happen.

Instead, the Serbian signed a one-year contract extension with the Serie A club, committing his services for the short-term future but having a gentleman’s agreement regarding the opportunity to leave the following summer.

West Ham are now back in contention to try and finally bring the defender to the London Stadium.

West Ham must sign Milenkovic

Previously dubbed ‘the new Vidic’, there has been plenty of hype surrounding one of Europe’s most exciting defenders over the last 18 months, but Fiorentina have so far been able to hold onto Milenkovic.

The £75k-per-week centre-back has made 25 appearances in the Italian top flight this term, with Fiorentina currently eighth in Serie A.

Having made the move to Florence from Partizan Belgrade in July 2017, the Serbian has made 163 appearances for La Viola but is yet to experience European football with the Italian outfit.

Adding a defender will likely be a priority for West Ham manager David Moyes, particularly if the east Londoners secure European football for another season.

Craig Dawson has established himself as the Scotsman’s first-choice, with the likes of Angelo Ogbonna, Kurt Zouma and Issa Diop battling to partner him in defence, but the former suffered an ACL injury in November.

If the Irons are to once again juggle four competitions next term, adding greater squad depth will be crucial. Moyes’ side still have eight Premier League matches left to play, in addition to a Europa League quarter-final against Lyon as they look to secure European qualification once again.

Regardless of how West Ham end their season, securing the services of Milenkovic this summer after numerous failed attempts would be a huge boost for the Hammers and would certainly make Moyes’ selection in defence a more pleasant headache, with the Serbian likely to line up alongside either Dawson or Zouma as the first-choice centre-back pairing at the London Stadium.

With a better aerial duels record (3.2 per game), more tackles won (1.6 per match) and a superior passing success rate (90.2%) compared to the Irons’ current centre-backs, Milenkovic is a player who Moyes would surely love to have at the London Stadium.

Leeds: Raphinha being eyed by Arsenal

Leeds United are in deep bother of losing a number of their first-team stars this summer.

Kalvin Phillips has been linked with an exit from Elland Road but one man that can’t keep the speculation away is Raphinha.

What’s the word?

Reports over recent months have suggested that the Leeds winger is being courted by Barcelona ahead of a possible summer switch.

However, another club have now entered the race to sign him in the shape of fellow Premier League outfit Arsenal.

That’s the news according to Fabrizio Romano who took to his ‘Here We Go’ podcast on Tuesday to reveal the following information:

“I can tell you that Arsenal also ask for information about Raphinha of Leeds. Barcelona are leading the race for Raphinha. But also Arsenal ask for information for Raphinha.”

Fans will rage

If Leeds do stay up under the guidance of Jesse Marsch and look to build towards next season, losing undoubtedly their best offensive player will come as a huge blow, one that will no doubt leave supporters full of rage.

Marsch is yet to take charge of the Whites during a transfer window and watching the Brazil international head for pastures new would not be the most ideal of ways to begin his summer.

Raphinha was signed from Rennes in the summer of 2020 and has been simply breathtaking for Leeds since being acquired by Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine has a keen eye for talent and together with Victor Orta, the 25-year-old has become one of the club’s best buys in recent memory.

His estimations have soared since coming to the Premier League, helped by some simply stunning football. Not only is the winger capable of working hard for the team and pressing relentlessly, but his qualities on the ball are marvellous too.

He has scored 15 times and registered 12 assists in the top-flight of English football, with nine of those strikes coming this term alone.

As a result, Leeds would be drastically worse off without him. Indeed, it’s not too unreasonable to suggest that they’d be heading for the Championship without a prayer if he was not fit or even at Thorp Arch this season.

Consequently, they must do all they can to hold onto him. Admittedly it feels like a difficult task but everyone associated with the club will be rather upset if he does depart.

Combine that with speculation surrounding Phillips and this summer is looking a bleak one for the Yorkshire side.

Remembering West Ham’s chase of Wesley Fofana

West Ham are facing a crisis situation at centre-back, with Kurt Zouma’s off-the-field actions, Angelo Ogbonna still recovering from a long-term injury, and just out-of-favour Issa Diop available as back-up, after manager David Moyes switched to a back-three formation in recent games.

Aaron Cresswell, Ben Johnson and Declan Rice are all also capable of playing in the three, but the club will be ruing their decision to have not brought in Leicester star Wesley Fofana last season, who would have fitted the system so well and provided some much needed squad depth and competition for a starting spot.

Back in September 2020, the Hammers were desperate to land the French defender according to Sky Sports, having had a number of bids knocked back, including their final £33m offer, which was also rejected by Saint Etienne.

Not long after, the exciting young prospect completed a move to Leicester City for £36.5m – with their payment plan more upfront than the Hammers’ proposed deal, leaving Moyes and the London Stadium faithful feeling frustrated.

Averaging a 7.00 match rating according to SofaScore in his debut season in England, Fofana became a fan favourite at the King Power Stadium, winning praise from the likes of teammate James Maddison, for his combative and composed performances at the back.

“He’s a real top young player, I don’t want to speak too highly of him in case people are listening!” said the English midfielder in an interview with BBC Sport.

“He’s very good and he’s settled in very well. We have a fantastic defender in Caglar Soyuncu who is sat on the bench at the minute and can’t get in the team because Jonny Evans’ experience is priceless and Fofana looks solid as a rock at 20-years-old.

“Hopefully is form can continue because he’s a big player for us at the minute.”

With that in mind, it’s hardly a surprise that he could now be valued in the region of a whopping £68m by future suitors.

After suffering a horrible fractured leg injury in pre-season last summer, he has just returned for the Foxes and already made a critical contribution in his first game back, scoring the all important goal against an in-form Rennes team to take Leicester through to the next round of the UEFA Conference League.

Winning nine out of 13 duels as well as making five clearances, two tackles and two interceptions in just 78 minutes on the pitch, the Frenchman also earned praise from manager Brendan Rodgers, who said of his return after the game: “That’s a top player’s mentality, he’s such a top prospect. Now he’s just got to try and build his fitness up. He was exceptional.”

Despite his injury issues and time out, it remains clear that West Ham missed out on one of the world’s top U21 defenders, and if Moyes had the player who Arlo White dubbed a “beast” at his disposal, the Irons may just have found themselves a little closer to Champions League football than they already are.

Ranking The 10 Best South Africa Football Players Of All Time

South Africa launched themselves onto the global football stage when hosting the 2010 World Cup and boast some of the most iconic players in African football history.

One-time winners of AFCON, Bafana Bafana have a special spot in football fans’ hearts thanks to that 2010 tournament, whether it be the sound of the vuvuzelas, the memory of K’naan’s Wavin’ Flag or the string of high-profile players to emerge from the country down the years.

But who is the greatest South African footballer of all time?

10 Siphiwe Tshabalala

Siphiwe Tshabalala racked up 90 caps for South Africa during his career, scoring 12 times, but his influence spans far beyond the numbers on the stat sheet courtesy of his stunning opening goal at the 2010 World Cup.

The versatile winger was part of the squad for three different AFCON campaigns, and was also nominated for FIFA’s Puskas award for that memorable strike against Mexico.

Known for his direct style of play, brilliant crossing and a wand of a left foot, he spent the majority of his club career at Kaizer Chiefs, winning the South African top flight twice during his time with the famous club.

9 Teko Modise

Teko Modise is one of the greatest PSL player of all time and starred for the national team during the late 2000s and early 2010s.

Part of the COSAFA Cup winning team of 2007, he was a perfect box to box midfielder, capable of linking play with his ball-carrying or creating chances with his passing.

His performances at AFCON and World Cup tournaments showcased his confidence and technical ability, and like Tshabalala his influence goes far beyond the pitch, as he was one of just ten worldwide players selected to wear a limited edition Nike Mercurial SuperFly boot alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Didier Drogba.

8 Itumeleng Khune

Itumeleng Khune is widely regarded as the nation’s greatest goalkeeper of all time.

His international legacy is defined by longevity and memorable tournament performances, representing the country at AFCON tournaments and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

His ball-playing ability, shot-stopping and leadership from the back were critical during periods when Bafana Bafana relied heavily on defensive stability.

Khune was also a three-time PSL winner with Kaizer Chiefs and the league’s player of the year in 2013.

7 Percy Tau

Percy Tau’s international impact is still growing, but his influence in recent years has been significant.

He has become a central figure in Bafana Bafana’s attacking setup and played a crucial role in South Africa’s third-place finish at the 2023 AFCON, scoring once in that campaign.

Tau’s performances at club level also reflect the modern evolution of South African football, becoming one of the few to play in the Premier League with Brighton and in the UEFA Champions League with Club Brugge.

6 Jomo Sono

Playing during an era when South Africa was isolated from FIFA competition, Jomo Sono’s career is not defined by statistics.

He became an unofficial global representative of South African football through exhibition matches and international leagues.

When Bafana Bafana returned to international football, Sono’s influence helped bridge generations, famously scoring four goals in a match against Argentina and serving as a player-manager and caretaker manager on multiple occasions.

At club level, Sono played for several iconic clubs in South Africa and the United States, while his son Bamuza later represented Bafana Bafana as well.

5 Steven Pienaar

Former Everton star Steven Pienaar

Steven Pienaar was a consistent and reliable presence for Bafana Bafana across several generations and has one of the most impressive high-level club careers of any African player, appearing in the Premier League over 200 times and in the Champions League on 27 occasions.

He represented South Africa at the FIFA World Cup and multiple AFCON tournaments, eventually captaining the national side.

While his club career often drew more attention, Pienaar’s versatility, work rate and leadership were vital in stabilising the national team during transitional periods, with 61 caps to his name.

4 Neil Tovey

Picture a good old fashioned defender and you picture Neil Tovey.

Racking up over 600 club appearances in South Africa, his international importance extends beyond his footballing ability. As captain of Bafana Bafana during the 1996 AFCON win, he led the team through pressure-filled matches with composure and authority.

His role as the first white captain in the post-apartheid era gave his leadership deep symbolic meaning, reinforcing unity at a crucial moment in the country’s sporting history, playing over 50 times for his country and captaining the side in more than half of those.

3 Doctor Khumalo

The man with the most appearances in Kaizer Chiefs history, Doctor Khumalo performances at club and international level make him one of the greatest African players of all time.

His influence on the national team was built on control, creativity and intelligence, starring in midfield for nearly a decade. He was the creative heartbeat of the 1996 AFCON-winning side and a key figure in the 1998 AFCON final run.

Khumalo helped shape how Bafana Bafana were perceived – as a technical, intelligent footballing nation – and helped bring African football to a global scale, selected as an MLS all-star for his performances with Columbus Crew.

2 Benni McCarthy

Benni McCarthy is South Africa’s greatest goalscorer of all time, racking up 168 domestic league goals throughout a club career spanning 18 years and five countries.

As Bafana Bafana’s all-time leading scorer with 31 strikes in just 79 caps, he delivered in major tournaments and qualification campaigns, playing a key role in the 1998 AFCON silver medal and multiple World Cup appearances.

McCarthy gave South Africa a genuine world-class striker presence in international competition, and at club level won league titles with Ajax, Porto and Orlando Pirates.

1 Lucas Radebe

Lucas Radebe remains South Africa’s greatest footballer largely because of what he represented and delivered at international level.

As captain of Bafana Bafana, he was the defensive cornerstone of the historic 1996 AFCON victory and a leader during South Africa’s reintegration into world football.

His performances against elite international opposition, combined with his reputation on the wider football stage courtesy of over 200 appearances for Leeds United, left a lasting impact on African football as a whole.
