Hazard receives plaudits from fans after Chelsea brace

A mixture of joy and slight relief would have been felt by most Chelsea supporters on Wednesday night when the team overcame Manchester City 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Even though Antonio Conte’s men have been leading the Premier League title charge for five months, a seed of doubt was planted after last weekend’s shock defeat to Crystal Palace.

The Blues knew that if they lost to City and Tottenham Hotspur defeated Swansea City, then their lead would be cut to just four points.

They managed to avoid that, though, as they managed to see off Pep Guardiola’s side on home turf, largely thanks to Eden Hazard.

The Belgian international, who has found the form that earned him PFA Player of the Year in 2015, scored both of the Blues’ goals – one in the 10th minute and the other in the 35th.

Sergio Aguero found an equaliser with 26 minutes on the clock, but City were unable to come from behind for a second time after Hazard sealed his brace.

Fans took to Twitter to praise their number 10.

Carragher surprised by Luiz performance at Old Trafford

When Chelsea brought David Luiz back to Stamford Bridge from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, it would be fair to say that eyebrows were raised following the Brazilian’s struggles in the Premier League during his first spell in England.

Luiz has returned a more mature figure, however, with the centre-back’s performances playing a key role in Chelsea rising to the top of the Premier League this season.

The 29-year-old disappointed during Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat away to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, but former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, believes that there was a reason for Luiz’s struggles at Old Trafford.

He said:

“I think he’s been outstanding this season. I’ve been a massive fan of his. I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he looked like he was injured or he may have been sick the night before.

“Something just wasn’t right with David Luiz from minute one. I think I said two or three months ago he could be in line for Player of the Year.

“We all ridiculed the signing when he first came in and I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that maybe he’s been carrying a knock. Something wasn’t right but that was not what we expect from David Luiz this season.”

Luiz has played over 2500 minutes of Premier League football for Chelsea this season, scoring one goal in the process. He has been a revelation since returning to England, although Sunday’s performance would have been concerning to the club’s supporters.

The gap from leaders Chelsea to second-place Tottenham Hotspur is now just four points with six games to play, and the Blues will need Luiz back to top form if they are to land the Premier League title this season.

In Focus: Chelsea eye £25m-rated defender; would be another one for the future

According to reports in the Daily Star, Chelsea are eyeing a move for £25m-rated Sporting Gijon defender Jorge Mere.

Who?

Despite being just 19 years of age, the Spain Under-21 international has become a regular for the La Liga outfit at centre-back this season and has made more than 50 league appearances for the club since making his professional debut in 2015.

Mere has played at every youth level for his country, and is expected to be a regular in the senior team in the future.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Sporting Gijon are currently five points from La Liga safety with just seven matches of the season remaining and if they are relegated, then Mere will be in demand.

The story suggests that Valencia would be the frontrunners for the defender’s signature, but that Chelsea could hijack the move as Antonio Conte is keen to bring in a new centre-back this summer.

How has he done this season?

Even though his side has struggled at the wrong end of the table, he has done well and has shown why he is so highly-rated.

The 19-year-old has made 24 La Liga appearances this term, and has shown his defensive awareness by making 101 clearances and 51 interceptions.

He has also shown his confidence on bringing the ball out of defence by completing all of his nine take-ons, while he has a passing accuracy of 82%.

Where would he fit in at Chelsea?

Out on loan?

All jokes aside, if the youngster did move to Stamford Bridge he would probably be sent out temporarily to get the regular first team football that wouldn’t be on offer in the first team.

With Cesar Azpilicueta proving to be such an impressive and consistent performer during his Chelsea career, the Blues would hope that his compatriot could make a similar impact.

The £25m price tag seems steep?

As with a lot of players in European leagues, Mere had the £25m release clause inserted into his contract which is due to run out in 2020, but Sporting would likely accept a lower offer if they are relegated to the Segunda Division.

Chelsea fans want more game time for Nathan Ake

Chelsea fans are confident that Nathan Ake will be a star of the future at Stamford Bridge after his cameo appearance against Everton on Sunday.

The Dutchman, who can play at the back or in a defensive midfield role, spent the first half of the season on loan at Bournemouth.

He started eight Premier League games and came off the bench twice, and also featured on two occasions in the EFL Cup.

As well as carrying out defensive duties, Ake scored three top-flight goals for Bournemouth, but his progress at the Vitality Stadium was halted when Chelsea recalled him in January.

Despite manager Antonio Conte bringing Ake back, the 22-year-old has played in just four games in all competitions since returning to West London.

Three of those outings were in the FA Cup and his first league appearance for Chelsea this season came on Sunday when he replaced injured David Luiz in the 82nd minute of a 3-0 win over Everton.

Ake was only on the pitch for the last eight minutes, but the fans were left impressed by his performance.

Ex-Everton defender urges Barkley to leave

Former Everton defender Richard Dunne has advised Ross Barkley to make the jump from his hometown club and move elsewhere.

The midfielder’s future appears to be uncertain after manager Ronald Koeman recently claimed that his player has until the end of this week to sign a new contract.

The Dutchman has confirmed that a deal is on the table for Barkley, who came through the ranks at Everton as a youngster.

Barkley’s reluctance to sign it suggests that he is considering his options, but it seems as though the Toffees are clear in their stance.

Koeman has reiterated publicly that Barkley will be sold this summer if he does not put pen to paper on a new deal.

The club clearly do not want to run the risk of the midfielder running down his current contract and leaving for nothing at the end of next season.

Dunne, who began his career at Everton and spent four years in the first team before leaving for Manchester City, has given his opinion on the situation.

He told talkSPORT:

“There are a few players at Everton that have gone into their comfort zone and maybe a change would be the best for both sides. Certainly for Everton they need a bit more freshness in their team and maybe Ross does, in terms of getting a new club, having to earn a place in a team and not have the comforts of being at home and living in his hometown.

“Maybe he needs to go out and challenge himself and start trying to progress and get a place back in the England team.”

Was the perfect gem chucked away with the rubbish when Poch took over at Spurs?

Tottenham may have made a mistake. But that’s not a surprise. In the past, they have made lots of mistakes.

Between the Harry Redknapp years when they won qualification to the Champions League in 2009 and the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs have always threatened to break into the ranks of the elite without ever managing to. Until now.

The signing of Pochettino certainly was not a mistake. And yet, some of the early challenges the Argentinian manager faced point to a club more or less in a mess – even if it turned out to be a mess with huge potential.

Pochettino arrived at White Hart Lane in the summer of 2014, which was the same time that Gylfi Sigurdsson left the club, engineering his own move to Swansea City. And although it looks like a classic case of a new manager deciding to get rid of a player he doesn’t fancy, Pochettino had nothing to do with the Iceland international quitting the club. Sigurdsson was fleeing a team who didn’t seem to actually want him.

If they now want him back now, however, well that wouldn’t be much of a surprise either.

The danger of two successful seasons on the spin for a young team getting better every week is that it becomes hard to think of areas where the squad particularly needs to be strengthened. Clearly depth is a problem. But bringing in ‘depth’ is harder than it looks: the best players don’t want to come to sit on the bench, and those who are willing to fight for places or accept a role as second choice aren’t often the best men for the job.

There’s also the danger of overpaying for a player who simply adds nothing in the end because he’s no better than what you’ve already got: Moussa Sissoko springs to mind.

But that just shows how big a job Pochettino has done. From a team who sold Sigurdsson without any input from their manager – perhaps significantly, Pochettino was only the ‘head coach’ at the time, but has since had his title changed to ‘manager’, hinting at a greater role in such matters – Spurs have now become a team formed in their leader’s image. The transformation has been vast, but ironically, it might just be a player who was already part of that mess Pochettino inherited who could take the club to the next level.

Perhaps the only part of the squad where ‘adding depth’ doesn’t mean adding second-string reserves is the attacking midfield section. In defence – including defensive midfield – and attack, stability is often key: strikers like Kane grow in confidence the more they start scoring, whilst defensive partnerships are the bedrock of the team. Attacking midfielders, wingers and creators, however, can be changed around depending on the game.

Against sides who sit deep and look to play on the counter attack, the need for pacey wingers is nullified and the creative maestros with vision and passing quality become all-important. Against a team who hold a high line, pace becomes more important. And being able to choose between all of these options in the middle of a game is vital.

That’s something Spurs don’t have, currently. If they’re losing, or if they need to unlock a defence, they can’t always rely on Kane – mostly because they can’t always get the ball to him in the right areas. The start of the last two seasons have been characterised by too many draws, and ultimately that’s what’s cost Tottenham genuine title challenges. The stability isn’t a problem. Sometimes the spark is.

And whilst Alli and Son have proven their worth as creative, attacking players, the only real ‘creator’ in the side is Christian Eriksen. But when it comes to the stats, Gylfi Sigurdsson matches him – all the more impressive when you consider that he’s done it from a relegation-threatened side.

This year, Tottenham’s most potent assister / striker combination has been Eriksen to Kane, a partnership which has yielded six goals. That’s the same number as the collaboration between Swansea’s Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente. And yet, Spurs scored 86 goals to Swansea’s 45. The number may be the same, but the proportion is vastly bigger.

The fact that they do a similar job for their team is significant, too. Eriksen took 94 shots from outside the box this season, more than any other player. But Sigurdsson came second on the list. Only Sergio Aguero took more shots in total than the Dane this campaign, but once again Sigurdsson isn’t far behind, coming fourth on the list and ahead of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Diego Costa.

When it comes to assists, Eriksen has 15 to Sigurdsson’s 13. Both are beaten only by Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne, who has 18.

Interestingly, though, when you break down where the assists have come from, Sigurdsson has eight from crosses. That’s hardly surprising given that six his 13 assists – almost half – have been to the same player: the aerially dominating Fernando Llorente. But exactly half of De Bruyne’s 18 have come from crosses, too. And that certainly doesn’t involve Sergio Aguero or Gabriel Jesus dominating defenders physically. Eriksen himself has six assists from crosses – only Sigurdsson and De Bruyne have more.

What that shows is how accurate balls played in from wide areas – where there’s more space – are now key to breaking down stubborn defences. Crosses don’t necessarily mean you have to be good in the air, but they do mean you have to show good movement. Manchester City, Swansea and Spurs all have strikers whose best qualities include clever movement in the penalty area.

Spurs have looked like a different club since the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino in 2014. Three years on, they are becoming an established Champions League club, having entered the competition two years in a row, and are one of the most exciting teams in the country, to boot. Ironically though, amongst the manure emptied upon Pochettino’s arrival, the perfect gem may well have been hiding.

In Focus: Signing Niang a risk for Everton, but one worth taking

As reported by The Daily Star, Everton are hoping to make a £16m move for AC Milan attacker M’Baye Niang this summer.

What’s the story?

The Toffees have already made some big signings in the close season with Jordan Pickford and Davy Klaassen joining Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park.

Now they’re looking at another big move and, according to The Daily Star, are prepared to spend £16m on M’Baye Niang after he made the breakthrough in the Premier League on loan at Watford last season.

Niang’s promising ability has been hampered in recent years but a move to Everton, where he can find a permanent home and a manager who believes in him, could be the making of the player.

The answer for Everton?

Everton fans are hoping for next-level signings this summer that can potentially turn them into top four contenders.

In that sense, signing Niang may be something of a disappointment considering he’s never really shown a consistency in his career that proves he is capable of being a star for a top four side.

Making 16 appearances in the Premier League last season for Watford, he showed flashes of brilliance, scoring 2 goals and assisting 2 more .

Still just 22, the argument that Niang shows plenty of potential is strong and at a club like Everton may have the room to breathe a little and develop as a expert first teamer.

At the reported £16m, his signature may be seen as a risk but it could be one worth taking for the long-term benefits.

Transfer Focus: Two Manchester United targets set to leave Real Madrid this summer

According to AS, Zinedine Zidane is preparing a major clear out at Real Madrid this summer, with as many as seven players set to depart the Bernabeu, including Manchester United targets Alvaro Morata and James Rodriguez.

What’s the Word?

Following their second consecutive Champions League victory, Real Madrid are ready to overhaul their squad with as many as seven players set to leave the Spanish Champions this summer.

Portuguese international defenders Pepe and Fabio Coentrao are expected to leave the club, with the former reportedly set to join PSG and the latter Sporting on-loan.

Brazilian star Danilo could also leave in search of first team football, with Inter Milan reportedly interested in the 25-year-old. Goalkeeper Keylor Navas could also leave the club, if a deal with Manchester United stopper David De Gea is reached.

However, it is the likely departures of Alvaro Morata and James Rodriguez which will most likely attract the interested of Manchester United fans.

Both players have been linked with moves to Old Trafford this summer, with Rodriguez reportedly in advanced talks with Mourinho over a transfer and Morata emerging as a major target for the Europa League winners.

Will both players sign for Manchester United?

Despite much speculation linking United with Antoine Griezmann in recent months, the transfer embargo placed on Atletico Madrid places significant doubts over that deal.

James Rodriguez may be the most likely man to join United from Real Madrid. With the Colombian seemingly frozen out in the Spanish Capital and Mourinho looking to significantly bolster his attacking options, the 25-year-old moving to Manchester is a significant possibility.

On the other hand, Morata may be considered too much of a gamble, considering the reported asking price of £50million.

Liverpool fans would rather club sort defence instead of moving for Mbappe

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to urge the club to bring in new defenders rather than spend big on Monaco star Kylian Mbappe.

A report in The Telegraph has emerged claiming that the Merseyside outfit are ready to splash the cash for the in-demand Frenchman.

Arsenal are also thought to be interested in the 18-year-old, who scored 26 goals in all competitions for Monaco last season, but the publication states that Real Madrid are the favourites to land his signature.

It would be a huge shock if Liverpool edged ahead of their competitors to sign Mbappe, largely because they do not possess the same financial clout.

However, The Telegraph claims that the youngster’s priority is developing his game rather than taking on the pressure of a world-beater.

For many Liverpool fans, though, they would prefer the club to focus on strengthening the defence.

The club were forced to apologise and withdraw their interest from Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk after being accused of tapping up, but The Times journalist Jonathan Northcroft recently told The Anfield Wrap that the deal might not be dead.

Liverpool have already boosted their attacking options with the signing of Mohamed Salah from Roma, and the fans are unsure about the rumoured pursuit of Mbappe.

Revealed: 67% of Everton fans wouldn’t back improved Sigurdsson bid

According to reports from The Telegraph, Everton have seen a £40million bid rejected by Swansea City for midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The 50-cap Iceland international was in exceptional form for the Welsh outfit last season, bagging nine goals and 13 assists in the top flight to steer his side clear of relegation almost single-handed, and with Ross Barkley expected to leave Goodison Park this summer, he represents an exciting replacement.

However, the Swans have made it clear they won’t be bullied into letting Everton sign the 27-year-old on the cheap – in fact, the club’s owners have already made insinuations of tapping up.

But before reports of Everton’s failed bid surfaced, we asked Toffees supporters how much they thought the attacking midfielder was worth. And according to our poll, only 33% of Everton fans think he’s worth over £40million, with 19% valuing him between £40million and £50million and 14% rating him in excess of £50million.

That suggests the majority of Everton fans wouldn’t back their club placing even more money on the table. Is Ronald Koeman better off seeking a cheaper alternative? Let us know by commenting below.
