Seven Premier League Legends who have never won the Golden Boot

Despite being early in the Premier League season, the race for the Golden Boot is very much on.

With two players bagging eight goals, five players sinking seven, and three players on six, expect that battle to continue until the season’s end.

But not everyone can take home the famous accolade so who else is destined never to collect the trophy alongside these seven Premier League legends?

Wayne Rooney

Still only 32 years of age, Wayne Rooney has broken scoring records at club and international level.

England’s all-time goal scorer is now back at his boyhood club Everton, after pipping Sir Bobby Charlton to become Manchester United’s all-time leading goal scorer during his last season at the club.

With 202 Premier League goals to his name so far, it’s a surprise that the Liverpudlian has never got his hands on the Golden Boot. And that’s despite being the second highest goal scorer in Premier League history.

He has only surpassed 20 goals in a single season twice throughout his established career, with his best Premier League standing at 27 in 2011-12, where he lost out to his future team mate, Robin Van Persie.

Some of the best betting websites don’t feel Rooney will get anywhere near the top scorer charts this season, with some bookmakers offering as much as 151/1 for him to finish with the most goals this campaign.

Fernando Torres

It would be a shame for Fernando Torres to be remembered by Premier League fans for his time at Chelsea.

During his first season in the league as a Liverpool player, the Spaniard was arguably the signing of the 2007/08 season, scoring 24 goals in his first campaign. He only lost out to Cristiano Ronaldo in his quest for the Golden Boot.

His league record at Anfield was better than a goal every other game. He was arguably one of the best players for Liverpool during the Premier League era.

But he could be set for a January reunion with former boss Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United, with some bookies offering betting odds of 6/1 for the move to happen.

Frank Lampard

The only midfielder to make our list, Chelsea’s all-time leading goal scorer Frank Lampard stands proudly as the fourth highest goal scorer in Premier League history, ahead of former Golden Boot winners Thierry Henry, Michael Owen and Sergio Aguero.

Lampard’s goal-scoring record from midfield was nothing but remarkable, getting into double figures on 10 occasions. In all competitions, Lampard scored over 20 goals in a single season, five times.

In the 2009/10 season, Lampard scored 22 league goals, his Premier League best, finishing fifth in the trophy race behind his Chelsea team mate Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent and Carlos Tevez.

Robbie Fowler

A player who made his name at Liverpool, and was referred to as ‘God’ by many at the club, Robbie Fowler scored 163 Premier League goals across his career, making him the sixth highest scorer in the history of the Premier League.

Despite never winning the Golden Boot, Fowler did have some individual honours to his name, such as winning the PFA Young Player of the Year Award twice on the bounce, and at the time registered the Premier Leagues fastest-ever hat trick (4 min 33 secs).

Injury troubles meant that form was harder to come by during his spells at both Leeds United and Manchester City.

Fowler unfortunately missed out on the Golden Boot in 1995/96 where his 28 league goals weren’t enough to pip Alan Shearer to the trophy.

Diego Costa

One of the Premier League’s most temperamental forwards, former Chelsea player Diego Costa made a real name for himself during his three-year spell in South West London.

Costa was a pivotal figure in two of Chelsea’s title winning campaigns and left with an outstanding record of a goal every 1.7 games.

Twice in three seasons, Costa registered 20 league goals which were unable to land him the accolade.

Les Ferdinand

Despite being blighted by injuries during his career, former Newcastle, Tottenham, West Ham, Leicester City and Bolton striker Les Ferdinand is the Premier League’s ninth highest scorer of all time.

Ferdinand’s best goal-scoring season in the Premier League came in 1995/96 in his second and final season as a Newcastle United player.

Queens Park Rangers is where Ferdinand really made his name, scoring 60 league goals in 110 appearances in the first three Premier League seasons between 1992 and 1995.

Jermaine Defoe

A player who has never reached the heights of major honours, Jermaine Defoe will be remembered by many as a serial goal scorer almost everywhere he’s played.

Currently back with his boyhood club Bournemouth, goals have been harder to come by, registering a single Premier League goal so far in this campaign.

However, in his last two seasons with Sunderland, Defoe registered 15 league goals in both campaigns, despite his side’s struggles.

Defoe’s most prolific Premier League campaign was in 2009/10, when he scored 18 league goals for Tottenham.

Online bookmakers see Defoe’s chances of winning the Golden Boot this season as bleak to say the least, with PaddyPower offering odds of 501/1 for him to win the award.

With so many players in contention for this season’s Golden Boot, injuries or suspensions can have a major impact on who’ll be the eventual winner of this year’s award.

With bookmakers promoting free bet offers, there’s certainly money to be made from the Premier League top goal scorer market, with not one single player at odds on to win the award.

Aston Villa fans think Adomah deserves Championship award

Albert Adomah has received plenty of plaudits from Aston Villa fans for his recent goalscoring form.

The 29-year-old could also be rewarded by the Championship as he has been nominated for the Player of the Month award for November.

So far this season, the Ghana international has scored 11 goals in 18 appearances in all competitions.

In November, Adomah struck five times, all of which were netted across three consecutive games.

The forward has become pivotal in the Villans’ promotion challenge and has helped the club move to fifth in the league table.

As it stands, Steve Bruce’s side are seven points adrift of the top two and have a four-point cushion in the playoff zone.

It has been a positive few weeks for the Midlands outfit and it could get better if Adomah wins the monthly gong from the Sky Bet Championship.

However, he faces competition from Sheffield United’s Leon Clarke, Barry Douglas from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Derby County’s Matej Vydra.

Villa fans are, understandably, slightly biased in their opinions on who should triumph in the vote.

In Focus: Man United must move quickly if they want to snap Sessegnon up

According to reports in The Sun, Manchester United have received a huge boost in their pursuit of Fulham starlet Ryan Sessegnon with the Championship outfit stepping up their bid to sign a new left-back in the January transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun says that United – along with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur – are keeping tabs on the highly-rated 17-year-old, who is rated at £50m according to reports in The Sun in October, with Jose Mourinho potentially looking for a new left-back or left wing-back in the New Year with Luke Shaw’s future still yet to convince the Portuguese boss that he has a long-term future at Old Trafford.

Despite only turning 17 in May, the England U19 international continues to make waves for Fulham and has been tipped for a bright future having already made 53 senior appearances for the Cottagers.

How has Sessegnon done this season?

He has once again been excellent, considering his tender years.

The 17-year-old has scored four goals and provided a further two assists in 23 appearances in all competitions for the Championship side, and he scored a hat-trick on his 50th outing for the club as they beat Sheffield United 5-4 at Bramall Lane last month, with the treble including two fine finishes with his weaker right foot.

Sessegnon can play either as left-back or further up the pitch, and that is something that is likely to have impressed Mourinho.

Would he be a good signing for United?

While he certainly has the potential and ability to be the Red Devils’ first choice on the left-hand side in the future depending on what system Mourinho plans to use, it remains to be seen whether the Portuguese manager would be willing to make him a first-team regular straight away given his age and lack of top-level experience.

Will they get him?

It’s difficult to say.

While Sessegnon would obviously be attracted by the chance to join a club like United, he may need assurances over how often he would play as he would perhaps be more likely to get regular game time with Tottenham given Mauricio Pochettino’s tendency to give young players an opportunity.

His potential £50m price tag may also be seen as an issue.

One in one out: Benitez should sell Mitrovic and sign £22.5m-rated Uruguayan hotshot

Listen up Newcastle United fans, we’ve got some more news for you in the Transfer Tavern.

Newcastle need a top quality striker. Although the Magpies managed to finish tenth, up front they struggled. A striker is at the top of Benitez’s transfer list and one that would do the job is Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez.

It looks as though Aleksandar Mitrovic is on his way to Fulham in a reported £20 million move. The Serbian striker had a successful loan season with Fulham which resulted in the club returning to the Premier League. In his absence, the likes of Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez struggled to pick up the slack.

In truth, Newcastle have failed to replace Papiss Cisse. The Senegalese striker was a sensation for the Toon and the club could do with someone to finally step in and fire them higher up the table and Maxi Gomez could do just that.

The Uruguayan striker only joined Celta Vigo last summer but was an instant success in La Liga, finishing the season with 19 goals in 36 games.

Adept at making runs in behind but also being a penalty box striker, Gomez has a very well-rounded game. As with most South American strikers, he’s strong on the ball and is very good at bringing others into play – as seen with his lethal partnership with Iago Aspas.

Valued at £22.5 million by Transfermarkt, Gomez would be a great addition to Benitez’s squad. Surrounded with some attacking talent, Gomez could easily be a 20-goal scorer in the Premier League.

While he may command a fee close to £30 million, that large amount may be too much for Celta Vigo to turn down.

Liverpool fans list transfer expectations as the clock ticks down

Liverpool had a positive 2017-18 campaign as they secured a top-four spot in the Premier League and also reached the final of the Champions League.

The end of the season was tinged with disappointment, though, as the team were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in the showstopper in Kiev two months ago.

Despite this, it is clear that Jurgen Klopp is creating an exciting team, but in order to take that next step, the club need to recruit fresh talent.

The demand on first-team footballers is so high, which means that teams require strength in depth for rotation as well as tactical variations.

So far this summer, Liverpool have signed one new player in the form of midfielder Fabinho from Monaco, but they have also welcomed Naby Keita to the club one year after agreeing to sign the box-to-box star from RB Leipzig.

The Merseyside outfit have been linked to numerous players over the last few weeks, but no more deals have been struck as yet.

This summer, the transfer window closes on August 9 before the start of the domestic season, and some Liverpool fans on Reddit have been discussing what they expect between now and the close of the market.

Newcastle absolutely must beat Celtic to £18m-rated Giorgian De Arrasceta

Rafa Benitez has only managed to bring two players to his squad so far this summer.

Martin Dubravka and Ki Sung-yeung have been the only arrivals to the squad this summer as the Magpies have struggled to add any more numbers to the team. The club had been after Nice striker Alassane Plea but lost out to Borussia Monchengladbach. They had recently been linked with Andros Townsend but must sell Matt Ritchie to facilitate the move.

Benitez is keen to add a new number 10 to his squad and according to The Sun, he is keen on Uruguayan midfielder, Giorgian De Attasceta who is valued at £18 million by Cruzeiro.

The Breakdown

The Cruzeiro midfielder helped guide Uruguay to the quarter-finals and his performances have attracted interest from Newcastle and Celtic.

The 24-year-old currently plays for Brazilian side Cruzeiro, where he has played 90 games, scoring 20 goals and 16 assists according to Transfermarkt. Capable of also playing on the wings, De Attasceta is a number 10 who loves to get forward. Less of a 10 that likes to create and play the defence-splitting pass, the Uruguayan loves getting into the box.

Newcastle desperately need a number 10. In truth, they need multiple additions going forward. The addition of Kenedy was a good start but Benitez needs a striker and number 10 to bring it all together.

Ayoze Perez was played in the role last season but in truth, he needs to play as a striker. The Toon need a creative talent to fill the role and De Attasceta would be a start.

Thoughts Newcastle fans?

Tottenham Hotspur fans rubbish Kane’s claims about Premier League title challenge

Tottenham Hotspur have improved season-by-season but they are still not quite the finished product with regards to being a title-winning side.

Under Mauricio Pochettino over the last three years, the club have consistently finished inside the top four having earned third place twice and second in the Premier League standings.

Manchester City ran away with the crown last season, but Tottenham star striker Harry Kane is confident that his team are in with a shout of the trophy this time around.

While speaking to Sky Sports News, the 24-year-old insisted that the North London club will be in the title race.

However, plenty of Tottenham fans disagree with their talisman due to the lack of new signings being made this summer.

Pochettino is yet to recruit one new player to his squad, despite being linked to a handful of talented stars over the past few months.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”271323″ player=”12034″ title=”Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus on Football Manager”]

Chairman Daniel Levy is known for his shrewd negotiating and is never prepared to pay over the odds for a player.

It seems, though, that some supporters are growing frustrated and believe that a title challenge will be non-existent unless the transfer arrivals ramp up.

Fellow top-four finishers City, Manchester United and Liverpool have all strengthened in this market, which is concerning for some Tottenham fans.

Domagoj Vida could be the key ingredient for Arsenal next season

Arsenal have joined the race to sign in-demand World Cup finalist Domagoj Vida, according to Turkish publication Milliyet, as cited in Sport Witness.

What’s the story?

The 29-year-old centre-back only signed for Besiktas in January but has struggled to settle at the Turkish club.

The Croatian defender impressed with his World Cup performances, scoring his country’s second goal against Russia in the Quarter Finals and was a rock at the heart of the defence as his country reached the final of the tournament.

A number of Premier League clubs have expressed their interest in the hardman, including Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, West Ham and Everton, and now Arsenal have made an approach according to the latest report.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”271323″ player=”12034″ title=”Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus on Football Manager”]

Just what Arsenal need

Vida is a tough no-nonsense defender who can also provide a goal threat as he showed against Russia and he is exactly the sort of player that Arsenal were missing under Arsene Wenger.

He is a leader that controls the back line and could prove to be the missing ingredient for Unai Emery as he looks to return Arsenal to the top of the Premier League pile.

West Ham fans split on potential Mario deal

Joao Mario spent the second half of the 2017-18 campaign on loan at West Ham United – scoring twice in 13 Premier League appearances for the Hammers.

The London club passed up the chance to sign him on a permanent deal this summer, and Inter Milan are still looking to sell him.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, West Ham have made another loan move for the Portugal international, but that has also been rejected.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255853″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch West Ham’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

Wolverhampton Wanderers were also believed to be in the hunt, although it is thought that the Premier League new-boys are struggling to agree a deal with Inter.

The West Ham fans have been discussing whether they would be interested in the 25-year-old re-joining their club ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

And it would be fair to say that a number of supporters have differing opinions on the matter.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Revealed: Majority of Liverpool fans keen for club to strike a deal for Jonathan Tah

There would not be many disappointed Liverpool fans if the club opted against bringing in another signing this summer.

Jurgen Klopp can head into the new season with confidence having solved the biggest issue of them all – the goalkeeper.

After Loris Karius’s blunder-filled performance in the Reds’ Champions League defeat to Real Madrid in May, Liverpool got to work and managed to bring in Brazil’s number one Alisson from Roma.

The club may have smashed the record fee for a shot-stopper, but they need a world-class figure between the sticks in order to challenge for honours.

As well as Alisson, Liverpool brought in midfielders Fabinho and Naby Keita, as well as attacker Xherdan Shaqiri.

A deal for Nabil Fekir never got over the line, and according to last week’s report from the Liverpool Echo, the Merseyside outfit have no plans to buy a defender.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”273048″ player=”12034″ title=”Has Klopp just cranked up the pressure on himself”]

In fairness to the Reds, Virgil van Dijk has certainly steadied the ship at the back, but there are still question marks over Dejan Lovren.

There are a handful of centre-backs that Liverpool could have targeted, and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah could have been one of them.

The German has become a regular in the team since his arrival at the Bundesliga outfit in 2015.

Despite only being 22 years of age, Tah has managed to hold his own at the back, and if partnered up with Van Dijk, he would hone his skills even further.

We asked you if the Reds should scrap their plans and make a late move for Tah, and the answer was clear.
