Move for Charlie Adam a step backwards in Rangers’ drive to the Scottish summit

According to a recent report from The Daily Record, Charlie Adam would be open to a return to Rangers in January. The 32-year-old is currently playing his football at Championship outfit Stoke City and has done so since leaving Liverpool back in 2012, although a lack of regular football under Gary Rowett this term has called his future at the club into question.

And reports suggest that the Scotland international is interested in a return to Steven Gerrard’s Rangers in the New Year, a move Gers which would undoubtedly represent a step backwards in Rangers’ pursuit of the summit of Scottish football.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, it was clear from day one that the Liverpool legend had plenty of work to do to turn things around at Ibrox, what with things petering out greatly under Graeme Murty a few months earlier to underline just how far behind the Light Blues were.

And Gerrard set about doing that work with several shrewd additions over the summer, what with the likes of Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, and Kyle Lafferty signing permanent deals, while young stars Ovie Ejaria and Ryan Kent were one of five loan signings.

In fact, Gerrard made a staggering 15 additions during the summer to underline the hard work he completed to help Rangers get back towards the summit of Scottish football – and while there have been some bumps along the way, they do appear to be heading in the same direction.

Yet a move for 32-year-old Adam, who simply hasn’t played his best football for many a year now, would represent a step backwards in Rangers’ journey towards the top of the Scottish Premiership.

The midfielder began his senior career at Ibrox back in 2003 and went on to play 76 times for the Scottish giants before signing for Blackpool in 2009, where he arguably played his best football of his career to help the Tangerines reach the Premier League.

And while he earned a move to Liverpool as a result, that stint lasted just 12 months, and while there have been glimpses of brilliance during his time at Stoke, he simply isn’t the player he once was.

Yes, the Scottish star still has that ability to produce a moment of magic out of very little, not least from set plays, but in a side striving for consistency every week in a bid to compete with Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic, he simply isn’t the sort of signing they should be looking at – it’s not exactly a nod to the long term either.

Thus, while Adam himself appears keen on a return to Rangers, Gerrard should not share in his enthusiasm, as a move for the £1.8 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) would be a step backwards on their drive back to the summit of Scottish football.

Revealed: Majority of Middlesbrough fans welcome Tony Pulis signing Henri Lansbury

[ad_pod ]

Middlesbrough fans have been voting on whether they would like to see Tony Pulis bring Aston Villa outcast Henri Lansbury to Teesside.

The English central midfielder was frozen out under Steve Bruce and is yet to be recalled to the first team since Dean Smith took charge.

At 28, the six-foot Londoner is in need of a new home if he has any ambitions of reigniting a career that looked so promising at Nottingham Forest.

In 150 appearances at the City Ground, the Enfield-born playmaker scored 33 times and showed that the second-tier was his calling – earning the club’s captaincy, with a pass success rate higher than 74% each season and regularly snatching the ball back.

The all-round midfielder has since featured just 28 times for the Villa first team, but has still managed to match his statistical averages in claret and blue – last booting up in August for a League Cup fixture with Burton.

Although there was some resistance in the comments, 67% of Boro fans voted in a recent Football FanCast poll in favour of Lansbury joining Tony Pulis at the Riverside Stadium.

Southampton fans support VAR ruling out Davis goal despite going on to lose

[ad_pod ]

Southampton tasted defeat yet again in their season of misery, as Leicester City eliminated Mark Hughes’ side in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

The League Cup had produced two Saints wins this season, double the tally of their Premier League campaign despite the fact they have played 11 times more in the top flight.

Fans who travelled to the King Power Stadium saw their side lose on penalties after playing out a 0-0 draw.

Check out the video below to see how Brazil fans reacted to being asked how Cristiano Ronaldo would perform for them in a hilarious prank by Playmaker FC…

Strikers Michael Obafemi and Manolo Gabbiadini both had opportunities to open the scoring for Southampton, with the Irish forward missing a great chance before the Italian saw his late free-kick tipped onto the bar.

Steven Davis had put the ball in the back of the net, but his effort was ruled out when the referee turned to VAR and deemed Nathan Redmond to have used his arm to control the ball during the build-up.

VAR was again turned to later in the second half to determine if the Foxes deserved a penalty, with the decision this time going in favour of the Saints.

Having been on both sides of the tool, Saints fans had reason to be frustrated but these supporters backed the decision to rule out Davis’ effort.

Pickford’s howler shouldn’t overshadow a spirited Everton performance

It would’ve been a bitter pill to swallow for everyone involved with Everton Football Club who watched goalkeeper Jordan Pickford make a mess of that Virgil van Dijk shot which gave Liverpool a 96th-minute derby win.

But as much as disappointment and sadness cover the feeling after the match from an Evertonian perspective, the fans can be proud and optimistic about what they saw from Marco Silva’s charges at Anfield on Sunday.

Apart from Liverpool having the majority of possession and mainly dictating play, not many teams have gone to Anfield to create as good chances as Everton did. Everton weren’t outplayed, to say the least. Instead, they showed the progression they have made since the start of the season.

In the end, one can certainly say that Silva and his team deserved to have won a point from the match and the was Divock Origi freak goal nothing of a resemblance of how the match was going until that point.

Clear-cut chances in the first-half could easily have put Everton in the lead if Andre Gomes, Theo Walcott and Richarlison were more clinical in their efforts.

Klopp’s men had chances of their own but none that really troubled Pickford and that should be an encouraging sign for Silva, who has already done a terrific job in his short tenure of changing the way Everton play.

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Everton should take a lot of positives from the Liverpool clash to use to their advantage. They showed at Chelsea a few weeks ago that they are more than capable of dealing with the pressures of a playing against a big Premier League team.

And to have looked that lively and dangerous against a top team like Liverpool this season isn’t a fluke or a pinch of luck.

Under Silva, the Toffees will continue to grow, especially with the current group of players, and will they continue to be a difficult team to crack. The club may have had to wait a long time for him but it’s clear that Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright have a vision for the club, one strong enough not be undone by one freakish mistake.

Newcastle fans not interested in signing Fabio Borini

[ad_pod ]

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Newcastle United are interested in signing AC Milan forward Fabio Borini.

Borini, who turned out for Sunderland between 2015 and 2018, has scored just once in 11 appearances for Milan during the 2018-19 campaign.

And it is understood that the forward could be available in the January transfer window.

Newcastle are being linked with a swoop for the Italian, but it would be fair to say that the transfer rumour has not been well received by the English club’s fans.

Borini has represented Chelsea, Swansea City, Liverpool and Sunderland during his professional career, and could now return to England with Newcastle.

Borini actually scored seven Premier League goals during the 2013-14 campaign whilst on loan at Sunderland, but managed just seven in his next 50 appearances in the top flight.

Newcastle are currently light of options in the final third of the field, but the English club’s fans are not interested in taking Borini from Milan.

Newcastle fans on Twitter slate Mohamed Diame despite Huddersfield win

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle managed to grab all three points on their visit to the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Huddersfield, but fans of the Magpies on Twitter were clearly not happy with Mohamed Diame.

The away side snatched the victory from their relegation rivals thanks to a wonderfully worked goal that was finished off by Salomon Rondon in the 55th minute. They were then forced to hold on with some backs against the wall defending, but Huddersfield couldn’t find a way through.

Despite the win though, central midfielder Diame had a poor game. The 31-year-old struggled to keep hold of the ball in the middle of the park and committed a number of fouls when his touch let him down.

Fans of Rafa Benitez’s men won’t have been too disheartened at the final whistle, but many will be hoping that the Spanish boss doesn’t stick with Diame throughout the whole of the busy Christmas period.

Check out some of the reaction to his performance below.

HYS: Will Leeds be active in the January transfer window?

[ad_pod ]

January will provide Leeds United with the chance to restore a squad which has been hit with a number of injuries in the first half of the 2018-19 campaign.

However, head coach Marcelo Bielsa has claimed on a number of occasions that he will not be bringing any new players to the club in January.

Bielsa is a manager who prefers a smaller squad rather than one with plenty of options, which leads to a number of problems when everyone is fit.

It seems likely that Bielsa would be tempted into the market if a particular player became available, but there is also every reason to believe that the Argentine will stick with what he has entering the second half of the season.

With that in mind, we put the question to the Leeds fans. Do you believe that your club will be active in the January transfer window? Have your say below and keep an eye out for the published results…

Revealed: 76% of polled Nottingham Forest fans want to sign free agent Philipp Wollscheid

Nottingham Forest are enjoying a very good season under former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka, and, heading into Boxing Day, they sat just outside the play-off positions with promotion in their sights

They also possess one of the best defences in the league, with their record of 23 goals conceded in their first 23 games of the season making their backline the third best in the Championship at the time of writing.

32-year-old Daniel Fox has been a key feature of their success alongside Michael Hefele, but behind them, the likes of 35-year-old Michael Dawson is the only player available for backup alongside summer signing Tobias Figueiredo – they could do with a reinforcement or two in that area.

Rangers chasing double deal for Jones and Kamara, fans react

Loads of Rangers fans have been reacting to their latest transfer business, as the Gers are eying a double swoop for both Jordan Jones and Glen Kamara.

Rangers fans are ecstatic about the prospect of Jermain Defoe smashing in the goals alongside Alfredo Morelos, and it looks like they could soon have even more reason to be excited.

According to The Herald, Steven Gerrard wants to sign Kilmarnock’s Jones and Dundee midfielder Kamara at the end of the season.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Both players will be out of contract with their respective clubs in the summer, meaning the Gers are effectively looking to secure them both for free.

Their arrivals will no doubt have major effects on Gerrard’s current squad, and it surely means that no permanent move will be made for Lassana Coulibaly.

The Angers loanee was exceptional at the beginning of the season, but has slid down the pecking order and the moves for Kamara and Jones suggest the gaffer is finished with the Malian midfielder.

Davis open to retiring at Rangers

[ad_pod ]

Steven Davis says he could retire at Rangers.

The 34-year-old has joined the club on loan from Southampton, his second spell at Ibrox. And with his Saints’ contract set to expire in the summer, the midfielder says he may well end up remaining on a permanent basis.

What’s the word?

Davis has previously turned a loan move to Rangers into a permanent one, joining the club on a short-term deal from Fulham in 2008 and remaining until 2012, when he left to join Southampton.

His most recent return coincides with the signing of Jermain Defoe on a separate loan deal, a double deal that will surely boost the club’s hopes of wrestling the Scottish Premier League title away from Celtic.

And Davis says he is open to the prospect of seeing out his career at a club where he has won three SPL titles.

“Who knows? Football always throws up a few surprises,” he told Sky Sports News.

“But hopefully beyond the six months everything will go well and then we can look at things and make it a longer-term thing.”

And he also claims that manager Steven Gerrard did not have to do much to convince him to head north.

“Nobody had to sell the club to me. I know what the club is all about,” he added.

“Obviously the opportunity to work with the manager as well was a big draw, but it was an easy decision for me once I found out there was a bit of interest from the club.

“This is the move I wanted to happen and I just want get back to playing football and enjoying football.”

Experienced campaigner an offer Gerrard can’t refuse

Davis is perfect for Rangers, and Rangers are perfect for Davis.

The veteran midfielder has no need to prove his worth in the SPL, he can merely point to the winners’ medals that adorn his mantelpiece.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

It is unlikely that Southampton would stand in his way were he to choose to run down his contract and sign for the club where he was previously a hero.

Ralph Hussenhuttl’s side have a young, mobile midfield, and Davis is unlikely to fit into that mould if he does return to St Mary’s.

Instead, Gerrard would do well to tie him down, and ensure he has no reason to leave Ibrox again.
