Phil McNulty names 4 Everton players he thinks futures could be in doubt

BBC Sport Phil McNulty tweeted post-match on Sunday that he believes the futures of four Everton players could be in doubt following the 1-0 defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.

What did he say?

Well, the Toffees looked to be in a strong position to see off their arch-rivals and reach the fourth round of the FA Cup at Anfield when the two team-sheets announced at 3:01pm, with Carlo Ancelotti going full strength and Jurgen Klopp making wholesale changes and starting a number of youngsters.

And while the visitors dominated in the first half, it was a different story in the second half when teenager Curtis Jones’ brilliant goal proved to be the difference between the two sides.

A number of Everton players put in poor displays – especially in the second half – and McNulty wasn’t impressed with four individuals in particular.

He tweeted: “Think a few Everton players may just have moved towards the end of their careers at the club there. Sigurdsson and Walcott prime culprits but Morgan Schneiderlin in that mix too. And where was Richarlison?”

How much do you remember about football in 2019? Our quiz will test your knowledge…

Is he right?

He certainly could be when it comes to Sigurdsson, Walcott and Schneiderlin, who have been poor for a while now.

Sigurdsson has two goals and one assist in 23 appearances in all competitions this term having cost £45m in 2017, and simply doesn’t look suited to a central midfield role in Ancelotti’s preferred 4-4-2 formation.

Meanwhile, Walcott has nine goals and seven assists in 72 outings since moving from Arsenal, while Schneiderlin has come under criticism on more than one occasion this term for his performances.

It is probably a little harsh on Richarlison though even if he wasn’t at his best at Anfield.

The Brazilian has nine goals and four assists in 2019/20 and has shown his versatility and work-rate when playing out wide and as a striker this season.

Leeds fans shouldn’t be worried about potentially facing Jack Clarke

If Leeds United were fictional their story would be panned for being too unrealistic.

In the latest twist in the tale, it seems as if one of Leeds’ old players could be back to haunt them this weekend as The Athletic’s Phil Hay has stated that Jack Clarke will be on his way to QPR just in time to face Leeds United.

Understandably, this sent a number of Leeds supporters into a frenzy as they believed it was pretty much inevitable that Clarke plays on Saturday and costs United points.

It would be typical that the teenager puts in the performance of a lifetime against United on Saturday, but how likely is that in reality?

The winger has played just one senior game this season, and even that was just for 19 minutes.

He’s unlikely to be as sharp as he’d like to be, and even if he is he’s playing against players who know all of his tricks.

Clarke has trained with the defenders at United for the past year and a half, and they’ll know every skill and every attribute he’s got in his locker and that should help them deal with the danger he poses.

Leeds supporters’ worries about Clarke putting in a shift against them are rather illogical. To put it simply, the winger isn’t set up to have a good game on Saturday if he joins QPR in time to appear against his former side.

In other news, Andrea Radrizzani could be about to risk Leeds’ future with one financial gamble.

Liverpool would be willing to sell Xherdan Shaqiri for £25.5m in the summer

According to James Pearce, Liverpool will look for €30m (£25.5m) if they are to sell Xherdan Shaqiri in the summer.

What’s the story?

The Switzerland international has been the subject of loan offers from both AS Roma and Sevilla, but it seems that Jurgen Klopp wants to keep him at Anfield for now – both approaches have been rejected.

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

However, Pearce has also revealed the Reds would look to move him on for €30m (£25.5m) if there is interest in the summer.

Would be fantastic business

The 28-year-old moved to Merseyside in 2018 from Stoke City for £13m, and he proved his worth last campaign. In 30 appearances for the club, he scored six goals and provided five assists, whilst he also started in the famous 4-0 win against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final second leg.

However, this time out, he has started just one Premier League game – albeit a match in which he did score, against Everton – and he has spent a considerable amount of time on the sidelines due to injury. Even when he has been fit and able to play, Jurgen Klopp has appeared reluctant to play him.

His time appears to be coming to an end with the European champions and, although he has left his mark and contributed to their success, he is not a player that cannot be replaced.

At the end of the day, he has taken up a bit-part role, and has never even been close to being a regular starter.

As such, if Michael Edwards was able to negotiate a deal which would see him bring in almost double the price the club parted with to secure Shaqiri’s signature, it would be a miraculous bit of business.

Moving on a player who rarely plays for almost a 100% profit is genius, and it would be another boost to the club – it is the kind of business that the biggest and best-run teams on the planet do.

Meanwhile, this Liverpool man fails to hit the same heights he usually does, against Manchester United.

Tottenham fans react to Danny Rose nearing a loan exit from the club

There have been several rumours during January that have linked Tottenham players with a move away from the club, and after Christian Eriksen landed in Milan yesterday it seems Danny Rose could follow him out of the club.

Newcastle, Watford and Bournemouth are all interested in the England international, according to Dan Kilpatrick, who now looks poised to leave the club on loan until the end of the season.

Any possible exit means his appearance against Liverpool could be his final showing in a Spurs shirt, as his contract expires in the summer with no plans yet in place to renew his deal.

Rose has been a long-term servant for the North London outfit since graduating from their academy, and some fans are concerned that his departure will weaken Spurs at left-back, even though they have Ryan Sessegnon and Ben Davies to call upon to play there.

The rise of Japhet Tanganga is another positive which means Rose may not be missed as much as the supporters above feel, as there is no doubt the England international has tailed off in his performance levels in recent months.

He has an average WhoScored rating of 6.5 while his 1.5 tackles and 0.7 interceptions per league game are his lowest return in a number of years.

That could be why some supporters are so pleased by news of his impending exit, with the recent reported clash with Jose Mourinho perhaps the final straw in his time with the club.

Where is he from?! Can you name which obscure countiries these famous players have represented?

In other news, fans have also be reacting to the exciting news that the club is working hard to bring in a world-class target who fans love already.

Crystal Palace encountering "complications" as they try to sign Nathan Ferguson

In The Athletic’s deadline day Q&A, their Crystal Palace correspondent Dominic Fifield has hinted at “complications” in the club’s bid to get a deal for Nathan Ferguson over the line.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun reported on Wednesday that the West Bromwich Albion full-back was undergoing a medical with the south London outfit after a deal that could rise to £10m had been agreed, but as of Friday morning there has been no official announcement from the club.

Fifield was asked by an Eagles supporter as to why the deal for the 19-year-old was yet to come to fruition, and he replied:

“Suspect it will all become clear on Ferguson this morning. Clearly complications prevented it going through yesterday. Watch this space.”

Need to get it done

Crystal Palace have already lost out to Southampton for the loan addition of Kyle Walker-Peters this week, and they need to get this move over the line in the full-back positions where they have little depth.

The Baggies youngster has primarily played at left-back for the Championship high-flyers this season but has also filled in at right-back on nine occasions too, in the matches where Transfermarkt have recorded his position.

Calling all transfer experts! How much did each of these Deadline Day signings cost?

That means that not only could he provide competition for Patrick van Aanholt on the left, he could also do the same for Joel Ward on the opposite flank, and perhaps even start ahead of one of the pair if his form is good enough.

It’s important for Roy Hodgson that the deal for the versatile 19-year-old is done today, otherwise the Eagles could be left desperately searching for an alternative before the 11pm deadline.

In other Crystal Palace news, Fifield has issued an update on the chances of Michy Batshuayi returning to Selhurst Park befor the deadline…

Sheffield Wednesday fans slam Joey Pelupessy for display in Millwall stalemate

Sheffield Wednesday’s poor league form continued on Saturday afternoon as the Owls fought out a 0-0 stalemate at Hillsborough.

Garry Monk’s side have now won just one of their last seven matches with their draw against Millwall being the fourth point picked up from a possible 21.

Neither team overly tested the opposition goalkeeper as there was only a total of four shots on target throughout the entire tie, but with the 40-year-old bolstering his squad with a pair of Deadline Day additions, positive times could be ahead.

However, that may not be the case for Owls central midfielder Joey Pelupessy, who has been hammered on social media for his performance, putting doubt on his future in south Yorkshire as his contract expires this summer.

Here’s what the fans have been saying…

The general consensus on the 26-year-old was negative with an array of strong phrases being used to describe his performance, including “waste of a shirt,” “league one player,” and “out of his depth.”

Pelupessy has started back-to-back league matches now, leading to one fan also criticising Monk for making such a decision by suggesting that he has lost the plot.

The Dutchman has been in the squad above the long-serving Sam Hutchinson, which has caused many question marks over who is the better option in midfield.

A couple were on Pelupessy’s side as one member of the Hillsborough faithful questioned when Hutchinson last had a decent game while another brandished him as “injury prone.”

However, a further supporter said Pelupessy was nowhere near the 30-year-old’s ability and that he was way out of his depth.

Others added weight to this argument by looking at other members of the squad – one would rather Alex Hunt play instead, while a list of players were named who also have had far too many chances to prove their worth.

And finally, some fans referenced ex-manager Jos Luhukay’s previous decisions to drop Hutchinson for Pelupessy when he was in charge, suggesting that there was a recurring theme that has been unearthed by Monk.

The Owls have a chance to shake things up against Barnsley next weekend as both striker Connor Wickham and attacking midfielder Josh Windass will be available for selection having joined on the last day of the transfer window.

Newcastle United: Allan Saint-Maximin’s tweet has supporters praising winger ahead of Oxford clash

Ahead of Newcastle United’s looming FA Cup replay away to Oxford United, Magpies supporters have taken to Twitter and praised winger Allan Saint-Maximin’s heartfelt social media post with his daughter – prompting supporters to be grateful that the Frenchman is back from injury and enjoying life.

Saint-Maximin, who couldn’t help his side break through a stern Norwich City defence in their last Premier League outing, has recently returned to the fold after a hamstring injury ruled him out for the entirety of the festive period. The Frenchman, who has been a crucial figure judging by his stats, has completed more dribbles (4.4) per game than any other Magpies player this season (WhoScored.com) – potentially highlighting his creative influence under manager Steve Bruce.

As a result, a lot of Newcastle fans are keen to see him back to his best, with their next Premier League clash away to Arsenal being just under a fortnight away – giving Saint-Maximin some time to find his feet when it comes to fitness and recovery.

Here’s how supporters lauded the 22-year-old’s message on Twitter.

Former Villa defender Ritchie de Laet criticises Steve Bruce

Former Aston Villa defender Ritchie de Laet has had some pretty scathing words for his, and the club’s, previous manager Steve Bruce.

The Belgian was quoted by The Athletic as saying: “Steve Bruce wasn’t my cup of tea. The football was similar to Tony Pulis but at least Tony had a plan. I remember Steve would throw the ball into the middle in training and say, ‘Let’s play’, like we were under-nines. It was crazy.”

Such a damning indictment of the current Newcastle United manager has certainly drawn interest from Villa fans.

There were fans who found the “shots fired” by de Laet, who now plays for Royal Antwerp, highly amusing, with one fan stating “Bruceball has seen off many a decent player”.

The defender joined Villa in 2016 and went on to have two loan spells before eventually leaving for a permanent move to Belgium in the summer of 2019.

Did he really play for us?! No Villa fan has managed to name all of these obscure Villans….

He only played 14 matches for the club in all that time, indicating that the managers didn’t think too much of him.

While there were various fans who found the harsh words funny, there were others who found it difficult to join in considering the current Premier League table.

That stance comes with Bruce’s Newcastle side currently sitting five places and six points above Dean Smith’s outfit, who are currently hovering just above the relegation zone.

This has got one supporter wondering “what on earth are any villa fans laughing or agreeing with”, perhaps feeling that more focus should be on what is happening at the moment.

Meanwhile, a player who played with de Laet has been struggling of late.

Leeds U23 players celebrate McCarron’s Scotland debut

The 18-year-old posted on Instagram after making his debut for Scotland’s U19s.

He said it was a dream come true, and he wasn’t the only one happy with this milestone.

Of course, a number of his U23s teammates took to social media to congratulate him for this achievement.

It has to be said that McCarron deserves plaudits for receiving international recognition, and hopefully this is the first of many appearances for the teenager.

In other news, Leeds looked at this manager before appointing Marcelo Bielsa.

Aston Villa fans react to Tyrone Mings’ post-Southampton comments

Aston Villa suffered their third straight Premier League loss on Saturday afternoon as they went down 2-0 at Southampton.

After the match, central defender Tyrone Mings admitted that his side ‘lacked fight’ against the Saints but would “figure it out behind closed doors”.

>Red Herring or Real Hero: Only hardcore Villa fans will get all of them right….

It was a rallying cry from the England international.

His words, though have not gone down terrifically with the Villa supporters, with many insisting that they want to see actions rather than comments.

Not all of the fans hated Mings’ comments, though, as one individual was pleased to hear something from one of their players during what has been a tough run.

Another supporter, though, called for the club’s players to refund those who travelled to St Mary’s for Saturday’s Premier League affair.

Next up for Dean Smith’s side is the small matter of the EFL Cup final against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

Villa’s next two in the Premier League are also extremely tough, meanwhile, as they will travel to Leicester City on March 9 before hosting Chelsea one week later.

In other news, a number of the club’s fans have been reacting to recent comments from Jack Grealish.
