West Ham & GSB clearly aren’t learning their lessons

According to The Sun, West Ham are leading London rivals Tottenham and also Brighton in the race to land Amiens striker Serhou Guirassy.

Who is he?

Well, the Frenchman recently put Paris Saint-Germain to the sword with two goals for Amiens in their thrilling 4-4 draw against the reigning French champions.

In total, he has netted eight goals in Ligue 1 this season in 22 outings, having notched only two league goals for FC Koln last season.

The report states that the Hammers have tracked Guirassy for months and can seal a £20m deal soon, with Amiens prepared to cash in and begin planning for the future as they prepare for relegation – they are currently second from bottom in Ligue 1.

Gold, Sullivan & Brady clearly aren’t learning

How many strikers have West Ham signed who amount to very little in east London?

The Hammers’ club-record signing, £45m Sebastien Haller, has only netted six goals this season, and his struggles come after other attacking arrivals such as Andre Ayew, Javier Hernandez, Andy Carroll, Jordan Hugill and Albian Ajeti, to name a few, also floundered at the club – Carroll and Hernandez hit a combined 51 goals in 205 games, while Hugill and Ajeti are yet to score.

It begs the question: why are the Irons’ owners simply ploughing through so many strikers in the hope that one of them sets the London Stadium alight, without actually building a team around any of them to play to their strengths?

In fact, Planet Football ranked the 45 forwards signed by West Ham during the Gold and Sullivan era, and very few of them have actually been successful.

From non-League to the Premier League: Where did these top-flight stars begin their careers?

So, the interest in Guirassy simply goes to show that GSB aren’t learning their lessons of throwing money at strikers in slim hope that they’ll take it upon themselves to fire the goals in – it is time they consider who they’re signing and make sure they’re the right man for the job.

Sheffield Wednesday fans discuss Barry Bannan

Sheffield Wednesday were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City on Wednesday but they made a respectable show of themselves as the contest only ended 1-0 in favour of the English champions. It may be another loss for Garry Monk and his players to endure but the Owls should take heart from the character they displayed, as they always stayed in the contest despite achieving just 20% possession. There was a big highlight for one man in particular, too, with Barry Bannan producing an excellent piece of skill to pass the ball between two oncoming opponents and into the feet of Kieran Lee.

Fans have naturally been excited by the skill and praised Bannan as a result, as it is not often that Wednesday supporters get to see one of their own players embarrass some of the best footballers in the country.

Bannan’s influence on the game didn’t end there, however, and he put his midfield partners Lee and Joey Pelupessy to shame with 56 touches compared to their respective 21 and 13, per WhoScored.

One key pass also meant that he stood out to City manager Pep Guardiola, who called the 30-year-old an “incredible player” after the match, a comment which also drew reaction from fans.

Whether or not they agree with the Spaniard’s comments is a different matter, but if Bannan is to prove that Guardiola is accurate then he needs to improve his consistency and display his importance to the side in the remaining league matches.

The comments should boost him however, and hopefully for the Owls’ sake he takes confidence into the next match against Brentford.

Alberto sell-on clause is a touch of genius from Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp certainly doesn’t have the financial backing at Liverpool to match that of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, but it would be wrong to insinuate that he has not splashed the cash to put together the squad he wants.

Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, for example, were record signings in their positions at their time of signing, whilst Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Fabinho cost over £30m. Naby Keita was another expensive purchase, setting the Reds back over £40m initially.

However, their many new recruits have been counteracted with significant departures. Philippe Coutinho’s sale to Barcelona is the one that first comes to mind, with the Blaugrana spending £106m to secure his signature, but others such as Christian Benteke and Mamadou Sakho brought in well over £20m each.

They were also able to ship off the likes of Dominic Solanke and Jordan Ibe for £19m and £15m respectively despite them making little impact at Anfield – they made just 56 starts between them at the club.

That leaves them with a net spend of £107.77m over the last five years, which is better than 13 other clubs in the Premier League. Michael Edwards has done a fantastic job, and deserved plenty of praise.

A recent report indicates he may have secured another fantastic deal for the Reds, as well. It has been indicated that Lazio value Luis Alberto at €80m (£70m). The 27-year-old has garnered a lot of interest from around Europe this season – he is a player who Liverpool possess a 30% sell-on clause for.

The now-Spain international left the Reds in 2016 having failed to make the grade – he made just 12 appearances all in all. The fee itself was £4.3m – nothing to shout home about.

Since making the switch, he has managed 24 goals and and a huge 40 assists in 124 matches for the Serie A outfit, which puts him amongst the best on the continent. He has played an important part in Lazio’s rise to the top of the table, and it is no surprise to see him pursued.

The Rome-based club are trying to get him to sign a new contract, but even then, he will have a release clause of €100m (£87.2m, Il Massagero via Sport Witness).

Should a potential suitor fork out for Alberto this summer, Liverpool could stand to receive a significant windfall.

Liverpool’s foresight in this case is something to behold – now, they should cross their fingers that he seeks pastures new.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans are baffled by this transfer target’s latest claim.

Mason Greenwood moves into world’s top 50 most valuable CFs

Mason Greenwood burst onto the scene at Man United in 2019 shortly after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer handed him his Premier League debut towards the end of the 2018/19 season.

An impressive first start against Cardiff City on the final day of the same season hinted that a more prominent first team role beckoned and that has since proven to be the case, with Greenwood making 22 league appearances so far in the 2019/20 season.

The progress he has made hasn’t gone unnoticed either.

Popular football website Transfermarkt recently updated their player valuations and Greenwood was one of the big market movers as he moved into the top 50 most valuable strikers in world football.

In September 2019 his value stood at just £7.2m, but more than six months later he now boasts a value of £28.8m, which puts him level with Gonzalo Higuain and just shy of Barcelona’s Luis Suarez.

That in itself speaks volumes about his meteoric rise in the past twelve months, and there have been a handful of landmark moments along the way.

Here, Football FanCast look at three of those…

First Premier League goal

The first Premier League goal is one of the biggest reference points in any budding striker’s career.

It was a case of lucky 13 for Greenwood as he scored on his 13th appearance for the Red Devils in a 3-3 draw against Sheffield United.

The teenager arrived to meet a delicious cross from Marcus Rashford and stabbed home to draw the visitors level.

Four more goals have since been added to his tally with strikes against Everton, Newcastle, Norwich and Watford – the latter a delightful finish which tickled the underside of the bar on its way in.

New Man United contract

Greenwood was rewarded for his excellent progress with a new deal in October 2019, penning terms until 2023 with the option to extend for a further year.

That he has since made four further Premier League starts proves his contract reflected his increasing importance and seniority.

Given the nature of the sport and his level of promise, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Greenwood was in talks over a new deal within the next twelve months.

First England U21 goal

Talk of a surprise inclusion in the England squad for Euro 2020 has become part of the media narrative in recent weeks amid the injuries to Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford, but it would be a huge step for him to take given he’s made just four appearances for the U21s.

And it took the United starlet until his fourth appearance to score his first goal during a 2-1 defeat against the Netherlands.

It’s a landmark of note but bigger things beckon for Greenwood at both club and international level.

Liverpool can’t afford to see Coutinho join Man Utd

How Liverpool fans feel about Philippe Coutinho is certainly one that will be a cause for debate, but there is no doubting that he enjoyed his best period in football on Merseyside.

He scored 54 times and provided a further 45 assists in just 201 games, and was regularly praised by current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp for his abilities. Speaking after the Brazilian penned a new five-year contract with the club back in 2017, the Reds manager said: “I think everyone knows what a great footballer Phil is, that is not in question. Since arriving here I have not only witnessed his ability up close, but also his ever continuing development. He is truly world-class – in that very top bracket.

But since that glorious time at Anfield, Coutinho’s career has stuttered big time. The Brazil international has endured a difficult period since joining Barcelona from Liverpool, playing just 76 times for the club before being shipped out on loan to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich last summer.

And now, according to Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United have asked about signing him.

Coutinho has previously been linked with a shock return to Anfield, but Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo claim that Liverpool’s Premier League rivals, Chelsea and United, have already asked about securing his signature.

The report further claims that the Red Devils in particular are interested as they would like a “creative player in a very gray core”.

With Liverpool’s bitter rivals United now seemingly in the race to sign him and bring him back to the Premier League, Michael Edwards and co simply have to act. There is a question of where the pint-sized maestro would fit into this Liverpool team, but Klopp’s managerial skills will surely prevail when it comes to that regard.

Coutinho’s ability as Klopp himself has lauded, means he would still represent a top-level signing for United. Just imagine how it would feel to those within the inner circles at Anfield and even Reds supporters themselves if the Brazilian was the player who really took the Red Devils to the next step. They just cannot afford to let the £63m-rated star join up at Old Trafford, and it’s why they should seriously consider bringing him back home.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have shown interest in signing this Premier League star.

Chouiar would hand Palace a new dimension

According to French outlet Le Foot, Crystal Palace are following Dijon forward Mounir Chouiar, who is also attracting interest from Bournemouth and Watford.

What kind of player is he?

Well, the 21-year-old only arrived at Dijon last summer, signing from Ligue 2 outfit RC Lens.

The Frenchman has made an immediate impact, scoring eight goals in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side, including a strike against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Dijon boss Stéphane Jobard described Chouiar as a “serious talent in one-on-one situations” and the stats don’t lie.

The youngster records an eye-catching 3.5 dribbles per game in Ligue 1 this season, as well as 2.2 key passes per game and two shots per game – he is an all-action attacker.

Would hand Roy Hodgson a new dimension

If Crystal Palace manage to bring Chouiar to Selhurst Park, it would hand Roy Hodgson a new dimension.

Aside from his impressive attacking statistics, the Liévin-born forward can also play in a number of positions.

He can operate as a left-winger, where he has made a total of 11 appearances this term, although he can also play in the centre where he has made seven outings this season.

Chouiar would hand the ex-England manager a new dimension in the respect that his versatility and dribbling ability would blend well with Wilfried Zaha, who can also operate on either wing or in the middle, and registers a huge 4.7 dribbles per game.

The pair of them playing in red and blue would surely cause chaos for the opposition, given their ability to move around the field into different positions and drag players out of shape with their dribbling qualities in one-on-one situations.

Call yourself a Premier League expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

With Jordan Ayew also a fine dribbler too – the Ghana international records two dribbles per game – Hodgson would be blessed with attacking fluidity if he managed to bring Chouiar – who is rated at £7.2m on Transfermarkt – to south London.

Aston Villa fans react to Mile Jedinak’s appointment

Mile Jedinak finished a decent footballing career with Aston Villa but his journey in the game has not been concluded just yet.

The Australia international appeared for the national side on 79 occasions, scoring 20 goals from defensive midfield in the process.

The bearded enforcer moved to Crystal Palace in 2011 and stayed at Selhurst Park for five years before he moved to Villa Park in 2016 for an undisclosed fee, per BBC Sport.

Did he really play for us?! No Villa fan has managed to name all of these obscure Villans….

Jedinak made 80 appearances for Villa during his twilight years in the Midlands in what proved to be the beginning of a lengthy chapter in his career.

Per Birmingham Mail, the 35-year-old’s decision to retire from the game last summer did not mark the end of his time with the club.

Indeed, the Sydney-born man has now undertaken a coaching role with the club and stepped up to the role of an academy coach in light of the departure of Richard Beale, who was the U18s academy manager.

And plenty of Villa fans have expressed their delight about the news…

These fans, meanwhile, were divided on Jedinak’s footballing ability.

One fan suggested that he possessed no talent and alluded to the dangers of allowing him to influence and coach the next generation.

On the flip side, however, was a fan suggesting he didn’t get the credit he deserved during his time at Villa Park.

Crystal Palace: Fans react as Alexander Sorloth comments on links to Real Madrid

Many Crystal Palace fans are reacting to loaned out striker Alexander Sorloth’s comments about being linked to Spanish giants Real Madrid, he said to Norwegian TV via Liga Blatt.

The forward joined the Eagles on deadline day in January 2018 and has yet to score in English football, with Roy Hodgson loaning him out to Genk last season and then letting him go on a 2-year loan to Turkish League side Trabzonspor this campaign.

This is where he has enjoyed his best football, as he has scored 19 goals in 26 appearances, and his performances have reportedly caught the eye of many clubs, including Real Madrid, via The Evening Standard.

When asked about the transfer rumours, he said, “I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to play there. That’s the dream of every player.”

The links may have left Palace fans confused, but his offensive statistics in the Super Lig this season highlight that he is playing with a confidence that was not seen before, as he averages three shots per game, 1.2 key passes a game and 1.8 successful dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

For now, the player has a season and a half left on his loan deal, but if he continues scoring, it might be hard for the Eagles to keep hold of the Norweigan when he returns.

Here is what fans had to say following his comments:

Saudi source claims Newcastle takeover could be announced next week

Newcastle United’s takeover could be confirmed by next week, according to sources in Saudi Arabia.

The House of Saud claim that there have been delays to the original plans of announcing the completion on Monday of this week and also state that “terms including figures are agreed and the deposit has been completed.”

In an article posted today, they further added:

“Speculation regarding a potential one-off embargo against the PIF and Saudi Arabia being imposed by the Premier League is untrue, and we can report that the Saudi Finance Minister has received no indication of any such issues or obstacles with regard to the takeover of Newcastle United.

“The new owners have a “dream list” of players, including some of Europe’s biggest names, which they see as crucial to bringing the club’s results and achievements to the highest level. The Newcastle United board are confident they will be able to announce the deal formally within, at most, the next week.”

If true, Mike Ashley’s 13-year tenure at the Magpies is soon about to come to an end with Amanda Staveley’s consortium taking the reins.

Many fans at St James’ Park have been waiting eagerly all week to hear some sort of confirmation that the takeover has been completed and this latest update emerging from Saudi Arabia, who are heavily backing the deal through their Public Investment Fund, provides major encouragement.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The House of Saud believe the delay has been down to “due diligence” from the Premier League, which has been exacerbated by the current lockdown measures in both countries.
