Match Report: Vertonghen embodies Tottenham’s epic performance in Champions League thriller

[ad_pod ]

All eyes were on Jadon Sancho as he set foot on the hallowed Wembley Turf on Wednesday evening but it was his opposite number who stole the headlines with a colossal performance on the left-side of a back five.

Mauricio Pochettino’s tactical nous has been called into question in Champions League campaigns down the years. The defeat against Juventus last season underlined a naivety in his approach which ultimately cost his side a place in the quarter-final, but the Argentine was determined to learn his lesson against Borussia Dortmund.

The first-half was typical of a quintessential Champions League knockout stage tie: cagey, tightly-contested, lacking cutting edge – the type of game which is poised on a knife edge and compelling even in the absence of decisive ingenuity. The second-half belonged to the relentless hosts.

It would be a tad hyperbolic to label the game as one of two halves as the opening period was closely matched, but there are clear lines of distinction to be drawn between the first and second period which, in a landmark moment for Europe’s dark horse, pointed towards genuine progression at the top level.

Spurs have often been depicted as the young pretender with no mettle, but demons of a disheartening past were exorcised as experience combined with a sprinkle of youthful exuberance provided a balance which enabled Pochettino’s men to tower above the overwhelmed visitors.

The vociferous yellow wall was gradually drowned out by a buoyant Wembley crowd who grew with confidence as every dominant second half minute passed. At the heart of it all was Jan Vertonghen.

Pitted against England’s golden boy and jet-setting extraordinaire, the Belgium international found himself in unfamiliar territory versus the most talented teenager in Europe.

A highlight reel devoted to Sancho’s stratospheric dribbling ability broadcasted by Sky Sports during the interval summed up the opening 45 minutes: he was the man everyone was talking about and Dortmund’s success rested on his shoulders.

If anything was likely to happen it was going to come through Sancho, but it must be said that Vertonghen did a decent job of marshalling him on the flank; it was the 18-year-old’s darts infield which served to disrupt an otherwise robust defensive unit. At the other end of the field, the makeshift left-back struggled to get to grips with his attacking responsibilities.

His frustration reverberated from his clapping hands when he was dumped on the floor by Dortmund’s Achraf Hakimi a few yards away from the corner flag, leaving him perplexed and mocking the referee following what was unquestionably a blatant foul.

But the second-half hosted the birth of a new left-back, a supercharged Vertonghen 2.0.

The 31-year-old veteran who marched down the tunnel at half-time remained in the dressing room; a revamped, modern day and marauding full-back took his place on the field of play for the second 45 minutes, and within seconds he whipped a world class cross onto the right boot of an airborne Son Heung-min, who caressed the delicious cross into the top corner of the goal, the ball brushing the netting with emphatic delicacy as around  70,000 Spurs fans were sent into delirium.

Little did they know his masterclass was just getting started. A bulldozing run through the heart of Dortmund’s defence ended with a speculative right-footed effort flying harmlessly into the crowd, but his intentions were clear.

And, with just seven minutes of regulatory time remaining, he ghosted in at the back post to double the advantage with an air of conviction which hinted he’d been playing in the wrong position for his entire career.

A 2-0 win at home in the first-leg is widely regarded as the perfect Champions League result.  Pochettino, though, didn’t allow that acute awareness to cloud his judgement and continued to stand by the system which had stifled Dortmund for most of the game, bringing on Fernando Llorente for Lucas Moura in a straight substitution. Just two minutes later he headed Spurs into a fantasy land where all types of myths and legends reside by adding a third goal to complete demolition Dortmund.

Game, set and match – for now at least. The second-half performance was epitomised by maturity, dead-eyed finishing and a willingness to scrap for every last 50:50 or 80:20. Vertonghen was the embodiment of those qualities.

The promise showcased by Sancho in the first-half was symbolic of the Tottenham of years gone by, threatening to do something unprecedented in fleeting moments of enchantment before fading into predictable insignificance.

The majestic second-half masterclass from Vertonghen, however, proved that winds of change have been blowing in north London. Both Pochettino and his excellent squad of players have come of age.

West Ham fans on Declan Rice

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United came back from an early deficit to secure a 3-1 win over strugglers Fulham at the London Stadium on Friday. Goals from Javier Hernandez, Issa Diop and Michail Antonio were enough to secure all three points for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

The Hammers were certainly the better side and deserving of their victory. There were strong performances all across the pitch for the Irons, with Diop, Antonio and Declan Rice particularly impressing.

Rice has been a revelation for the east London club this season. The 20-year-old defensive midfielder has been a regular starter under Pellegrini and seems to be improving with each passing week.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

Rice recently declared his international allegiance to England. Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate should certainly be paying plenty of attention to the West Ham man’s form. In the meantime, Pellegrini will be hoping that the midfielder can continue to play such a vital role for his team.

After the match, plenty of Hammers fans took to Twitter to congratulate Rice on another fine performance…

The Chalkboard: Klopp’s Old Trafford blunder may cost Liverpool the title

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans weren’t happy with James Milner after Sunday’s draw at Old Trafford, and some stunning stats reveal just how wrong Jurgen Klopp was to leave Trent Alexander-Arnold out of the starting XI.

Klopp will feel like he missed an opportunity when he reviews the 0-0 draw against Manchester United, as the Red Devils were there for the taking once injuries forced all three of their substitutions in the first half.

He is surely already aware of one crucial mistake though, as the charismatic German decided to start Milner at right-back over Alexander-Arnold only for it to backfire horrifically.

Alexander-Arnold had a nightmare dealing with Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford last season, perhaps what prompted the change, but the 20 year-old’s impact is at an all-time high, and he likely would have produced some magic with all the space Milner was afforded on Sunday.

In fact, the stats below suggest this was an absolutely catastrophic blunder from Klopp.

On the chalkboard

Per Simon Brundish, the Reds have earned a whopping 2.5 points per game in the 24 games Alexander-Arnold has played in this season, but they average just 1.58 points per game without the local lad, a mind-blowing difference.

This disparity carries on right across the board too, as the Reds’ goals, goals conceded, expected goals and expected goals against are all worse when the youngster is left out.

To really add salt into the wounds, Brundish states that Mohamed Salah is massively effected by Alexander-Arnold’s presence as well.

When the right-back plays, Salah scores or assists a goal every 95 minutes. Without the 5-cap England international, Salah manages a goal or assist every 131 minutes.

Given Salah’s struggles at Old Trafford last season, Klopp should have been doing everything in his power to get the best out of his talisman, and starting Alexander-Arnold may just have unlocked the Egyptian international.

If the Reds miss out on the league title by a couple of points, Klopp would be right to look back at this as perhaps his biggest blunder of the season.

Luka Milivojevic’s penalty record can explain lack of interest from Europe’s top clubs

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace went into their ill-fated midweek clash with Manchester United boasting a six-game unbeaten run having emerged victorious at Leicester on Saturday – the win was also their fourth in a row over the Foxes as Wilfried Zaha bagged a brace.

Restored in his left-wing role once again – the number 11 has been deployed frequently as a striker by Roy Hodgson this season – Zaha, who loves playing against Leicester, took his tally in the Premier League this season to seven.

It wouldn’t be a Palace win, though, if Luka Milivojevic didn’t net from the penalty spot – the Serbian converted from 12 yards after Jeffrey Schlupp was tripped in the area.

Palace’s captain has now scored an amazing 16 spot-kicks since signing for the Selhurst Park outfit in January 2017, with only four of his 20 Premier League goals coming from open play – this has led to many rival fans incorrectly labelling the 27-year-old a one-trick pony.

The former Olympiacos man’s incredible record from the spot means that the work he does away from the penalty spot often goes unnoticed, and this may be why he’s failed to attract interest from some of Europe’s bigger clubs.

Milivojevic, if not for his penalty penchant, will be remembered by fans – particularly those of Leicester, Southampton and Bournemouth – for his outrageous long shots that have often been the difference-makers in clashes where Palace have struggled to break their opposition down.

He isn’t just a goalscorer, though.

As of February 23rd, only one player had covered more ground than N’Golo Kante in the Premier League this season – that’s right, you guessed it, none other than Milivojevic, owing to the number 4’s iron lungs and incredible work-rate. The Selhurst Park faithful won’t be surprised to learn that the cult hero has the best engine in the Premier League and the fact he gets about more than Kante is some statement.

The Palace man also has a far better defensive output than the World Cup winner, completing 2.4 tackles and 1.8 interceptions per 90 to Kante’s 1.8 and 1.4, respectively – admittedly, the Chelsea number 7 has been deployed further afield this season, but the fact remains.

Milivojevic, though, is rarely deployed anywhere other than as a holding midfielder and, in this role, he thrives in being able to win the ball back for his side before delivering pinpoint passes into the likes of Zaha and Andros Townsend.

The 30-cap international’s passing range and vision is unmatched in the Palace ranks and, while the Serb may not be of the same mould as the Frenchman, he is capably filling the deep-lying creative void left by Yohan Cabaye’s departure in the summer.

Despite occasionally being guilty of gaffes on the edge of his own box – the 27-year-old conceded a penalty against Arsenal after having the ball nicked from his toe – he is generally comfortable in possession and is tackled only 0.6 times per 90 on average.

Watch the video below to see the most insane overhead kick you will see this week…

If his extraordinary output on the pitch wasn’t enough, the tough tackler is a huge hit with the Selhurst Park faithful, who have become accustomed to seeing their captain barrel straight for them after tucking away his customary pen in expert fashion.

Contrary to popular belief, Milivojevic is in fact a jack-of-all-trades and a master of one – as opposed to a one-trick pony – and it will be this oversight which will see him go right under the radar of the top clubs and establish himself as a Palace great.

Sutton tells Celtic to appoint Neil Lennon permanently

[ad_pod ]

Celtic fans are desperate to find out who will be in charge at Parkhead come the beginning of next season, and Chris Sutton thinks they should give the job to Neil Lennon.

It’s been a couple weeks now since Lennon replaced Brendan Rodgers at Celtic, and the dust has finally settled.

The Bhoys look a dead cert to win yet another league title as they chase ten in a row, and Lennon has proven that he was the perfect choice to take over at such short notice.

Looking ahead to next season though, there are plenty of discussions over who should take the helm, as Lennon is technically only at the club on an interim basis.

Sutton shared his view on the matter prior to Rangers’ match against Hibernian on Friday night.

What did he say?

“I actually think that he’s been there before, he knows the club well, they should appoint Neil as manager,” Sutton told BT Sport.

“If they don’t, it’s all going to be up in the air, Champions League qualifiers round again, big overhaul needed, and they have to start planning now. You have to start planning now.

“If they’re not going to appoint him now, they bring someone else in in the summer, it’s a mess.”

Short-sighted from Sutton?

Sutton’s final point is a poignant warning to Celtic, as the summer transfer window could be a complete and utter disaster if they take too long deciding on a new manager.

However, the club is always looking to go forward, as they were when they brought Rodgers to the club in the first place, and appointing a former manager like Lennon simply won’t allow them to do that.

Lennon was the right choice to take over on an interim basis, but the Bhoys should not settle for domestic dominance, and hiring Lennon would be to do just that.

As long as they sort the switch quickly at the start of the summer, allowing the new boss plenty of time to work with and transform his squad, the Hoops should ignore Sutton’s verdict on this one.

Arsenal fans react on Twitter to Gedion Zelalem sale

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal fans on Twitter have been left dumbfounded as it was announced that academy product Gedion Zelalem had departed the club on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old has moved to MLS outfit Sporting Kansas City, bringing a six-year association with the club to an abrupt and unfulfilled end and leaving many fans frustrated.

When the midfielder became the youngest Gunners player in FA Cup history in January 2014 by making an appearance against Coventry City, there was much excitement among Gooners, who believed that the club had a genuine talent on their hands.

The belief that Zelalem would one day break through and become a first-team regular is clearly one that was still held by fans up until he moved on to his native USA on Monday.

However, the relevant internal parties at Arsenal seemingly felt something different and have allowed Zelalem to switch North London for Kansas.
