Schneiderlin 2.0: An Everton swoop for Maxime Gonalons wouldn’t make sense

[ad_pod ]

According to L’Equipe, Everton are in talks with Roma over the availability of midfielder Maxime Gonalons in a potential loan deal, whilst West Ham are also in discussions with the Serie A side.

What’s the word then?

Well, the French international spent the entirety of last season on loan with La Liga side Sevilla, but featured sporadically due to an ankle injury in November which ruled him out for three months, and a tear to the abductor which set him back further.

Gonalons made just 13 appearances in all competitions as a result and didn’t feature enough to make an impact, hence his return to Roma, who also don’t seem intent on keeping him around.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

His next destination may well be the Premier League, with the Toffees and the Hammers in talks.

Wouldn’t make sense for Everton

Sporting Director Marcel Brands came out at the beginning of April and said that the club were targeting younger players, so a move for an injury prone 30-year-old would be strange in that respect.

Additionally, the Merseysiders already have a tall French international midfielder that they don’t use in Morgan Schneiderlin, who only made 14 Premier League appearances last term despite being injury free throughout.

The former Southampton man cost them around £24m when they signed him from Manchester United and he showed in his few appearances last season that he can still do a job in midfield, where his dominant physique and decent ball skills make him an excellent defensive midfielder.

There would be no point bringing in Gonalons when Schneiderlin is sat on his backside not being used, all whilst picking up a reported £100k-a-week; it would be a simply brainless move from Brands and Marco Silva.

Andre Gomes has also indicated that he wants a permanent move to Goodison Park, so focusing any effort at all into signing Gonalons would be stupid.

2 reasons why Aston Villa should not go for Matt Targett

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa are on a lookout for reinforcements now that they have clawed their way back to the Premier League. One of the areas Dean Smith is keen on improving is the backline, and the Sun reports he has found his target in Southampton’s left-back Matt Targett. Villa are reportedly ready to table a £10m offer to the Saints in order to secure their man this summer. However, looking strictly at the quality and the numbers of Targett, Villa should tread carefully because he might not be the perfect choice to strengthen their squad. With all of that in mind, here are two main reasons why Aston Villa should not go for him at all.

Targett doesn’t bring much to the table

Even though he is still only 23-years-old, Targett is still pretty much far from what a Premier League defender should look like. Even at Southampton, he was a second-choice left-back for the majority of the season, as the Saints preferred Ryan Bertrand, leaving Targett with only 16 appearances to his name throughout the campaign. When he did get the chance to play, this young defender didn’t really shine despite scoring once and assisting a further three along the way.

Southampton as a team conceded a total of 65 goals which makes them one of the more defensively liable teams in the Premier League. Even at a team that doesn’t really boast great defensive records or players, for that matter, Targett couldn’t win a spot in the starting line up. Sure, the competition is much tougher here than it is in the Championship where Aston Villa used to play, but now that they are returning once again, they will need something much better than that.

It’s money better spent in other areas

Looking strictly at the Championship and not focusing on the Premier League for a second, Aston Villa are near the top in most key statistical categories. However, they do seem like a defensively pretty solid team even when compared to the top teams in England as they boast some pretty impressive stats. For example, last season they averaged 19.9 tackles and 10 interceptions per game, which is more than just good. Of course, with the competition in the Premier League being a level higher, this could see a potential drop come next season but defence should not be their biggest worry.

If they are intent on setting out into the market this summer once again after a couple of deals already done, maybe they should focus on some other areas further up the pitch or find targets who are more of a reflection of the quality they need to stay up. The season is going to be long and difficult for the (old) newcomers and they should strengthen accordingly.

Crystal Palace fans hit out at Steve Parish after Aaron Wan-Bissaka exit agreement

[ad_pod ]

BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein revealed on Wednesday that a deal had been agreed between Crystal Palace and Manchester United for the transfer of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but Eagles fans were left far from happy with chairman and owner Steve Parish at the details involved.

The Guardian reported on Monday that the south London outfit were keen to not only get a guaranteed £50m up front for the 21-year-old, but to also cancel or at least reduce the 25% sell-on clause in Wilfried Zaha’s contract.

However, Ornstein confirmed on Wednesday that the initial deal is worth £45m – which could rise to £50m with add-ons – while the Red Devils will retain their clause for the Ivory Coast international.

While it has to be seen as a decent agreement for Palace seeing as the player has only made 42 first-team appearances for them, many obviously feel that Parish should have stuck to his guns in negotiations.

Supporters have been quick to show their unhappiness with the 53-year-old on Twitter, with one saying “Parish has bottled it”, and another saying “Parish caved in and we lost”.

If Palace sell Wan Bissaka and Zaha, will they be in another relegation battle? One fan gives his opinion in the video below…

The pressure – perhaps at least from these fans – will now be on the hierarchy to ensure that the club spend the Wan-Bissaka money wisely in the remainder of the window.

Here is just a selection of the reaction from the popular social media platform…

Derek Johnstone tells Ryan Kent to give up Liverpool bench for Rangers glory

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Rangers legend Derek Johnstone believes Ryan Kent should move to Ibrox rather than sit on the Liverpool bench next season, writing in his Evening Times column.

What’s the story?

Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard has confirmed that the club remain interested in doing a loan deal for the Reds winger after his successful spell at the club last season.

As yet there appears to have been no decision made, but Johnstone thinks that Ibrox could be the best place for the player next season.

The fans in the video below had some very strong words for Michel Platini who was detained over alleged corruption this week…

Writing in The Evening Times, the former striker said:

“The best he can hope for there, and this is no disrespect to Ryan because he is a smashing player, is to come off the bench here and there and maybe play in some cup games. That is down to the quality Liverpool have got.

“So he has to weigh up whether he comes back to Rangers, a place he knows well and where he enjoyed it last season, or he finds another club in England and Liverpool sell him.

“Rangers put four or five million quid on his value last season because of the experience he gained and the way that he played but now it is down to Ryan himself.

“He can’t be guaranteed anything at Anfield so if he wants to play regular football at a high level, and potentially win some silverware, then Rangers, working under Steven, is certainly an attractive option.

“Ryan loved his time up here and the European nights and the Old Firm games would have given him a taste for it. Come the end of the season, he could be a hero at Ibrox.”

Kent’s big decision

Breaking into a UEFA Champions League winning first-team certainly seems like a tall order for Kent, and Johnstone is right to suggest his action at Anfield will be severely limited next season.

Jurgen Klopp will likely take a look at his progress during the Reds’ upcoming pre-season training but with the club aiming to win the English Premier League next season then there’ll be little scope for Kent to play regularly.

At Rangers he was building a solid reputation for himself and becoming more and more popular with supporters.

As loan moves go, there is barely a better place for him to get the first-team football he needs next season.
