Rangers youngster issues message to crocked Celtic player

Rangers have had another hectic few days and the games will keep on coming for them right up until thenext international break in the middle of October. With European and domestic cup engagements threaded in-between league commitments, Steven Gerrard will have to use his whole squad and it remains to be seen, as well, whether he’ll dip into the youth team. There probably isn’t a pressing need to do that with the size of the Rangers squad, but he does have good young players that he can call upon if needed.Serge Atakayi might well be one of them, too, and he’s shown recently that not only is he a decent young player but also a decent person too.Indeed, after Celtic youngster Calvin Miller picked up a season-ending injury, he posted this message to his Instagram feed:

A touch of class from Atakayi that crosses one of the bitterest rivalries in football.

Is Moussa Djenepo the new Sadio Mane at Southampton?

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Sadio Mane cost Southampton just £10m.

When you think of the Senegal international’s excellent record at St Mary’s – he hit 25 goals and recorded 14 assists in 75 games – that simply has to go down as one of the best deals in the Saints’ history.

Of course, inflation makes that deal seem a lot cheaper than it would now be in modern day football, but it was still a phenomenal piece of deadline day business by the south coast club – they even grabbed Toby Alderweireld on the same day.

Surely, one would assume that a deal like the Mane one won’t be seen again for a while at St Mary’s, right?

Well, Ralph Hasenhuttl may have emulated the feat with a shrewd piece of business back in the summer.

£15m was sent in the direction of Standard Liege to secure the services of exciting young forward Moussa Djenepo in what seemed a relatively low-key move for an unknown quantity.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant start to his Southampton career since arriving in the Premier League, scoring two goals in three league appearances for the club.

You may be thinking: “Hang on, how are you even mentioning Djenepo and Mane in the same breath?”

But Hasenhuttl himself even told the BBC: “He has a few qualities we saw when Sadio was here at Southampton. He is very quick and his movements are phenomenal.”

Some supporters on Twitter have even made the comparison:

On the basis that Mane is a Champions League winning, UEFA Super Cup and Premier League Golden Boot winning forward, whereas Djenepo is an inexperienced, unknown quantity, you’d be forgiven for thinking the comparison is premature.

However, if you were to compare their early Premier League careers and their playing styles, there is definitely reason to suggest that they are similar players with comparable attributes, both signed for a bargain price.

Both men tend to line up on the left wing, where they enjoy cutting in onto their stronger right foot and having a go at goal – it should also be noted that they are both rapid, direct and nimble players.

Also, both men arrived on these shores with relatively low profiles, with Mane only previously dazzling in the not-so-well-documented Austrian league for RB Salzburg where he hit 45 goals in 87 appearances, whereas Djenepo found some decent form in Belgium with Standard Liege.

That both players moved to the Premier League at relatively young ages – Mane was 22 and Djenepo just 21 – adds another weight to the comparison.

To quickly emphasise Djenepo’s potential, it took Mane 13 Premier League games to score two goals, with his first coming against Stoke on the 25th October 2014, and the next coming against Crystal Palace on Boxing Day of that same year; Djenepo matched that total in just his first three games.

They haven’t just been tap-ins either – far from it.

The Mali international scored an absolutely delightful goal on his second appearance for the Saints, nonchalantly curling an effort into the top-right corner against Brighton to hand his side the lead and ultimately the win.

In his next appearance, Djenepo scored the only goal of the game to grab another three points against Sheffield United with yet another wonderful individual effort.

The young forward twisted away from Oliver Norwood with an extravagant piece of skill, before bearing down on goal and dropping a shoulder to work the angle – he then finished with precision into the bottom left corner.

It goes without saying that the 8-cap international has a long way to go if he wants to emulate Mane’s achievements in the game, although the early signs are extremely encouraging.

Southampton would surely have to work a miracle to repeat the genius of the Mane deal, wouldn’t they?

Perhaps Hasenhuttl has already overseen that masterstroke.

Sunderland fans freak out on Twitter as Black Cats sack Jack Ross

Finally, after a million 1-1 draws, Jack Ross has been sacked as manager of Sunderland.

Okay, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration, but the Black Cats drew a whopping 19 of their 46 league matches last season, and a remarkable 15 of those ended 1-1.

The former St. Mirren boss just could not figure out how to grab that second goal and put teams away, and his defensive style of play has certainly been his undoing.

Fans have pleaded with the club to get rid of the Scot on several occasions, and it seems they have finally got their way.

Unsurprisingly, the reaction on Twitter has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’ve collected some of the best responses from fans down below.

One member of the Stadium of Light faithful celebrated with the famous clip of Paolo Di Canio’s knee slide at St. James’ Park, while another requested the club sign Zinedine Zidane as a replacement.

Either way, the meltdown on Twitter is very enjoyable if you’re a Sunderland fan or otherwise, and you can find some of the best comments down below…

Everton fans discuss if club should take action over Cenk Tosun’s military salute celebration

Many Everton supporters have been discussing on social media whether or not the Blues should take any form of action over Cenk Tosun’s military salute celebration for Turkey.

Europe’s football governing body UEFA have said that they will be investigating the celebration given by Turkey’s national side, per the BBC, after several of their players offered a military salute when Tosun scored against Albania last week.

Tosun also shared a post on Instagram following the game, with the message: “For our nation, especially for the ones who are risking their lives for our nation.”

Turkey’s army are currently clashing with Kurdish fighters in areas of northern Syria controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, with dozens of civilians and fighters killed on both sides.

The offensive move by Turkey sparked the Syrian government to send its army to the northern border to try and halt the advances, via the BBC, in a decision taken after the United States withdrew all of its remaining troops from the area; they had been a close ally of the SDF, who were heavily bombarded over the weekend.

UEFA disciplinary rules prohibit any form of political gesture, or an act that is intended to provoke a reaction on political, ideological or religious beliefs.

German Bundesliga 2 outfit FC St. Pauli have recently parted company with one of their players, Cenk Sahin, for his involvement in Turkey’s military salute celebration and a subsequent post on his Instagram account, with the Hamburg-based club releasing the midfielder with immediate effect on Monday.

The club took action after an internal investigation which included discussions with fans, board members and friends with roots in Turkey.

A statement by St. Pauli read: “Sahin has been released from his training and playing duties with immediate effect. The prime factors in reaching the decisions were his repeated disregard for the club’s values and the need to protect the player.

“After numerous discussions with fans, members and friends whose roots lie in Turkey, it has become clear to us that we cannot and should not attempt to gauge nuances in perceptions and attitudes from other cultural backgrounds in detail.”

Some Everton supporters have now suggested their side should do likewise with Tosun, although there is a clear break among fans who feel the Blues should not intervene in matters that did not occur at club level.

Here are some of the messages shared…

Michael Owen: The goal-scoring hero unloved by all

It would be ludicrous to claim that Liverpool supporters love their own more than any other fan-base. It would be entirely reasonable however to state that no other fan-base loves their own more than Liverpool supporters.

Their adoration of Mo Salah is a case in point with the Egyptian and his footballing prowess maternally embraced by the Kop. To the rest of the game he is Salah. To Reds he is ‘Mo’. Virgil van Dijk is another enthusiastically cherished and who need never buy a pint in the Merseyside area again for the rest of his days. Woe betide FIFA if they do not award the towering centre-back with a Ballon d’Or award this December for the flood of protests that will inevitably follow and this is because Liverpool fans are extremely protective of their favoured sons, revered as they are.

Looking to the recent past Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres were similarly lavished with love prior to their respective moves to Barcelona and Chelsea and if you happen to be a Scouser then such worshipping can be ramped up by the power of ten. There was Stevie G of course, and Robbie Fowler, otherwise known as ‘God’.

In May 1997 a 17-year-old striker scored on his professional debut and didn’t stop scoring for the rest of his career. In his seven years with the club he would go on to slot home 158 in 297 appearances, an astonishing haul that included a late double to secure FA Cup glory in 2001. During his time in L4, Michael Owen won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and the Ballon d’Or, the latter illustrating on a global level he was regarded as a superior talent to Gerrard or Fowler.

Time and time and time again when Liverpool needed him he was there, popping up with yet another priceless goal; creating another priceless memory and each time, cherub-of-face he would raise both arms aloft and run to a celebrating mass. Owen may not have been a Scouser but born in Chester he was local to the area and what’s more he had come through the Liverpool ranks, smashing goal-scoring records for fun along the way.

He was one of their own.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Yet mention Owen’s name to any Liverpool fan now and note the soured expression. Three years ago the recently-retired forward was made the club’s first international ambassador and their collective appalled response to the appointment said a great deal. Twelve months later a petition began to have him removed from the post. After fulfilling every metric to be a beloved hero he is not even liked these days.

For most though it’s as if they’d just rather forget that Michael Owen wore their shirt at all.

The easy answer to explain why this is lies in the manner of his departure from Anfield in 2004 that saw repeated declarations that he planned to stay amidst protracted contract negotiations only for Real Madrid to swoop for a knock-down fee. No fan, regardless of affiliation takes kindly to that. To then make matters significantly worse Owen went on to play for Manchester United, a cardinal sin for any player with Liverpool on their C.V.

But if these actions went a long way in dismantling Owen’s pedestal there is a deeper truth that cannot be elucidated by circumstances; a truth that is much more anecdotal and reliant on personal memories. It is that comparative to other high-achieving Liverpool stars past or present Michael Owen was never really loved in the first place.

As journalist Joe Rimmer recalled in the Echo last month: “Still just 21, the world was at his feet, but one thing was missing. The love of the Kop. Chants for Owen were barely heard. Very little songs on the terraces, no matter how many goals he scored.”

“Owen never enjoyed the affection that, say, Robbie Fowler was afforded by Liverpool fans, despite his achievements at Anfield.”

Liverpool supporter and writer Henry Jackson meanwhile tells Football Fancast:

“He was certainly never idolised by the masses. In Robbie Fowler, you had a true working class hero with a great personality, who you could imagine invading the pitch as a fan in the Kop. Owen, on the other hand, felt more middle class, lacking in character and, ultimately, never a true football lover.”

“I actually think he was harshly treated at times because of these things, but he didn’t always help himself, often treating England as a bigger deal and talking more about horse racing than football.”

As someone who grew up nearby during that time I concur with all of the above and considered it odd the relative detachment and lack of connection given that the player ticked every box to have him adopted and adored.

Watch a Liverpool fan discover the internet and get a nasty surprise in the video below…

Precisely why this was leads us only to conjecture. Was it – as Henry alludes to – Owen’s personality, or lack of, that prompted an absence of adoration? Did people just get a particular vibe from him? If so that is a fascinating and rare phenomenon where achievement is not enough, particularly as Owen never bad-mouthed the club during his tenure or did anything to sour a relationship that was distanced to begin with.

Certainly Owen came across as something of a closed book, someone who seemed as clinical off the pitch as he was in the six yard box. He was after all a player who Liam Gallagher once famously described as ‘trainee CID’. And yes, there was his apparent apathy towards a sport that makes grown men cry. All of this made his team-mates relatable but Owen resemble a star employee.

And this unerring remoteness also explains why Manchester United fans never really took to him despite scoring a 96th minute winner in a derby, while among Newcastle fans his name is mud following a troubled time in the North East.

“How can a player who scored as many goals as he did be so unloved by the fans of every team he played for?” Liverpool blogger David Usher enquired in 2014 as per ESPN.

We can factor in the departure to Madrid. We can highlight Owen’s ill-judged recent comments about Newcastle being a ‘downward step’ and incorporate too the suspicion that was always going to accompany a former Liverpool player going to Old Trafford. But ultimately, harshly, it really does come down to the man.

This weekend Liverpool head up the M62 to take on their bitter rivals United.

Neither fan-base will sing Owen’s name. Both may rather forget that he wore their shorts at all.

Southampton fans praise Danny Ings as rich vein of form continues

Some Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to heap praise on Danny Ings, after the in-form striker kept his rich vein of form going with a goal against Wolves. The former Liverpool forward – who cost the Saints £20m – has now scored five goals in his last four games in all competitions.

Ings started his fine run with a double in the south coast derby game against Portsmouth, before finding the net against Tottenham, Chelsea and then Wolves in the 1-1 draw last time out.

The Southampton No.9 had six shots against the Midlands-based side, hitting the target with three of them while also winning three fouls.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have only scored nine league goals this term, with Ings responsible for four of them.

One fan below said that the 1-cap England international is going to be “pivotal” to the Saints this year, whilst another supporter said that he can’t understand why some give Ings stick.

Let’s take a look at what some more of the Southampton fans on Twitter have been saying about Ings…
