Everton’s Doucoure struggles at Liverpool

Abdoulaye Doucoure was lucky to not let Carlo Ancelotti down as Everton recorded a historic 2-0 win at Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby on Saturday evening.

The Toffees had not won away to their Stanley Park neighbours in 22-years and were winless in more than a decade, with the Reds victorious in 11 of the previous 23 meetings across all competitions.

Goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson in either half ensured the Blues won on this occasion. After just three minutes and the Iceland international converting from the spot with seven minutes left of the second period, the Brazilian broke the deadlock.

Everton rarely dominated proceedings at Anfield and ended the match with just 29% of the possession, far below their average 47.6% share for the Premier League season, which rises to 47.7% when away from Goodison Park, per WhoScored.

Doucoure played a key role in Liverpool being able to stay on the ball for large periods of the match, with the Frenchman often wasteful in possession and frequently unable to win possession back.

Andre Gomes also endured his troubles in the Merseyside Derby and was, at times, a red card waiting to happen in the first half. The former FC Barcelona maestro was additionally pickpocketed by Thiago Alcantara 25-yards from goal early in the second period, though Roberto Firmino could only provide a weak finish to leave Jordan Pickford untested.

Gomes was eventually replaced by Sigurdsson a quarter of an hour into the second half, leaving Doucoure to carry the unwanted honour of being carried by his teammates after an often-uninspiring performance from Everton’s £20m summer capture.

Doucoure has been lauded for his efforts since joining the Blues from Watford in September, with former Toffees striker Kevin Campbell describing the £75k-per-week enforcer as “one of the most underrated players in the Premier League”.

Saturday’s outing was Doucoure’s 28th for Everton across all competitions, starting all 23 of his Premier League appearances and playing the full 90 minutes for the 18th time.

However, it returned his third-worst SofaScore match rating for the Blues at 6.3 out of 10, only at home to Manchester City on Wednesday night (6.0) and against Leeds United (6.2) in November has the 28-year-old performed worse.

Doucoure scored so lowly against Liverpool that only Gomes (5.9) was marked worse among those who started for the visitors, yet his performance was actually inferior to the Portuguese’s thanks partly to a worse pass success rating (81% to 87%).

The ex-Hornets star additionally only made one further accurate pass (21) than Gomes (20), despite featuring for 31 minutes extra. Doucoure averages an 86% success rate in the Premier League this season, the same as Gomes, who outperformed his standards at Anfield.

Both were poor in the duel, with Doucoure winning four of 13 ground contests for a 23% success rate while Gomes won just one of eight for a 12.5% success rate.

Gomes was also dribbled past thrice while Doucoure was beaten on the ground four times to see that both were lucky to not let Ancelotti down as Everton registered a rare win over the Reds.

Had Doucoure been on a yellow card instead of Gomes, it would not have been a surprise if his number was the one to have been shown for Sigurdsson’s second-half introduction.

Wolves: Delort really close to signing in January

During the January transfer window, there was seemingly only one thing on Wolves’ mind; signing a new striker.

Raul Jimenez has been out since November while as fights back from a sickening fractured skull and the squad have never truly recovered from losing the Mexican.

What’s the word?

Wolves targeted a number of forwards in January from Olivier Giroud and Divock Origi to Willian Jose, the man they eventually signed on loan from Real Sociedad.

Andy Delort was another player on the club’s radar and it’s recently been revealed by Jeunes Footeux that the Premier League outfit were incredibly close to signing him from Montpellier last month.

The article took an in-depth look at the players linked with a move away from the Ligue 1 club and it was Delort who was seemingly the most sought-after.

This is the second time Wolves have tried to sign Delort after Kenny Jackett attempted to add him to the Old Gold’s ranks back in 2014.

Forget Jose

On paper, Jose looked every bit the perfect Jimenez replacement. He is tall, can hold the ball up and as his record of 62 goals at Sociedad tells you, he can also find the net.

Truth be told, Wolves have been better since his arrival. They have tasted defeat just once in the league after he was signed but unfortunately, he’s not found the net himself.

Jose has six Premier League appearances to his name and although he’s offered a greater presence in attack than either Patrick Cutrone or Fabio Silva, he’s not exactly getting himself in the right positions to score.

With that in mind, should Delort have been signed instead? Quite possibly.

The 29-year-old is enjoying a brilliant season in France where he’s netted ten goals in 21 outings, taking his overall Montpellier tally to 36 strikes. In the process, Delort has registered seven assists this season too.

Like Jimenez, he is adept at bringing others into play and for a man who professes he is “crazy about scoring,” he’s rather selfless.

Delort has everything you’d want in a forward. He can rattle the back of the net consistently, has pace that usurps Kylian Mbappe and he’s also supreme in the air.

He’s won 4.1 aerial duels per game this season, a statistic that defeats everyone at Wolves; even Willy Boly and Leander Dendoncker.

The Frenchman typifies a dynamic forward and judging by his array of qualities, surely would have suited the Premier League. Time will tell whether it was a mistake to bring Jose in over Delort.

AND in other news, Wolves may already have next Coady in rarely-seen 19 y/o who’s “always had potential”…

Benitez drop potential hint amid Celtic link

Celtic are currently linked with a number of names to potentially come in and replace the recently departed Neil Lennon. The Irishman left the club amid talks of his sacking after the Hoops have suffered a lacklustre season in both the Premiership and Europa League.

One name that has been heavily flirted with the idea of stepping in is Rafael Benitez. Before Lennon left the club, The Mirror reported that he was heavily in the picture to take over as head coach following his decision to leave his position in China. Whilst talks may have gone a little quiet since, bookmakers are still including him in the running to take the job.

Benitez himself has since come out with a rather interesting statement about his next career move. Speaking to the Daily Record, the Spaniard admitted he has had “so many offers” since he became available again “from South America to the Emirates”, however he isn’t looking to pursue any of these options.

“I want to stay in Europe and I want to do so to be competitive at a high level,” Benitez continued. “I’m looking for a project that will allow me to be competitive and with time and space to grow.”

This is definitely something to prick up the ears of fans and professionals alike. Due to their disappointing 2020/21 season, Celtic are very much in need of a squad revamp and a new set of managerial tactics. Benitez found success with Liverpool and boasts a Champions League trophy and FA Cup. He also won the Europa League with Chelsea and the Club World Cup with Inter Milan, just to name a few of his accolades.

He managed to drive Newcastle to their promotion from the Championship back in 2016 too, showing he has what it takes to challenge in both league and cup competitions.

His pedigree speaks for itself and his desire to stay in Europa and take on a project that needs some TLC is very telling. Perhaps the Celtic job has been earmarked by the Spaniard as the season in Scotland rounds off.

Bamford has outshone Raphinha for Leeds

Amid all the plaudits that have been heading Raphinha’s way recently, the spotlight has somewhat faded away from Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have enjoyed an impressive season in the Premier League thus far, and their summer signing Raphinha has certainly lit up Elland Road with some moments of magic, whether that be a spectacular free-kick or a jaw-dropping piece of skill.

However, while the Brazilian may be the man in the headlines, it’s arguably Bamford who’s been Bielsa’s key man.

Speaking just last month, Match of the Day pundit and former Arsenal striker Ian Wright waxed lyrical about the striker, and even gave credit to the club’s fanbase for the role they’ve had in Bamford’s successes.

He said: “You look at what Bamford has been through, six loan moves, his upbringing, private school stuff, Palace fans complaining about the way he runs – he has been through so much. People told him he would never be a Premier League striker.

“But Leeds fans deserve credit for sticking by him, even when you looked at some of those games and he did miss some easy chances. The manager stuck with him, and it will be difficult to find a manager with as much faith in Bielsa.”

As Wright says, Bamford has faced a lot of criticism over the years, including from some of his teams’ own supporters, so for him to make the step-up to Premier League level and look like he belongs is a real credit to him and his work ethic, and most importantly his mental strength.

Whether he’s been playing with a chip on his shoulder is only something he can say, but it’s fair to suggest that he’s well and truly silenced a lot of the doubters.

In 26 games in the Premier League, he’s scored 13 goals, while he’s also picked up five assists – stats which rank him first in both categories for Leeds.

With 12  games to go in the competition, you wouldn’t put it past him to go on another hot streak and finish the campaign by breaking the 20-goal barrier, and that really would put him in historic company – only five players in the Premier League era have scored more than 20 goals in a league season for a newly-promoted side.

So while Raphinha may be the man of the moment, the £35k-a-week earning Bamford has arguably been Bielsa’s biggest success story and hero this season in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Leeds could sign another Raphinha in this star…
