Australia v India – The most exciting contest in recent times?

There was little in the early stages of Australia’s recent tour of India to suggest that one of the most exciting Test and One-day series of cricket history was about to take place

Arshad Chughtai20-Apr-2001There was little in the early stages of Australia’s recent tour of India to suggest that one of the most exciting Test and One-day series of cricket history was about to take place. Australia under Steve Waugh was on the crest of a wave. Before embarking on the tour the team had created history by winning a sequence 15 tests and 10 one-day internationals. Odds, therefore, were heavily in favour of the tourists when the series began. But as events proved later, the breathtaking and exciting cricket produced by the two teams credited the test and one-day series to be ranked amongst the best of all times. India won the Test series 2-1 and Australia took the ODI series 3-2. Both the series were so closely fought that there was little to choose between the two teams. In fact, in the end cricket was the true winner.Test Series – A brief view
Support popular expectations, Australia outplayed India in the first match at Mumbai by 10 wickets. Sachin Tendulkar with knocks of 76 and 65 was the lone Indian fighter. In the following test match at Calcutta, by mid point it looked a tall order for the Indians, in the first instance, to avert an innings defeat after being forced to follow-on. But the Indians produced an amazing performance. They amazed the world and came back in the match to win by 171 runs. VVS Laxman (281) and Harbhajan Singh (7 for 123, including a hat-trick and 6 for 73) were the two heroic performances to be long remembered. The third and final test match at Chennai was even more thrilling. Australia piled up 391. India replied with 501 and then contained Australia to 264 in the second innings. Set to make 155 runs in the fourth innings India slumped from 101 for 2 to 151 for 8, but in the seesaw final moments of fluctuating fortunes, India snatched the match by 2 wickets and, thus, won the series.Review of One-day series 1. Bangalore
India convincingly won the first match at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore by 60 runs after piling up 315 in 49.5 overs. R Dravid (80), V Shewag (58), V Dahiya (51) and VV Laxman (45) were the principal contributors. Shane Warne was ineffective with one wicket for 58 runs. Despite Matthew Hayden’s 99 off 89 balls and Michael Bevan’s 49, Australian innings was completed for 255 runs in 43.3 overs. V. Shewag earned Man of the Match award.2. Pune
Mark Waugh hit an unbeaten 133 off 138 balls (his 18th century in one-day internationals, studded with 15 fours) to enable Australia to crush India by 8 wickets, surpassing their total of 248 for 9 with 29 deliveries to spare. Matthew Hayden (the prolific 549 scorer in the test series) scored 57. Earlier, left-handed HK Badani scored a career best 100 for India. McGrath, Fleming and Bracken shared two wickets each.3. Indore
India again took lead in the series. Sachin Tendulkar surpassed 10,000 one-day runs during his 28th century. Tendulkar 139 (125 balls) and VV Laxman 83 were associated in a 199-run second-wicket stand in 29.4 overs. India scored 299 for 8 and later dismissed Australia for 181 in just 35.5 overs to win the match by 118 runs.4. Visakhapatnam
Australia came back and leveled the series. Batting first, the tourists scored a mammoth 338. Matthew Hayden (111) and Ricky Ponting (101) scored centuries. Despite Sachin Tendulkar’s hurricane 62 of 38 balls, India could manage only 245 (45 overs) in their turn. Shane Warne was back into his element with 3 for 38. Australia won by 93 runs.5. Margao
Australia won the decider and clinched the one-day rubber by 3-2. In a thrilling encounter VV Laxman 101 (his maiden one-day century) and skipper SC Ganguly 74 helped India post an imposing total of 265-6. Australia was well placed at 187 for 3 but soon three quick wickets fell. Indians smelled victory but MG Bevan and IJ Harvey overcame the panic to steer Australia to a well-deserved 4-wicket victory. Bevan remained unbeaten on 87. Sachin Tendulkar with his 3 for 35 picked up his hundredth one-day wicket.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Charlton friendly

Crystal Palace will take on local rivals Charlton Athletic in a pre-season friendly, the club confirmed on Friday morning.

And, as to be expected, a number of Eagles fans have been reacting to the news on social media.

Palace revealed that they will take on the Addicks at Selhurst Park on Tuesday, 27th July.

The two sides faced off in a pre-season friendly prior to the 2020/21 campaign, with Eberechi Eze starring in what was his first appearance as a Palace player.

Eze won’t be available this time around, though, after he suffered a serious injury in training which will keep him out for at least six months.

The Eagles are still on the search for a new manager, and you’d hope the club will have found Roy Hodgson’s long-term successor by the time they take on the League One side next month.

Palace fans react

Palace shared the news on their official Twitter page, with a number of supporters giving their immediate reaction to the fixture below, with one describing the match as ‘tasty’.

Astle and Fleming set up fine win for New Zealand to clinch series

A record-breaking all wickets partnership of 193 runs by Nathan Astle and Stephen Fleming set New Zealand up for a thrilling National Bank series win over Pakistan in Dunedin today

Lynn McConnell28-Feb-2001A record-breaking all wickets partnership of 193 runs by Nathan Astle and Stephen Fleming set New Zealand up for a thrilling National Bank series win over Pakistan in Dunedin today. It was hard to believe that New Zealand had struggled all summer to fulfil an opening stand of any quality. The pair, long standing batting partners from their earliest days with Canterbury, dominated a Pakistan attack, including some fiery moments when Shoaib Akhtar managed two or three of the fastest overs seen in the country for some time.Akhtar limped out of the bowling attack after bowling only five overs, most of the last over being delivered off a short run up as he once again struggled with a thigh muscle injury. He came back for 4.1 overs and bowled off a short run.The New Zealanders bettered the all wickets stand of 180 made by Ken Rutherford and Adam Parore set against India in Baroda in 1994/95.Along the way they dusted off the opening record of 158 set by Martin Crowe and John Wright against Bangladesh in Sharjah in 1989/90 while they also passed the 153 achieved by Astle and Mathew Sinclair against Zimbabwe in Wellington in January.Fleming said the side knew from the outset of the summer that Pakistan would be a tough series to win and to come through and win 3-2 had been a good test of character.”We’re delighted. It is nice to have something on the board for the work we’ve been doing,” he said.”It was very important to get wickets at the end and stop them short of 300. We did that in Nairobi and we did it again here.”It was a great wicket again,” he said.New Zealand suffered a hiccup in the latter stages of its chase when losing three wickets in five balls for one run. But Chris Harris and Jacob Oram added 38 runs for the seventh wicket with Oram hitting a six of the first ball of the penultime over to wrap up the win.Pakistan twice had the chance to put New Zealand on the rack with the bat – but they fluffed it both times. At 90/1 off 15 overs and with Shahid Afridi threatening to launch into even more of an assault than he had already achieved while hitting 50 off 40 balls. But the wily Chris Harris undid him at the right time from New Zealand’s point of view, having him caught at the wicket by wicket-keeper Adam Parore for 65 scored from 55 balls. It featured some thrilling hitting and the runs came quickly after he had got over a poor patch of playing and missing at the start of his innings.Pakistan was then required to rebuild and it took its time. Just when Abdur Razzaq and Yousuf Youhana began to up the tempo, Fleming brought back Daryl Tuffey for his second spell and he had Razzaq chasing a rising ball which Parore held.Youhana and Imran Farhat formed an unlikely combination, given Farhat’s poor form earlier in the series, and they added 68 off 73 balls. At 225/3 in the 42nd over, Pakistan, with Yousuf in full cry, looked to be set to score more than 300, but Craig McMillan’s belated arrival at the bowling crease for the over concerned saw Yousuf out, leg before wicket for 68, and set in train a string of events which saw Pakistan all out three balls short of the 50 overs for 285.Moin Khan hit out superbly for a 20-ball 36 but as McMillan found the sort of bowling form at the death New Zealand has been looking for all summer, he gained a suitable ally in Jacob Oram and four wickets fell in nine balls. It was a fine effort in pulling back a side on the loose and made New Zealand’s chase that much easier.Pakistan captain Moin said the 285 was a good target to defend.”They played really well, they deserved to win. We missed a few catches in the beginning and there was pathetic fielding from our side today.”We tried our best but we didn’t bowl to the targets today.”We were 20-25 runs short in the end.”We will have to come back hard if we want to win the Test series. We have to learn from our mistakes,” he said.

Fry: Steve Parish will have final say on Crystal Palace manager

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that he expects Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish to have the final say in the club’s search for a new manager.

Palace seemed close to appointing former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo as Roy Hodgson’s successor, but that now looks to be off.

Prior, Football Insider had suggested that there were disagreements at boardroom level between Parish and director of football Dougie Freedman over who should be the club’s next manager.

It remains to be seen where Palace turn to now, but Fry is adamant the final decision will lie with Parish.

Asked by TT who is likely to come out on top, Parish or Freedman, the director of football said:

“Steve Parish, mate, but Dougie’s brilliant. He’s in charge of recruitment there and what have you.

“Steve Parish loves his club and does what’s best for it. Several names have been mentioned and I think it’s going to be a long-term project.

“Whoever is appointed manager, Steve and Dougie have got to back him. They can have their own ideas and mention them and they can discuss it, but there’s only one person in charge at clubs of, you know, picking the team and that’s the manager.”

Palace had previously been linked with the likes of ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard and Barnsley’s Valerien Ismael. Perhaps they are two names the club could revisit now that Nuno is off the table.

Ball drops Benitez bombshell after Everton backlash - exclusive

Former Everton star Michael Ball believes that the club’s proposed appointment of Rafael Benitez may be called off because of the overwhelmingly negative reaction to the news.

Reports suggest that the Spaniard is the current frontrunner to take over at Goodison Park after Carlo Ancelotti departed to rejoin Real Madrid.

Benitez would become the very first boss to manage both Liverpool and Everton if he did end up taking over in Merseyside.

Indeed, the 61-year-old spent a total of six years at Anfield between 2004 and 2010 and won a clutch of trophies, lifting the FA Cup and the Champions League during his time with the Reds. He also won the UEFA Super Cup and the Community Shield.

Liverpool fans continue to sign about Benitez, and he is widely regarded as an iconic figure on the red side of the city.

Various pundits, including ex-Toffees goalkeeper Neville Southall, have rejected the prospect of Benitez coming into the role at Everton and Ball now thinks that the backlash could see the Toffees rethink the potential appointment.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I feel with the negative reaction with Rafa, I can’t see it happening now.

“I know he’s still favourite, I know what we’ve read on social media in the last few hours, I just feel it might be put on hold. Just to see how it settles over the next few days.

“I think he’s had a second interview, Nuno (Espirito Santo) had two interviews, so they may be revisiting managers that they’ve already spoken to before they make this huge decision.”
