Palmer expects West Brom to demand £40m for Pereira and Johnstone

West Brom will be looking for around £40m combined for Matheus Pereira and Sam Johnstone, says the club’s former midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Both players are being heavily linked with moves away from The Hawthorns following West Brom’s relegation to the Championship.

According to Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor, West Ham have held talks with Pereira’s representatives over a potential transfer. And prior, Sky Sports claimed that the east London club had made an unsuccessful bid for Johnstone.

The offer was thought to be worth £6m, well short of what ex-West Brom striker Kevin Phillips expects them to get.

He told West Brom News that the Midlands club should be receiving £20m each for Johnstone and Pereira, a sentiment Palmer also shares.

“For sure, for sure,” the former England international told FFC when asked if he agreed with Phillips. “But, you see, they’re in a position West Brom where clubs will know they’re wanting to offload these players because of the fact that they were relegated.

“Still, you’d be expecting West Brom to be looking for that type of money for those two players.”

In regards to Johnstone specifically, it is hard to imagine West Ham going from £6m to £20m. However, with both Arsenal and Tottenham said to be interested, West Brom should still be able to get a decent fee for the goalkeeper.

Marlborough identity Arthur Cresswell dies

Former Wellington and Central Districts player Arthur Cresswell died in Blenheim on Saturday, four days short of his 85th birthday

Lynn McConnell06-Aug-2002Former Wellington and Central Districts player Arthur Cresswell died in Blenheim on Saturday, four days short of his 85th birthday.Few people showed the devotion, or ingenuity, Cresswell displayed in trying to advance his cricket career.Cresswell had the disadvantage, in cricket terms, of living in Blenheim on the north eastern point of New Zealand’s South Island. While a regular inter-island ferry service now links his part of the country with Wellington on the North Island, the service wasn’t quite as good in the immediate post-World War Two years. And there was no Central Districts team in those days. Players with first-class aspirations had to be seen in one of the four main centres, and Wellington was supposed to cater for Marlborough players of ability.Cresswell wasn’t satisfied with relying on performing in a one-off Town v Country game to impress the selectors. He decided to play club cricket in Wellington. He commuted every weekend from Blenheim to Wellington – by Tiger Moth aeroplane! It was an example of dedication beyond belief, especially to anyone who knows the rigours of attempting to land in any sort of plane in Wellington’s notorious winds. In 1948/49, his big goal was to gain selection in the team to tour Britain, and in the three Plunket Shield matches he played, his maiden first-class games, he topped both the wicket aggregate and averages with his 19 wickets at 14.26. He added three more wickets in the final trial match. Yet it was his brother Fen Cresswell who was plucked from nowhere to make the tour.Fen had played with Arthur in two of three trial matches, the South Island Major Associations v South Island XI, North Minor Associations v South Minor Associations and New Zealand v The Rest. In those games Fen took 18 wickets at a cost of 15.11.The New Zealand Cricket Almanack made Arthur Cresswell its bowler of the year in 1949, the same year in which he received New Zealand’s premier bowling trophy, the Winsor Cup.”Standing six feet in height, of splendid physique and extremely fit, Arthur Cresswell looks every inch the part of a fast bowler. Fast-medium right hand, Cresswell is able to obtain swerve to his deliveries and makes the ball fly off the pitch. Dangerous with the new ball, he is a natural bowler, allying good length with direction, and making the batsmen play every ball by bowling at the wickets all the time,” the Almanack recorded. He was first selected for Marlborough as an 18-year-old in 1935 from his Wairau Club, the club he had a long association with in Blenheim.During war service he was a leading member of the New Zealand Army XI, a notable side captained by Jack Lamason and including players like Bert Sutcliffe, Don Taylor, Verdun Scott, Martin Donnelly and Eric Tindill.Lamason was the first to suggest to Cresswell that he should play in a major centre after the war. However, he returned to Blenheim and played for Marlborough. But in a Newman Shield match against Nelson in 1948, he had match figures of six for 37 and five for 77, and a trio of cricket notables, Jack Newman, Herb McGirr and Edgar Neale impressed on him that he should look to play in a major centre. As a result, members of the Wairau Club raised the finance to allow him to fly across Cook Strait each week to play for the Wellington club. His chances of playing for Wellington province were greatly assisted by his performance in the Wellington v Hutt Valley trial match in which he took five for 32, including a hat-trick, of which the last victim was the up and coming John Reid. After his first season with Wellington, he became a foundation player in the first Central Districts side of 1950/51 playing five games for the side and taking 10 more first-class wickets. He continued to be involved in cricket in his region and was a patron of the Marlborough Cricket Association.

Um time possível é: Renan Ribeiro, Araruna, Maicon, Rodrigo Caio e Júnior Tavares; Jucilei, Cícero e Thiago Mendes; Wellington Nem, Luiz Araújo e Gilberto.

INGRESSOS

Goleiros: Denis e Renan Ribeiro
Defensores: Junior Tavares, Breno, Douglas, Maicon, Lucão, Lugano e Rodrigo Caio
Meio-campistas: Araruna, Cícero, João Schmidt, Jucilei, Lucas Fernandes, Thiago Mendes, Shaylon e Wellington
Atacantes: Luiz Araújo, Chavez, Gilberto, Wellington Nem e Neilton

Leeds could sign a new Pablo Hernandez in Pereira

Leeds United could sign their new Pablo Hernandez in West Brom play-maker Matheus Pereira amid a transfer update.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days and weeks have suggested that the Whites are interested in signing the Brazilian this summer, but it appears the Yorkshire club may face some significant competition.

According to ESPN Brazil, fellow Premier League side West Ham are very much in the race to sign the £13.5m-rated star, and that while Pereira is interested in a move to link up with Marcelo Bielsa’s side, he’s also keen on playing European football – something he would get with the Hammers.

Leeds’ new Pablo Hernandez

Hailed as a “genius” who “who has a technical ability that I have never seen before” by former Nurnberg coach Nate Weiss, Pereira enjoyed a superb campaign in the Premier League last season, netting 11 goals and provided a further six assists as he tried to rescue his Baggies side from relegation.

Former Leeds ace Noel Whelan has already raved about the thought of Pereira helping to form a dream attack at Leeds, saying: “It is a mouth-watering prospect. We missed out on certain players last season, and this is a player that excites everybody. I would definitely take him all day long.

“He’s a fantastic player, he’s great on the ball, he can turn people inside out. Pereira’s another option we can use right across that front three and maybe in a number 10 role as well. He’s the right age and he’s the sort of player we should be looking at. Imagine, if you put him alongside Raphinha, Rodrigo, Harrison etc, that’s pretty formidable.”

And, after a superb display against Aston Villa, BBC Sport pundit Jermain Jenas said of the 25-year-old: “He’s just silky. When he’s on it, he’s just got that lovely left-foot, (tucked) his penalty away, the delivery into the box for set-pieces was brilliant, and he wanted to showcase his skills.”

At his best, Hernandez was similarly creative and exciting to watch, with his nimble footwork and eye for goal being a huge part of the Whites’ resurgence in the last couple of years. As per Whoscored, in the 2018/2019 campaign in which he scored 12 and set up another 12, he averaged a whopping three key passes and 2.7 shots per game in the Championship.

In 175 games for the club, the little Spaniard netted 36 goals and provided another 41 assists, a remarkable feat given that Hernandez was well into his 30s when he joined up at Elland Road.

In Pereira, Victor Orta could bring about an instant Hernandez successor to Leeds.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has dropped an exciting Leeds United transfer update…

Pundit shocked Everton signed Andros Townsend - Exclusive

Dean Windass was surprised to see Everton sign Andros Townsend, but reckons it was a no-brainer on a free transfer.

Following five up and down seasons with Crystal Palace, the 28-year-old made the switch to Merseyside earlier this month after his contract at Selhurst Park ran out.

Having failed to become a regular first-teamer at Tottenham, the winger finally found himself a home with Palace.

However, whilst Townsend was no stranger the spectacular, epitomised by his goal of the season effort against Manchester City back in December 2018, he often lacked consistency during his five-year stay in south London and wasn’t always in Roy Hodgson’s best team.

However, having performed impressively during his brief spell with Newcastle in the second half of the 2015-2016 campaign, Townsend has linked up with Rafael Benitez once again – with the Spaniard the Magpies manager during that period.

Everton have finished above Crystal Palace in all but one of the last eight seasons since their return to the Premier League, and Windass exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“It’s a great bit of business on a free, but it’s a big surprise to me. He’s not pulled up anything for a few seasons at Crystal Palace. But it’s a new club, new manager, they give you that big lift, confidence.

“Players like Andros Townsend on a free transfer, you’re not going to be short of clubs after you, because you don’t become a bad player overnight.”

`Best chance ever'

We have come here to win and if we don’t win, we haven’t achieved our mission

Haydn Gill01-Sep-2002We have come here to win and if we don’t win, we haven’t achieved our mission.Hendy Springer isn’t mincing his words ahead of today’s Red Stripe Bowl final between title-starved Barbados and Jamaica. But winning will not be easy. Jamaica are very worthy opposition and I’ve got a lot of respect for them and I am sure they have a lot of respect for us, the Barbados coach added.Mindful of the fact that Barbados have not lifted a regional limited-overs Cup, Shield, Trophy, Bowl or whatever since 1988, Springer and his 14 players know that a drought of 14 years is too long for a nation which boasts of such a rich cricketing history. It will be an unprecedented 13th final for Barbados, who are seeking a fourth title, which is a huge difference to the 17 they hold in first-class championships. They return to Kaiser Sports Club on the scenic north coast of Jamaica, where they so narrowly failed to win the Bowl last year in a highly-competitive final against Guyana, with the knowledge that it is going to be no cake-walk in trying the overcome the fierce, unbeaten Jamaicans. But one man who feels that this is Barbados’ time is captain Courtney Browne. If we don’t win this year, I don’t know when we’ll win it again. That’s the honest truth. This is the best chance we’ve got of winning the Bowl.None of these Bajans would have been at Sabina Park when the Malcolm Marshall-led Barbados last won a regional limited-overs title in a heart-stopping final at Sabina Park nearly a decade-and-a-half ago.But those like Browne, Philo Wallace and Floyd Reifer would have been there when Barbados were emerging as runners-up in the 1992, 1994 and 1995. And all but Vasbert Drakes, Dwayne Smith, Antonio Mayers and the sidelined Wallace were at Kaiser last season when the final was lost to Guyana by six wickets and 19 balls.Having finally broken the 11-year, ten-match, non-winning streak against Guyana in Friday’s semifinal, Barbados must feel they are on their way to claiming another piece of elusive material.Everything is in place. The first thing that we had to do was get to the final and we are there. It’s just a matter of sticking to the team plan and coming out and working hard as a unit, Browne said. After such a monumental achievement against Carl Hooper’s men, Barbados are bound to be on top of the world but they will not allow themselves to become complacent against opponents who have been the only ones to beat them thus far in the competition.Jamaica beat us in the preliminaries, so I don’t think there will be any room for complacency, Springer said. We’ve just got to come, work really hard and go one step up from the performances and we should come out on top.It was a comment mirrored by Browne. You are playing in Jamaica against Jamaica and everybody is going to be backing Jamaica. There is no time for complacency, Browne said.Barbados are also almost certain to retain the same 11 in light of Dale Richards’ knee injury. Unquestionably the most devastating batting team in the competition, they have passed 280 four times, including that remarkable final-round preliminary match when their 287 for seven in 47 overs was still 20 short of Jamaica’s 308 for five in 50 overs. We are lucky in the respect that we have played against Jamaica before, Springer said. We’ve seen how they perform. We can look at the form sheet of the guys who are playing, whereas with Guyana we just had to look at the scores from a distance. With Jamaica, it may be a lot easier to plan for them, but the execution will be the important link.Jamaica have beaten everyone they have faced and three of their matches have even ended just after 3 p.m. with the semifinal win against Trinidad and Tobago also finishing well inside the distance. As they seek their first title since 1999, they can expect the support of a packed ground of about 6 000 fans. The Jamaicans will be very challenging, Browne said. They are a very young and energetic team. They have a good attitude towards the game. For us to beat Jamaica, our attitude has got to be right and spot on.
