Sheffield Wednesday: Huddersfield sign Tom Lees

Out of contract Sheffield Wednesday ace Tom Lees has completed a move to Sky Bet Championship outfit Huddersfield Town on a two-year contract [Yorkshire Post].

The Lowdown: Sheffield Wednesday gear up for life in Sky Bet League One

Looking to cultivate a squad capable of challenging for Sky Bet League One promotion this campaign, Owls manager Darren Moore will be doing everything possible to acquire high-profile talent to make this a reality.

Despite this, moving on spare parts will take equal precedence for the 47-year-old boss.

Now, another player has officially chosen his next move upon leaving Wednesday.

The Latest: Lees completes move to Huddersfield Town

After seven years with Sheffield Wednesday, Lees has made the move to West Yorkshire to join Huddersfield Town [Yorkshire Post].

Citing his experience, he has been brought in to help stem the flow of defensive exits at the Terries following the departures of Christopher Schindler, Richard Keogh, Tommy Elphick and Richard Stearman.

He has penned a two-year deal, however there is an option for a further year included within the agreement.

The Verdict: Right time for player and club to part ways

Enduring a large turnover of player this window, it was probably the right decision for the Sheffield club to part ways with the 30-year-old.

In 2020/21, the Warwick-born defender was ever-present for his former employers, registering two goal contributions in 39 appearances; one goal and one assist [Transfermarkt].

Furthermore, the Englishman was immense in his awareness to clear danger, managing to record an average of 5.4 clearances per 90 minutes across the piece [WhoScored].

Once labelled as ‘excellent’ by his former manager Garry Monk, Sheffield Wednesday should use his freed up wages to bring in a suitable replacement [Sheffield Wednesday FC Official].

A disciplined performance with the ball, followed by a counterattacking blitz from Yusuf Pathan, sealed a six-wicket win at Eden Gardens for the Rajasthan Royals who, with 18 points from 11 matches, become the first team to seal a spot in the semi-finals. At the toss, Shane Warne had said his intention was to knock out the Kolkata Knight Riders and the loss leaves the home side nearly out of the running for a semi-final place.Rajasthan were on top for most of the game, barring a spell in the chase when wickets fell in a flurry. Warne decided to stick with his tried-and-tested policy of fielding first, with the pitch offering assistance to the bowlers. They kept Kolkata on a leash, and a regular stream of wickets ensured the home side could manage only 147.Kolkata stayed in the hunt by picking up four wickets, which included a double-wicket maiden from Umar Gul. Warne’s experiment to send in Sohail Tanvir at No. 3 didn’t come off and Saha’s acrobatic one-handed take to get rid of Graeme Smith continued the fightback. Watson seemed to be in the mood when he deftly nudged Sourav Ganguly past short third man but he was soon to be bowled trying to heave an inswinger across the line. But Kolkata were left clueless against what came next. Enter Yusuf Pathan, whose hand-eye coordination and powerful strokes quickly took the game away. Gul had troubled the batsmen but Yusuf wasn’t to be daunted. He steered a full toss past midwicket, though he was lucky an inside-edge the next ball missed the stumps.

He then took a liking to Ganguly, and the whole of Kolkata was silenced as the local hero was carted for huge sixes in the midwicket region off consecutive deliveries. Runs came at ease as Kolkata’s bowlers and fielders failed to break the partnership.Kaif, who had been dominated by his partner, took a hat-trick of fours off Ashok Dinda, in a phase where he showed his ability to clear the infield. With Yusuf blazing away at the other end, Kaif didn’t have to take any risks. He placed the ball around for the singles and twos, and Kolkata were guilty of failing to effect the run-out chances offered to them.Yusuf, fittingly, sealed the game in the 17th over from Gul: the first ball was lofted over extra cover, the next through midwicket, and he signed off by sending the ball sailing over square leg for six. He has the fastest fifty in the tournament, off 21 balls, and his 48 off 18 today was just one hit away from breaking that mark.It required only one good partnership to overhaul the modest total, one which had been set up by accurate bowling and shrewd captaincy. Warne made innovative bowling changes, trying to unsettle the batsmen by rotating his fast bowlers for each of the first six overs. For their part, the faster bowlers varied their deliveries, changing their length and pace to keep the batsmen on their toes. Tanvir, Munaf Patel and Shane Watson kept the batsmen in check during the Powerplay, conceding just 32. Munaf bowled a maiden first up, snapping Mohammad Hafeez.Salman Butt, fresh from his 73 against Chennai Super Kings, attempted to give the innings a push by striking a few fours, including a superb cover drive on one knee off Munaf – before falling leg before as he moved across his stumps. Ganguly, though, struggled for fluency: he needed seven balls to get off the mark and scored his first boundary to third man just when Warne played mind games by bringing the fielder in the 30-yard circle. The battle between the two captains continued when Warne brought himself on. Warne had conceded only one off his first over but Ganguly broke the shackles by launching Warne over square leg in his second. The regular loss of wickets from then on hampered Kolkata. A frustrated David Hussey was bowled as he tried to charge Yusuf, while Ganguly later hit Siddharth Trivedi straight into the hands of long-on. However, Kolkata did well to go from 59 for 2 after ten overs to 147 in 20, largely due to Debabrata Das’s sparkling 31 off 20 balls. He announced his arrival with a dead-straight six off Warne, and later dispatched Pathan over midwicket. Laxmi Ratan Shukla and the batsmen to follow also chipped in quick runs, and despite Kolkata losing wickets regularly, the big hits helped them reach close to 150. It appeared challenging until Yusuf began his mighty blast.

Vaughan joins in as Kolpak debate rages

The row over the number of Kolpak players in English cricket rumbles on

Michael Vaughan: ‘If they’re not quality they’re not adding to the standard’ © Getty Images
The row over the number of Kolpak players in English cricket rumbles on.On Wednesday, Michael Vaughan waded into the debate. “I’m slightly concerned about it,” he admitted. “There are a number which have obviously taken over a couple of the teams. Looking around the whole circuit, there seem to be a few who aren’t doing that and that’s my biggest concern.”If they’re coming in and improving the standard, playing in the right fashion and training in the right fashion then it can only be a good thing but if they’re coming in and not doing that then that’s not so good. The one thing it does do is make sure you have to be good to get into that XI. If they are quality then it’s fine because they add to the standard, but if they’re not quality it’s like anything they’re not going to add to the standard.”And yesterday Mark Pettini, Essex’s captain, told Cricinfo it was a “nice feeling” to beat a Kolpak-heavy Leicestershire in the FP Trophy quarter-finals.”It was a shame for me to see Leicestershire fielding only four English-qualified players against us – it appears their emphasis is not on bringing through young English players,” he said. “They had a couple of decent young English batsmen in their squad last year in John Maunders and John Sadler but they’ve since left the club, to be replaced by non-qualified players. At Essex we do put the emphasis on bringing through our English-qualified players.”Leicestershire’s chief executive David Smith immediately hit back. “Was it not Graham Gooch and the mighty Essex who signed the two Kolpak Flower brothers Grant and Andy and then played them in their side along with two overseas players in Championship cricket? While their younger players were developing, that means they only had seven players on the field qualified to play for England during that period of time.”Essex are certainly much further advanced in their development programme than we are, but we do care about producing young English-qualified cricketers. Our development programme is in its infancy and we will be judged on my aim to have produced five players from our Academy playing regular first-class cricket for the club over the next four seasons.”Essex had two Kolpaks in their squad yesterday, Grant Flower and Ryan ten Doeschate, along with Danish Kaneria as an overseas player,” said Smith. In fact, ten Doeschate is not a Kolpak player, neither is Andy Flower.”I have a lot of respect for Essex as a club and their youth development programme, and their emphasis on bringing on young qualified England cricketers, but I would also point out that they have taken [Jason] Gallian from Nottinghamshire, [James] Middlebrook from Yorkshire, [David] Masters from Leicestershire, and [Alex] Tudor from Surrey to help balance the young and old and they are not all home-grown.”On the subject of Sadler and Maunders, the two England-qualified players that Pettini mentioned, Smith was equally forthright. Sadler joined Derbyshire where, in Smith’s opinion, “he has hardly set the world alight”, while Maunders was released last season because he was “not good enough”, and replaced by a 22-year Englishman, Matt Boyce, who has been with the county since the age of 11.”I would also point out,” said Smith, “that Leicestershire have recently produced what I would consider to be the best allround Test cricketer for England since Flintoff in Stuart Broad only to lose him to a Test-match county [Nottinghamshire] who could offer him more money.”Pettini’s comments come three days after Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s director of cricket and England selector, described the Kolpak situation as “serious” and called on the counties to take responsibility. The arguments will continue, but the ECB, which is powerless to act because of the current European Union legislation, is hopeful that the situation might be about to change. It is believed that the EU may rule that the Cotonou Treaty, which provides the Kolpak loophole, should no longer entitle migrant workers from the countries affected to freedom of movement within the Community. While those on existing contracts will not be affected, the flood of players, mainly from South Africa, could as a result become a trickle.

West Brom interested in Tom Lawrence

West Bromwich Albion are interested in a deal to bring Tom Lawrence to The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Mail, who claim that, with Matheus Pereira looking set to leave the Championship side in the near future, Valerien Ismael is beginning to make plans for life after the Brazilian.

And, the report goes on to state that the Derby County midfielder is high on the 45-year-old’s list of transfer targets should Pereira indeed go on to seal a move away from The Hawthorns this summer.

It is also reported that, with the Rams being in the midst of something of a financial crisis, Wayne Rooney’s side are willing to listen to offers for any of their players, while Lawrence himself is believed to be interested in taking on a new challenge.

Bye-bye Pereira

While losing the services of Pereira will undoubtedly come as a blow for many West Brom fans, the winger’s natural positioning and style of play do not overly conform with Ismael’s favoured 3-4-3 formation – which often looks more like a 3-4-2-1 – nor the manager’s more vertical brand of football.

Indeed, in the Frenchman’s 3-4-3/3-4-2-1, the wing-backs are crucial to the progression of the ball, while the wide attacking players often drop into the spaces behind the number nine, in order to free up room for the high-pressing defenders.

So, the two attacking players other than the centre-forward spend the majority of their time operating almost like a double 10, although, they will also be required to play out wide when it is necessary.

As such, the £27k-per-week Lawrence would appear to be something of a perfect fit for this system, as the forward’s versatility can see him comfortably operate from the left, centre or right-hand side of a front three, in addition to the fact he is an undeniably gifted footballer.

Indeed, despite Derby’s struggles last season, the £3.2m-rated man nevertheless impressed over his 23 Championship appearances, scoring three goals, providing two assists and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.2 shots and making 0.8 key passes per fixture.

These returns see the man Steve Evans dubbed  “unplayable” earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.88, ranking him as Rooney’s joint sixth-best performer in the second tier of English football.

As such, should the sale of Pereira indeed go through this summer, it would appear highly advisable for Ismael to spend a chunk of the cash raised on the signing of the 27-year-old, as Lawrence very much appears to have the ability as well as the tactical capacity that could see him play a key role in helping Albion secure an immediate return to the Premier League next season.

Pundit says Harvey Elliott will get chances at Liverpool

Paul Stewart believes that Harvey Elliott could be developed in a similar way to Phil Foden was at Manchester City.

The 18-year-old has made just nine senior appearances for Liverpool but has impressed massively during pre-season and is expected to get his opportunities under Jurgen Klopp.

Elliott, who exceeded expectations during an outstanding loan spell at Blackburn last season, lined up alongside Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah in the Reds’ friendly against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday which could suggest that the teenager could be handed his full league debut at Norwich this weekend.

But Elliott only turned 18 in April and is one of the most inexperienced players in the league, with most of his chances likely to come in Europe and the domestic cups, like Foden.

The Manchester City man, who’s three years Elliott’s senior, had two years where he was restricted to mainly appearances off the bench and outings in the cups before he became a regular part of Pep Guardiola’s side.

And Stewart exclusively told Football FanCast that he expects similar treatment for Elliott:

“It’s difficult when you’re trying to replace such a notorious front-three, and what I mean by that is when you’re a young lad, it’s quite a bit of weight on your shoulders.

“But I think Jurgen is astute enough to give game-time as Pep did with Phil Foden, nurture him and see where it takes him.

“I think it’s a little too soon to expect too much out of him, but I see him being a player for Liverpool for a long time.”
