Watson could open in Tests – Nielsen

Shane Watson’s best chance of a Test recall would be to make another push to open and eventually succeed Matthew Hayden, according to Australia’s coach Tim Nielsen

Shane Watson’s best chance of a Test recall would be to make another push to open and eventually succeed Matthew Hayden, according to Australia’s coach Tim Nielsen. Watson scored his first one-day international century against West Indies on Sunday and the innings means that when Hayden returns from his achilles tendon injury, Watson is likely to join him coming in first. After his 126 guided Australia to a comfortable win, Watson spoke of his desire to fight back into the Test side, where he has not been seen since making the last of his three appearances in November 2005. Nielsen believes Watson can make a case to open at the highest level and could be a genuine option whenever Hayden, 36, retires.”I don’t think it can hurt, the fact that he is opening in one-day cricket,” Nielsen told AAP. “We’ve seen a lot of guys come through the system opening in one-day cricket and then getting an opportunity at Test match cricket. So if he can show that he’s got the ability to cope with the quality bowlers with the new ball in one-day cricket over the next 12 months, whenever the opportunity arises, his hat will certainly be in the ring.”However, Watson will need to lift his first-class output to make the transition viable. He typically bats at No. 4 or 5 for Queensland and although he tried to prove himself as an opener when Justin Langer’s Test spot was up for grabs, Watson’s six performances coming in first for his state were dire: 0, 0, 0, 15, 13 and 0.He also has the problem of being behind Simon Katich in the pecking order after Katich burst back onto the Test scene in the Caribbean with back-to-back centuries opening while Hayden was injured. Whatever the case, Nielsen is pleased that Watson has enjoyed a six-month injury-free period after his latest hamstring problem.”Selectors have shown some real good strength to stick with him and offer him chances whenever they can, and I think over the long run that’s how you get players who can slot into any role,” Nielsen said. “He’s done that brilliantly this tour.”He adds a lot of flexibility to our group. Shane is somebody who is good enough to come in as a batsman, who can hold his own as a bowler and does a good job in the field. International teams get caught out a little bit by relying on bits-and-pieces allrounders, who are not good enough in either batting and bowling. Watto is actually a good player as either a bowler or a batsman.”

The squad also includes five newcomers in Xavier Doherty, Ryan Harris, Brett Geeves, George Bailey and Tim Paine.”The squad recognises the continued success of the one-day side and its outstanding efforts in the West Indies, together with the strong performance of our young emerging talent in the Ford Ranger Cup,” Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of Australia’s national selection panel, said.Offspinners Nathan Hauritz and Dan Cullen and legspinner Cameron White will stake their claim for the spinners’ spot in the final squad. “Closer to final selection a decision will be made on the make-up of the squad and whether a specialist spinner needs to be added to the final 15,” Hilditch said. Beau Casson, he said, missed out as he needed “more exposure” to the one-day format.Tasmania’s Ford Rangers Cup success last season means that they have provided four of the newcomers to the squad. Doherty, the left-arm spinner, and seamer Geeves were the among four bowlers who finished joint-highest on the wicket-takers’ list with 15 scalps. Paine, the wicketkeeper who has turned into a specialist batsman, contributed 261 runs at 37.38, while Bailey, despite his limited success – 258 runs at 25.80 – is marked as one for the future. The squad will be whittled down to a final 15 on or before the August 11 deadline.

Pundit rules out Gareth Bale returning to Tottenham - Exclusive

Dean Windass has virtually ruled out Gareth Bale returning to Tottenham for a third time.

The Welshman made a sensational return to north London on a season-long loan spell last summer after being forced out due to his toxic relationship Zinedine Zidane.

Bale hardly featured during the first half of the campaign, but his blistering goalscoring form from February onwards led to the possibility of a third return.

However, Zidane left Real Madrid and the end of last season and was replaced by Carlo Ancelotti, the man who signed Bale from Tottenham back in 2013, which appeared to end any possibility of the 32-year-old re-joining.

Bale was asked about his future by Sky Sports on the final day of the Premier League season, but revealed that his answer would cause chaos and said he would wait until after the Euro’s.

However, Bale hasn’t touched on his Madrid future since Wales were knocked out by Denmark in the last 16, although the fact he’s already featured in pre-season would suggest he’s remaining with the Spanish giants for the final year of his deal.

Windass exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“I think with Zidane leaving, that’ll be a relief for Gareth. He’s got a new manager, it’s a fresh slate. The only unhappiness was him and Zidane.

“He’s clearly happy living there, because he’s always dug his heels in, I can only see Gareth Bale staying another two years and then retiring. I can’t see him going back to Tottenham, not in a breath.”

Pundit praises Everton’s transfer business - Exclusive

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Everton striker Marcus Bent has praised Rafael Benitez’s transfer business.

Whilst the Toffees manager hasn’t been able to recruit the high-profile likes of James Rodriguez and Allan, like Carlo Ancelotti did 12 months ago, he’s still added three new faces to his current squad.

Free agents Andros Townsend and Asmir Begovic joined following their releases from Crystal Palace and Bournemouth respectively, whilst Demarai Gray made a swift return to the Premier League, just two years after he left to sign for Bayer Leverkusen.

Benitez doesn’t perhaps have the same attraction as his predecessor but is clearly looking into bringing in players with Premier League experience, with Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff and Harry Winks two other names who’ve been mentioned as potential incomings.

Those three additions, who all played at least 45 minutes at Manchester United on Sunday, will bolster Benitez’s squad, although they’re unlikely to make the difference in helping Everton bring European football back to Goodison Park.

However, Bent exclusively told Football FanCast that he’s on board with the business his former side have managed to complete, simply saying: “I think it’s smart business.”

Miller and Vaughan settle differences

Geoff Miller has had a meeting with Michael Vaughan to dispel differences over the selection of fast bowler Darren Pattinson for the second Test against South Africa

Geoff Miller, England’s chairman of selectors, has had a meeting with Michael Vaughan to dispel differences over the selection of the team for the second Test against South Africa. Vaughan, England’s captain, had earlier said that the inclusion of Darren Pattinson had unsettled the team.”We have analysed everything,” Miller said. “We have cleared the issues that supposedly were involved in the last Test. I’ve had a chat to Michael Vaughan and I sat down with the selectors and there are no more problems.”We are trying to make every decision on a sensible basis. We are responsible for selecting the side and people who know me well know there is a logic and a reason behind all the selections made.”Miller had stated before the meeting that he wanted to hear Vaughan’s side after Pattinson’s selection was made into a “massive issue by the media.”After Vaughan called Pattinson “a confused selection”, Miller defended the inclusion of the 29-year-old fast bowler who had played only 11 first-class matches prior to his Test debut. “We garner opinion by talking to umpires, county coaches and other players and then we go and monitor the players that those chats throw up,” Miller told the . “Once we’ve got a rounded picture, and if they’re the kind of player Peter and Michael are looking for, we’ll consider them for selection.”Pattinson’s presence in the XI meant England went in with only five specialist batsmen with wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose batting at No. 6. After the ten-wicket defeat to South Africa, Vaughan said: “The whole Friday morning (the first morning of the Test) unsettled the team. You change the team by two players, there are players playing out of position and you leave out a player like Paul Collingwood, who is a huge player in the side, of course it has an effect.”Vaughan also said the team spirit was lacking during the second Test. “We didn’t feel as much of a unit this week. I have a huge belief that we need to be a unit in Test cricket.”However, he defended Pattinson’s performance (match figures of 2 for 96) and was unhappy with the severe criticism the fast bowler faced. “He tried his guts out and bowled some good spells. I felt sorry for him. He’s not been in the set-up and didn’t know anyone. We didn’t know him, so it was difficult for him.”
