Duminy stars as South Africa hammer Kenya

South Africa have far sterner tests on the horizon – tests with and without a capital ‘t’ – but they avoided a potential season-opening howler by walloping their neighbours Kenya by 159 runs in the first of two ODIs in Bloemfontein

South Africa have far sterner tests on the horizon – tests with and without a capital ‘t’ – but they avoided a potential season-opening howler by walloping their neighbours Kenya by 159 runs in the first of two ODIs in Bloemfontein. There were contrasting fifties from JP Duminy and Jacques Kallis while Johan Botha chipped in with four economical wickets. The scoreline does an adequate job of summarising the vast gap between the two African nations; South Africa cruised past 300 without much trouble, before Kenya’s top order promised a little but delivered rather less. It is a sticky issue in Kenya cricket that South Africa, their nearest and dearest, aren’t quite as helpful as, say, the ECB are with Scotland and Ireland. Nevertheless, there was no mercy shown by a full-strength South Africa who outplayed Kenya from the outset. 2008 has not been a successful or happy year for Kenya, and it seems unlikely South Africa will lessen their determination for the second ODI on Sunday.Kenya have passed 300 three times in their history, against Bangladesh, Scotland and Bermuda, but their highest total against a top-flight nation remains the 265 for 5 they made against India a decade ago. There was little chance of rectifying that particular record today, and Kenya soon lost their young prodigy Seren Waters for 15. Alex Obanda misjudged a run to Justin Ontong – not quite in Jonty Rhodes’ class, but still damn quick – to send Maurice Ouma packing, and when Steve Tikolo was trapped in front, Kenya were already sinking at 95 for 4. Obanda briefly shone with 38, lifting Morne Morkel over midwicket for a vast six, before he was beaten by Duminy’s quicker ball.David Obuya did his best to shove Kenya past 150, poking singles into the gaps and even smacking Monde Zondeki for six over square-leg, but these were the dying embers of an innings that never truly caught fire. Botha’s immaculate line earned him the fine figures of 4 for 19 from 10 overs while Duminy showed his flexibility with 3 for 31.And it was Duminy who shone with the bat, too. Hashim Amla fell cheaply to the probing Peter Ongondo – always a reliable bowler even on decent surfaces – while Herschelle Gibbs scythed a muscular 45-ball 44. South Africa needed a big innings, however, it came from Kallis and Duminy. As ever, Duminy was brilliantly quick between the wickets though never afraid to dispatch the poor ball. Elijah Otieno offered him a short gift on his legs which was worked through midwicket; Hiren Varaiya was reverse-swept with power for four more and was later nudged around to fine leg to bring up Duminy’s fifty.Varaiya fought back impressively, however, to have Kallis caught low by Obanda for 71, ending his match-seizing partnership of 108 with Duminy. Still, at 211 for 4 and with the last 10-over blast remaining, South Africa were in an excellent position and as Duminy worked the ball into the gaps with ease, Kenya’s fielders began to tire. He finally fell, ten short of a hundred, attempting to lift Nehemiah Odhiambo over long-off.Mark Boucher capitalised on Duminy’s work with an exhilarating late-innings assault of 57 from 30, lifting three sixes. He got going with a flick over square-leg off Ongondo before an even bigger smite off Varaiya sailed over long-off. His third, an impetuous heave over midwicket, brought up his fifty from just 25 balls as South Africa scored 86 from their last ten. Their 336 for 7 was ample. The two sides meet again for the second ODI on Sunday in Kimberley.

'Claire has been a tremendous help' – Sarah Taylor

England’s Sarah Tayor has said she learnt much from team-mate Claire Taylor, ranked the No. 1 batsman in the new ICC rankings for women’s one-day cricket

England’s Sarah Tayor, the youngest player in the history of women’s cricket to score 1,000 one-day runs, has said she learnt much from team-mate Claire Taylor, ranked the No. 1 batsman in the new ICC rankings for women’s one-day cricket.”Personally the one thing I really learnt from her is to bat in gears. She is one of these players that writes messages on her arms to get her through an innings and she always used to write ‘gears’ on her arm,” said Sarah, 19. “At first I was a bit naïve to and I went out and played how I wanted and hoped it would pay off.”Learning from Claire and Charlotte Edwards, people who I always wanted to play with when I was younger as they are your idols, I understood what gears was, so you start in off in first gear and work your way through. She has been a tremendous help and always give me a few words of advice.”Sarah admitted making the No. 4 spot in the new ICC rankings, launched in Mumbai on Thursday, was a surprise. “It was only from an interview in a match this summer where somebody asked about the ICC rankings and somebody said that I would be involved in it that I had an idea that I would be anywhere close,” she said. “I had no idea I was going to be in the top five – I thought I would be somewhere near the bottom.”I was really shocked when I turned on the computer this morning. I will be checking it more often now. The competition is there now and if you know somebody is higher you want to try and beat them.”Sarah also hoped to reach the top spot at some point. “I just hope to continue the way I am playing and more records will be broken,” she said.England will train in Bangalore in November in preparation for the ICC Women’s World Cup in March. “If we can prove to people how hard we work and what a team we are, to say we are World Cup winners in Australia – that would be fantastic as well,” said Sarah.

Celtic: Sviatchenko set to stay at Midtjylland

Rumoured Celtic target and former defender Erik Sviatchenko is set to stay at FC Midtjylland this summer, The Daily Record report.

The Lowdown: Celtic links

The Hoops have brought in three centre-backs this summer in Carl Starfelt, Liam Scales and Osaze Urhoghide but were linked with a swoop for Sviatchenko back in June.

Reports then suggested Ange Postecoglou had Sviatchenko on a list of potential targets at Parkhead, with the 29-year-old having unfinished business in Glasgow.

However, any chance of a shock late swoop in the current window have diminished.

The Latest: £2m bid

The Daily Record posted an update on Sviatchenko on their live deadline day blog (31/08, 10:35).

They suggested that the centre-back is in the middle of a transfer stand-off, with Midtjylland turning down a £2m bid for his services.

Dinamo Zagreb are also keen on Sviatchenko, with Midtjylland sports director Svend Graversen having this to say on the defender:

“Erik will not be sold. We are insanely happy with him and he will stay here.”

The Verdict: A good summer

The Hoops, overall, have had a productive window and look set to come out with a profit.

As deadline day got underway, Celtic had spent just over £17m on nine signings and had brought in just under £17m on various exits.

Ryan Christie has left and Odsonne Edouard also looks set to bump up the departure accounts, while Georgios Giakoumakis has joined and Filipe Jota has also arrived on loan.

Postecoglou also wanted a centre-back on deadline day, but with the market ‘proving difficult’ for one, it doesn’t look like a defender will arrive, definitely not summer target Sviatchenko, anyway.

Hutton hails Rangers ace Robby McCrorie

Alan Hutton has sung the praises of Robby McCrorie after the 23-year-old impressed in goal for Glasgow Rangers recently.

The Lowdown: Clean sheets

McCrorie has started in the last two games for the Ibrox outfit against Alashkert in the second leg of their Europa League qualifier, and at home in the Old Firm derby last weekend.

In those matches, he managed to keep two clean sheets, with the 0-0 draw at Alashkert followed up by the 1-0 win against bitter rivals Celtic (Sofascore rating of 7.4, the fourth-highest of any player on the day.

The Latest: Hutton on McCrorie

Speaking to Football Insider, former Rangers right-back Hutton hailed McCrorie after his impressive performances, and even went as far as to suggest that Steven Gerrard may decide against sending him out on loan again. The 36-year-old said:

“Gerrard will be very impressed with him.

“I think it was a little bit sink or swim for him, it was just left up to him with the two other experienced goalkeepers missing.

“He’s been out on loan, he’s had that experience and that’s led to his first Rangers game.

“The Old Firm game is different to anything else, but he’s taken it all in his stride and I thought it was an excellent performance.

“He stepped up and made some decent saves, so overall he must be very happy with his performance.

“Gerrard, Gary McAllister and those guys must be seeing what kind of goalkeeper that he’s capable of being in the future.

“They know that he can step up and be trusted. I’m really happy for him.

“To be able to go out in those situations and make big saves is bound to make him a better goalkeeper.”

The Verdict: Keep

After being sent out on loan to Berwick Rangers, Morton, Queen of the South and Livingston throughout his Gers career so far (Transfermarkt), McCrorie has shown that he can now perform for his parent club.

With the seasoned pro of Allan McGregor as a role model, the 23-year-old should only benefit from watching the veteran stopper in training, hopefully getting more minutes on the pitch as the season progresses.

He should be kept at the club at all costs rather than farmed out on loan again, so long as he can continue putting in impressive displays for the first team.

In other news, Rangers may find it ‘difficult’ to keep this ace at Ibrox

240 would have been competitive – Sehwag

India’s batsmen once again made run-scoring look a simple business in the second ODI against England at Indore

India’s batsmen once again made run-scoring look a simple business in the second ODI against England in Indore, as Yuvraj Singh racked up his second hundred in consecutive games and Gautam Gambhir and Yusuf Pathan chipped in with brisk half-centuries. But after the match, Virender Sehwag – who opened the batting and was bowled fourth ball for 1 by Stuart Broad – said that their eventual total of 292 was more than 50 runs above par.Sehwag fell in the second over of the match, but later he sent a message out to the middle telling his opening partner, Gambhir, that 230 to 240 would be a competitive total. “The pitch was not easy to bat on, the ball was stopping before coming on to the bat,” Sehwag said. “But thanks to Gautam, Yuvraj and of course Yusuf, we crossed the 290-mark.”Sehwag and Yuvraj also shared seven wickets as England were bowled out for 238 and Sehwag said having part-time bowlers in the line-up gave India a lot of options. “If you have batting allrounders, who can roll their arms over, and especially on this kind of wicket, it really helps you.”Pathan, whose 29-ball 50 was instrumental in taking India past 250, said he was willing to bat anywhere in line-up and was not keen on being pigeon-holed as a Twenty20 specialist. Pathan opened for India in the final of the Twenty20 World Cup in 2007 and was part of the Rajasthan Royals’ successful campaign in the inaugural IPL earlier this year.Pathan said his half-century had given him a lot of confidence for the future matches, but added: “I have played more three-, four- and one-day matches in domestic cricket and not as many Twenty20 games. I think the perception that I’m only a Twenty20 player is wrong.”India didn’t have it all their own way in the course of the match, and at 29 for 3 in the eighth over, England had their best opportunity to dictate terms. But their ascendancy didn’t last, and India will now carry a 2-0 lead into the third of seven ODIs in Kanpur on Thursday.”Unlike at Rajkot the opening partnerships did not get off to a good beginning,” said Pathan. “But it cannot happen every day and the others too need to contribute and did so today. We knew it was not an easy wicket to bat on and anything could happen later and I wanted to score as many runs as possible to give our team a good total in the end.”
