Mills urges Declan Rice to leave West Ham

Former Premier League defender Danny Mills believes that Declan Rice will leave West Ham United soon in a double-your-money deal.

The Lowdown: Heavy interest

After becoming a key player for West Ham and one of the first names on Gareth Southgate’s England teamsheet, Rice has attracted plenty of interest from around the English top flight.

Chelsea (The Sun) and Manchester United (The Manchester Evening News) were both strongly linked with his services, but he has so far remained with the Irons.

The Latest: Mills suggests Rice will depart

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills has suggested that Rice will depart West Ham soon for a big offer. When asked for his verdict on the 22-year-old’s situation in east London, the former Leeds defender said:

“These players have stayed loyal for so long.

“But, at some point, when you’re talking about doubling their wages, possibly even more, challenging for league titles, challenging for trophies, playing in the Champions League it’s huge, absolutely huge.

“Why wouldn’t you start looking at those sorts of things? You only have a certain life span as a footballer.

“You get to the point where you think ‘It’s now or never’ and if you don’t take that opportunity it may never come around again.”

The Verdict: Only a matter of time

Rice has become a hugely important player for the Hammers. Across the last three seasons, he has missed just 10 Premier League games, and he appeared 32 times last term as the Irons qualified for the Europa League thanks to a sixth-placed finish (Transfermarkt).

However, given that the 22-year-old reportedly turned down a new contract to stay at the London Stadium (The Guardian), the club will be aware that he is likely to leave at some point. They are said to be open to offers of £90m, and if they were to get such a price for the midfielder, it is the kind of money they would be able to reinvest throughout the squad.

Instead of keeping him at the club against his will if Rice does indeed wish to leave, it is time that the Hammers made the right decision and let him go if he wants to move on.

In other news, West Ham want to sign this striker.

Crystal Palace struck gold over Dwight Gayle

For clubs like Crystal Palace, being effective in the transfer market is imperative to their future success, but the south London outfit’s endeavours haven’t always been that productive.

The likes of Mamadou Sakho and Christian Benteke have arrived for hefty fees without producing much on the pitch, but the club’s hierarchy have struck gold over a handful of deals in recent years.

One of Palace’s more fruitful purchases was undoubtedly Dwight Gayle. The striker joined the Eagles back in the summer of 2013 for £4.5m after enjoying an impressive surge up the football pyramid.

Gayle was in the Essex Senior League with Stansted until 2011 and was on loan at Bishop’s Stortford in 2011-12, but his outstanding displays certainly caught the eye.

Having scored 57 goals in the 2010/11 season for ninth-tier Stansted, Gayle got his first break in professional football after being snapped up by League Two outfit Dagenham & Redbridge.

However, he was immediately loaned out to Bishop’s Stortford in the Conference North, and the diminutive forward bagged a further 42 times in all competitions the following campaign.

Gayle signed a new contract with Dagenham upon his return to the club, yet he was shipped out on another loan to Peterborough United soon after, and the Posh snapped him up on a permanent deal just six months later.

And his meteoric rise wasn’t finished there. Peterborough were relegated from the Championship despite the now 31-year-old notching up 13 goals and six assists in 29 league appearances, prompting Palace to make their move.

“The chance came, and I had to grab it because I might not get another,” Gayle said upon his unveiling as a Palace player.

“To be playing in the Premier League from where I’ve come from is a big achievement really. I’m just really looking forward to it, and hopefully, I can take the opportunity with both hands and do well.”

But things didn’t quite go to plan for Gayle during his time at Selhurst Park. During his three-year spell with the capital club, he scored just 15 top-flight goals in 64 outings, ultimately leading to his return to the Championship with Newcastle United.

The Magpies paid £10.8m for his services in 2016, earning the Eagles a healthy profit, and that deal has looked better and better for Palace chairman Steve Parish ever since.

Gayle has failed to find the back of the net on a regular basis in the Premier League throughout his career, and as a result, his market value has plummeted to just £3.6m despite him still being in his prime years.

This shows Parish was right to release the Englishman when he did, banking a tidy fee for his services in the process.

Clark expected to play against Pakistan

Stuart Clark’s dash to South Africa has not resulted in an immediate return to international cricket but Ricky Ponting is confident that Clark will break into the side against Pakistan in the UAE. Ben Laughlin beat Clark for a place in the attack for the final ODI in Johannesburg but Clark has impressed his team-mates in the nets.He is making his comeback from an elbow injury that has kept him out of elite cricket since the end of the Test series against New Zealand in early December. However, Ponting faced Clark at training in Johannesburg this week and said all the signs had been positive.”I’m pretty sure he will get an opportunity to play some games over there,” Ponting told . “I faced a bit of him today in the nets and it just seemed like the same old Stuart Clark. It’s always a little bit difficult to judge things on net performances.”But his rhythm looked good, his action looked the same, and it’s nice to have him back around the group again. It’s nice to have a more experienced guy, someone who has a very good record at international level, back in our group. He seems to be coming along really well. All reports from the physical and training staff are that he’s going well and pulling up quite well.”Clark had intended to prove his fitness for the Ashes by taking up a county position with Kent. The surprise call-up into Australia’s limited-overs side after Brett Geeves was ruled out with a fractured foot has given him an earlier-than-expected path back into the national squad and Ponting said Clark was thrilled to once again be among his team-mates.”When you join the squad again you are usually full of beans,” Ponting said. “You usually are when you have three months off, sitting at home. This is an opportunity that he thought might not have come along.”Australia wrap up their one-day series in South Africa with a match in Johannesburg on Friday. From there they fly directly to the UAE for the limited-overs series against Pakistan, which begins in Dubai on Wednesday.

For the second time in two meetings between these teams, Kings XI Punjab batted first and scored 119, but unlike the game in Durban, there was no redemption in the field this time as Mumbai Indians swept to an eight-wicket win to move up to 11 points and fourth in the points table. The win was set up by Mumbai’s offspinners – Harbhajan Singh, JP Duminy and Ajinkya Rahane returned combined figures of 4 for 29 in nine overs to launch a stunning comeback. Dwayne Bravo ensured a hiccup-free run-chase with a magnificent unbeaten 70 in an innings full of expansive drives and pulls.Mahela Jayawardene’s absence due to a leg injury sustained during the previous game hit Punjab badly: not only did they miss his calm presence in the middle order, it also meant there were six left-handers in the top eight, since his replacement was Luke Pommersbach. That suited Sachin Tendulkar’s offspin theory perfectly, and Punjab didn’t help their cause with some reckless shot-making and brainless running between the wickets. After the first five overs, though, it seemed this match would be a run-fest just like the previous one of the day, when Ross Taylor’s heroics had lit up Centurion. Punjab rattled along to 50 off a mere 32 balls, with Sunny Sohal (43 off 23) plundering boundaries at will, either shuffling across his stumps to flick to leg, or giving himself room to carve sixes over point. Soon, though, Harbhajan came into the attack, beat Kumar Sangakkara with his first three deliveries, and from there Punjab had little to cheer as Tendulkar quickly latched on to the offspin theory.Coming in to bowl in the eighth over, Harbhajan immediately settled into a magnificent rhythm. Bowling from round the stumps to the left-handers, he flighted the ball, got it to drift in, and the spin away sharply. Sangakkara was clueless off the first three deliveries, and then lost that contest comprehensively when he played all over one from Harbhajan’s next over.Duminy was soon pressed into the attack, and he responded with two strikes in his second over, first getting Wilkin Mota to hoick one to Harbhajan, who juggled repeatedly before holding on, and Yuvraj Singh, who paid the price for hitting against the turn. The twin offspin success prompted Tendulkar to try Ajinkya Rahane, and that move paid off too, as Pommersbach played a rash head-in-the-air shot that typified Punjab’s approach. In between all the spin trouble, Punjab contributed to their own downfall with some extremely sloppy running between the wickets. Mota gave it away with one such effort, making no effort to get back into his crease when Tendulkar misfielded at midwicket. The bowlers had done much more than had been expected of them, and Bravo and Tendulkar ensured the run-chase would be a canter. Punjab nailed a couple of wickets – including that of Sanath Jayasuriya – to give them some initial hope, but Bravo, who survived a tough caught-and-bowled chance off Irfan Pathan early in his innings, ended the momentary high with a fearsome assault on Sreesanth which turned the momentum completely Mumbai’s way.Only 14 had come off the first four overs when Sreesanth came into the attack, and Bravo duly seized the opportunity, pulling him for four, straight-driving and flicking him over long-on for two glorious sixes, and then flicking through midwicket for another four as the over leaked 21.Tendulkar soon joined in the fun, dropping down to No.4 and playing himself back into form after a run of low scores. The spinners caused a few problems, but Bravo trusted his footwork, going down the pitch and striking Yuvraj for a straight six. Piyush Chawla spun a few past the bat, Brett Lee bowled a fiery spell and tested the batsmen with pace and bounce – Bravo copped one on the helmet late in his innings – but with such a paltry target before them, the batsmen were never under any pressure. Tendulkar carved a few slog-sweeps through and over midwicket, Bravo finished it off with a spanking pull shot, and Mumbai ended the evening feeling much better about their semi-final chances than they had when they began the match.
