Ashley Preece reveals Matty Cash boost for Villa

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has revealed a major injury boost for Aston Villa ahead of their Premier League game against Arsenal on Friday night.

What’s the story?

Dean Smith’s side slipped to an agonising late defeat against Wolves in the top-flight at the weekend, with Matty Cash one of the absentees from the match-day squad.

But now, during a Q&A for The Birmingham Mail, Preece has confirmed that the full-back should be all fine for the clash away at the Emirates later this week.

He said: “As someone has mentioned, expect Matty Cash to shake off a dead leg for Arsenal on Friday. Sanson back on the bench vs Wolves was a positive. It’s just Leon Bailey now with an update expected on Thursday via Smith’s presser.”

Dean Smith will be delighted

Speaking last season, former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips dubbed Cash as “sensational”, while adding: “Cash has come in and he has been flawless. He has taken to the club like a duck to water. You have to give credit to the player and the recruitment department. They have obviously done their homework. He has been one of their shining lights this season.”

Just a couple of weeks ago against Everton, the right-back finally got his first goal for the club, netting a thunderous strike off his weaker left foot in the 3-0 victory the Toffees at Villa Park.

The fact that he’s now being touted with an international call-up with Poland ahead of next year’s World Cup is a real statement on just how high his stock has risen, and full credit must be given to both him and Smith.

With Villa slipping to a disappointing defeat against Wolves, bouncing back with a positive result against Arsenal will be key, and Cash’s return is sure to have Smith buzzing.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa could have their own Raheem Sterling in this academy starlet…

Persistent Cape Town rains made sure that Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders didn’t get onto the park for their match. The rain was intermittent all day, and the umpires decided to call it off close to three hours after the scheduled start. Both teams will now share a point.Incidentally this is the third IPL game to be washed out without a ball being bowled. The first was at the Feroz Shah Kotla between the hosts Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata last May, and the second was between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians earlier this season.Chennai and Kolkata would have started the game level at two points, and they now have three points each, from four matches each.

– Nossa prioridade é a Libertadores.

Nuno eyeing his next Ruben Neves at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Joao Palhinha continues to impress clubs across Europe, so sporting director Fabio Paratici and co may need to strike in January…

What’s the word?

According to Portuguese newspaper Record (via Sport Witness), the 26-year-old’s performances for club, Sporting Lisbon, and country, Portugal, have alerted teams in Europe’s top divisions, particularly in England.

It’s thought that there are several teams interested in securing Palhinha’s signature in January, though it remains to be seen how much the Primeira Liga champions would want, having requested €40m (£36m) in the summer.

Spurs were reportedly keen on signing the nine-cap international just a few months ago but were only prepared to pay half the price at €20m (£18m).

Shades of Neves

Their interest should hardly come as a surprise with Nuno Santo at the helm as he was known for signing plenty of his fellow countryman during his time at Molineux.

In fact, the 47-year-old boss had his eyes on the 6 foot 3 midfielder whilst in charge of Wolves, so he’s certainly a player that he’d love to sign in north London.

And it’s easy to see why, as there are plenty of comparisons to be made to a similar type of player in Ruben Neves, who marshalled that Old Gold engine room frequently under Nuno.

The £18.9m-rated beast has been a standout performer for the Portuguese giants this campaign, ranking as their second-highest-rated player (7.40) thus far.

He has proven to be a major influence at either end of the pitch, not only delivering two goals in eight league appearances but also averaging a squad-high 3.8 tackles, on top of 1.4 shots and 1.1 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

By comparison, in the two Premier League campaigns before this one, Neves averaged at least 2.1 tackles and 1.6 shots per game, and found the net five times alone in 2020/21, which only goes to show the two players are in the same sort of mould.

It is why Nuno was originally eyeing Palhinha up as a direct replacement for this fellow Portugal international.

Described as a “special player” by current Sporting boss Ruben Amorim to MaisFutebol (via Manchester News Today) and “phenomenal” by Portuguese football expert Marino Peixoto, Palhinha would be an astute addition to Spurs’ current midfield.

However, they will need to act fast as he continues to impress teams across Europe. Paratici could well secure Nuno another Neves this winter.

Lee, Watson closer to fitness

Australia have not tasted success in a Twenty20 fixture for four months so any victory, even in a practice match against Bangladesh, will not be sneezed at

Australia have not tasted success in a Twenty20 fixture for four months so any victory, even in a practice match against Bangladesh, will not be sneezed at. But as encouraging as the batting segment of their 38-run win at Trent Bridge was, by far the more important development for Australia was the performance of Shane Watson and Brett Lee; a duo whose recovery from injury could go far to determining the tourists’ fortunes in World Twenty20 and Ashes campaigns this summer.Watson was again withheld from bowling duties, but remains hopeful of fulfilling his all-round ambitions in the World Twenty20 proper. His batting, however, was from the very top shelf and provided further evidence that, after several unconvincing auditions, Australia have found the limited-overs opener they have sought since the retirements of Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist.Watson continued his sparkling touch from the recent series against Pakistan, hitting firmly through the line en route to a brisk 52 off 23 deliveries. His 100-run opening stand with Brad Haddin provided Australia with the platform from which to post an intimidating 219 for 6 in what was comfortably their best Twenty20 performance of the year. With the back and groin injuries that have blighted his 2009 campaign seemingly behind him, Watson is hopeful of reaching full fitness in the next fortnight.”That’s the plan,” Watson said, when asked whether he would be available to bowl in Australia’s World Twenty20 opener against West Indies. “It’s just building up over this week to be right to go for the first game. It was great to be able to get out and have a run around today and continue that confidence building.”I’ve been very excited to be able to get back over here and be a part of the Twenty20 and the Ashes squad as well. It’s a really exciting time for myself and I’m really enjoying my time over here. To get a few runs in the first game is a nice little confidence booster.”Lee might not have possessed the clinical execution of Watson, but the veteran paceman will nonetheless be satisfied to have completed another incident-free outing. Foot and ankle surgeries in January have restricted Lee to just a handful of 20-over matches this year, and for a bowler who relies heavily on rhythm, each match represents another step in his quest to reclaim his mantle as Australia’s spearhead in all three forms.”Brett seems to me like he’s gradually starting to find his feet,” said Watson, who knows a thing or two about comebacks. “From my experience, it does take a little while for me getting back to full pace. It can take a month or so to gradually get your body used to doing what you want to do with it. Brett’s in that phase at the moment. He looks really strong and he’s hitting the crease really hard. His best is just around the corner.”It’s definitely coming along, there’s no doubt about that. I know from experience it’s difficult and it takes a bit of time. You feel like you’re pulling down extremely hard on the crease but it’s just not coming out as fast as you want. But in time, over a couple of weeks, everything feels like it’s in alignment and you’re ready to go. I’m sure that’s exactly where Brett is at the moment.”

Watts could be Saints’ next Ward-Prowse

In terms of those who can play in the central-midfield position, Southampton have a number of options including James Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu, Ibrahima Diallo, Will Smallbone and Stuart Armstrong in their senior squad.

However, the club has another young midfield player in their youth ranks that has every chance of breaking into the first-team set-up at some point in the near future and thus, could end up following the same path that Ward-Prowse has done after working his way through the youth system and making regular appearances at St Mary’s.

19-year-old midfielder Caleb Watts joined Southampton’s U18 side from Queens Park Rangers back in the 2018 summer transfer window for an undisclosed fee.

Since then, Watts, who is currently valued at £225k according to Transfermarkt, has made 26 appearances for Southampton’s U18 side, scoring one goal and providing two assists in the process.

Watts has also made 30 appearances for Southampton’s B team where he has managed to score two goals and provide two assists in the process.

Dubbed as “exceptional” by Australia’s National Technical Director Trevor Morgan, Watts has also made four senior appearances for Southampton, the first of which coming in their 2-0 FA Cup win over League One side Shrewsbury Town back in January.

As well as that, Watts also made three appearances for Southampton in the Premier League, coming on as a substitute against the likes of Arsenal, Everton and Manchester City.

So far this season, Watts has not been involved in any senior Southampton game but has made six appearances for their B team, bagging one goal and providing a solitary assist whilst swapping between playing as an attacking-midfielder and right-winger, showing his versatility at such a young age. That trait is directly comparable with Ward-Prowse.

Moving forward, even though he hasn’t had any involvement with the senior team as of yet this term, there’s still time for Hasenhuttl to add him to the squad to see if he is any closer to becoming a regular figure for the Saints.

Also, with the attacking prowess he’s shown so far this season, he could well be a good addition in the team next to Ward-Prowse who has proved himself to be a consistent goalscorer and assist provider during his time in the senior side.
