Scorecard
The bowlers had their say on a rain-hit second day at the Premadasa Stadium as Pakistan A regained control by reducing Sri Lanka A to 155 for 6. The Sri Lankans were on top early on when they inflicted a collapse to bowl out Pakistan for 342, but their batsmen lost the plot after a sound start.Pakistan failed to consolidate their strong overnight position of 293 for 4 when they lost their well-set pair of Faisal Iqbal and Fahad Iqbal in quick succession. Chaminda Vidanapathirana, the right-arm seamer, was the pick of the bowlers as he sent back Faisal, Sarfraz Ahmed and Fahad Masood. Like Ahmed Shehzad a day earlier, the captain Faisal too was unlucky to miss out on a century. Vidanapathirana finished with 3 for 43 in 20 overs. The home side were on the upswing when their openers began strongly with a stand of 79. Abdur Rehman broke the stand when he sent back Malinda Warnapura caught and bowled for 37, before Mohammad Talha sent back the other opener, Lahiru Thirimanne, shortly after reaching his half-century. An incisive spell by Wahab Riaz helped Pakistan claw back as the home side lost three wickets for as many runs. There was no recovery to speak of before rain brought an early end to the proceedings.

Lesão, família e fé: Após 11 meses, Luiz Felipe volta a começar um jogo

– Sempre me apeguei à minha família.

Rashid and Bopara in the runs

A round-up from the latest action in the County Championship

Cricinfo staff21-Aug-2009Division OneChris Read hit his fourth hundred of the season to give Nottinghamshire a fighting chance of saving their match against Hampshire although they are still set to follow-on on the final day Trent Bridge. The visitors were reeling on 48 for 4 at the start of play but the middle and lower order, led by Read, performed an impressive rearguard which lasted until the final ball of the day. Samit Patel and Bilal Shafayat offered early resistance until Patel was lbw for 35 and Shafayat edged behind for 64. When Ali Brown was trapped by Imran Tahir’s top-spinner, Nottinghamshire were still well behind but Read found some strong partners. Mark Ealham contributed 32, then Andre Adams helped Read add 97 for the ninth wicket. Read brought up maximum batting points with a six before David Griffiths lost his off stump at the end of the day.Adil Rashid continued his sparkling form with another career-best hundred as Yorkshire fought back magnificently against Lancashire to take control of the Roses clash at Headingley. The hosts lost just two wickets, building a lead of 110 going into the final day. The key stand came between Rashid, missed at slip on 13 by VVS Laxman, and Gerard Brophy as the pair added 168 in 49 overs – a Yorkshire record in Roses battles – to lift them from a dangerous 144 for 6. Brophy, also dropped at third man on 41, fell one short of his hundred when he edged Gary Keedy behind, but nothing stopped Rashid who passed three figures off 154 balls and was still going strong at the close. With him was Ajmal Shahzad and so far the pair have added 74 to follow their stand of 192 against Hampshire last week.Click here for the report on the third day’s play between Somerset and Sussex at Taunton where rain wiped out most of the action.Click here for John Ward’s report from Chester-le-Street as Durham claim another victory.

They were aided by a composed 42 from David Willey – who offered a tough return chance on 10 – but when he fell it needed the two bowlers to hold their nerve. Derbyshire’s final chance came when White was dropped high at second slip by Chris Rogers moments before the win was secured. Derbyshire added 21 to their overnight score and struck an early blow when Niall O’Brien was caught behind. Rob White attacked the run chase with 37 off 27 balls, but the home side kept chipping away. White was caught behind from an expansive drive and Alex Wakely, who made a more sedate 33, was bowled off the inside edge by Steffan Jones who soon bagged Rikki Wessels to leave Northamptonshire 137 for 5. The game appeared to swing decisively in Derbyshire’s way when a rapid Nantie Hayward removed Andrew Hall and Johan van der Wath in three balls as the allrounders edged into the slips. Willey, though, added 40 in nine overs with White to bring the target in view although there was plenty of tension – not helped by occasional showers – before victory was secured to move to third.Ravi Bopara answered his omission from the deciding Ashes Test with 201 as Essex gave themselves a great chance of victory against Surrey at Colchester. Bopara’s innings ensured Essex overcame injury problems after Mark Pettini was forced to retire hurt with a back spasm and Ryan ten Doeschate went off after a blow on the hand. Bopara reached his double from 292 balls but fell shortly afterwards when he drove to point having taken the total past 400. Tim Phillips played a valuable innings with 69 and the lower order all chipped in. Danish Kaneria, at No. 11, clubbed 31 off 21 balls then, handed the new ball, made two breakthroughs before the close to leave Surrey struggling on 6 for 2, still 111 behind.Leicestershire are poised for victory against Gloucestershire after another day where ball dominated Grace Road. The home side struggled to 133 in their second innings, but that still left a target of 364 and they’d stumbled to 133 for 5 by the close after losing two wickets in two balls late in the day. Chris Taylor was superbly run out by James Benning and next ball Claude Henderson bowled Kadeer Ali for a battling 48. Leicestershire almost failed to reach three figures when they sank to 95 for 5 with Hamish Marshall – who had never taken more than a single wicket in an innings – claiming a career-best 4 for 24, grabbing the first wicket of the day when Benning was caught at mid-off. A last-wicket stand of 38 provided some valuable breathing space and Rob Woodman fell early. Ali and Marshall added 58 before Wayne White struck and AJ Harris removed Alex Gidman. Then the double blow in the dying moments of the evening made a tall order seem enormous.2nd daySpin is playing a key role at Swansea as Glamorgan made Middlesex struggled in what is shaping as a low-scoring match. Robert Croft and Dean Cosker shared five wickets as the visitors struggled to 166 for 8. Sam Robson, the Australia-born opener, top-scored with 49 until edging to slip shortly after Eoin Morgan had been caught behind playing an expansive reverse sweep. Middlesex were soon 92 for 5 when Ben Scott was bowled off an inside edge against Croft, who then had Dawid Malan taken at slip. Shaun Udal did his best to stop the slide with an unbeaten 32, but a significant deficit is on the cards. Udal had earlier ended Glamorgan’s first innings to finish with 4 for 59.

Rafa Benitez must unleash Rhys Hughes

Everton’s season is in need of an injection of positivity following a poor run of results, and the emergence of a homegrown talent could be the ideal solution.

The Toffees have picked up just one point from a possible 12 in recent weeks as Rafa Benitez’s charges have struggled to cope with a lengthy list of absentees, increasing the pressure on the Spaniard.

A lack of goals following Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s enforced absence has been a constant source of frustration, but the solution could already be within the club.

Rhys Hughes has caught the eye over the last couple of campaigns for both the U18s and U23s, supplying the grateful strikers with a constant stream of quality crosses and through balls from out wide.

Since the start of 2019/20, the 20-year-old has bagged seven goals and provided a further 15 assists in 50 appearances for Everton, highlighting his top-class potential.

His eye-catching exploits for the youth teams led to Hughes signing his first professional contract in January 2020, before U23 manager David Unsworth lauded his technical ability.

“He’s got ability. What we’ve looked at is where do we play him,” said the tactician in a recent interview. “We felt playing off one of the sides, coming into the pockets, getting on the ball on the half-turn, was probably his best opportunity.”

However, Unsworth then suggested that the Wales U21 international needs to spend another 12 months in the youth setup to improve his physicality, although expressed his excitement at the potential of the dead-ball specialist.

“He has to get quicker, he has to get stronger, he has to develop physically, but this all happens naturally.

“He’s got the ability, he needs to build his stamina and his physicality but if you’re talking a footballer, he is an outstanding footballer with great technique and a great set-ball delivery. Those type of players are worth their weight in gold and after another year of development, we’ll see where we are with him.”

With Alex Iwobi still unable to discover his best form on Merseyside, the opportunity for Hughes to impress could be just around the corner, and his breakthrough may well be the catalyst Everton need to resurrect their faltering campaign.

Spurs: Vitor Oliveira transfer battle looms

Tottenham Hotspur are ‘ready’ to fight for the signature of Braga striker Vitor Oliveira, according to Calciomercato.

The lowdown

The youngster appears to be making his first team breakthrough at Braga, having featured in four of their last five league matches and earned his Europa League debut.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Last weekend, he emphatically made his case to be a regular going forward with a four-goal haul against Santa Clara in a 6-0 Taca de Portugal mauling.

The 21-year-old, who has three years left on his contract, is presently valued at just £450,000 by Transfermarkt.

The latest

According to Calciomercato, Oliveira’s form for Braga is said to have attracted the interest of ‘numerous foreign clubs’.

Spurs are among them, but so are their London rivals West Ham United, so the stage is set for the two capital clubs to do battle for his signature in 2022.

The verdict

Oliveira has also earned international recognition this month, making his Portugal under-21 debut in a European Championship qualifier against Cyprus.

The signs are that what looks like a modest price tag might about to be skyrocket after his flying start to the season, which has seen him hit seven goals in nine first team appearances for Braga.

However, one possible consideration for Spurs when buying young strikers is the impact on Dane Scarlett, whose path to the senior team could be blocked if Oliveira is signed. The Spurs starlet has plundered in 23 goals in as many matches for the under-18s, so you could question the need to look at emerging strikers elsewhere.

In other news, Conte has made this transfer request to Paratici.

Prior opts for rest instead of Champions League

Matt Prior will miss the Champions Twenty20 League in India after a decision between him, Sussex and the ECB to take a rest following an extensive period of international cricket. Prior is currently involved in the seven-match ODI series against Australia and then heads to Champions Trophy in South Africa. It was also confirmed that Kevin Pietersen will miss the tournament as he continues his recovery from surgery on his Achilles. After the Champions League, Prior will then play an integral part of England’s winter tour of South Africa which starts in November, so October is his only time for an extended break from the game, even though it means will miss the chance to make a name for himself on the subcontinent.”I’ve had a lot of talks with Matty about what is best for him,” Mark Robinson, the Sussex cricket manager, said. “He obviously is desperate to help his county do well in what is a major competition and he’s also aware of the other potential avenues that could be opened up by him doing well as an individual in India, such as the Indian Premier League.”When talking with him, the one thing that kept coming out was his desire to be as fit and as fresh to represent his country. As this was his only rest period, it was the right thing to do and we all at Sussex must respect Matt’s dream to continue his England ambitions.”Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket, said: “I’d like to thank Sussex for their continued support of the England team this season. We appreciate their understanding in making this decision.”However, Prior’s England team-mate Luke Wright is included in the squad and the tournament will provide him an opportunity to catch the eye of IPL franchises. Dwayne Smith, the former West Indies allrounder, is also available to Sussex after Deccan Chargers omitted him of their squad.”It’s such an exciting event for the club and the players,” Robinson said. “Everyone is looking forward to testing themselves against the best domestic teams in the world.”The ECB also declared that both Owais Shah and Paul Collingwood will be available to the Delhi Daredevils.
