Lee Johnson’s side will travel to the Emirates on Tuesday for a Carabao Cup quarter-final and will be backed by 5,200 away supporters following the sold-out allocation.

Sunderland are next in action on Monday, December 27 in a 12:30pm kick-off at the Keepmoat Stadium. The club revealed that every away ticket for the League One fixture has been sold, with Sunderland aiming to continue their six-match unbeaten run in the third tier.

Matt Merchant from Old Trafford has been named the 2009 Groundsman of the Year by the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB).Merchant’s efforts for Lancashire enabled him to fend off his rivals in the four-day category, with Mick Hunt of Lord’s picking up the runner-up prize. A commendation went to Andy Peirson (Canterbury) in the same category.”The work of all head groundsmen is highly valued and we are delighted to make these annual awards which recognise the head groundsmen who have prepared the best pitches this season,” Alan Fordham, head of operations for the ECB (First Class Cricket), said.It is a notable achievement for Merchant, given it is his first season in charge at the club after spending 19 years on the staff under the stewardship of the former head groundsman Peter Marron, who retired last year.”I’m obviously thrilled to have received this award in my first year in the position and it’s recognition for the hard work and long hours the entire groundstaff team put in over the winter months and during a very wet and trying summer,” Merchant said.”Old Trafford has an excellent reputation for delivering first-class wickets that provide something for both batsmen and bowlers. A good wicket is what you always set out to achieve and I believe the competitiveness of the wicket at Old Trafford is one of the main reasons why cricketers want to play at this famous ground.”Lancashire chief executive Jim Cumbes said: “We are all delighted for Matt and it is fantastic reward in his first season as head groundsman, succeeding Peter Marron who of course was one of the most respected in the business.”Peter Moores, Lancashire’s head coach, added: “Throughout the entire season Matt got the balance right between bat and ball. And in a season which was heavily affected by rain, the groundstaff worked tirelessly during fixtures to get as much cricket played as possible – something which was appreciated by all teams concerned.”Neil Godrich from Derby scooped the one-day award, beating off the challenges of Sean Williams of Bristol and Phil Frost of Taunton who shared the runner-up prize.Bill Gordon (The Oval), Paul Marshall (Northampton), Hunt (Lord’s), and Nigel Gray (Rose Bowl) were commended in the one-day category.John Moden at Fenner’s is the winner for pitches at MCC Universities with Richard Sula at The Parks runner-up. Ross Spry at Cheltenham was awarded the Outgrounds prize with Micky Stewart and Christian Dunkerley at Scarborough earning the runner-up award. All umpires rate the pitches at the end of each match and the winners of each category are those who achieve the highest average across the course of the season.

Dickie Bird criticises review system

Former umpire says the UDRS undermines the authority of on-field umpires

Dickie Bird says players should respect the decisions of the on-field umpires•Getty Images

Former umpire Dickie Bird has criticised the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS), saying it undermines the authority of on-field umpires. The system is currently being used in the Test series between Australia and West Indies, and New Zealand and Pakistan.”I would never have brought them in,” Bird told the . “They are taking the authority away from the on-field umpires, and the whole thing is causing more problems than it’s worth.”Bird’s comments come in the aftermath of umpire Mark Benson’s sudden withdrawal from the Adelaide Test between Australia and West Indies, and reports stating he was heading towards retirement out of frustration with the UDRS. The reported yesterday that Benson was upset over several incidents involving the UDRS on day one of the Test, one of which led to his original decision being overturned.”In the old days, controversial decisions became talking points in the bars and clubs but everybody respected the umpire’s authority,” Bird said. “I am in agreement with Roger Federer, who wanted Hawk-Eye thrown out of Wimbledon, and [FIFA president] Sepp Blatter, who says that refereeing decisions are part of football.”Players should accept these things and move on, but all the money that has come into sport has turned their heads.”Jeremy Lloyds, the English umpire, who stepped down from umpiring at the highest level in 2006, spoke of the strains involved, given the nature of the job, and the effects of decisions coming under scrutiny on television. “I was working 230 days a year, of which 150 were spent in airports or hotels,” he said. “The time you actually spend on the field, you feel that you’re in a goldfish bowl, and you can’t be yourself with the players in case it doesn’t look right on TV.”

Tottenham: Hugo Lloris talks underway

Tottenham Hotspur are in talks with Hugo Lloris over a new contract, according to Football Insider.

The lowdown

The 34-year-old’ current deal is due to expire at the end of the 2021/22 season.

The £8.1m-rated Frenchman has been with Spurs for nearly a decade, having joined from Lyon in 2012. He is closing in on 400 appearances for the club and has kept 132 clean sheets to date (via Transfermarkt).

Lloris has won the World Cup and the UEFA Nations League with France and helped Spurs to reach the 2018/19 Champions League final.

The latest

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that Lloris has ‘opened talks’ over a ‘long-term’ agreement, with the Frenchman hoping to remain with the north London club into his late 30s.

That’s because his family are settled in the area and he believes that ‘good times could be ahead’ under Antonio Conte.

Spurs, for their part, want him to put to pen paper and are reluctant to lose a player they perceive to be a key figure both on and off the pitch.

The verdict

Lloris is performing well this season, so you could argue there’s no real reason for Spurs to make a change between the sticks. Data from FBRef shows that he has the seventh-best shot-stopping record in the Premier League with 0.8 expected goals prevented, edging the likes of Alisson and Ederson.

What’s more, he produced ‘two massive saves’ in a display of ‘top class goalkeeping’ to help his country to win the Nations League in the autumn, as per a tweet from sports journalist Josh Bunting.

Given that Spurs clearly value his presence in the dressing room, who’s to say that he couldn’t transition to a player-coach role towards the end of any new contract? It certainly seems to be in the club’s best interests, both on and off the field, to keep him around for another while.

Rangers must land Ibrox deal for Olsen

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst is closing in on his first transfer window at Ibrox following his move to the club in November.

The January transfer window is just over a week away and with it comes heaps of speculation regarding players coming to and leaving Glasgow.

One player who could be on his way out is midfielder Ianis Hagi. It was recently reported that Galatasaray are set to have a meeting to discuss a potential swoop for the Romanian international, whilst Aston Villa have also been touted with an interest in his services.

Bye-bye Hagi

Rangers may well be waving bye-bye to Hagi if Galatasaray and Villa firm up their interest in the playmaker, but the Gers could sign a dream replacement in the form of Bologna’s Andreas Skov Olsen.

Italian outlet il Resto del Carlino recently claimed that Ross Wilson has made an enquiry to see if a deal is viable next month and the forward could solve a major problem for van Bronckhorst in terms of replacing Hagi should he leave Ibrox.

FFC published an article explaining why it could be beneficial for Rangers to sell the Romanian to kickstart a business model based around buying young talent and selling them on for profit. This would require the Gers to use a portion of their profits to sign prospects who could be worth more in the future and the signing of Olsen would tie in with this strategy.

The 21-year-old winger fits the profile of player the club should be looking at to continue to develop talents that they can sell on; young, experienced, potential, pedigree. He has already played 67 games in the Serie A and been capped 15 times by Norway at senior level, showing that he has been able to play regularly at the top despite his age.

Olsen has also shown promise with an impressive record in attack. He has scored 51 goals for his club sides and 19 for Norway at youth and senior level, meaning that he has 70 career strikes to date. In his last ten World Cup Qualifying outings for his country, he has averaged a superb WhoScored rating of 7.39 – with five goals and three assists to his name.

Consider those stats and his lethal left-foot, and it becomes clear to see why he models his game on Dutch legend Arjen Robben.

Therefore, the £5.85m-rated gem could be the perfect candidate to replace Hagi as his statistics suggest that he has the quality in the here-and-now to make an impact in the final third for Rangers to make up for the ex-Genk man’s exit.

Olsen also has the potential, given he is only 21, to improve further and be sold on for a profit further down the line, which could benefit the Gers in the short and long-term.

Angelo Mathews’ injury could take up to four weeks to heal•AFP

The injury crisis in the Sri Lankan camp has deepened, with the allrounder Angelo Mathews set to return home after straining his right quadricep muscle during the second ODI in Nagpur on Friday. The Sri Lanka Cricket media manager Brian Thomas has confirmed to Cricinfo that the Wayamba allrounder Thissara Perera will join the squad in India on Sunday for the three remaining ODIs.Mathews’ injury is likely to take up to four weeks to heal, thereby putting him in doubt for the tri-series in Bangladesh starting on January 4. He suffered the injury while setting off for a run during his match-winning unbeaten 37, but continued his innings with the aid of a runner (Chamara Kapugedera). The loss of Mathews is a big blow to the Sri Lankans, given his fine form with the bat. He made 99 in the third Test in Mumbai, very nearly guided his team home in a marathon chase of 415 in the first ODI in Rajkot – scoring a 33-ball 38 – and closed out the chase in another pressure situation in Nagpur, with Sri Lanka chasing 302.The Sri Lankans had already lost the services of two strike bowlers in Dilhara Fernando and Muttiah Muralitharan, who sustained finger injuries after the first ODI. Muthumudalige Pushpakumara and Suraj Randiv were flown in as replacements. In the post-match presentation in Nagpur, captain Kumar Sangakkara joked that at least 40 players were required as cover for injuries. Perera is yet to make his international debut.Prior to Sri Lanka’s arrival in India, the touring Australians too were jolted by several such pull-outs during the seven-match ODI series. However, the injury-ravaged tourists managed to win the series 4-2. The current ODI series is squared at 1-1 with the third ODI set to get underway on Monday.
