Crystal Palace predicted XI v Brighton

Crystal Palace travel a short distance to pay a visit to their arch-rivals Brighton and Hove Albion tonight on the south coast, with this being the first Premier League fixture for Patrick Vieira’s side since New Year’s Day.

The rivalry between the two clubs stems from the 1970s after a series of controversial clashes caused a feud between Brighton manager Alan Mullery and Eagles boss Terry Venables.

Current Palace manager Vieira will be hoping to take all three points from the game at the Amex Stadium and move above Leicester City into 10th ahead of the Premier League weekend.

The Frenchman confirmed in his press conference that he is without five senior players for the trip, with James McArthur still out following a hamstring injury from which the £55k-p/w star is yet to recover, despite hope that he would have made a speedier return.

Speaking ahead of the match, Vieira addressed the 32-year-old’s injury and timeframe on a possible return, saying: “There is still a long way to go. I think we’re talking about a couple of weeks.”

Wilfried Zaha, Jordan Ayew and Cheikhou Kouyate are all away with their national teams at the Africa Cup of Nations, while James Tomkins has sustained an injury and the club are waiting on more news as to how long he will be sidelined. However, Vieira is “hopeful” that 6 foot 3 first-choice goalkeeper Vicente Guaita will be available for tonight.

With that being said, we expect two changes to the line-up we saw against the win over Milwall in the FA Cup last weekend, and we think it will look like this…

Despite having only five appearances for Palace this season, we expect that Vieira will give Eberechi Eze the opportunity to remain in the starting line-up after an exemplary performance in the cup win over Milwall.

In terms of the two changes, we can see Jean-Philippe Mateta being swapped out for star striker Odsonne Edouard, who was rested in the cup clash at The Den.

The other change sees Guaita replace Jack Butland in the side, as the Spanish goalkeeper has recovered from a dislocated finger he sustained last month, which ruled him out against Milwall six days ago. The ex-Stoke netminder could have been facing the chop anyway after his goal-causing blunder in Bermondsey.

The rest of the side should stay the same, and Vieira will be hoping that Palace can pick up just their second away league win of the season. A repeat of last year’s 2-1 victory at the Amex wouldn’t go amiss.

In other news: Vieira was dealt this double blow ahead of tonight’s clash

Australia set to kick off New Zealand tour

Cricinfo’s preview to the first Twenty20 international between New Zealand and Australia in Wellington

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale25-Feb-2010Match FactsBrendon McCullum found some reasonable form against Bangladesh•Getty Images

Friday, February 26, Wellington
Start time 1900 (0600 GMT)The Big PictureAustralia often play international matches three days apart but rarely in two different countries. The last Twenty20 against West Indies in Sydney was followed by a quick flight across the ditch to Wellington for the first match on a month-long tour of New Zealand. They are coming off a home summer in which they did not lose a match in any format but New Zealand in their own conditions could be a tougher challenge. It is also Michael Clarke’s first tour officially in charge of Australia’s Twenty20 team – he captained them in England last year but only because Ricky Ponting was being rested.New Zealand have had a successful home summer as well, losing only one match so far, the second Test against Pakistan. They have played more Twenty20 internationals – 31 – than any other country but have not quite mastered the format, with 13 victories. These games are the last chance for both sides to prepare and ascertain their best line-ups before the ICC World Twenty20, which starts in the Caribbean in late April.Form guide (most recent first)New Zealand WLLWW

Watch out for…Brendon McCullum can be hit-and-miss but he found some form during the Bangladesh series and 56 off 27 balls in the Twenty20 was quite a performance. That was followed by 185 in the only Test and McCullum will be keen to continue that sort of touch against the Australians. His power at the top of the order will need to be a key part of New Zealand’s fight against Australia’s on-song attack.Shaun Tait’s return to international cricket, albeit only at Twenty20 level, was one of the individual success stories of Australia’s summer. He does not play first-class cricket anymore and prefers short, sharp spells to help him reach his best speeds, which peaked at 160.7kph against Pakistan in the Twenty20 in Melbourne. Most importantly, he has taken wickets and leaked few runs as his searing, swinging yorkers and shorter deliveries have proved hard to handle.Team newsNew Zealand have named a 12-man squad, which makes their selections relatively easy. Shane Bond is back in the group having missed the Bangladesh series and Tim Southee is the most likely to make way for Bond. The opener Peter Ingram made a promising start to his international career against Bangladesh but will face a tougher challenge against a fiercely quick Australian new-ball attack.New Zealand (possible) 1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Peter Ingram, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Jacob Oram, 6 Gareth Hopkins, 7 James Franklin, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Shane Bond, 11 Daryl Tuffey.Dirk Nannes was rested from the final Twenty20 against West Indies but expect him to return to form a very fast opening combination with Shaun Tait. Ryan Harris could be squeezed out despite making a good debut on Tuesday, or the selectors might decide to give Mitchell Johnson a rest. Daniel Christian also picked up two wickets on debut and although both were caught in the deep, he may hold on to his spot at No. 7. Michael Hussey replace Shaun Marsh in the squad but is unlikely to be in Australia’s strongest XI, given that he was overlooked for the three Twenty20s at home.Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 David Warner, 3 Michael Clarke (capt), 4 David Hussey, 5 Cameron White, 6 Brad Haddin (wk), 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Steven Smith, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Dirk Nannes, 11 Shaun Tait.Pitch and conditionsTwenty20 internationals at Westpac Stadium have tended to produce scores around 150-160. The forecast for Friday in Wellington is fine with a top temperature of 19C.Stats and trivia New Zealand and Australia have played three Twenty20 internationals against each other – Australia have won them all It is five years since these same teams played the first ever Twenty20 international – of the 22 players involved in that match only Brendon McCullum, Daryl Tuffey, Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey are in the mix to play this game Brendon McCullum has played more Twenty20 internationals than any other player in the world and has also scored the most runsQuotes”They’ve played bloody well, they’ve had a relatively easy run I suppose, in terms of the pressure they’ve been put under so hopefully we can put them under some huge pressure.”
Shane Bond is keen to test Australia more than Pakistan and West Indies did”We’ve had a pretty good run and I’m not sure who they have been playing lately but they’d want to front up pretty well then, wouldn’t they.”
Australia’s coach Tim Nielsen isn’t convinced that New Zealand have had it any harder, facing Bangladesh

Reddy ton takes Hyderabad to semi-final

A round-up of the quarter-final matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy that took place on March 13

Cricinfo staff13-Mar-2010
Scorecard
Akshath Reddy, in his first Twenty20 game, smashed an unbeaten 105, including ten fours and five sixes, to lead Hyderabad into the semi-final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy after they beat Mumbai by seven wickets. Mumbai, thanks to an unbeaten 89 from Siddharth Chitnis and a 24-ball 46 from Paul Valthaty, had posted a formidable 181. Chitnis, who faced just 36 balls, was ruthless in his knock, striking 10 sixes and four fours. But Reddy’s reply was just as unforgiving, and he was well backed up by opener Danny Prince and Anoop Pai who chipped in with useful contributions to help ensure Hyderabad scaled down their target with little difficulty.
Scorecard
Maharashtra marched into the semi-finals with a comprehensive victory, easing past the finish line with six wickets and four overs to spare. It was the bowlers who set up the win, taking four wickets for 19 runs in the middle of the innings to derail Madhya Pradesh, who had moved along to 54 for 2 by the 10th over. Left-arm spinner Kiran Adhav was the most successful of the Maharashtra bowlers, finishing with 3 for 29, as MP folded for 120. There was hardly any trouble during the chase, with the openers slamming 56 by the seventh over. Offspinner Jalaj Saxena sent down a tight spell, conceding only 17 runs and taking a wicket, but the target was too flimsy for MP to defend.

Tottenham Hotspur: AC Milan hold talks with Japhet Tanganga

According to a report by Calciomercato (via Sport Witness), AC Milan’s Frederic Massara and Paolo Maldini held talks with Japhet Tanganga’s representatives two weeks ago, ahead of a proposed ‘loan with a right of redemption’ transfer.

The Lowdown: Lack of first-team football

Since the arrival of Antonio Conte at N17, a variety of formulations have been utilised for Spurs’ backline. This has made it difficult for players to secure themselves a guaranteed position in the starting 11. This has been the case for Tanganga, who has made just four appearances in the Premier League under the Italian boss, having been used as a central defender and at right-back.

In the League Cup, Tanganga has averaged the most amount of blocks made per game in the squad, earning himself a place in the starting lineup for last week’s clash with Chelsea in the EFL Cup semi-final.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, he struggled against the Blues, with some reports calling his display a ‘calamity’, and it is perhaps no surprise to see the player linked with a move away in the January window.

The Latest: Milan hold talks with Tanganga

According to a report by Calciomercato (as relayed by Sport Witness), Milan chiefs Massara and Maldini held talks with Tanganga’s representatives two weeks ago, ahead of a proposed transfer to the Serie A side.

Milan are said to be looking for a ‘loan with a right of redemption’, which presumably would entail the permanent move going through in the summer.

However, it is clear that if a deal were to be agreed, Tottenham would prefer a permanent transfer during the January window.

It is reported that Spurs value the defender at £16.7 million, which Milan believes to be too high a fee. Therefore, talks have stagnated, but it is believed that a deal could come to life towards the end of the window.

The Verdict: A good move for the youngster

With guaranteed game-time an uncertainty at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a move away in search of regular first-team football could be the best course of action for Tanganga.

The central defender could follow in the footsteps of Fikayo Tomori, who joined Milan in a deal worth £25 million. Since arriving in the Serie A, Tomori has been impressive, playing his way back into Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Tanganga has also received similar praise, from both fans and professionals, with Gary Neville having asserted that he is a ‘really special’ player, and former manager Jose Mourinho regularly describing some of his performances as ‘amazing’.

Therefore, this suggests a move abroad could prove to be the best option for the youngster’s long-term playing career.

Rui Costa recusa proposta do Santos; Peres quer Diego Cerri, do Bahia

-A base é coroa do rei.

Somerset have signed Australian paceman Damien Wright to replace Murali Kartik for the first month of the season while Kartick is involved with the Indian Premier League.Wright, 34, has had county experience with Northamptonshire and Glamorgan, and also played for Scotland in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy in 2002. He’s played state cricket in Australia for both Tasmania and Victoria, where he’s had good success this winter. In total Wright has had 103 first-class outings, collecting 335 wickets at an average of 28.72 and also taken 122 one-day wickets at 29.51 runs. He also has a useful first-class record with the bat, making 3,264 runs at an average of 24.35.Brian Rose, Sopmerset’s director of cricket, thinks Wright’s experience is perfect for his stand-in role in early part of the season. “He nearly became my first signing as director of cricket at Somerset and I have always rated him as a fine player. Damien is the sort of bowler who you want if you are looking to fill a gap for four weeks, because he is experienced, he has been there and is performing well,” Rose told Western Morning News.”He will be able to walk in and take on board the conditions that he will face in England early season because he has experienced that during his time at Northamptonshire. He is highly regarded by Cameron White for example and the rest of the Victorian Bushrangers team and is a very skilful opening bowler.”Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick said: “We have made no secret of the fact that we were looking to sign a quick bowler for the opening few matches and Damien Wright is a good performer so I am delighted to have him joining us. I have met him on numerous occasions and got to know him pretty well and several of the other guys at the club also know him so he will fit in well in the changing room and will do well for us out on the pitch.”

Midlands source makes Traore to Spurs claim

As per Midlands source Birmingham Live, there has been an update on Wolverhampton Wanderers’ stance on selling top Tottenham Hotspur target Adama Traore.

The Lowdown: Tottenham in talks…

Reliable reports indicate that Spurs and manager Antonio Conte are continuing their pursuit of the Spain international long into this window as the Italian earmarks Traore for a specialised role.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Spurs’ head coach intends to utilise the 25-year-old as a makeshift right-wing-back for his system amid concerns over current duo Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal (The Athletic).

Calciomercato most recently claimed that the club, and by extension transfer chief Fabio Paratici, are readying a ‘concrete offer’ for Traore after Conte’s recent meeting with him and chairman Daniel Levy.

The Latest: Midlands source shares update…

As per Birmingham Live, Wolves’ stance over a sale is crystal clear despite recent claims that Spurs would prefer a loan with the obligation to buy.

The Molineux outfit are apparently demanding in excess of £25 million for Traore, but club owner will ‘reluctantly listen to offers’ for his winger.

This comes as Tottenham continue their push and come as the side ‘most hotly pursuing’ his signature ‘under the orders’ of Conte.

The Verdict: Pay the money?

Given Traore’s contract situation, with his current deal set to expire in 18 months as things stand, Spurs could theoretically haggle the £25m fee down given Wolves’ weakened position in negotiations.

They have just two more windows after this January to sell for a reasonable fee and you could argue they lose leverage in each passing one.

However, from a Spurs point of view, they’re yet to confirm a major signing with just 11 days of the window remaining and Paratici may be running out of time to seal Traore’s move before the deadline.

In terms of ability, there is little arguing he would greatly strengthen Conte’s options, with the Spaniard averaging more dribbles per 90 (4.3) than any Lilywhites player in the Premier League this season (WhoScored).

Called a ‘big name’ player by Wanderers correspondent Tim Spiers of The Athletic, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds and whether Spurs can finally seal his move.

In other news: Spurs edge closer to first January signing as Conte now personally eyes ‘massive’ £15m man, find out more here.
