Mitchell ruled out of second South Africa Test and Australia T20Is

The top-order batter has been carrying a long-term foot injury and will now aim to be fit for the Australia Test series

Stead: Williamson unlikely for Australia T20Is, Boult is available

Daryl Mitchell has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa and the T20I series against Australia in an attempt to recover from a long-standing foot injury.Mitchell, who averages 53.46 in Tests, has been carrying the problem for around six or seven months and was rested from the final T20I against Pakistan in January, but it has been decided he needs a longer period on the sidelines to give himself the best chance of being fit for the two-Test series against Australia.Related

Santner goes 'the other way' to rediscover his Test bowling

“We took the opportunity to rest him a little earlier but after seeking medical advice on this as well it’s likely that he needs a longer period of time,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said. “It’s really tough, because there’s not a lot breaks coming up in the next wee while so thought this gives us nearly three weeks to try and give him the chance of the best recuperation from it.”There’s no guarantees this will still work in that period of time but we are very hopeful that it will improve his chances of getting through a longer stint with us.”New Zealand have not called up a replacement for Mitchell with Will Young the spare batter in the squad and he could come in as a like-for-like swap. However, there remains a chance the side may be rebalanced with Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner moving up the order and another pace bowler brought in with Stead confirming the uncapped Will O’Rourke remained in contention for a debut.”[Will Young] is definitely one of the options,” Stead said. “Will’s there as back up [and] Glenn Phillips has shown he’s more than useful and it could be shaped differently. We are very happy with the squad we have. Daryl’s obviously a huge loss, though, he’s been instrumental in a number of outstanding batting performances but it’s important for him and us that we get this right long term.”Meanwhile, Kane Williamson is unlikely to be available for the T20Is against Australia – a format where he is captain – as his wife is expecting their third child. However, Trent Boult could come into consideration for those matches with the left-arm quick not having any franchise commitments at that time.”Trent’s available if we want to select him,” Stead said. “Him and I are still having conversations…hopefully in the next couple of days to nail down what that looks like.”

Sandhu, Richardson unlikely heroes as Queensland ambush New South Wales

AAP09-Oct-2023

Kane Richardson celebrates hitting the winning runs•Getty Images

Queensland pacemen Gurinder Sandhu and Kane Richardson combined for the largest tenth-wicket partnership in Marsh Cup history and hoisted the Bulls to a stunning one-wicket defeat of New South Wales. The home side posted only 217 at the usually batter-friendly North Sydney Oval on Monday but looked on track to defend the total courtesy of allrounder Jack Edwards and debutant Jack Nisbet.Sam Heazlett had been the pick of the Bulls’ batters on Monday but when he edged Chris Green to Edwards at point, the visitors looked out of the contest at 146 for 9.Sandhu and Richardson were Queensland’s last hopes, and while both are competent with the willow, neither could be said to be a true allrounder. But the Queensland quicks struck up a 73-run partnership that yielded 12 boundaries and eclipsed the competition’s previous best 10th-wicket stand of 61.Sandhu was particularly influential, hitting Nisbet for back-to-back fours in the 31st over, while Richardson smacked the debutant over long on for a rare six two overs later. When Sandhu hit the ball straight down the ground from Edwards’ bowling, the target required was into single figures.Richardson belted the ball over long off and into the O’Reilly Stand for a six that sealed a famous victory for Queensland in the 38th over.”Best shot of the day, best shot of the season, maybe,” Sandhu said. “I had full trust in Kane and he had full trust in me. We just worked together, chatting every over, just trying to get each other through for the next one, and the next one and the next one. I couldn’t have done it without him, no way.”Sandhu had been similarly influential with his bowling, swinging the ball with ease and reducing NSW to 4 for 2 inside three overs. He could have had a third early wicket but was denied an lbw appeal against Moises Henriques, who went on to steady the NSW innings in a 126-run partnership with opener Daniel Hughes.Henriques brought up his half-century by pulling Matt Renshaw over deep midwicket for one of his four sixes and went on to make a match-high 82.But Jack Wildermuth broke the partnership when he caught Hughes at fine leg from Liam Guthrie’s bowling in the 22nd over, sparking a NSW collapse of 8 for 87.

£165k-per-week star determined to quit Tottenham after talks with his camp

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou is facing the prospect of a key squad member being tempted away from N17 this summer, with the Spurs star now believed to be seriously keen on an exit before next season.

Players who are likely to leave Tottenham this summer

A host of players are up for the axe at Spurs, with some decisions reportedly already made behind-the-scenes.

Spurs doing groundwork to sign "exceptional" £55m winger; he's a key target

Tottenham are looking to make a splash in the summer transfer window.

After a lacklustre temporary spell in north London, RB Leipzig loanee Timo Werner is set to return to his parent club at the end of the season, with the Lilywhites and chairman Daniel Levy electing not to trigger the £8.5 million buy option in his contract.

Meanwhile, out-of-contract trio Sergio Reguilon, Alfie Whiteman and Fraser Forster are all set to leave Hotspur Way on free deals this summer, as their contracts tick down towards expiry on June 30.

Richarlison could also be sold by Tottenham, according to reports, following a season blighted by injuries for the Brazilian. Everton are believed to be expressing an interest in re-signing their former star striker, as per GiveMeSport, and Levy could take a £20 million loss on Richarlison by letting him go for around £40 million.

The likes of Manor Solomon and Bryan Gil, who have both enjoyed productive stints away from Spurs, on loan at Leeds United and Girona respectively, are also reportedly unlikely to be donning Lilywhites colours for the 2025/2026 season.

There is also the prospect of elite sides attempting to prise Postecoglou’s star players away, following what has been a disappointing second campaign in charge for the Tottenham boss.

Now, Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid are becoming seriously linked with a move for £165,000-per-week defender Cristian Romero.

Sky Sports reported this week that Atletico hold an interest in signing Romero this summer, with the Argentine believed to be a credible target for the La Liga side ahead of next campaign.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero

Some outlets have previously claimed that Levy could demand as much as £150 million to sell Romero, which may well be out of Atletico’s price range, but perhaps the centre-back himself could force through a move.

Cristian Romero determined to quit Tottenham after talks with his camp

As per reports from Spain, Romero “will do everything he can” to leave Tottenham this summer, and Atlético have already held talks with the South American’s camp as they ponder a move.

The 26-year-old is apparently ready to do his part in an attempt to seal a move away from north London, but it will also require a “significant investment” from Atlético, which Tottenham will demand if they even entertain the possibility of selling their crucial defender.

Simeone’s side appear determined, though, as they “dream” of striking a deal for Romero and luring him to the Wanda Metropolitano.

The former Atalanta star has been unable to exert his influence on the Spurs backline akin to last season, having spent the vast majority of this campaign sidelined through injury alongside partner Micky van de Ven. However, when fit and available, there is no denying he would be a sore miss and very difficult to replace.

This leaves Arteta with just Raheem Sterling as his only senior striking option, and even when given the chance to shine, he hasn’t exactly fired on all cylinders since joining Arsenal on loan from Chelsea last summer.

Sterling’s lack of impact against Leicester City last weekend forced Arteta to get very creative, with the Spaniard electing to replace Chelsea’s outcast by bringing on midfielder Mikel Merino as a makeshift centre-forward.

In dramatic fashion, the 28-year-old delivered a brace in the final 10 minutes to gift Arsenal a crucial three points in a 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium, but it is currently unclear whether Arteta will utilise Merino as a striker against West Ham on Saturday.

The Gunners’ current striking dilemma highlights why Arsenal really should’ve brought in a world-class number nine in January, while they had the chance.

Arsenal made a public bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, but according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, their low-ball £40 million proposal fell short of NSWE’s valuation for the England international.

The list of emergency free agents available to Arsenal is barren to say the least, with the biggest name among them, Diego Costa, most recently enduring a lacklustre stint at Wolves in 2022.

Arsenal preparing £50 million bid to sign Endrick from Real Madrid

Now, Ayto and the recruitment chiefs at London Colney are looking ahead to the summer window, as they seek to ensure Arteta won’t be left so short in the attacking third ahead of another potential Premier League title challenge next season.

The usual suspects, as well as more left-field targets, are linked with moves to Arsenal on a weekly basis – but a report has since emerged that Real Madrid starlet Endrick is now on their agenda.

As per a Spanish media source, Arsenal are believed to be very keen on Endrick, and they’re apparently the top candidates to secure his signature later this year. The Brazil international has found it difficult to break into Carlo Ancelotti’s side on a regular basis, with Arteta said to be offering a way out.

It is also claimed that Ayto and co are preparing a £50 million offer for the 18-year-old, and it will be intriguing to see if they do move forward considering his reputation as one of the most promising young Brazilians in world football.

McSweeney and Lehmann leave Queensland ruing missed opportunity

The visitors struck early on the final day but couldn’t push further for victory

Nathan McSweeney helped secure a draw for South Australia•Getty Images

Queensland have missed a golden opportunity to solidify their spot in the Sheffield Shield top two after Jake Lehmann and Nathan McSweeney secured a draw for South Australia. On a fighting final day in Adelaide, the pair batted through 65 overs to help wipe out Queensland’s 102-run first innings lead and take South Australia to 3 for 246 when the match was called.Wednesday’s result leaves the Bulls still in second spot on the ladder, but vulnerable of falling below Tasmania at the halfway point of the season if they beat Victoria this week.Under Sheffield Shield rules the top two teams qualify for the March final, with the majority of the rest of the season to be played without Test stars. But the story could have been so much different for Queensland. Xavier Bartlett ripped through the Redbacks to leave them 5 for 25 on the opening morning, placing Queensland in the driver’s seat early on.After the hosts fought back to be all out for 240, the Bulls then had the chance to build a big first-innings lead of close to 200 and push for an outright result at 2 for 184 in reply. But when Joe Burns ran himself out on 85, Queensland lost eight wickets in the middle session of day three to be all out for 342 and a lead of 102.Queensland then had one last sniff when Bartlet had Daniel Drew (37) edging on the first ball of the fourth morning, with his second-innings figures of 2 for 48 to go with his first-innings 4 for 64.The right-armer also then swung one across Jake Carder (54) to have him caught at third slip, leaving the Redbacks three down while still trailing by two.But then came McSweeney and Lehmann, with the former soaking up 218 balls for his unbeaten 77 and the latter scoring 68 from 181.The pair batted smartly in their 146-run stand, with the only major opportunity coming when McSweeney survived a close run-out call just before lunch. At one stage quick Gurinder Sandhu even turned to off spin, while Burns and fellow opening bat Bryce Street were both also used with the ball. The result means South Australia momentarily go ahead of NSW who are now bottom of the ladder, pending the result of the Blues’ clash with Western Australia at the SCG.

Aston Villa considering move to sign "great" Serie A winner alongside Bade

Potentially continuing a busy month, Aston Villa are now considering a move to challenge Juventus in the race to sign a Serie A winner for Unai Emery alongside Loic Bade this month.

Aston Villa transfer news

Following a fairly busy summer transfer window, Aston Villa have once again returned to the market to welcome key reinforcements for Emery. On that front, Donyell Malen is already over the line, whilst the Villans are reportedly pushing ahead in an attempt to welcome both Bade and young Levante right-back Andres Garcia before the end of the month.

Improving both their frontline and defensive options, Aston Villa have their sights on securing back-to-back top four finishes in the Premier League in what would cement their place among those in European contention with every passing year. But they may not be done there.

According to Graeme Bailey, Aston Villa are now considering a move to challenge Juventus for Fikayo Tomori, who has lost his starting place at AC Milan this season.

The Italian giants have reportedly tabled a €5m (£4m) loan offer with a €20m (£17m) obligation to buy on top of another €5m (£4m) in bonuses to their Serie A counterparts but could now face competition from Aston Villa and a number of other Premier League sides.

"Fantastic" £25m star now gives approval to join Aston Villa this month

Unai Emery is looking to bring in a defender.

ByDominic Lund Jan 17, 2025

The defender is reportedly open to a move in 2025, but could yet see his Milan career saved by new manager Sergio Conceicao, who is reportedly a big fan of the former Chelsea man.

"Great" Tomori needs Premier League return

After losing his place at AC Milan, a return to the Premier League to end some unfinished business should be Tomori’s next move. And Aston Villa represent an intelligent option. Not many have joined Emery’s project and struggled to impress. In fact, whether it’s been Jhon Duran, Amadou Onana or Morgan Rogers, players have discovered their best form more often than not under the Spaniard.

Tomori has some unfinished business in the top flight too after leaving Chelsea with more of a whimper than the initial roar that he burst onto the scene with. Now, he could get the chance to come back and haunt his former club courtesy of Aston Villa, where he could also form quite the partnership with Bade.

Despite the fact that the numbers make for solid reading, Tomori has still found himself forced to watch on from the bench at times this season in what is quite the fall from the starring role he previously enjoyed in Italy.

Praised for “great physical attributes” by Milan legend Franco Baresi in 2021, Tomori must now rediscover his best form away from AC Milan and potentially back in the Premier League.
