Rangers: Beale Could Sign Own Callum Wilson At Ibrox In £7m Phenom

Glasgow Rangers could have found their own version of a top-flight star as Michael Beale's interest in Cyriel Dessers has become well-known in recent weeks…

What's the latest Rangers transfer news?

With the Teddy Bears' arch-rivals retaining the Scottish Premiership last season, the Glasgow giants have got their work cut out for them if they're to overthrow the Hoops, so expect a busy summer from Beale's side.

Already, the club has been linked to numerous names as they look to strengthen the squad.

The likes of Lyndon Dykes and Charlie Cresswell are just a couple of the many names that have been linked with Rangers so far this summer.

Cremonese forward Cyriel Dessers.

One other name that the club are reportedly interested in is the Cremonese frontman, whose underlying stats and style of play are very similar to the Premier League star Callum Wilson.

Adding a goalscorer to the side is vital for Rangers, but adding one who so closely resembles a star like the Newcastle United and England man could be pivotal in the club regaining their status as Scottish champions.

How does Cyriel Dessers compare to Callum Wilson?

According to Opta Analyst, the underlying numbers between the duo are very similar. In fact, the player comparison tool gave them a 65.6% similarity score.

The duo take a similar number of shots per game, with Dessers – who is reportedly valued at just £7m – averaging 1.9 shots a game, while Wilson averaged 2.4 and the majority of both forwards' efforts came within the penalty area.

In fact, both men spent plenty of time inside the opposition area, with the Cremona forward among the top 95% of strikers in the top five European leagues for touches inside the penalty box, while Wilson was among the top 89%.

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson

Another similarity the pair share is their aerial ability, with the "phenomenal" and "incredible" Dessers – as once hailed by ESPN correspondent Cecilia Lagos – in the 38th percentile of forwards in Europe's top five leagues in terms of aerial battles won, while Wilson put up similar numbers, with the Newcastle striker in the 40th percentile.

Comparatively, the strikers very rarely showcase a level of ball-carrying ability either, with the Serie A man's average of 0.5 successful dribbles a game almost identical to Wilson's 0.4 successful dribbles a game.

While the Newcastle man enjoyed a much more prolific season last campaign, the attributes and the tools are all there for the ten-goal machine to replicate his success if he were to make a move to Rangers, providing the club with a strong, goalscoring poacher that may help swing the balance of power in Scotland as they chase Celtic again next season.

Celtic Could Replace Postecoglou With ‘incredible’ Manager

An update has emerged on Celtic and their plans to find a new head coach to take over at Parkhead for the 2023/24 campaign.

What's the latest on Kieran McKenna to Celtic?

According to the Daily Record, the Hoops have identified Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna as one of their targets as they attempt to replace Ange Postecoglou.

The report claims that they are eyeing the soon-to-be Championship boss as his team deploys a similar style of play to the Australian.

Tottenham Hotspur appointed Postecoglou as their new chief on Tuesday and the Scottish giants are now looking to find his heir, with McKenna and Manchester City's Enzo Maresca among the options on the table.

Would Kieran McKenna be a success at Celtic?

Majority shareholder Dermot Desmond could get Parkhead rocking next season by hiring the Tractor Boys tactician as his style of play and love for attacking football could make him a big success in Scotland.

Postecoglou made going to Celtic Park each week an exciting prospect as his team ended 2022/23 with a staggering 114 goals from their 38 Scottish Premiership matches – winning 32 of them.

Former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou.

The supporters could get behind the ex-Manchester United youth coach in the same way as the 37-year-old has shown plenty of promise in his short career as a coach who can build a clinical outfit.

Ipswich finished outside the play-offs in League One in the two seasons before McKenna arrived halfway through the 2021/22 campaign.

He was then able to push on and lead the East Anglian club to a second-placed finish in the third tier of English football in 22/23, which secured their promotion to the Championship with a whopping 98 points.

Whilst they did not win the title with Plymouth Argyle managing a stunning 101 points, his Ipswich team were the great entertainers of the division as they scored 101 times in the league – 19 more than any other outfit.

McKenna, whose work has been described as "absolutely incredible" by his captain Sam Morsy, typically deploys a 4-2-3-1 formation, which is not a far cry from the attacking 4-3-3 set-up that Postecoglou used during his time in Scotland.

Only the midfield configuration has a minor change with one of the central focal points playing slightly further up the pitch.

The 37-year-old tactician, who won 15 of his 22 matches in charge of United's U18 side in the Premier League 2 in 17/18, is unproven at the top level but his impressive work with Ipswich should not be sniffed at.

He turned the English team from a mid-table League One side into a promotion-winning outfit that destroyed the opposition by plundering goal after goal whilst playing football that has been likened to Postecoglou's progressive passing approach.

Therefore, Desmond could get Celtic Park rocking by appointing McKenna, a manager who can make the Hoops an entertaining side to watch, just as they were under their now former boss.

Liverpool Could Sign Kvaratskhelia 2.0 in £51m "Wizard"

Liverpool target Federico Chiesa has been placed on the transfer market, according to reports from Italy, with Juventus seeking to recuperate funds after only qualifying for the Europa Conference League this year.

What's the latest on Federico Chiesa to Liverpool?

Indeed, CalcioMercato claims that Chiesa has been transfer-listed for €60m (£51m) following the Old Lady's ten-point deduction due to financial mismanagement, and Liverpool are among the suitors.

Jurgen Klopp's club is joined in its interest by Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United, both pushing for a deal for the 25-year-old, who has two years remaining on his current deal in Turin.

Liverpool already have a wealth of attacking talent at their disposal and the onus is on the defensive and midfield departments, but Chiesa is a long-term target and could complete Anfield's frontline.

How good is Federico Chiesa?

The Reds are understandably undergoing something of a transitional phase right now, with a midfield exodus this summer preceded by the sale of distinguished attacker Sadio Mane one year ago.

Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo have all arrived over the past 18 months, and there have been tantalising glimpses of the cogs coming together last term despite the lacklustre travails of the squad, failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Next season, Klopp and co have to get the recipe right, forge a title challenge and compete for the Europa League trophy, and as such Chiesa could be the perfect player to bolster the right flank and provide Mohamed Salah with some respite – especially considering the Egyptian star will leave a chasm when departing mid-season for the African Cup of Nations.

Chiesa can fill the void; a fleet-footed "wizard" – as hailed by DaveOCKOP – with more than a little creative ingenuity, the £153k-per-week ace recovered from a big injury this year and scored four goals and six assists from just nine starts across all competitions, with a late-season purple patch underscoring his return to full-firing form.

Federico Chiesa

The 41-cap international ranks among the top 4% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for rate of assists, the top 15% for progressive carries and the top 16% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, showcasing his flair and drawing parallels to one of the hottest commodities of the recently-concluded term in Napoli's Georgian sensation Khvivha Kvaratskhelia who is the 'most similar' player to the Italian.

Another Serie A sorcerer, Kvaratskhelia has been heralded as "magic" by Fabrizio Romano and was instrumental in Napoli's Scudetto-winning campaign after signing for a bargain €10m (£9m) last summer, having scored 14 goals and supplied 17 assists across all competitions.

The 22-year-old also excels with his barrelling runs, ranking among the top 6% for progressive carries and the top 5% for successful take-ons per 90, and he is undoubtedly one of Europe's most coveted talents.

Considering Chiesa is also "impossible to stop", as he was praised by Gianluigi Buffon, Liverpool could add a conclusive dimension to their offensive ranks with a swoop, and with silver-laden success the only answer for the Reds, his signature might just be worthwhile.

Auckland ace 176 chase with Phillips, Nicol fifties

Half-centuries from opening batsmen Rob Nicol and Glenn Phillips steered Auckland to a seven-wicket win, as they chased down 176 in their Super Smash clash against Otago. Auckland also benefited from handy cameos by Colin de Grandhomme (30 off 14) and Jeet Raval (21 off 12) as they chased the target with two overs to spare at the University Oval in Dunedin. Otago had put up 175 for 7 after winning the toss, riding on contributions from the middle order.Nicol dominated the opening partnership of of 71, scoring 51 of those himself. He was stumped off Rhys Phillips’ leg spin in the ninth over, having struck three fours and as many sixes in his 36-ball knock. Glenn Phillips then shared partnerships of 51 with Raval for the second wicket and 38 with de Grandhomme for the third. He saw his team through by staying not out on 62 off 44 balls that included five fours and two sixes.Earlier, Otago’s middle order pulled them from 13 for 2 in the second over to 175. Hamish Rutherford, the captain, struck 42 off 27 balls and shared a 36-run fourth-wicket stand with Josh Finnie, who top-scored with an unbeaten 45. A late cameo from Brad Wilson who blitzed 30 off 15 balls gave them a strong finish.Pacers De Grandhomme and Donovan Grobbelaar took two wickets each, while left-arm spinner Ben Horne took one. The win, Auckland’s fifth in nine matches, took them to second place on the points table.

Arsenal: "Joke" £51m Target Could Make Saliba Unstoppable At The Emirates

Arsenal remain interested in a Premier League rival's player, with a recent update on their pursuit having now been dropped…

What's the latest on Joao Cancelo to Arsenal?

Speaking on The Gooner Talk YouTube channel, journalist Harry Symeou detailed the numerous players that the Gunners have been linked with despite the window having only truly opened on Wednesday.

Whilst the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Declan Rice were mentioned, what he noted about Joao Cancelo was perhaps the most interesting.

He claimed:

"I really do think that Arsenal want to do this deal, I really, really do. Whether they’ll be able to do it or not remains to be seen, because I think financially this is quite a difficult one to do.

“We know that there was an option-to-buy available for Bayern at around about €60m (£51m) and we know that Bayern don’t want to take that up. This suggests that Manchester City are of the belief that the player is worth [the] money and he absolutely is.

“It’s going to cost money to get him off of a rival and City do see us as that now, I don’t think they’re going to be letting people move across to Arsenal as freely as they did last summer looking at the way that elevated us."

How good could Joao Cancelo be at Arsenal?

Whilst the acquisition of someone so ingrained in a philosophy akin to Mikel Arteta's would offer widescale improvements, it could be argued that the comfortability of the defender in his role could have a particularly revolutionary effect on those within the back line.

After all, should he invert to form the base of a box midfield, just like he has done at times under Pep Guardiola, it could allow the likes of William Saliba to truly thrive and become one of the best ball-playing defenders in the game.

The way in which Cancelo accepts the ball in awkward areas, as a creatively unique full-back, would offer another key passing lane for the Frenchman who has enjoyed a stellar first full year playing English football.

When compared to other central defenders across Europe, the 22-year-old ranks in the top 8% for passes attempted and the top 7% for pass completion per 90, via FBref. This has boosted his 6.96 average rating, further upheld through 1.3 tackles and three clearances per game too, via Sofascore.

william-saliba-gabriel-arsenal

Meanwhile, the Portugal international, when put alongside other full-backs in Europe, blows them all out of the water creatively. He ranks in the top 2% for progressive carries, the top 2% for successful take-ons, the top 1% for assists, but most importantly for Saliba, the top 4% for progressive passes received, all per 90 via FBref.

This has led teammate Jack Grealish to wax lyrical about his qualities, claiming:

"He is so good technically. You know when we're playing one-touch, two-touch, he's just a joke and then he can shoot right foot, left foot from anywhere."

City's treble-winning boss Pep Guardiola would also supplement this, by outlining one particularly outstanding showing: "He was aggressive and has incredible quality with the ball."

With a defensive steel showcased in his 1.5 tackles and one interception per Bundesliga game last season, but an unparalleled ability to take the ball and forge opportunities, Cancelo has all the attributes to come into the Emirates and help make Saliba one of the best in his position.

Sussex bring Ross Taylor back for T20 Blast

Sussex have confirmed that Ross Taylor will re-join them as an overseas player for the 2017 NatWest T20 Blast.Taylor, the former New Zealand captain, was by some distance the most productive Sussex batsman in the competition last year. He scored 394 runs, at an average of 56.28 and strike-rate of 133.10, with his highest score of 93 not out coming in victory over Gloucestershire at Bristol, taking just 48 deliveries and including eight sixes. Eleven men scored more runs in the competition in 2016, but none of them had as high an average or played as few games.Despite Taylor’s form, Sussex failed to progress beyond the group stages of the competition. His return, alongside the long-term signings of Stiaan van Zyl and David Wiese (both as Kolpak registrations; Wiese also had a spell at the club in 2016) and Laurie Evans, a destructive T20 batsman from Warwickshire, should strengthen them.Taylor will be available for the entire T20 campaign which, in 2017, does not start until July.”We are thrilled to have Ross joining us for the T20 competition,” Mark Davis, the Sussex head coach, said. “He was outstanding in the competition last season and to have him back is brilliant for the club. Not only is Ross a world class player but a fantastic role model to our younger players.”

CSA following 'proper process' over Domingo's contract

Several insiders have said that CSA asking Russell Domingo to reapply for the South African coaching job is an administrative formality

Firdose Moonda31-Jan-2017After overseeing South Africa through one of their toughest transitions, Russell Domingo will have to reapply for the coaching job if he hopes to continue beyond August this year. Does that really mean, however, that his position is on the line? No, according to several insiders who say the application process is an administrative formality and not a judgment on Domingo’s work.”I don’t think there is anything sinister about it,” one official told ESPNcricinfo. “Cricket South Africa is just making sure that if Russell’s contract is going to be renewed, it comes out of a proper process.”The reason lies in the number of extensions Domingo has been granted in his tenure. His contract has already been extended three times, and because he is on a fixed-term deal CSA cannot risk creating a reasonable expectation that his contract will be renewed in perpetuity, because that will put them at risk of legal action should a termination occur.Domingo was initially contracted as head coach on a two-year deal from May 2013 – after the Champions Trophy that year when Gary Kirsten stepped down – until the end of April 2015. In September 2014, however, he was given a year’s extension until April 2016 to guarantee him his position irrespective of the result of the 2015 World Cup.In June 2015, Domingo was given another year to take to him to April 2017 and then in October 2016, despite a string of poor results that included South Africa failing to reach the final of a triangular series in the Caribbean, Domingo’s deal was topped up by four months to last until the end of the England tour in August 2017. At that point, Domingo was informed that there would be no further extensions in order to follow protocol.”With contracts like this, a decision also has to be made depending on certain tours or when the most logical time to put out a call for applications might be,” one official said. “The timing can get a bit awkward because you can’t have uncertainty over the coaching position before a major tournament or series but at the same time, the contract has an expiration date. It’s important that CSA does not create the expectation that the contract will just roll over. They are trying to avoid that reasonable expectation by making sure that if they choose to appoint Domingo again, it will be through a procedure that involves other applicants.”CSA has already confirmed that Domingo can apply if he wishes but he has not given indication of whether he intends to. The last time Domingo addressed the media was at the conclusion of South Africa’s T20 series defeat against Sri Lanka, when he discussed plans for the Champions Trophy this year.Prior to that, Domingo had spoken after South Africa’s Test series win over Sri Lanka and admitted there were times during the slump in 2015 and 2016 – when South Africa lost five out of eight Tests, were booted out of the World T20 in the first round, and failed to reach the final of the of a triangular series in the Caribbean – when he thought he would lose his job despite having the support of the players.”I could go tomorrow. Nothing is certain. I by no means look too far ahead in my coaching career. I take it one series at a time,” Domingo said in mid-January. “You never know what’s around the corner in coaching. I’ve always felt that the support that I’ve got from the players is the most important thing.”Domingo continues to enjoy that backing. When the South African team found out about the need for him to reapply for his job, they were playing Sri Lanka in the first ODI in Port Elizabeth. Afterwards, ODI captain AB de Villiers said it was a “bitter pill to swallow” because Domingo was “like family” to the players.De Villiers’ contract with CSA will also come up for discussion soon. He is currently on a two-year deal but after announcing that he has made himself unavailable for Test cricket for most of 2017, it is understood CSA’s top brass is tempted to revisit the terms of the deal. However, South Africa players are contracted on a rankings system which means that their value, rather than the frequency with which they appear, determines the value of their contracts.”The selectors decide the player rankings and it depends on how they view that players’ contribution, be it in one format or in many,” one official said. “So it is possible that de Villiers could be viewed as the most important player even though he won’t be playing Test cricket but it is also possible that could affect his ranking. At the end of the day, that could make a difference to his salary.”Despite his Test hiatus, de Villiers remains South Africa’s one-day captain and has made it his priority to take them to the 2019 World Cup.

Liverpool Are Readying A Bid For £34m Dynamo

Liverpool are reportedly readying a bid for Juventus winger Federico Chiesa as Jurgen Klopp looks to add some strength in depth to his attack.

What’s the latest on Federico Chiesa to Liverpool?

According to reports in Italy, Liverpool are prepared to bid €40m (£34m) for Chiesa this summer as Juventus are willing to sell the player.

The Serie A side have reportedly valued the winger at around €60m (£51.4m), and with his contract expiring in 2025, Juventus would rather get a fee that matches their valuation this summer as opposed to waiting 12 months and being in a weaker position to negotiate.

However, Klopp could face stiff competition, with Chelsea and Bayern Munich touted for a move, while Paris Saint-Germain, who watched him during a few games last year, as per the report, are also keen.

Could Liverpool sign Federico Chiesa this summer?

The main priority for the Anfield side is surely to bolster their midfield options, especially with James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all departing, leaving big gaps to fill.

Alexis Mac Allister joined a few weeks ago, yet there will surely be more business over the coming weeks, and a move for Chiesa perhaps shouldn’t be out of the question, despite the Reds having plenty of left-wingers, including Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.

Chiesa, however, can operate across the front three with ease, being able to play on the right wing as well as through the middle – and this could be a big bonus for Klopp, especially if the Italian can find the form he displayed before suffering an agonising knee injury in January 2022.

Indeed, during 2020/21 – the last time Chiesa played a full season injury-free, the Italy international scored 14 goals and grabbed ten assists, showcasing how dangerous he was from a wide position with a consistent run of games under his belt.

federico-chiesa-liverpool-transfer-news-premier-league

The 25-year-old not only scored nine Serie A goals, but he also managed to average 1.5 key passes per game and create a staggering 18 big chances for his teammates – ranking fourth across the entire division during that term for the latter.

The 41-cap dynamo also played an integral role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph two years ago, scoring twice in seven games, including against Spain in the semi-finals – and with former Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon suggesting that he is “impossible to stop”, then it is evident that Klopp must make sure he lures Chiesa to Anfield before he is poached by another side.
