West Ham Could Sign Next Payet In Move For £34.5m "Star Boy"

West Ham United are interested in signing one of the hottest attacking properties around this summer.

But who is that player?

What’s the latest West Ham transfer news?

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Irons are set to ‘open initial talks’ to sign Mohammed Kudus, who has been described as the ‘priority target’ in case Lucas Paqueta joins Manchester City.

The Italian journalist revealed that ‘positive talks’ have already begun with Kudus, who is ‘open’ to the transfer. Nonetheless, the deal still remains very dependent on Paqueta’s situation.

It's understood the Brazilian has reached an agreement with the reigning European Champions and wants the move. The opening £70m bid was rejected by the Hammers, but City will submit a new one.

On 5 August, Brighton settled on a fee with Ajax in the region of €40m (£34.5m) for the attacking midfielder, who was described as a ‘key target’ for Roberto De Zerbi.

However, it was revealed by The Guardian that a move to the south coast has collapsed due to personal terms, opening the door for West Ham, Arsenal, and Chelsea.

What does Mohammed Kudus offer?

The high level of Premier League interest in Kudus is indicative of the forward’s admirable and sought-after quality. Last season can be labelled as a ‘breakout’ for the Ghanaian, who emphatically hit new heights in his productivity.

Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus.

In 42 appearances across all competitions, he recorded 25 goal involvements and also enjoyed an eye-catching World Cup, scoring twice and completing 71% of his dribbles.

During the international tournament, his former teammate Calvin Bassey described him as a “star boy” and his reputation has arguably skyrocketed thanks to his positional versatility – according to The Athletic, in 2,272 minutes of Eredivisie football since the start of the 2021/22 season, he has played 22% of the time as a striker, 40% as a right-winger, 9% as an attacking midfielder and 22% as a central midfielder.

To look adequately equipped and confident enough to appear in this vast array of positions, as well as to be trusted in this role is a testament to his intelligence and potential.

To possess a player of this versatility, output, and creativity mirrors the glorious days of the irrepressible Dimitri Payet, who was equally effective as either a left-winger or attacking midfielder.

Between 2015 and 2017, the mercurial Frenchman made 60 appearances in all competitions and registered 38 goal involvements. In 28 games on the left, he scored seven goals and created 13 assists, then from 27 matches in the centre, he netted seven times and crafted eight assists.

In Payet’s debut season in England, the joyous technician was named the Premier League Player of the Year at the 2016 London Football Awards, as well as the West Ham Player of the Year.

The playmaker’s majestic creativity prompted huge praise from Zinedine Zidane, who said at the time: “He is one of the most important and talented players, not just in the French side, but in Europe.

“From a coach’s perspective, he is everything you look for in an attacking midfield player. He can score goals, he can create goals, he has real quality from set pieces.”

The east London faithful are desperately yearning for a new talent to replicate Payet’s heroics, and Kudus is well-placed to do so.

Leeds Could Land Dream Piroe Partner In "Superb" £9k-p/w Ace

Leeds United's euphoric return to the Premier League slowly deteriorated after that emphatic first season, with the Whites now in the second tier after three campaigns in the big time.

Having churned through managers last term, promotion specialist Daniel Farke has been appointed to orchestrate a swift journey back to the top flight, but Leeds have endured a testing transfer window and a slow start to the Championship season.

Several first-team stars have headed for the exit door, and while Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow and Joel Piroe have all been signed, the club are still pushing for further acquisitions before the transfer window closes next week.

What's the latest on Joseph Paintsil to Leeds?

According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, Leeds have recently proposed a deal to Belgian outfit Genk for winger Joseph Paintsil, offering €10m (£9m) plus a sell-on clause.

Southampton are also interested, though the player's preference is believed to be the Elland Road club.

However, Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has claimed that Farke's side are considering withdrawing their offer after Genk rejected the Whites' approach.

Who is Joseph Paintsil?

The £9k-per-week winger has impressed in the Belgian Pro League over the past several seasons, having remarkably posted 18 goals and assists apiece across all competitions last term, after previously earning praise for being part of a "superb" title-winning Genk team in 2018/19 by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

As per Sofascore, the 25-year-old plundered 17 strikes and assisted a further 11 as Genk topped the 2022/23 regular season table, complementing his direct output with 1.4 key passes per game and creating 12 big chances.

The nine-cap Ghana star has an eye for goal himself, but also appears to be a trustworthy and consistent creative force, and as such, he could be the perfect partner for Piroe if he transfers his qualities from Belgium to Yorkshire.

Piroe was signed for Leeds from divisional rivals Swansea City this week, completing a transfer in excess of £10m, and appears to be a most auspicious signing after demonstrating his destructive qualities across two campaigns in the Championship, scoring 23 goals in the 2021/22 term before landing 20 last year.

He even got off the mark as Leeds earned their first win of the campaign at Ipswich Town this weekend.

Ghana forwardJoseph Paintsil.

As per FBref, the Dutch talisman also ranks among the top 4% of strikers playing at a similar level for pass completion and the top 16% for interceptions per 90.

This could ensure he fits right into Farke's system at Elland Road, with the German manager striving for possession-based football speckled with intelligent combinations and an emphasis on driving the ball into dangerous areas.

By utilising his ball-playing skills and getting stuck in defensively, Piroe could influence the play from a multitude of angles, all the while maintaining a cutting edge in front of goal.

And by maintaining this level of crispness with his all-encompassing approach, Paintsil would have a licence to thrive and drive at goal from the right flank, attacking incisively and indeed flourishing as a creative outlet.

Leeds could bring the Ghana international in at a time when the club needs some newfound panache to truly kickstart their campaign, and with Piroe's signature already tied up, Farke's squad is starting to take shape.

Lahore Blues cruise to National T20 Cup title

In a tournament replete with close finishes, the final of the National T20 Cup was a damp squib. Lahore Blues sealed a comfortable victory against Lahore Whites, winning by seven wickets with nearly three overs to spare. Set 128 to win, Lahore Blues, who had registered the highest score of the tournament on Wednesday – 221 against FATA – were never in any danger of falling short. Opener Imam-ul-Haq led the chase, scoring an unbeaten 59, including seven fours and a six.Salman Butt’s Whites had earlier struggled with the bat. Though Butt batted through the innings, his knock never took on any momentum, and the strike-rate was well below what was required to put on a total his bowlers could be confident of defending. His 62 came off 59 deliveries, and with none of the big hitters in his side able to get in, the 127 they managed was always going to be too little. It didn’t help that the Blues’ bowlers expertly hit their lines and lengths, only one of them conceding more than 6.50 runs per over. Atif Jabbar was the pick of the bunch, taking 2 for 24 in four overs. This is the second year that National T20 Cup final has featured two sides from the same city. Last year, Karachi Blues and Karachi Whites squared off for the trophy, with the Blues coming out on top.

Liverpool Suffer Fresh Injury Blow

Liverpool host Aston Villa in the Premier League this weekend, but they have been dealt an injury blow in the lead-up to the game, according to an update from reliable journalist James Pearce.

Who is injured for Liverpool?

The Reds have enjoyed a good start to the 2023/24 season, picking up seven points from their opening three league matches, in what have been testing circumstances.

A 1-1 draw away to Chelsea on the opening weekend was a solid result, before having to battle their way to a 3-1 victory at home to Bournemouth, making do with 10 men after Alexis Mac Allister was sent off.

Last weekend's stunning 2-1 win over Newcastle was even better, with Virgil van Dijk red-carded in the first half before Darwin Nunez came off the substitutes' bench to turn the game on its head.

Next up for Jurgen Klopp's side is Sunday's visit of a strong-looking Villa side, who continue to go from strength to strength under Unai Emery.

They lost 5-1 at Newcastle in their first game in what was something of a shock result, but have since secured back-to-back victories against Everton and Burnley.

Ahead of the match, Liverpool know they are without both Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, who are suspended and injured respectively, while there have been question marks over Thiago's involvement. He hasn't played yet this season after having hip surgery in the summer and a key update has now emerged.

Is Thiago injured against Aston Villa?

sofyan-amrabat-thiago-alcantara-liverpool-transfer-news

Taking to Twitter on Friday, Pearce confirmed that Thiago will miss out against Villa on Sunday after suffering another setback in his recovery:

"Klopp says Thiago has had a setback since returning to training this week. Won't feature v Villa."

It is reaching the stage where Thiago simply has to be treated like a luxury player at Liverpool – someone who can be a great asset when available, but who Klopp must accept that he can't rely on and will be sidelined most of the time.

The 32-year-old cannot seem to stay fit for an extended period of time, which is no help to anyone, and this latest setback is a cruel blow for the player himself, who is such a fantastic footballer when fit and firing.

Klopp has called his player "sensational" in the past, and he will be desperate to have him back after the international break.

With Thiago missing, it would be a surprise if Liverpool's midfield changed from the aforementioned win away to Newcastle, with Wataru Endo given another chance to impress sitting in front of the defence, having found it tough at St James' Park.

Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai should then continue as the two No 8s, with the former no doubt desperate to get into a groove in that position, having been asked to play as a deep-lying No 6 on occasion this season.

Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott are also good options should Klopp decide to rotate his squad, but with the international break coming next weekend, there is no reason not to play the strongest possible starting XI available.

Southampton In Talks To Sign "Unbelievable" £2.3k-p/w Target

Southampton are looking to add a free-scoring football league striker to their side that could propel the club to an instant promotion from the Championship…

What’s the latest Southampton transfer news?

According to Football Insider, the Saints are in talks to sign Sunderland’s Ross Stewart and are expected to bid for him before Friday night’s transfer deadline.

The Black Cats won’t sanction the departure of the 27-year-old until they find a replacement. However, it is looking increasingly likely that he will leave the Stadium of Light as he won’t sign a new deal and has entered the final year of his contract.

The forward has been attracting interest from multiple clubs this summer, including newly-promoted Luton Town, and a host of Championship outfits.

With Everton and Crystal Palace reportedly chasing after Che Adams, it would open the door for Stewart to have a highly influential and prominent role down south.

Would Ross Stewart be a good signing for Southampton?

Since signing for Sunderland in January 2021, Stewart has established himself as a productive, prolific, and dangerous talisman.

In the 2021/22 season, the Scotsman netted 26 times and voted the PFA Fans Player of the Year for League One. He also netted the second goal in Sunderland’s 2-0 EFL League One play-off final victory over Wycombe Wanderers to gain promotion back to the Championship.

The £2.3k-per-week dynamo started second-tier life in thrilling fashion, registering seven goal contributions in eight games, but a hamstring injury kept Stewart out of action for 14 games.

Upon returning to action in December 2022, he scored five times in six games before suffering a devastating Achilles injury which sidelined him for the rest of the campaign.

Fitness problems have stalled his development and consistency but in a short span of time, Stewart has swiftly demonstrated that he is an incredibly effective attacker.

Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.

His teammate Alex Pritchard has heaped praise on Stewart and said:

“[Stewart] is unbelievable. The size of him, on the ball, he can run, he can hold the ball up, he's good with his feet. He's got everything. He’s great in the air. Holds the ball up and he gets in behind.”

Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips has echoed this sentiment and added:

“You’ve got a player up front that works his socks off, can finish all types and never gives up, it’s a great lesson for any young striker.”

A player of this profile and quality could make for a formidable partner for Adam Armstrong, who has enjoyed a stirring start to the season.

The former Blackburn Rovers frontman has already netted four times from 2.93 xG (expected goals) and is the Championship’s top scorer so far this term.

After netting the winner against QPR on Saturday, Gareth Ainsworth said: “A £15million striker was the difference today. Armstrong has scored a lot of goals already this season and he got a chance and took it.”

If Armstrong can continue to keep scoring and Stewart can hit the ground running at Saint Marys then promotion is looking like an extremely plausible possibility.

It would be yet another exciting signing in what has been a promising transfer window for the club.

Stokes remains IPL drawcard, but questions abound

The news that Ben Stokes has been charged with affray, in the wake of his arrest in Bristol in September, has raised more questions than answers ahead of the IPL auction which takes place in Bengaluru on January 27-28, with the eight franchises seeking urgent clarity about his availability for this year’s tournament.Stokes made a box-office debut in the IPL last year, finishing as the Most Valuable Player after helping Rising Pune Supergiants to the final. Pune had fiercely bid for Stokes, paying him a record INR 14.5 crore (approx. US $2.16 million in 2017) and the Durham and England allrounder proved he was well worth the big money with consistent performances. However, in the wake of the CPS verdict, there are no immediate guarantees that he will be back for a second season. “We need a level of certainty in case he is not available after he is bought at the auction,” an owner of a franchise that has finished IPL runner-up more than once told ESPNcricinfo. “We need to know the degree of control IPL will have on his availability.”We will seek to understand what happens now: what is the process? What will be happen if there is one eventuality or another?”Assuming he is provided with a no-objection certificate (NOC) to play in the IPL – and Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, has already indicated that the board will not stand in his way – Stokes will be one of the 36 top players who will kick off the auction, having listed his base price at the maximum of INR 2 crore (USD 315,000). He is understood to be a target for most of the eight franchises, which are busy doing mock auction exercises with less than a fortnight to go until the event.Clarity is also sought for a scenario in which Stokes is bought at the auction, but later has to withdraw from the tournament due to the trial. Currently, the IPL only allows replacements if a player is ruled out through injury, whereupon that replacement is paid on a pro-rata basis.”If he is not available, will there be a replacement and what would it mean for the franchise?” said the owner. “What would availability mean in this case because there are extraneous circumstances?”Ben Stokes is off to celebrate after dismissing Kane Williamson•BCCI

The ECB is expected to convene in the next 48 hours to consider Stokes’ England availability while sub judice. At present, there is no date fixed for the trial, which the authorities have already indicated could last for six months or more.”We have to see what stance the ECB takes,” a director from another prominent franchise said. “The charge has just come out, so it is too early to decide, but we are definitely bothered about the outcome of the trial.”We need see the implications. They have said clearly it might go for six months. So assuming the trial extends beyond the IPL, as it is expected to, then there is a lot of uncertainty. Also you never know his mental state, you can’t just come and play with freedom if the trial is in the backdrop.”Nevertheless, Stokes’ aura has not diminished despite his absence from top-level cricket in the past three months, with few players capable of matching his world-class allround attributes. According to a chief executive officer at one of the franchises, which has a strong purse going into the auction, several teams are expected to “go all out” to secure his services, and it would not be a surprise if the player ended up as the most expensive buy for the second year running.”The only question we want to know is about whether he is available full time or not,” said the official. However, some caveats remain for a player who will have been sidelined for the best part of six months by the time the 2018 IPL gets underway on April 4.”You look for certainty on the cricketing front,” the franchise owner said. “You will also look at what does it mean for his character. It will require now greater understanding of Ben Stokes as a team player. As a franchise we always look for players who will put the team before himself. Will he take this as a challenge and come out all guns blazing or will it affect him in any other way?”

'Going in with no fear of India' – Bangladesh U-19 coach

Bangladesh Under-19s have not played in eight days, but coach Damien Wright is sure they will be fresh when they face India on Friday

Shashank Kishore in Queenstown25-Jan-2018Eight days between matches can make most sides edgy and restless. Not Bangladesh Under-19s, who have enjoyed their time in Queenstown, finding a balance between training in the morning and going out to soak in the local culture in the evenings. They have also been trying their hand at a number of sports activities – except those of the extreme kind Queenstown is so famous for. They beat Namibia and Canada quite convincingly, but were undone by bounce and a fiery England attack in their final group game. It’s this adjusting to conditions that all Bangladesh sides that have toured New Zealand haven’t quite managed to do, which a record of one win and 21 losses across formats indicates. This is exactly why the current group prepared early and arrived in New Zealand 15 days before the start of the tournament. Damien Wright, their Australian coach, who has previously worked with the senior New Zealand side (bowling coach), Hobart Hurricanes (head coach), Cricket Tasmania (senior assistant coach), Cricket Victoria (bowling coach) and Melbourne Stars (assistant/bowling coach), has tried to inculcate condition-specific training, which he hopes to reap the rewards for eventually.Time off leading into the game has allowed them the time to regroup. “We had a disappointing game by our standards against England. We had a lot of time to reassess and have a think about conditions and how we’re playing,” Wright said. “The eight days have been huge for us. If we had to keep going and play one or two days after that game, the mood could have been different. We are grateful for the time we’ve had, we’re in good spirits, have enjoyed really good training days and the boys are confident going into the game. You have to have that belief and we’re against the favourites, so you have play them eventually.”With Queenstown enjoying some of its hottest weather, the surface, which is the same as the one where Lloyd Pope took a record 8 for 35 to send England packing, will become a talking point. Bangladesh are, expectedly, spin heavy, and will relish bowling on a surface that could come closest to resembling Mirpur. This could bring their spinners Afif Hossain and Tipu Sultan into the game.”The bounce will be a little different compared to where we came from at Lincoln or where India are coming from [in Mount Manganui],” Wright said. “That will be the element of surprise, we’re hoping. That was one of the major areas where we didn’t do well against England. I’m grateful we played that game here and will use it to our advantage for sure.”We’re also lucky to have a fantastic analyst in Salauddin, and he’s done a lot of research on the Indian team. You must do that. I won’t say too much about the last game here (Australia v England), but a legspinner (Pope) took 8 for 35 and bowled a lot of wrong ‘uns. You need to know if you haven’t played against the opposition a lot, you need to look at them. We’ve certainly looked at them, there are a few dangerous players in there. It’s about us making sure we prepare as well as we can and get our A games in order.”As much as the focus has been on preparing correctly, Bangladesh are hoping to draw inspiration from their win over India at the Under-19 Asia Cup at Kuala Lumpur in November. Pinak Ghosh, who made a half-century there, leads the batting charge, even though he’s yet to hit top form. Friday could be potentially a big game for him, as it would for the rest of the side.”Yes, it was a huge thing for the boys, to know that they can compete and beat them,” Wright said. “India had about five to six players missing in that game, but still, you play against the team you’re up against on the day. We will be going in with no fear.”As with any Bangladesh team, there’s the pressure of living up to expectation, which Wright wants to shield his unit from. “The guys know there’s huge support for them back home,” he said. “I’ve tried to downplay that as much as possible, there’s enough pressure on these young fellows playing in the World Cup, so you don’t want to be worrying about what’s happening back home.”I, as the coach, try and take the pressure away from them and let them express themselves. I’ve to do that and let them play freely. If you do that, you’ll play good cricket. There’s pressure on them anyway, certainly from back home, from various sections of people, and we all understand that’s coming. But we’ll try and have a bit of fun on Friday.”As long as we put in our full effort, ‘theek acche.’ That’s the main goal. Enjoy the occasion, give it your best and hold your head high.”
