Celtic star who left in 2021 is now worth more than Matt O’Riley

Celtic went through the January transfer window without losing any of their key first-team players to European clubs, which should have come as a welcome relief to Brendan Rodgers.

The Northern Irish head coach rejoined the club for a second spell in Glasgow last summer and was hit with two blows as Jota and Carl Starfelt moved on to Al Ittihad and Celta Vigo in Saudi Arabia and Spain respectively.

Selling important stars is nothing new for the Hoops, of course, as the likes of Odsonne Edouard, Moussa Dembele, Virgil van Dijk, Fraser Forster, and Victor Wanyama have all been moved on to European sides over the years.

Carabao Cup winner Virgil van Dijk.

They were, however, able to retain the services of the likes of Matt O'Riley, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Cameron Carter-Vickers, among others, last month.

One star sale the club did once have a nightmare with was Ryan Christie's move to Bournemouth, as his value has soared – higher than O'Riley's – over the subsequent years.

How much Bournemouth paid for Ryan Christie

The Cherries swooped in to sign the Scotland international from Celtic in the summer of 2021 for a reported fee of £2.5m, as they aimed to win promotion from the Championship.

Sky Sports claimed that Scott Parker's side fought off competition from Premier League outfit Burnley to secure his services for the 2021/22 campaign and beyond.

Former Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie.

Bournemouth snapped the talented midfielder up after he had enjoyed an excellent spell with the Hoops as a versatile attacking option for the club.

Christie chipped in with 41 goals and 44 assists in 151 appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys, which shows that he provided quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

The former Inverness star spent the majority of his Celtic career in an attacking midfield position but was also deployed on the right and left flanks at times.

He was a regular starter for Neil Lennon during the 2020/21 campaign and caught the eye with five goals and nine assists in 26 Scottish Premiership starts.

As you can see in the table above, Christie maintained an impressive performance level in midfield for Celtic with his ability to score and create goals, whilst also being an efficient dribbler who could take opposition players on to push his team up the pitch.

His superb displays in the Scottish top-flight for the Hoops were enough to convince Burnley and Bournemouth to battle it out for his signature at the end of the campaign.

However, the Bhoys only received a fee of £2.5m for his services, as his contract was due to expire the following summer, and his value has soared since that move away from Parkhead.

Ryan Christie's current market value

At the time of writing (27/02/2024), FootballTransfers have placed his Expected Transfer Value (xTV) at a whopping €12.7m (£10.9m), which is significantly more than the £2.5m Celtic raked in for him.

Christie, who was hailed as "top-class" by Parker, has been a fantastic signing for the Cherries over the years. His first season with the club was a huge success as he played a pivotal role in their promotion to the Premier League.

Bournemouth midfielder Ryan Christie.

The Scottish whiz started 36 of their 46 Championship matches and produced three goals, eight assists, and ten 'big chances' created for his teammates.

He showcased his quality at the top end of the pitch with his ability to split open opposition defences to create opportunities for his fellow attackers.

Christie then featured in 32 Premier League matches for Gary O'Neil during the 2022/23 campaign as Bournemouth avoided relegation back down to the second tier.

This season, the 29-year-old gem has been in terrific form in the top-flight of English football and showcased his quality both in and out of possession.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed midfielder could be frustrated with his teammates as they have only rewarded him with two assists from the seven 'big chances' that he has created.

Christie also ranks first and second within the Bournemouth squad for tackles and interceptions per game respectively, which speaks to how impressive and important his defensive work has been in the Premier League this season.

Matt O'Riley's current market value

Meanwhile, current Celtic star O'Riley has an xTV of €12.2m (£10.4m) on FootballTransfers, which is €500k less than Christie's current value in England and further shows that the club had a mare with the sale of the Scotland international.

The Denmark international's fantastic form for the Scottish giants in the Premiership so far this season under Rodgers, and his impressive displays for Ange Postecoglou last term, illustrates why the Bournemouth star's higher value is particularly impressive.

The former Fulham prospect produced three goals and 12 assists in 38 league outings for the Australian coach during the 2022/23 campaign, as he showcased his creative quality on a regular basis by splitting open opposition defences to set his fellow attackers up week-in-week-out.

This time around, O'Riley has been a well-rounded attacking threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals from a midfield position, as you can see in the table below.

No Hoops player has scored as many league goals as the Danish magician this season, with Kyogo Furuhashi behind him on nine, and only Luis Palma (nine) has provided more assists.

These statistics show that the left-footed wizard has been a fantastic operator for Rodgers in the final third, as he has the ability to be a match-winner for the club with his attacking skills.

Celtic reportedly rejected a £10m offer from Leeds United in England last summer, and he is a player they may do well to keep hold of ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Hopefully, if they do decide to part ways with him, the Hoops will rake in more than £2.5m for the talented maestro and will not, as may be the case with Christie, watch on with regret as his value soars elsewhere.

Archer and Curran dismantle Australia to earn valuable lead

England earned a lead of 69 despite Steven Smith scoring 80 with Jofra Archer claiming 6 for 62 on the second day at The Oval

The Report by Andrew McGlashan13-Sep-2019If Australia want to take a series victory as well as retaining the Ashes they will have to do it the hard way after Jofra Archer claimed his second six-wicket haul, and Sam Curran enjoyed an eye-catching return to the side, to earn England a priceless 69-run lead despite another fine innings from Steven Smith. To no one’s surprise, Smith top-scored but this time fell for 80 – his lowest score of the series – when he was lbw to Chris Woakes, the moment when England probably believed they could end the innings with an advantage. While Smith was there, even with the tail, anything was possible and England would have feared the worst when Joe Root dropped him at slip on 66.Neither was it a quiet end to the day with Joe Denly, who was late to the ground on the second day after the birth of his daughter, dropped in the slips by Marcus Harris and against the final delivery Rory Burns – having already been clattered in the grille by Pat Cummins – was given lbw to a ball which DRS showed had pitched well outside leg stump. A day of solid batting – and that’s far from assured from either side in this series – and England will have a share of the series in their sights.Marnus Labuschagne continued in his role as Smith-lite but either side of that pair there were familiar problems for Australia with the openers again dispatched cheaply – David Warner with a hint of DRS controversy – and the middle-order failing to offer the support Smith needed. The major shift in the innings came after tea when Australia lost 4 for 27 – including the scalp of Smith – with Curran producing a terrific six-over spell of left-arm swing which accounted for Tim Paine and Cummins in consecutive deliveries. Archer then claimed his fifth wicket to halt a troublesome ninth-wicket stand, with a brilliant slower ball to remove Nathan Lyon, before a spectacular catch at gully by Burns rounded up Australia. It left Archer, who didn’t bowl his fastest but had excellent control, with 6 for 62 to follow his 6 for 45 at Headingley.England had resumed on 271 for 8 with Jos Buttler and Jack Leach taking their stand to 68 before the innings was wrapped up by Mitchell Marsh’s first five-wicket haul in Tests. If there had been a lot about the home side’s display that felt like groundhog day, the same could certainly be said when Australia came out to bat.Warner managed to get off the mark for the first time in four innings but didn’t go much further. It wasn’t Stuart Broad who removed him this time, instead a slash at a wide delivery from Archer which Ben Stokes, at second slip, was convinced had been edged and encouraged Root to review. The initial replays suggested daylight between bat and ball, but then a spike appeared on Ultra Edge. Warner appeared happy enough to walk off.Steven Smith looks pleased enough with life, but Ben Stokes doesn’t•Getty ImagesHarris has struggled since replacing Cameron Bancroft and was squared up from around the wicket by Archer, who claimed 2 for 7 off seven overs in his opening spell, with Stokes again in the action as he grabbed a low catch at second slip to leave Australia 14 for 2. That marked the next stage of the contest: Labuschagne and Smith. Either side of lunch it went Australia’s way, although Smith was more uncertain than previously in the series, particularly against Archer and the different angled presented by Curran to whom he twice padded up leaving the ball. Labuschagne played the ball very sweetly off his pads and collected 10 boundaries in his 48.It was Archer who sparked England early in the afternoon with a hostile spell to Labuschagne who took a painful blow on the right arm before being pinned lbw, a plan coming to fruition for Archer who had probed away for such a dismissal – similar to how he removed him in the second innings at Old Trafford. After tea he would strike again, having Marsh caught at long leg off a poorly controlled half-hearted pull following another series of short deliveries which had also seen a rare error from Smith when he top-edged short of deep square.Matthew Wade wanted to be positive but was beautifully set up by Curran who sent down a series of away swingers before bringing one back into the pads which Wade played across. That was just a prelude from Curran when, after tea, he produced trademark left-arm dismissals by slanting one across Paine then swinging one back into Cummins’ boot in a spell that would read 6-4-6-2. There is a feeling no one really knows what sort of cricketer Curran will become, and how to best fit him in an England Test side, but the bare facts are he has won six out of six Tests at home and played a key role in most of them. Before all that, Smith had moved to another half-century by depositing Leach over long-on – in the process moving beyond 700 runs for the series and into the top 20 of all time – but Curran should have had the most prized scalp to his name as well when Smith tried to upper cut a short delivery. The edge flew high towards Root, but Stokes started to go for the catch which may have disturbed the England captain and it burst through. For a short while it looked more likely that he would run out of partners than be dismissed, but the first ball of a new spell from Woakes brought the moment England have strived so hard for when Smith missed a straight one. This has been a series full of surprising moments and that was another.

Man Utd could have beaten Fulham by making this sub instead of McTominay

Manchester United suffered their tenth Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday evening against Fulham.

The match ended 2-1 for the visitors, as they picked up just their second away win of the entire season courtesy of a last-gasp effort from Alex Iwobi that simply stunned the Old Trafford faitfhul.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag before a Premier League game.

Erik ten Hag has come under immense scrutiny for his side’s vulnerability at the back, as they faced 17 shots throughout the clash.

Harry Maguire was United’s biggest attacking threat, which really does sum up how much they’re going to struggle without the injured Rasmus Hojlund, with everyone in attack struggling to impact the match.

Scott McTominay’s performance against Fulham

The Dutch boss has called upon Scott McTominay countless times already this season to scrape a goal and even three points at times.

The Scotland international scored twice in additional time against Brentford earlier on in the season, and only two weeks ago, he came off the bench to score the winner against Aston Villa.

In an attempt to bolster the attack, McTominay replaced Omari Forson – who was making his first start – just eight minutes after the break. However, he wasn’t exactly able to repeat his previous heroics.

In truth, the 27-year-old was extremely ineffective playing as almost a striker, where he was simply marked out of the game. Over the 46 minutes that he was on the field, the midfielder had a dismal 56% pass accuracy, 0.07 expected goals and assists, and just one shot, which should have been pulled back for one of the United players queuing up.

McTominay offered nothing yesterday, but there was one player who had a late cameo that should have been on the pitch much earlier, if not from the first minute.

Amad Diallo’s game versus Fulham in numbers

With the view of salvaging anything from the game, Ten Hag threw Amad Diallo onto the field in the 80th minute for Kobbie Mainoo, but the 21-year-old may just have been able to inspire his side to victory if he had been trusted to come on earlier instead of McTominay.

Instantly, the “top-class” winger, as he was previously described by scout Jacek Kulig, brought intensity to the field, showing the desire to get his team back in the contest.

Although he only played 19 minutes total, Diallo certainly did enough to make Ten Hag ponder including him in the starting XI against Nottingham Forest next week, and the table below shows a handful of his key statistics.

The Ivory Coast star was heavily involved in the play, boasting 22 touches, one more than McTominay, despite playing 27 fewer minutes. Diallo also showed great combination play, having an 81% pass accuracy rate, while attempting to provide a source of creativity through his dribbling.

The forward was also working extremely hard to regain control for his side in a vital part of the game, winning two tackles and three of his four ground duels.

To be honest, the former Sunderland star was handed an extremely difficult task to break down the Fulham low-block, which saw almost their full team camped in their own box, but he was instantly more influential than almost all of his teammates on the field.

O’Neil benches Lemina in predicted Wolves lineup vs Sheff Utd

The job Gary O’Neil is doing at Wolverhampton Wanderers this season is nothing short of remarkable, especially after losing his two best midfielders last summer.

Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes both departed Molineux, yet O’Neil adapted and has managed to bring out the best of the players he has at his disposal.

The Old Gold have recorded a Premier League double over Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, while also defeating Manchester City during the early stages of the campaign, and their recent form has been solid.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

A home tie against Sheffield United awaits the Midlands side tomorrow afternoon and considering the Blades are propping up the rest of the league, it represents an ideal opportunity for O’Neil to claim another three points.

With that in mind, here's a look at the potential Wolves starting XI that will take to the Molineux pitch tomorrow…

1 GK – Jose Sa

There won't be a change to the goalkeeper as Sa will retain his place in the starting XI.

The Portuguese shot-stopper has missed only two league matches this season and was even named as the captain against Spurs in the 2-1 win last weekend.

Across his 23 matches thus far, however, Sa has kept just three clean sheets and if it were not for the wonderful form of their attacking options, the club may be in a slightly more precarious situation.

2 CB – Max Kilman

Max Kilman

The captain has played every minute of every league match so far this season and has been a rock at the back for the club.

The 26-year-old is contracted to the Old Gold until 2028, but if he continues this current rich vein of form, then he may just start attracting attention from potential suitors, that’s for sure.

3 CB – Craig Dawson

The veteran centre-back has played 23 of the 25 league ties Wolves have played this term and against Spurs, he was in fine form.

Not only did he make ten clearances and block three shots, but Dawson won seven of his nine contested duels during the victory and this display was key to Wolves securing all three points.

4 CB – Toti

Like Dawson, Toti was also extremely solid against Spurs last week. He made ten clearances, four interceptions, two tackles and was not dribbled past once, showcasing his physical strength in one-on-one battles.

Toti has already made more league appearances this season than he did during the whole of the 2022/23 campaign, and he is slowly emerging as a key member of O’Neil’s side.

5 RM – Nelson Semedo

The 30-year-old had spent the previous few months playing in an unfamiliar role on the right-hand side of the midfield due to O’Neil utilising either a 3-5-2 or 3-4-2-1 formation.

His attacking talents have not exactly been on show, however, as he has registered just one goal and one assist in all competitions.

6 CM – Joao Gomes

Joao Gomes

The Brazilian enjoyed one of his finest games for the club last week as he scored a brace which proved to be decisive in the victory over Spurs.

He also made six tackles and four clearances as his defensive abilities were also on show, and he will retain his place against the Blades tomorrow afternoon.

7 CM – Tommy Doyle

Tommy Doyle

Mario Lemina enjoyed a decent game last weekend, yet he may have to make way in order for Tommy Doyle to start against Sheffield United.

The on-loan Manchester City starlet was hailed as “exceptional” by talent scout Jacek Kulig back in 2021 as he discussed the wealth of talent that City possessed in their youth sides.

The youngster has started just five Premier League matches this season, yet when he has featured, the 22-year-old has showcased his talents.

He holds an 86% pass success rate, while winning 56% of his total duels and losing possession just 5.6 per game and a tie against the bottom side in the league could be an ideal opportunity for him to come into the starting XI.

8 LM – Rayan Ait-Nouri

Rayan Ait-Nouri up against West Ham's Jarrod Bowen.

The Algerian did not enjoy the best of games against Spurs last week. He won only three of his ten contested ground duels during the encounter, along with succeeding with just one dribble attempt and losing possession a staggering 17 times.

Due to a lack of options on the left side of the midfield, however, Ait-Nouri will retain his spot in the starting XI and O’Neil will be hoping a tie against the Blades will allow him to perform better.

9 AM – Pedro Neto

Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

In front of the four-man midfield, O’Neil will deploy two attacking midfielders and one will be Neto, who has registered an impressive nine assists in the top flight already, despite playing only 16 games.

The 23-year-old grabbed an assist against Spurs and with the Blades’ defence conceding 65 goals in just 25 matches, he will certainly have his eye on scoring a goal or two tomorrow.

10 AM – Pablo Sarabia

Alongside Neto, Sarabia will be deployed, and the duo have the ability to cause plenty of chaos on Sunday afternoon.

The Spaniard has scored twice and chipped in with nine assists in all competitions, but he didn’t play in the reverse clash against the Blades back in November – although he must be unleashed tomorrow.

The 31-year-old made three key passes last week and missed a big chance, suggesting that with a bit better finishing, he may have added to his goal tally for the season.

A 2-1 win for Venezuela, Ecuador and teenage star Kendry Paez fell in their Copa America opener on Saturday. The 17-year-old attacking midfielder, who is set to join Premier League giants Chelsea in the summer of 2025, started for his nation and played 79 minutes.

Paez had a top performance for his nation, very nearly opening the scoring in the 21st minute. His first-time effort in the box was saved, though, and the rebound attempt by forward Enner Valencia ended up being their downfall.

The former West Ham United player missed his attempt at the ball, and was sent off after the studs of his boot collided with the chest of the defender.

Paez and co. kept playing, though. The youngster played a role in their opening goal before the halftime whistle, but two second half strikes from handed the opposition the victory.

Paez himself finished the match with an XG of .38 with one big chance missed. He completed 60% of his dribbles, had 40 touches and completed 15 of 20 total passes.

The Blues will pay $21.3m (€20m/£17.27m) for the 17-year-old next summer when he joins them on a permanent deal from Independiente Del Valle. He has been likened to a young Lionel Messi by many in South America.

ESPN pundit tells Ivan Toney to seal Arsenal move after transfer boost

An "underrated" star has been told to join Arsenal and make what would be the "perfect match" a reality, coming after a pretty encouraging admission this week.

Arsenal's quiet January transfer window

Despite rumoured interest in a new striker and midfielder, Mikel Arteta was forced to watch on as sporting director Edu decided not to take any action in January.

Edu considering Chelsea hijack to sign "world-class" star for Arsenal

The Gunners still have plans to sign a striker.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 6, 2024

The Gunners, despite Arteta claiming they have one of the Premier League's "thinnest" squads, were one of the division's most quiet teams when it came to both incomings and outgoings.

"We have one of the thinnest squads in the League, that's for sure," said the Spaniard (via Standard Sport).

"And when you talk about the numbers, especially in certain areas, we are really thin. It wasn't possible [to do any January deals]. And now we didn't have the capacity to improve the team in the way that we think we want to improve it, so we decided not to do something yet."

Perhaps the right deals were just not do-able in what is usually a very tricky window to navigate, and upsetting the balance of Arteta's squad could've been risky as they compete with Man City and Liverpool for their first league title in 20 years.

In any case, there are holes in the squad which need addressing at some point. Their lack of a potent number nine is a real topic of discussion and has been since the very beginning of 2023/2024. Arteta has just Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah as his senior striking options right now, which has led to Edu's widely reported interest in signing Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Arsenal are one of the main contenders to sign Toney, with Bees boss Thomas Frank even admitting this week that he is likely to be sold.

"It is relatively obvious that Ivan Toney will probably be sold this summer," said Frank to Tipsbladet (via The BBC).

"It can be 'expensive' to sell your best player, but conversely I also know that this summer he only has one year left on his contract with us. We also know what he is worth. I don't think there are many strikers in the world who are better than him right now."

Ivan Toney told to make "perfect" Arsenal move

In reaction to this, ESPN pundit Janusz Michallik has urged Toney to seal a move to Arsenal, calling it a "perfect match" for the striker who's been called "underrated" (Statman Dave).

"He’s a great number nine in terms of hold-up, he can assist, he can score. He’s great on set-pieces. His pace, his size, his stamina, just about everything. You tell me a player like that,” said Michallik.

“He takes Arsenal to the next level, he takes Manchester United to the next level. I don’t care if Hojlund’s there or not. We’ve talked about Real Madrid, how many players you need and all that. So all those three teams: Chelsea for sure. But yeah, I think if I’m Ivan Toney and I look at the projects where they currently are, and it’s my big move, maybe the only big move a player like Ivan Toney’s going to make, no doubt, in his mind and on Arsenal’s mind, this is a perfect match.”

Derbyshire collapse to 24 for 6 in pursuit of 150 as Foxes stay in quarter-final hunt

Leicestershire put themselves firmly in the chase for the Vitality Blast quarter finals when they thrashed Derbyshire by 55 runs at Derby. The unpredictable North Group sprung another surprise when the Falcons collapsed dramatically chasing what looked a modest target of 150.The Foxes had been held to 149 for 7 with Mark Cosgrove’s 38 the top score as Matt Critchley claimed 2 for 25 in four overs of legspin. But the Falcons pressed the self-destruct button, slumping to 28 for 6, and were bowled out for 94 with Colin Ackermann taking 3 for 9 and Gavin Griffiths 3 for 14.There were signs of what was to come when, after starting steadily, the Foxes began to unravel once they tried to accelerate on a used pitch with three wickets falling in five overs.Harry Swindells failed to clear mid-off when he tried to hit Ravi Rampaul over the top and although Arron Lilley swung Logan van Beek for six over long-on, only 43 runs came from the powerplay.Cosgrove drove Alex Hughes for consecutive fours but Lilley sliced a cut at Luis Reece to point and Cosgrove’s attempt to disrupt Critchley’s line only ended in the hands of deep mid-wicket.Harry Dearden lifted Hughes over deep square for six but then drove to long off and when Ackermann was well caught by Reece diving forward at backward square in the 15th over, the Foxes had slipped to 106 for 5.The Falcons bowled with discipline on a pitch where the ball was not coming on and, backed up by smart fielding, did not allow the Foxes to break free and only 72 came from the last 10 overs.Aadil Ali drove Hughes for six and Callum Parkinson hit the last two balls of the innings from Rampaul for four but the Foxes total seemed below par until the Falcons top order disintegrated in the powerplay.Luis Reece sliced to point after pulling a ball into his helmet and although Wayne Madsen swung a free hit from Dieter Klein for six, he top-edged a reverse sweep at Ackermann and was caught at short third man.It got even worse for the home side in the third over as Billy Godleman sliced Griffiths to third man and Leus du Plooy pulled the next ball into the hands of deep square leg.Former Fox Darren Stevens was run out by Ackermann’s direct hit from cover when he failed to ground his bat and when Hughes swung another short ball to deep mid-wicket, the Falcons were in free-fall.Fynn Hudson-Prentice drove Parkinson for six but the former Derbyshire spinner responded by yorking Matt Critchley and the only consolation for the Falcons was they passed their previous lowest T20 score of 72, against the Foxes six years ago.
