Liverpool looking to reunite Slot with former "leader" in first signing

A new era is officially about to start at Liverpool following Jurgen Klopp's emotional Anfield farewell, in which he had the Reds faithful singing Arne Slot's name. Now, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes could hand the Dutchman the perfect welcome gift.

Liverpool transfer news

It could be a busy few months for Liverpool as they settle into life under Slot and attempt to transition from a chapter full of success and familiarity under Klopp and into the unknown. With Edwards at the helm, however, the transfer headlines have already started, which has seen the likes of Johan Bakayoko linked.

It would be fitting to see a young winger arrive at the beginning of a new era, given that Sadio Mane similarly came in as one of Klopp's first signings, and Bakayoko certainly has similar potential.

That said, Edwards' first focus could yet be to add another midfielder and one that Slot is all too familiar with. According to Fotospor, Liverpool are eyeing a move to sign Orkun Kokcu from Benfica this summer. The box to box midfielder came through the Feyenoord ranks to play under Slot, before leaving for Portugal last summer.

Now, he could be on the move again and on his way to join his former boss at Anfield. It would be quite the welcome gift for the Dutchman to be reunited with such a player and one who would form quite the partnership with Alexis Mac Allister in the middle of the park.

When the summer transfer window swings open, Kokcu is certainly one to keep an eye on if Liverpool step up their interest.

Kokcu can form Mac Allister partnership

An all-action midfielder, Mac Allister still needs help pulling the strings for Liverpool and if he is to play an even bigger part next season then a player of Kokcu's player would be a vital addition. The fact that the 23-year-old has previously played under Slot as well would be a major bonus and should ease any potential settling in struggles, while his ability to play the six, eight and ten roles adds depth in multiple positions.

Kokcu's output is particularly impressive and something that, together with Mac Allister, would provide the Reds a needed boost if the likes of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz hit a period of struggle in front of goal, as they did at the back end of this season. Previously described as "leader" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, a move would also be coming at the perfect time for the 23-year-old Benfica midfielder.

That said, questions may arrive if another more central midfielder is targeted this summer, given that Dominik Szoboszlai, Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch all arrived last summer to join Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones in those roles ahead of Wataru Endo. Slot would suddenly be handed an instant selection headache.

Newcastle reach agreement on "incredible" £35,000-a-week signing for Howe

After a frustrating season which could still end with Europa League qualification, Newcastle United have turned their attention towards the transfer window to reportedly reach an agreement with their first signing of the summer.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have been forced to learn a harsh lesson in squad depth this season, as injuries mounted and Eddie Howe was left scratching his head for options. Things haven't got any better as the season has gone on, either, with Jamaal Lascelles' and Sven Botman's almost simultaneous ACL injuries summing Newcastle's injury problems up.

Newcastle defender Sven Botman.

Those injuries have at least made the transfer plan clear at St James' Park though, with defensive reinforcement a clear priority, which has already seen the likes of Tosin Adarabioyo linked with a move. The Fulham defender is set to leave the London club at the end of the season upon the expiry of his current contract. Becoming a free agent, it's now Newcastle who could swoop in to land a bargain deal. And that's not the only bargain they could land.

Newcastle join the race to sign "one of the best defenders in the world"

What a signing he could be for the Magpies.

ByHenry Jackson May 7, 2024

According to Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato, Newcastle have reached an agreement to sign Lloyd Kelly on a free deal, with his Bournemouth contract coming to an end this summer.

In a huge development since reports emerged of Newcastle's interest, those at St James' Park will only have to worry about Kelly's reported £35,000-a-week salary instead of negotiating a transfer fee with Bournemouth due to the defender's free agent status. In what could quickly become a true bargain deal, Newcastle look set to finally reinforce their backline.

"Incredible" Kelly can replace Burn

One standout attribute of Kelly's is instantly his versatility. The current Bournemouth man can play as both a central defender and as a left-back in a major boost for Howe and his side. As things stand, it is Dan Burn who often occupies that left-hand side, but after a season of struggle, it's clear that Kelly would be an ideal upgrade this summer.

It's no surprise when reflecting on those numbers that Kelly has earned significant praise during his time at Bournemouth, including from former manager Gary O'Neil.

O'Neil, impressed with the defender in the Cherries' shock victory over Liverpool last season, told the Bournemouth Echo: “I thought Lloyd was incredible. I think he had a 12-week ankle injury followed by a six-week calf injury.

"Didn't have much time in between, and then came back today having not trained much, to play left back against one of the best wingers in the world. I thought he showed everything, the potential he has to be a top defender. I thought it was a very, very impressive performance against a top attacker (Salah).”

Wednesday Convo: DeAndre Yedlin on life in Cincinnati, the hardest part of being traded from Inter Miami, USMNT eras

The defender opened up on the off-field difficulties of being traded and the experienced he's had so far

DeAndre Yedlin has experienced plenty in his career. At 31, he's now the veteran, which is wild for those who remember him going toe-to-toe with Belgium's Eden Hazard at the 2014 World Cup behind his pace and the irrational confidence of a 21-year-old.

This past winter, though, Yedlin experienced something new, something that no athlete is ever really prepared for: getting traded.

It's a phenomenon unique to sports. Teachers, construction workers and paralegals aren't suddenly shipped out of town for allocation money. Things change rapidly in sports and, for those part of those sudden changes, the only hope is that things work out okay.

They have for Yedlin, who says he's unexpectedly found a new home in Cincinnati. After leaving behind Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, Yedlin has adjusted well to life in his new city, one that he plans to call home for a long time. Even so, there's still some heartbreak there. There are still times he thinks about what was left behind.

For the Wednesday Convo, a weekly Q&A with central figures in the U.S. soccer scene, GOAL US caught up with Yedlin to talk about this winter's big trade, the lessons he's learned along the way and how he feels about those that compare eras of the U.S. men's national team.

USA Today SportsHow are you enjoying life in Cincinnati?

Yedlin: "Honestly, coming here, I had no clue what to expect. I knew about the team. I knew it was a good team, and they had great players. I knew the coaches, but, there's a lot bigger part of life than just the soccer part. What's it gonna be like living here? And honestly, it has been incredible from day one.

"I went in with no expectations. I did. I honestly had no clue what to expect. I'd only been here for national team games, where we stayed downtown. You don't get to get that taste of what a city is like. You don't get the feel, but, in coming here, it really has become like a second home. Obviously, I call Seattle my first home, but it really has become like a second home. There's so much for kids to do and one thing that it made me realize is that it really doesn't matter where you are. I think as long as you're with the people you love, and they're happy and you're happy, then the place is going to feel incredible.

"Hopefully, I can stay here longer. We'll see. I have a year left on my contract, and I think a year option after that. It's a place that I would love to stay. It really is. It's a great place."

AdvertisementGettyWhat's the hardest part about being traded?

DY: "Honestly, the thing that I was most sad about was to leave Drake [Callendar] and his wife, Kyra. Earlier, I think it was the year before, it was me, Drake Callender, and Aime Mabika, who's at Toronto right now. Aime got traded to Toronto, and that was really hard for both me and Drake, because we had created, like all three of us, this friendship group. Now it's just me and Drake, and then obviously my wife and Drake's wife are best friends as well. They'd be over at the house all the time. When we found out that Cincinnati could happen, bless my wife, that was the only thing she said: 'I just don't want to leave Kyra.'

" I think, if it was the younger me, then my mind would have gone to, 'Oh, what is everybody going to think about this move? What is the public going to think? How are they going to view me now? Am I not I'm not worthy of being here?'. That whole thing, but for me, it was just, man, it's unfortunate that I have to say goodbye to this guy and his wife."

AAYou've had a lot of different stops in your career with different cities and cultures. What has that been like?

DY: "Seattle to London was an interesting one, because Seattle's a big city, but it's not London, you know? I'd always wanted to live, or I thought I did, in a big city. So I get to London it really is a big city and that part of it was tough for me. I thought I was going to be able to navigate it better than I was. There's a lot going on, a lot to get into, especially at a young age. I'm making a lot more than I ever had. Those first couple of months, especially on top of not really playing, I was definitely figuring stuff out.

"When I moved to Sunderland, basically same thing with Newcastle, they're not too far apart from each other, but I felt when I moved up north, I felt a little bit more at home. I think it was maybe the calmness of the city. There's a bit more nature out there. I'm a huge nature guy. I love being out in nature. When I'm in nature, I just feel grounded and balanced, so I felt a lot more comfortable up there. And then, obviously, it helps that, when I was with Rafa Benitez [at Newcastle], I was playing. We were doing really well, so I'm sure that obviously helped the comfort level.

"My daughter was born in Istanbul, so as far as raising a family for me, that was a new start. It wasn't, for me, the best place for our situation and that's why, ultimately, we ended up heading back to Miami, but it's an unbelievable place. I need to visit and bring my daughter back.

"The culture there is unmatched. I remember my favorite experience in Turkey was going to a place called Cappadocia, which was, back when the Ottoman Empire in rule, it ended up being where there were small groups of Christians, and that was not the norm there in that part of the country. They would hide in these caves that they built in these rocks and the caves are still there. The paintings on the wall are there for all to see. If you haven't been, it's an unbelievable place."

GettyYou've played with USMNT legends and this generation of rising stars. How do you compare them?

"I like using real-life examples a lot. Am I right now the same person as I was when I was 21? No, I'm different. It doesn't mean I'm better or I'm worse, but I'm just a different person. They're different generations. I don't want to say one's better, one's worse. They're just different. They're different generations, different experiences, different times, different situations, different society. There are a lot of things that are just different about it.

"One of the things about sports, which you can't really get away from because it is a competitive sport, but it's just this nonstop comparing. Michael Jordan, LeBron, Kobe, but, like, let's just enjoy the greatness of of all of them. Messi, Ronaldo, let's just enjoy the greatness of both. Why does it always have to be an argument about who's better and who's worse? At the end of the day, you're not going to change somebody's mind anyway. If someone believes something, I'm not going to sit here and say, 'Oh, Jordan was better than LeBron', and somebody now doesn't believe LeBron is better. I'm not going say 'Oh, Jordan had this many rings' and that'll change their mind. It's just a means to get into another argument with somebody or a debate, which we've all had plenty going around.

"I think debates are healthy at times, there are certain things where you just got to sit back and say, 'I'm just going to enjoy the greatness of both of these eras or these three eras, and that's it'. Going back to what I said, it's just a different time. There's not really a way to compare different coaches or different players. It's a different time in our society with social media, which plays a role. There are different opportunities now for players going over to Europe that probably weren't there before. All of these things play a hand in it."

Howe must drop Anderson and unleash "phenomenal" Newcastle star

Newcastle United face a battle to secure sixth place in the Premier League table. Not only will they have to win their match against Brentford, but hope Chelsea lose against AFC Bournemouth in order to snatch a top six spot.

Tough? Yes. Impossible? Absolutely not. Eddie Howe will be urging his men for one final push in what has been a season filled with injuries and a lack of any real consistency.

Following the midweek defeat to Manchester United, could the Englishman perhaps change things up for the final game of the season? Especially as substitute Joelinton enjoyed a solid cameo appearance from the bench.

Joelinton’s statistics against Manchester United

Joelinton came on with just under 30 minutes remaining in the tie for the ineffective Elliot Anderson, who didn’t enjoy his finest game for the Magpies.

Indeed, Anderson took just 29 touches during his spell on the pitch, while also losing possession six times and winning just two of his five contested duels.

This should give Howe licence to ditch the youngster this afternoon and unleash Joelinton in midfield.

The 27-year-old not only made one key pass and created a big chance, but also managed to take three shots in total while winning seven of his 11 duels contested, indicating how impressive a display it was despite playing only 28 minutes.

With a must-win tie against Brentford coming up this afternoon, surely it is time for the Brazilian to be unleashed in the starting XI.

Joelinton’s stats for Newcastle this season

The £150k-per-week star has made 26 appearances for the Magpies this term as injury issues have restricted his game time, most notably a groin problem which required surgery.

Despite his lack of action, Joelinton has still scored three goals and registered four assists, clearly making his mark whenever he gets the chance.

Alongside his goal involvements, the midfielder has also created four big chances, averages 1.1 key passes per game and succeeded with 0.9 dribbles per game – a success rate of 61% – to prove that he certainly adds an extra attacking threat when fit.

Additionally, Joelinton also ranks in the top 5% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 (3) when compared to positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues, while also ranking in the top 11% for successful take-ons per 90 (1.33), further evidence of the danger he possesses in the final third.

Journalist Thomas Hammond lauded the Brazilian as “phenomenal” in 2023, and it is clear when he is fit and firing, the 27-year-old is a key member of Howe’s starting XI.

Against Brentford, every player will need to be at their very best in order to secure all three points and give the club a chance of securing sixth place in the top flight.

It might not secure qualification for the Champions League, but featuring in Europe next season is extremely important for Howe and his players as they look to end a near 60-year wait for a major trophy.

Fabrizio Romano shares what happens next as West Ham agree Lopetegui deal

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed the latest on West Ham's move for Julen Lopetegui, and has explained what is now likely to happen after a verbal agreement was reached over the weekend.

West Ham searching for new boss

Another thrashing for David Moyes' side away from home, this time against Chelsea, saw any small lingering hope of his time at the London Stadium being extended quickly extinguished, and it has become clear that the Hammers are in desperate need of new blood ahead of the next Premier League campaign.

The 70 goals conceded this season is a record for any team Moyes has managed, while performances have been poor and they seem set to miss out on European football next season.

The Hammers had been eyeing up Ruben Amorim, and had held face to face talks with the Sporting boss, for which he subsequently apologised. But, after winning the Portuguese title with Sporting on Sunday, he revealed that he wasn't going to be swapping Lisbon for London or anywhere this summer.

"I'm staying at Sporting. I'm under contract and it's a special moment for me, for the club", he explained. "Now we will try to win the third title together. Let's try to make it happen."

Lopetegui deal agreed – Romano

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has today revealed that ex-Wolves and Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui has "agreed terms" with the Hammers to take charge this summer.

The pair had been locked in talks, and it had seemed like a losing battle at one point, only for AC Milan to decide to abandon their pursuit of the Spaniard, leaving the London side with a free run at their man.

With the agreement now in place, they will proceed to "formal stages", which involves the "details being finalised" and only then the "contracts will be signed", provided that there is no 11th hour change of heart from either party.

Lopetegui has been out of management since he left Wolves at the beginning of the season over a financial dispute, but appears to have won over the West Ham hierarchy, who are ready to now place their faith in the Spanish coach.

He will have significant work to do at the London Stadium, though there is undoubtedly talent available to him in the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Paqueta and Edson Alvarez.

Mohammed Kudus celebrates for West Ham

The home fans will demand that their style of football changes, with Moyes coming under fire as much for the performances of his side as the results across the last 12 months. For now though, it appears that the West Ham manager search is finally reaching it's conclusion.

Tottenham have now reached agreement to sign attacking starlet for Ange

Tottenham have reached an agreement to sign a young attacker for manager Ange Postecoglou, with a deal done and Spurs even beating multiple Premier League rivals in the race for his signature.

Postecoglou pleads for "drastic" change at Spurs

The Lilywhites head coach, over the course of his debut campaign in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium dugout, has been vocal about his aim to transform the club during his tenure.

Most recently, Postecoglou has pleaded for "drastic" change as we approach the summer transfer window, which opens on June 14. The Australian suggested a few squad members could be to make way, with his Spurs project not for everyone.

"We need change. Change has to happen," Postecoglou said. "You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that. It’s just not going to happen.

"We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about. It’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey."

Away from the senior eleven, Postecoglou also admitted to his dream of making Tottenham a preferred destination for some of Europe's most exciting young talents.

“We’re giving young players an opportunity," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's appeal to rising stars. "Destiny, Pape and Micky, all guys in their early 20s who have already played significant roles.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou

“We’re building a team. From our perspective, it’s pleasing and hopefully we become a club which is a preferred destination for talented young players. There aren’t too many hidden gems around — everyone knows who the talents are. Hopefully our point of difference, I’ve always felt your football is your biggest selling point, beyond anything else."

Tottenham sealed a deal to sign Swedish sensation Lucas Bergvall in January, adding to their exciting young squad, with Spurs also signing Croatian wonderkid Luka Vuskovic at the start of the season.

Reports suggest technical director Johan Lange and chairman Daniel Levy are looking to bring in even more promising young talent, with news emerging this week that another starlet is set to join the likes of Bergvall and Vuskovic.

Tottenham reach agreement to sign George Feeney for Postecoglou

According to Football Insider and journalist Pete O'Rourke, Tottenham have agreed a deal to sign young Glentoran striker George Feeney.

The 16-year-old, who was being chased by "multiple" Premier League sides alongside Spurs, appears set to make a move to north London as Postecoglou's side win the race for his signature.

O'Rourke writes that Feeney, who broke into Glentoran's first team this season with one goal in 10 appearances, will complete a Tottenham transfer as Levy and co are successful in luring the Northern Irishman to N17.

These two pilots are an important step in testing the Government guidance and ensuring we can safely open our grounds again.”The government is officially aiming for fans to be able to return to stadiums from October 1, but Surrey’s chief executive Richard Gould has suggested that date represents a target to be beaten.Speaking on Sunday during the Oval trial match, Gould also warned that the current social-distancing requirements that limit clubs to 30% capacity within any given area of seating is not sustainable in the long term.”We need to be back to normal next summer,” Gould said. “If we’re not back to normal next summer, the structure, not just of our sports but all sports will have to significantly change.”If we don’t get crowds back in at some stage then many more clubs will become part-time organisations and I just don’t think we can afford that as a sport or as a country in terms of cultural output.”
