FSG have Liverpool in pole position to possibly replace VVD with free deal

With Virgil van Dijk yet to sign a new contract at the club, FSG reportedly have Liverpool in pole position to sign a cheap option who could replace Arne Slot's captain next summer.

Liverpool transfer news

On the pitch, things couldn't be better for Liverpool at the start of Slot's tenure. They've won three from three in the Premier League, kept three clean sheets and shoved Manchester United to one side on their manager's Old Trafford debut. Off the pitch, however, things are slightly less smooth sailing amid contract concerns.

As of right now, Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold will all walk away for free next summer upon the expiration of their current deals. Now, there's a strong argument to be made that those three aforementioned stars stand tall as Liverpool's best players, so of course there's no limit to the damage that their simultaneous exits would do to Slot's side.

The ball, however, seems very much in Liverpool's court, especially when it comes to Salah and Van Dijk. The former revealed to Sky Sports after the Reds thrashed Manchester United and he scored another goal against their bitter rivals that he is yet to be approached about a new contract. Meanwhile, Van Dijk is in a similar position and has reiterated his desire to stay put.

Yet, still, a new contract doesn't seem to be on the table and reports suggest that the Reds could land a bargain replacement for Van Dijk. According to Bild via Sport Witness, FSG have Liverpool in pole position to sign Jonathan Tah on a free deal ahead of interest from Manchester United next summer.

The Bayer Leverkusen centre-back was linked with a summer switch to Bayern Munich only to stay put under Xabi Alonso, and is now likely see out the remainder of his contract before moving somewhere for free in 2025, with his preference a move to England.

"Strong" Tah would be a bargain deal

Replacing Van Dijk will be mission impossible for Liverpool whether they're forced to do so next summer or in years to come. But turning to experience in Tah would likely at least ease the blow caused by the Dutchman's exit, albeit without necessarily replacing his full quality. The German, 28 years old, enjoyed the most successful season of his career last time out, helping Leverkusen to an invincible title and cup double in historic fashion.

Even in his best season, Tah's numbers compared to Van Dijk's highlight just how difficult it will be for Liverpool to replace their imperious captain, especially if it's in the next year.

Nonetheless, Tah is a player who's always caught the eye in Germany, earning the praise of former national team manager Joachim Low, who said via the Bundesliga's official website after he handed the defender his first call-up: "He's a young player with a lot of potential. He's physically strong and very quick. Everything is possible."

DPL 2021: Complaint filed against Sabbir Rahman for alleged racial abuse and stone throwing

Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club lodge the complaint for apparent offences against their player Elias Sunny; Rahman denies allegations

Mohammad Isam16-Jun-2021Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club has lodged a complaint against Legends of Rupganj player Sabbir Rahman for racially abusing and throwing stones at their player Elias Sunny. The alleged incident took place during the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) T20 match between Dhanmondi and Old DOHS Sports Club at the BKSP 3 ground in Dhaka on Wednesday.Rahman, who had a match lined up against Partex Sporting Club starting later in the day at the BKSP 4 ground, allegedly abused Sunny, who was on the field, and threw stones at him shortly after arriving at the sporting complex.Play was stopped for a few minutes when Sunny, fielding at the time, informed the on-field umpires Habibur Rahman and Mozahiduzzaman about the incident. After the match, Dhanmondi wrote a letter to the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) – the BCB committee that oversees club cricket in Dhaka – requesting disciplinary action.”[Sabbir Rahman] used abusive and racially discriminate language against Sunny. As a professional cricketer, such behaviour is not only indecent but also a punishable offense,” the letter said. “In this case, you are specially requested to take disciplinary action against Sabbir Rahman.”Sunny said that Rahman’s behaviour was not an isolated one. He said it had started earlier in the week when Dhanmondi played Rupganj.”Sabbir started abusing me when I was batting against Rupganj on June 13,” Sunny told ESPNcricinfo. “I asked him thrice whether he himself understood what he was saying, but he kept repeating it. I got angry, after which the umpires had to separate us. But he kept calling me (referring to his skin colour) repeatedly from the outfield. We won the match so I didn’t react too much.”During today’s match, when we were fielding, Rupganj’s bus had arrived near the BKSP 3 ground. He started teasing me with the same . I didn’t react at first. But shortly afterwards, he threw a stone at me. I maintained the protocol by telling the umpires. Play was stopped for a while. I also spoke to the match referee.”Speaking to the , Rahman denied that he had used a racial slur, adding, “There is no question of throwing a stone. Is it easy to throw stones? Why would I do something like that? He is my senior.”The CCDM, which will hold a hearing on the incident, has to investigate the matter since Rahman was technically an outsider or bystander during the Dhanmondi-Old DOHS game. If the match officials of the Dhanmondi game also report Rahman, it would be used as evidence against him.Rahman has a long record of disciplinary breaches. He received a six-month ban for abusing a fan on social media (that was later reduced by one month) in 2018. It came a few months after his central contract was revoked after he physically assaulted a fan during a first-class match in late 2017. During the 2016 BPL, the BCB fined him 30% of his BPL contract for “serious off-field disciplinary breaches”.

Mbappe has had a difficult start to his journey at Real Madrid since completing his dream move to the Spanish giants from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer. The French forward, however, confirmed his recent return to form with a stunning opening goal in Los Blancos' 4-2 win over Sevilla on Sunday in their final match of 2024.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With the France captain now slowly adjusting to life in Spain, his colleagues have reportedly come up with a new nickname for the attacker and now call him "Mbappepinazo" in the dressing room, according to Defensa Central. The name refers to the 25-year-old's ability to fire goals from outside the box with powerful and precise shots.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Despite a slow start at his new club, Mbappe has managed to score 13 goals across all competitions and 10 in La Liga. He has also provided three assists overall in 23 appearances. In December, he has scored five goals in six games in La Liga and Champions League action.

    WHAT NEXT FOR REAL MADRID?

Carlo Ancelotti's side will be back in action after the short winter break on January 3 as they take on Valencia in La Liga away from home.

After Felix: Chelsea in the race for the "next Eden Hazard"

Chelsea completed their tenth signing of the summer recently by securing a deal to bring Joao Felix to Stamford Bridge, with the former loanee returning to the club on a permanent deal from Atletico Madrid.

This took Enzo Maresca’s spending over the £200m mark this summer. The question now is, will there be any more arrivals before the transfer window slams shut on Friday evening?

Chelsea eyeing move for Premier League outcast

According to TEAMtalk, Jadon Sancho still has an uncertain future at Old Trafford, having been left out of the squad to face Brighton and Hove Albion in their second Premier League tie of the season.

Jadon Sancho for Borussia Dortmund

Juventus are seemingly interested in the United winger, but the report also states that Chelsea are looking to bring him to London, as they could be close to selling Noni Madueke during the window.

No talks have been held between the Blues and United, however, but if Maresca wants to secure his services, he had best start acting swiftly.

The £250k-per-week winger has endured a torrid time of it in Manchester since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021. Could a move south help him return to the form he showcased with Dortmund?

Jadon Sancho’s season in numbers

Having made just three substitute appearances under Erik ten Hag last term, Sancho re-signed for Dortmund on a six-month loan deal, picking up where he left off in Germany.

In 21 matches for the Bundesliga side, the Englishman scored three goals while registering three assists, helping the club reach their first Champions League final in 11 years, although they lost to Real Madrid.

Among his teammates, Sancho ranked second in the squad for key passes per game (1.8) in the top flight, along with ranking first for successful dribbles per game (2.6), as he underlined his class. Not bad for someone who had played just 14 league matches.

Could he follow in the footsteps of a former Chelsea icon, however? As Sancho was previously hailed as “the next Eden Hazard” back in 2020 by former Liverpool star Steve Nicol.

While his form has deserted him since moving to the Premier League with United, his brief stint back with Dortmund proves there is still a potentially world-class player there, he just needs the right environment.

Hazard made 352 appearances for the Blues in seven years, scoring 110 goals and grabbing 85 assists during that time. Sancho may not reach those sorts of levels should he move to Chelsea, but if given a free role on the left wing, he could offer a dangerous threat going forward.

Indeed, when compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues, Sancho ranks in the top 4% for successful take-ons per 90 (3.63) over the previous 365 days.

This clearly showcases how good he is at dribbling and taking on opposition defenders, something which made him stand out so well at Dortmund.

Maresca may be taking a big gamble on signing the 24-year-old, but if it pays off, it could be a wonderful signing, no doubt about it.

Man City open to signing "world class" ace with 44 Premier League goals

Manchester City are said to be open to completing the signing of a "world-class" player with 44 Premier League goals to his name, according to a fresh transfer update.

Man City transfer news

Pep Guardiola's side got their title defence off to a perfect start on Sunday afternoon, picking up a hard-earned but deserved 2-0 win away to Chelsea. Erling Haaland opened the scoring and Mateo Kovacic fired home against his former club, in an early warning shot to their rivals at the top of the table.

Savinho was involved on his league debut for the reigning champions, impressing before picking up an injury before half-time, but the Brazilian has been City's only signing of genuine note during the summer transfer window. That's not to say that others aren't being linked with moves to the Etihad in the coming weeks, though, including Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo.

The 23-year-old scored in his side's opening La Liga fixture against Real Mallorca on Sunday evening, but couldn't prevent them from drawing 1-1, and is seen as a potentially ideal replacement for the departed Julian Alvarez.

Meanwhile, City are also believed to be close to striking a deal for young attacker Divin Mubama, who was most recently at West Ham. The England Under-20 international would be viewed as one for the future, also increasing the club's homegrown quota.

Man City open to stunning move for "world-class" ace

According to a massive claim from Sport [via Sport Witness], Manchester City are open to the idea of re-signing former hero Ilkay Gundogan this summer, in what would be a shock transfer. The German has reportedly asked to leave current club Barcelona and City are not ruling out the idea of bringing him back to the Etihad before the current transfer window reaches its conclusion.

This would be a stunning capture by City, in terms of its surprising nature, considering few have expected to see him return to the club. At 33, his best days are behind him, but he does still have plenty to offer as a squad player, possessing vast experience and a winning mentality.

Emre Can has hailed his Germany teammate as "world class" in the recent past, while Guardiola absolutely adores him as a player: "He’s so intelligent Gundo, so clever and competitive. Under pressure, he handles it without a problem. He’s one of the best players I ever trained in my career in terms of the whole package. He's top, top class."

While some may baulk at the claim, City's squad depth is actually lacking a little this season, so Gundogan could bolster Guardiola's options, already knowing the club inside out and winning so many trophies during his time there.

Whether a move actually materialises this summer remains to be seen, but there is definite sense in bringing the 44-goal former Premier League hero back for a short-term stint, and the move could well appeal to him after a relatively average spell at Barca.

Grace Scrivens seals Storm's fate as Sunrisers ease to victory

Sunrisers 133 for 3 (Scrivens 34*) beat Western Storm 129 for 6 (Wraith 36*) by seven wicketsGrace Scrivens top-scored with an unbeaten 34 to guide Sunrisers to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Western Storm in Group B of the Charlotte Edwards Cup at Taunton.Set 130 to win in 20 overs, the visitors reached their target with 14 deliveries to spare to register their first success since their formation in 2019.Put into bat, Storm never fully recovered from the loss of early wickets and had to settle for a below-par 129 for 6, Nat Wraith and Sophie Luff making 36 and 31 respectively. The pick of the Sunrisers bowlers, Sonali Patel claimed 2 for 26, while Katie Wolfe, Kelly Castle and Scrivens all weighed in with a wicket apiece.Defeat was a chastening experience for a Storm side deprived of England stars Heather Knight and Anya Shrubsole, and the 2019 champions have now suffered four straight defeats in all competitions.Former Storm players Naomi Dattani and Alice Macleod gave Sunrisers’ reply the perfect start, adding 39 inside six overs. Both were out driving, Dattani for a 21-ball 22 and Macleod for 13. Building upon the solid foundations afforded them by the openers, the third wicket pair of Scrivens and Mady Villers combined deft placement and quick running between the wickets to stage a crucial stand of 45 in eight overs.Danielle Gibson clean bowled Villiers for 36 with an in-swinging yorker to make Sunrisers think again, but Scrivens then set the tempo in an unbeaten alliance of 38 with Amara Carr, who struck the winning boundary in making 18 not out. Demonstrating a maturity beyond her years, Scrivens made 34 from 35 balls and helped herself to a brace of fours and a six.Storm opened their innings brightly enough, but then succumbed to a clatter of wickets as they were reduced to 49-5 inside 12 overs. Patel was rewarded for bowling a full length when removing Fi Morris and Gibson with successive deliveries in the fifth over. Panic appeared to have set in when Georgia Hennessy was run out in a mix-up with Luff, who sent her back and watched her depart for 18.George and Alex Griffiths then came and went with indecent haste, both dismissed in single figures attempting to play across the line, as Sunrisers took control. Relief for the hosts came in the form of a restorative stand of 42 in 5.2 overs between Luff and Wraith, who found the gaps regularly enough to apply pressure for the first time.Lured onto the front foot, Luff was stumped by Carr when going well, after which Wraith struck a two sixes and shared in an unbroken alliance of 36 with Lauren Parfitt, who contributed 15 not out. Storm finished strongly, but it proved too little too late.

100% dribbles, 94% passes: Liverpool ace has just given Slot a big headache

Arne Slot’s Liverpool put on a show against West Ham, scoring five goals and beating the Hammers 5-1 at Anfield. Slot’s side created six big chances, kept 61% possession, and took a total of 21 shots in the game.

Liverpool went 1-0 down in the first half, with Jarrel Quansah putting one in his own net, before Diogo Jota levelled it up in the 25th minute, to go in 1-1 at the break.

Liverpool star Diogo Jota.

But the Reds came bundling out the gates in the second half, scoring four goals, Jota grabbing one more, and Mohamed Salah scoring the third, before Cody Gakpo grabbed a late brace to make it 5-1.

Cody Gakpo's performance in numbers

Gakpo put in a man of the match display in Liverpool’s 5-1 win over the Hammers, scoring two goals, providing three key passes, and completing two out of two successful dribbles.

The Dutch forward started in his favoured left-wing position, having been used in a multitude of positions since joining the Reds, including upfront.

The 25-year-old was electric throughout the clash, earning an 8/10 match rating from GOAL’s Mark Doyle who described it as a ‘menacing’ display. Jamie Carragher was another to hail his performance, commentating on Sky Sports the former defender stated: “He’s done really well. This is Liverpool’s back-up left winger, it just shows you the quality they have in reserve.”

In the process, he managed six shots in the game, four on target, one off target, and one being blocked, whilst he also completed three out of three long balls, one out of three crosses, and made 94% of his passes during the game (30/32).

Playing from the left, it allows Gakpo to drift inside from wide areas, receiving the ball, combining with midfielders/the striker, and getting shots off on his deadly right foot, something he showed time and time again at Euro 2024, cutting in from the left for the Netherlands, when he scored three goals in his six games at the competition.

These two goals were the attacker’s first of the season for Slot’s side, having only played 100 minutes of Premier League football so far in five games, and this is largely down to the form of Luis Diaz.

However, Gakpo has made his case to start the next game, after his stellar performance against the Hammers.

Should Gakpo or Diaz start?

Diaz has had a great start to the new campaign, scoring five goals and providing one assist in his five Premier League appearances so far (361 minutes played).

Slot tends to start with Salah on the right wing, and has opted for Diogo Jota upfront over Darwin Nunez in recent weeks, leaving the left-wing spot for one of Diaz or Gakpo, and the Colombian has come out on top so far, becoming one of Slot’s main men early in the season.

The two players offer different traits from the left wing, with Diaz being more of a touchline winger, who works hard for the team on both ends of the ball, whilst creating for himself and his teammates. He has also added huge goal threat this season, scoring 1.19 goals per 90 minutes, making himself virtually undroppable at this stage.

However, Gakpo being a high-volume shooter, and a specialist cutting inside on his lethal right boot, can also add a huge attacking threat to this Liverpool side, and whilst he doesn’t add the same work rate out of possession as the South American, he does add a slightly more creative passing range, shown by his 0.28 assists and 2.63 key passes per 90.

Cody Gakpo for Liverpool.

Gakpo has made his case for the next Premier League game, and whilst it is likely Diaz will start, Slot definitely has a selection headache brewing, with both his left-wingers showing some fine form in recent games.

Spurs convinced they can agree deal for "intelligent" £29m priority target

With the January transfer window a matter of months away, Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly convinced that they can reach an agreement to sign their winter priority target for Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham transfer news

Spurs left it late to spend big in the summer but spend big, they did as Dominic Solanke arrived with the task of finally replacing Harry Kane in North London. The former Bournemouth forward arrived alongside the likes of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, as the Lilywhites handed Postecoglou one major improvement and two future stars.

Those deals are yet to pay dividends, however, in a frustrating start to the season for those in North London, summed up by their 1-0 defeat against rivals Arsenal last time out in the Premier League. Meanwhile, matters would have become worse had it not been for Brennan Johnson’s late winner to knock Coventry City out of the Carabao Cup and help Spurs avoid a shock exit.

Their worrying start sparks the question as to whether Daniel Levy needs to hand Spurs some further reinforcements and it’s a question that looks set to receive an answer in the January transfer window.

According to reports in Spain, Tottenham are now convinced that they’ll agree a deal to sign Javi Guerra in January, with the Valencia midfielder their priority in the winter window.

Tottenham plotting January deal to sign "magical" £13m in-demand talent

He’s a man in demand.

ByTom Cunningham Sep 19, 2024

That confidence comes despite the fact that negotiations are reportedly set to be long-winded amid Spurs’ reluctance to meet Valencia’s €35m (£29m) price tag in the coming months. Still just 21 years old, Guerra is a standout in what has otherwise been a disappointing Valencia side in the last year or so, with the La Liga side sitting bottom of Spain’s top flight after five games.

"Intelligent" Guerra can become perfect Gray partner

By signing Guerra, Spurs would suddenly have two future stars at the heart of their midfield for years to come with Gray’s natural position in the middle of the park, rather than the full-back role that he so often found himself in at Leeds United. Whilst things may look bleak so far this season in North London, Spurs do at least deserve credit for building towards the future as part of their project under Postecoglou.

Described as an “intelligent” midfielder by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig, Guerra may well emerge to make a crucial difference for Spurs in the January transfer window.

As January approaches, Valencia’s position will be one to keep an eye on too. Given that they currently sit bottom of La Liga, it will be interesting to see how their survival prospects may affect negotiations to hand Spurs a cheaper deal. Of course, however, it remains to be seen just how negotiations go as the Lilywhites prepare an offer.

Harry Kane vs Robert Lewandowski: Who is better? Bayern Munich star that played with both asked to pick between prolific England & Poland international strikers

Poland international Lewandowski, who is now at Barcelona, hit 344 goals for Bayern through 375 appearances between 2014 and 2022. England captain Kane moved to the Allianz Arena and inherited the No.9 shirt in 2023 – with his impressive record in Germany delivering 64 goals in 65 games.

    WHAT COMAN SAID

France international Coman has told the , presented by Qatar Airways, of whether Kane’s ability has come as any surprise to those in Munich: “Yes and no. The thing is you know sometimes between players you talk and everything and often before we had a conversation, when we had Lewandowski, and people were talking about Harry Kane.

“I knew he was good but the only time I played with him, against him was against Tottenham, and it was no match! So then I couldn't even see his quality but when we play against him in the World Cup against England he did good. He missed one penalty, but in the game, I think it's the first time that I realised like how good he can be. Then when you have the player in training and every day you know, you see everything. Then you really see everything and then I was like, ‘yeah he's there’.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

When charged with the task of comparing Kane and Lewandowski, Coman said: “They are pretty similar, but I would say Harry has a bit more impact in the game. [He’s] in the game building, while Lewy is really a box striker. [He] can also really keep the ball good and everything, but I would say Harry can really drop and can play almost like as a 10 or midfielder, brings the ball up sometimes so obviously sometimes he's less in the box….

“He has more of this capacity while Lewandowski can drop also a little bit, but he has to be in the box, so he cannot drop as much as Harry. I would say this is the big difference. In the box they are pretty similar even though I think Lewandowski is a bit more like moving good or killer in the box, but then Harry has this distance shot that Lewandowski has, but less. Harry is really good outside of the box, outside he is really dangerous as well.

“I think they both are pretty similar, but both have qualities that the other one have also but a bit less. That's why I think overall it's like two players that we can put at the highest striker of those last couple of years. I won't say one is better. Because as I told you I think in what Lewandowski is better, Harry is also really good [and] in what Harry is better Lewandowski is also really good.”
