– Eu joguei pouco aqui no Brasil, construí minha carreira lá fora praticamente.

Deandra Dottin stuns South Africa in Super Over finish

Khaka five-for pushed the game into overtime, and that’s when the WI powerhouse hit 19 runs in five balls

Firdose Moonda31-Jan-2022
West Indies Women won the one-over eliminator
Deandra Dottin’s career-best 150* on Friday could not beat the rain but her 19 off five balls in the Super Over sealed a rain-affect second ODI against South Africa. The main event was reduced to 41 overs a side and both teams were bowled out for 160 before Dottin and Hayley Matthews starred in a record Super Over of 25 without loss against Shabnim Ismail. South Africa’s Chloe Tryon and Tazmin Brits got off to a good start with 15 runs off the first four balls off Matthews, but managed only two off the last two to concede the match.Dottin was at her destructive best in the match proper, where she top-scored with 37, and especially in the Super Over. She swiped a full toss to mid-wicket for two to start off, then moved across her stumps to ramp Ismail for four, and then got down on one knee to drive her over long-on for six. She took three off the last ball she faced leaving Matthews one ball that she sent over the leg side for another six. When Deandra decides to bat, it’s quite difficult to have a plan,” South Africa’s captain Suné Luus conceded. “You can try and contain her on one side but she is a batter with a lot of experience and power.”And South Africa were unable to match that skill. With Lizelle Lee out of the series as she recovers from Covid-19, South Africa chose to use Tazmin Brits and Chloe Tryon, who started the reply with a six over mid-wicket. She scrambled through for one on the ball after before Brits hit Matthews for successive fours. South Africa needed 10 runs off the last two deliveries and scored two off the penultimate ball, which put victory out of reach.South Africa and West Indies were involved in the last tied match, with West Indies’ winning the Super Over while South Africa have been involved in the last five tied ODIs and stand-in captain Luus joked that she hoped they could come out on the right side of tense affairs fairly soon. But for that, their tactics in crunch moments needed examination. In this case, South Africa preferred Ismail in the Super Over over Ayabonga Khaka, who took a career-best 5 for 26 in eight overs, and Luus was left to explain why. “We felt Shabnim with her experience and she bowled the over before so she was confident she could keep West Indies to a low total,” she said.Ismail bowled what became the last over of the match and dismissed Shakera Selman lbw with scores level, to snatch a tie from the jaws of defeat after West Indies had clawed their way back into the chase. They were 83 for 6 in the 21st over, with danger-woman Dottin dismissed for 37, and South Africa’s slower bowlers enjoying success on what Luus called a “sticky” pitch. Chedean Nation and Chinelle Henry came together for the seventh-wicket with the intention to take their team over the line. “We had a discussion that it had to be between me and Chedean. It was about applying ourselves and keep it ticking,” Henry said. “We understand each other and we bat well together. We knew we had to take the responsibility to take the team to the end.”Henry became Khaka’s fourth victim to end their partnership on 54 and Shamilia Connell was out lbw off the next ball to leave West Indies needing 24 runs with two wickets in hand. Nation and Selman then shared 21-runs for the ninth wicket before Nation was caught off Masabata Klaas and West Indies were three runs short of victory. Ismail denied them that but could not stop them from winning the Super Over.Ultimately, South Africa may rue the way they batted, with collapses at the top and bottom of the innings. They started slowly but solidly and reached 53 without loss in the 17th over but then lost three wickets for five runs in 13 deliveries and the middle-order was required to rebuild. Luus shared a 33-run fourth-wicket stand with Mignon du Preez and a 29-run fifth-wicket stand with Tryon. She top-scored with 46 before South Africa’s lower order fell away. They lost five wickets for 18 runs in 30 balls. The five bowlers West Indies used took two wickets each, with Shamilia Connell and Hayley Matthews conceding at under three runs an over. The third match in the series will be played on Thursday, at the same venue, where according to Luus, the persistent summer rain is helping to replicate conditions the teams can expect at the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand.

Celtic have wasted money on their own Foden who’s only played 28 minutes

Since his return to Parkhead in the summer of 2023, Brendan Rodgers has been backed by the Celtic board in the transfer market in all three windows so far.

The biggest show of faith from the board so far has been the decision to break the club’s transfer record in an £11m swoop for Augsburg star Arne Engels.

However, his signings in his first window back at the club have not been hugely successful as a collective in their first 18 months or so in Glasgow.

Paulo Bernardo, who was on loan last term before joining permanently this summer, is the only one who remains a regular fixture in the side in the present day.

Celtic's 2023 summer signing woes

Per Transfermarkt, Maik Nawrocki, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Luis Palma, and Odin Thiago Holm were the four most expensive signings in that transfer window, all costing £2.5m or more.

Nawrocki, Lagerbielke, and Holm combined for just 13 starts in the Scottish Premiership during the 2023/24 campaign, and none of them have started a game in the division this season, with Lagerbielke currently on loan with FC Twente.

Palma started well at Celtic, with five goals and nine assists in his first 16 league games, but has only produced two goals and zero assists in 16 Premiership matches in 2024.

One signing that may have gone under the radar as a flop from that summer of recruits has been Australia international Marco Tilio, who was brought in for a fee of £1.5m from Melbourne City.

Marco Tilio's Celtic struggles

Shortly before his official unveiling, Football FanCast suggested that Tilio could have been Rodgers’ own version of Manchester City star Phil Foden, as a diminutive, left-footed, attacking midfielder, who can play centrally or out wide.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig had named Foden as a “similar” type of player to the then-Melbourne star and listed dribbling, technique, and ball control among the £1.5m signing’s strengths, after a return of ten goals and five assists in 25 A-League starts in the 2022/23 campaign.

Tilio, however, arrived with an injury and was not fit until September 2023, which meant that he was already down the pecking order by the time he was available.

The winger went on to play just 28 minutes across two games against Hibernian and Motherwell in November and December 2023, as the winger failed to break into the starting XI, with the likes of Palma, Hyun-jun Yang, Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi, Hyeon-gyu Oh, and James Forrest ahead of him in the forward areas.

Tilio was then sent out on loan to Melbourne City for the second half of the season and scored one goal in four matches, whilst missing nine games through injury, before returning for a second loan there in the summer transfer window.

As you can see in the table above, the 23-year-old attacker scored one goal in three matches at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, but he has been out with a hamstring injury since November and is expected to be back at the end of December.

So far, it has been £1.5m wasted for Celtic as they have only got 28 minutes of action from him in what will have been two years by the end of his current loan with Melbourne.

Celtic could repeat Kuhn masterclass by signing £7.5m wizard

Celtic were linked with an interest in the impressive winger in the summer transfer window.

ByDan Emery Nov 19, 2024

His form in Australia, along with his continued injury issues, does not suggest that he is likely to return to Parkhead and live up to being their own version of Foden.

Tilio’s contract with Celtic does not expire until the summer of 2028, though, and there is still time for him to overcome his struggles, but it currently looks as though it was £1.5m wasted by the Scottish side.

Leicester City now ready to pay £2m clause for "elite" Cooper replacement

Leicester City are now prepared to shell out £2m to secure their next manager after parting ways with Steve Cooper, it has been reported, and he is keen to move to the King Power Stadium.

Leicester part ways with Steve Cooper

Leicester City announced that they had parted ways with Cooper 24 hours after their 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in their most recent Premier League outing, with the news coming as a shock to plenty.

Though they had only won twice all season, the Foxes remained clear of the relegation zone and had faced tough fixtures that included games against Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea in their opening games.

“Leicester City Football Club has parted company with Steve Cooper, who leaves his position as first-team manager with immediate effect”, an official statement read.

“Assistant manager Alan Tate and first-team coach and analyst Steve Rands have also left the club. Steve, Alan and Steve depart with our thanks for their contribution during their time with the club and with our best wishes for the future.

“Men’s first-team training will be overseen by first-team coach Ben Dawson, supported by coaches Danny Alcock and Andy Hughes, as the club begins the process of appointing a new manager, which we hope to conclude as soon as possible.”

There has since been plenty of speculation about who could come in to take the hot seat at the King Power Stadium, with Ruud Van Nistelrooy heavily linked with the vacancy, while the likes of David Moyes and Graham Potter have also been touted as possibilities. Now, though, a new option has emerged.

Leicester ready to pay £2m to secure top choice manager

That comes according to reports in Spain, which insist that the Foxes are continuing to keep close tabs on West Brom boss Carlos Corberan, and are now ready to trigger the £2m release clause in his contract at The Hawthorns.

Corberan has enjoyed a strong spell at West Brom, though he is currently going through something of a slump himself, with the Baggies having won just one of their last 11 outings and having drawn eight of those games.

Nonetheless, he has been labelled an “elite” coach by Football recruitment expert Petar Petrov on X, who claimed that “the job of an elite coach is to push his team to a level above what is expected of that group of players. That’s what Carlos Corberán is doing at West Brom and what he did previously at Huddersfield Town”.

ByTom Cunningham Nov 22, 2024

That would certainly be what he would have to do at Leicester too, with the current Foxes squad awash with Championship talent and few true superstars among their ranks.

As per Marca [via Sport Witness], Leicester City are ready to pay Corberan’s £2m release clause at West Brom, and they believe that he could be the man to steer them away from the drop zone.

Meanwhile, GiveMeSport add that “Corberan would be keen on the job, and he would even be willing to leave West Brom during the middle of the season if he was offered the job in the East Midlands”.

The Baggies boss is “seen as a strong, stylistic fit and Leicester believe that the Spaniard would be able to build upon Maresca’s system”, with the players having shown their desire to return to that sort of football already this season.

Will Corberan be the next man in the Leicester hot-seat?

Pat Cummins eager for clarity over Justin Langer's contract

Pat Cummins is keen to have clarity on Justin Langer’s contract status beyond this summer’s Ashes, insisting Australia’s Test side “absolutely love” their coach. The future of Langer, who comes off contract in mid-2022 and has made it clear he is keen to continue, remains an unresolved talking point.Langer came under intense pressure to keep his job last year, when Cummins and other on-field leaders delivered forthright feedback about dressing-room disgruntlement. The former Test opener changed his ways, adopting more of a low-key role as Australia went on to win the Twenty20 World Cup and retain the urn. But there remains speculation Cricket Australia will opt to move Langer on.Related

  • Langer 'not edgy' about his future as calls to re-sign him grow louder

  • Justin Langer wants to stay as head coach across formats

  • No change in Langer's contract status despite T20 World Cup and Ashes glory

Cummins, asked about Langer after Australia claimed an unassailable 3-0 lead in their five-Test series against England, bluntly replied that “his contract is up for renewal in a few months and we’ll deal with that then”.He struck a more diplomatic note in Hobart, speaking after his four-wicket haul helped Australia claim a first-innings lead of 115 runs in the fifth and final Ashes Test.”That’s above my pay grade. We’ll wait and see, it’d be nice to have clarity for everyone,” Cummins said. “But he’s been doing a fantastic job, we absolutely love JL.”He’s been really great through the World Cup and the Ashes. Honestly, it’s not been a talking point at all within the camp.”The plan has always been to chat about it after the Ashes, so the powers that be, I’m sure, will chat at some stage. But he’s been fantastic for us and the boys love having him around.”CA chief executive Nick Hockley and high-performance boss Ben Oliver are yet to set a definitive timeline around the call on Langer, likewise a final decision on potentially splitting the role by installing separate white-ball and red-ball mentors. But the growing expectation is the elephant in the room will be addressed soon after the Ashes series finale. Oliver noted last month that CA will take player feedback on board before resolving Langer’s future. Former captain Steve Waugh, who worked under Langer as a consultant during the 2019 Ashes, offered strong support for his former team-mate on social media.”Position in doubt? Influenced the culture and character of the team after the Cape Town debacle,” Waugh posted on Instagram. “Coached the team to a winning World Cup 20/20 and now to a commanding Ashes victory. Time to put the rumours and innuendo to rest. #respect #culture #character.”Other former team-mates of Langer have also offered their support in recent days with Shane Warne questioning why he had not already had his deal renewed.”I don’t know what everyone’s waiting for,” Warne told Fox Cricket. “He should be signed up in my opinion because he’s done such a good job.”We’re not inside the dressing room, so we don’t know all the inside-outs, but I think the only way we can judge a coach is from the performances and has Australian cricket got better? Is the better of cricket better domestically? Is there a group of players? There’s probably three or four players outside this squad now that could all play and that wasn’t there a couple of years ago.”Australia do not have much of a break in their schedule after the Ashes with limited-overs matches against New Zealand and Sri Lanka from late January to mid-February.That is then followed by the tour of Pakistan, Australia’s first to the country since 1998, which also falls within Langer’s current contract. There will be the need to split coaches during that period with a brief T20I series in New Zealand during March, the same situation that was set to occur last season before the South Africa tour was postponed.

Both BPL matches on Friday were abandoned due to rain, without a ball being bowled. After the Sylhet Sunrisers-Fortune Barishal match was called off at 3:52pm, the Comilla Victorians-Minister Group Dhaka game was also declared abandoned at 8:40pm.All four teams got one point each, which leaves Barishal with nine points from six games, Comilla with nine from seven, Dhaka on seven from seven and Sylhet on three from six. All the teams had arrived at the Shere Bangla National Stadium and even got on the field to warm up only for rain to begin shortly before the scheduled toss of the first match.Barishal, Dhaka and Comilla would rue the washouts, having got in their groove over recent matches in Chattogram. The Shakib Al Hasan-inspired Barishal side had shaken off their early troubles to win their last three games, after winning only one of their first three matches.Comilla’s overseas signings Sunil Narine and Moeen Ali have joined the squad, giving them a stronger look. Dhaka have impressed during the BPL’s Chattogram leg too.Sylhet, however, will have welcomed the one point, having lost four of their first five matches. Despite Nazmul Islam returning in their last match, Khulna routed them by nine wickets. They even handed debuts to left-arm quick Sheraz Ahmed, the first UAE player in the BPL, and legspinner Jubair Hossain, but to no avail. The BPL will take a break for the next two days, before reconvening in Sylhet for the first time this season. The good news is that the weather forecast is of mostly dry days in the eastern city.Sylhet will host three matchdays before the BPL returns to Dhaka until its conclusion on February 18.

Celtic and Rodgers already eyeing signing to replace £4m player in January

Celtic have set their sights on signing a specific player in the January transfer window, according to an encouraging new transfer update.

Celtic flying once again in 2024/25

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is the Hoops who have once again set the pace in Scottish football this season, even if they are only top of the Scottish Premiership table ahead of Aberdeen on goal difference.

The Dons have been a surprise package in many ways, drawing 2-2 at Celtic earlier in the campaign and beating Rangers 2-1 in midweek, but they came crashing back down to reality against Rodgers’ men on Saturday afternoon.

The Hoops thumped Aberdeen 6-0 in the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup, producing a devastating performance to reach yet another domestic cup final, and it once again highlighted the gulf in class between the two sides, even though the Dons have matched them in the league to date.

Brendan Rodgers won’t want to rest on his laurels, however, as he looks to seal another domestic treble this season, and new signings in January could give his squad that extra bit of quality, as they look to also remain in the Champions League. It looks as though an addition may be coming in, following a new update.

Celtic eyeing new defensive signing in January

According to Football Insider, Celtic are now “seeking to bolster their defence in the January transfer window” and are accelerating their plans to do so, with Rodgers making it clear that he wants reinforcements there.

£4m defender Alexandro Bernabei may not play for the Hoops again, finding himself out of favour and loaned out to Brazilian side Internacional, so a new left-back to replace him appears to be at the forefront of the club’s transfer plans.

Celtic defender Alexandro Bernabei.

Celtic supporters will enjoy this update, with the club looking to be forceful in the transfer market and be ruthless in their quest to win yet another Scottish Premiership crown, strengthening their squad and not allowing Aberdeen a sniff of glory.

Should Bernabei move on, left-back looks to be an area of the pitch to focus on, although Greg Taylor and Alex Valle are already representing strong options there.

Centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers was a big loss through injury recently, and his absence perhaps highlighted the need for more depth at centre-back, while added competition for Alistair Johnston at right-back wouldn’t go amiss.

In truth, Celtic would still have the best squad in the country even if no business was done in the January window, but adding new faces can never be a bad thing, in terms of freshening things up and keeping current players on their toes, so seeing a defender of some kind arrive midway through the season should be encouraged.

The 8.0 Celtic star who just showed Rodgers exactly what he's been missing

The Celtic forward showed the manager what he can offer to the team on Wednesday.

ByDan Emery Oct 31, 2024

It is hard to criticise the Hoops’ back-line, considering they have conceded just three times in 10 league matches this season, but looking for perfection should always be the aim, and it looks as if a new addition will be on the way in 2025.

She is well aware of the pressure of playing against arch-rivals India in the Women’s ODI World Cup opener next month but Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof hopes that the marquee match will inspire girls across the border to make a career in the sport.India are set to face Pakistan in their opener of the World Cup on March 6 in Mount Maunganui. The tournament will be held from March 4 to April 3 across six cities in New Zealand.”Pakistan vs India is indeed a great stage for any player to establish her credentials, but at the end of the day, it is a cricket match that has to be won by executing the basics right and keeping thing simple,” Maroof, who is making a comeback after motherhood, told PTI from Queenstown.Related

“This match is a great opportunity to inspire millions of girls in Pakistan and India to take up this sport as a profession. It is the biggest rivalry, and attracts innumerable eyeballs.”I hope girls in the two countries will watch this match and will be inspired to take up the game.”She praised the Indian team led by Mithali Raj, but she was very optimistic about Pakistan’s chances against them.”The Indian team is a good unit and has done well recently. They also have had some very good youngsters coming in of late,” she said. “Our aim is to make it to the semi-finals, something which we have never done before. I strongly believe that this side has all the ingredients to achieve that.Being the senior-most player and the captain of the team, Maroof felt it was her duty to lead from from the front.”Being the senior player and the captain of the side you have to inspire your team and lead by example. If you are not doing the right things, you cannot demand them from girls. I have a very clear vision with this team that we need to be in top four.”When asked about the team composition, she said that conditions in New Zealand will determine the playing XI.Maroof has played 108 ODIs and equal number of T20I matches and has scored 2602 and 2225 runs, respectively.Having seen many ups and downs in her journey so far, she had once decided to quit cricket to embrace motherhood.”It has been an incredible journey and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Being a cricketer has designed my life and played a very important role in the person I am today. There have been ups and downs, which have made me learn,” she said.”I am very excited to be back. It feels like I am making my debut again for Pakistan. I am grateful to my family, especially my husband who has supported me immensely throughout this phase. I also want to mention the support that the Pakistan Cricket Board has provided me through the parental policy.”To make a successful comeback after motherhood is not easy and Maroof has worked very hard to regain that level of form and fitness.”The journey from childbirth to getting here had its fair share of difficulties, as I had to start from scratch to regain my fitness,” she said. “Women don’t often return to sports or continue their professional careers after getting married or childbirth.”I spent a lot of time doing strength and conditioning sessions at the National High Performance Centre in Lahore.”

With one eye on World Cups, Indian players begin work on enhancing fitness levels at the NCA

In a move to enhance and maintain peak fitness levels for the two World Cups in the next 20 months, the Indian team management – in coordination with the selectors and the National Cricket Academy – has asked a batch of shortlisted players to undergo a fitness camp in Bengaluru.ESPNcricinfo has learned that at least 25 players are right now at the NCA, currently midway through the camp which started on March 5 and will end on March 14 after which they will head to join their respective IPL teams. All the players will undergo a fitness test before they break out of the camp, but unlike last year when it was mandatory to clear the benchmarks, this time it is to record a baseline mark for every player.Among those who have already started with the camp include Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shardul Thakur, Harshal Patel, Venkatesh Iyer, Sanju Samson, Deepak Hooda, Varun Chakravarthy, Washington Sundar, Prithvi Shaw and Umran Malik. Also joining the camp are a set of players who are doing rehabilitation for separate injuries: KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan. Several players, who featured in the league phase of the Ranji Trophy, which got over recently, also joined the camp this week.It is learned the camp was finalised recently by both the Indian team management led by head coach Rahul Dravid and had the backing of both the selection panel as well as NCA, which is headed by former India batter VVS Laxman. Both Dravid and Laxman want the NCA to function more as a high-performance centre and this camp was taking forward the initiative launched last year when a batch of white-ball only players – both contracted and otherwise – underwent fitness tests which were mandatory to be cleared. Players last year had to clear either the yo-yo test or run a 2-kilometre time trial. This year, though, the basis for the camp is to log in the fitness parameters for each player which then can be stored in a central database and can be accessed anytime by the Indian coaching staff including the physio, trainers and strength and conditioning coaches. Creating such a standardised structure, the BCCI believes, will prove vital as India prepare for the T20 World Cup (scheduled in Australia in October-November this year) as well as the ODI World Cup, which will be hosted in India in late 2023.Part of that process would be to establish a baseline fitness level for each individual which will then be monitored and updated frequently. The baseline is established by making a player undergo various fitness drills including performing standing long jump, 2 kilometre time trial, yo-yo test, Dexa body scan (to measure fat percentage and lean muscle mass) as well various other tests. While there are some markers put in place – like the 17:1 level for yo-yo tests and running the 2 kilometre time trial inside 8 minutes 30 seconds – players this time have been encouraged to push themselves if they want to without any pressure. The baseline figure will be recorded once the player takes the test before the leaves the camp. Thereafter the player’s fitness parameters would be measured against this baseline figure and how he is able to maintain under the workload. For example, someone playing in the forthcoming IPL, which will be played between March 26 and May 29, can compare his baseline figure before the tournament and at the end. That will allow the player to understand not just where he is good at in terms of fitness, but also vulnerable areas. It also helps trainers understand where the player is peaking and spot areas of improvement.
