Rashid Khan threatens to pull out of BBL over Australia's refusal to play Afghanistan

The Afghanistan board calls CA’s decision “pathetic”, and says it will write to the ICC over the issue

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Jan-2023Rashid Khan has threatened to pull out of the BBL, where he plays for Adelaide Strikers, following Cricket Australia’s decision to withdraw its men’s team from a bilateral ODI series against Afghanistan in March because of the Taliban’s stance banning university education for girls in the country.”I am really disappointed to hear that Australia have pulled out of the series to play us in March,” Rashid said. “I take great pride in representing my country, and we have made great progress on the world stage. This decision from CA sets us back in that journey. If playing vs Afghanistan is so uncomfortable for Australia, then I wouldn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable with my presence in the BBL. Therefore, I will be strongly considering my future in that competition.”Rashid played eight matches for Strikers this season before leaving to play for MI Cape Town in the SA20. He was not expected to return to the BBL this season because of conflicting commitments.

Rashid’s statement joined a chorus of protests from Afghanistan’s male cricketers and came shortly after the Afghanistan Cricket Board had called CA’s statement “pathetic”. The ACB said it would write to the ICC over the issue, saying the Australian board was “prioritising political interests over the principles of fair play and sportsmanship”, and “undermining the integrity of the game and damaging the relationship between the two nations”.Earlier on Thursday, CA had announced its decision to withdraw the Australian men’s team from a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in the UAE following consultation with the Australian government. The reason given was a recent announcement from the Taliban – which governs Afghanistan – that it was banning university education for girls, a development that ICC CEO Geoff Allardice had described as concerning.Related

Cricket Australia confirms postponement of Afghanistan Test

The ACB said in its response that it would now “rethink the participation of Afghan players in the Big Bash League” if CA did not overturn its decision. The ACB’s statement, however, did not make a specific mention of the future of women’s cricket in Afghanistan.”Cricket Australia’s decision to withdraw from upcoming matches against Afghanistan is coming after consultation and potential enforcement from the Australian Government, which is an unfortunate attempt to enter the realm of politics and politicise the sport,” the ACB statement said. "The decision to withdraw from playing the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan is unfair and unexpected, and will have a negative impact on the development and growth of cricket in Afghanistan as well as will affect the love and passion of the Afghan nation for the game.”Cricket has played a significant role in promoting unity and national pride in Afghanistan. After years of war and conflict, cricket has helped to bring people together and provide a sense of normalcy to the country. It has also been an important source of hope and inspiration for all Afghans, particularly young people. In addition, Cricket [sic] has also been an important tool for promoting education and social development in the country.”The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has been working to promote cricket in schools and universities, and it has also been using the sport to promote healthy lifestyles and discourage young people from getting involved in drugs and crime. Cricket has been an important tool for promoting peace, unity, and development in Afghanistan, and it will continue to be a source of inspiration and hope for the people of the country in the years to come.”This is the second time in two years that CA have cancelled a bilateral fixture with Afghanistan due to the Taliban government’s policies on women following the postponement of the one-off Test that was scheduled to be played in Hobart in November 2021.Australia did play Afghanistan in Adelaide during the recent T20 World Cup. They are slated to meet Afghanistan twice more in the next Future Tours cycle, with three T20Is scheduled at a neutral venue in August 2024, and Afghanistan due to tour Australia in August 2026 to play one Test and three T20Is.

49ers hold internal talks over move to sign £25m ace for Leeds if promoted

Internal talks over signing a “special” number 10 have been held at Leeds United ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a recent report.

Leeds news and updates

There is still a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season, but with the Whites looking on course to seal a return to the Premier League, plans behind the scenes will be starting to take shape as they prepare for the likelihood of top-flight football next season.

Cost £7m, now worth more than Solomon: Leeds struck gold on "top-class" ace

Leeds United have completed some phenomenal business in the market over the last couple of years.

ByEthan Lamb Feb 13, 2025

This week Daniel Farke stated that discussions over new contracts for the soon-to-be free agents have yet to begin. Sam Byram, Junior Firpo, and Josuha Guilavogui’s contracts are all set to expire at the end of the season, and Farke revealed that talks will be held at the right time.

Meanwhile, ahead of the summer transfer window, it has been reported that Manor Solomon could be available for a permanent transfer. The winger is currently on loan at Elland Road from Tottenham Hotspur, and it’s been claimed that he would be allowed to leave on a permanent basis in the summer if an opportunity is presented.

Solomon has made a big impact since joining Leeds, being a key player in their attack, as he was crowned the club’s player of the month in January.

Leeds hold internal talks over move to sign £25m ace

Solomon is not the only player the Whites have their eyes on ahead of the summer, as according to TEAMtalk, Leeds have held internal talks over a move to sign James McAtee from Manchester City if they are promoted to the Premier League.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

The report states that the Championship outfit will prioritise signing a new number 10 in the summer, with interest remaining in Emi Buendia, who was a target during January but ended up joining Bayer Leverkusen instead. As well as Buendia, Leeds also hold interest in Eduard Spertsyan, Gustavo Hamer and McAtee, who could be available for a loan move next season.

Before this campaign, McAtee enjoyed two rather successful loan spells at Sheffield United, and instead of going on loan again, Man City decided to keep him at the Etihad this season. However, the midfielder has only played 16 times for the Blues, struggling to make an impact in the starting XI.

The 22-year-old has failed to start in the Premier League or Champions League, with the majority of his game time coming in the FA Cup.

Given his lack of game time this season, City could decide to let McAtee leave on loan in the summer, or they could even decide to cash in, but it would cost Leeds and any other interested team £25 million to secure his services that way. Despite not playing regularly, McAtee has been labelled “special” by Pep Guardiola this season.

“I’m so happy for him; he’s a special player,” Guardiola said of McAtee after his hat-trick against Salford City.

Tottenham face AZ Alkmaar in Europa League last 16

Postecoglou could well benefit from the full returns of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke, who have all been missing for weeks, but the Australian was coy over their chances of starting tonight.

“We’ll see, we’ll train today,” said Postecoglou in his latest pre-match press conference. “Obviously they’ve all out for significant amount of time so we’ll see when we reintroduce them but they’re all here and training today, so we’ll make decisions after that.”

Spurs’ boss will be eager to reintroduce as many first-team stars as possible before the next international break, and the Europa League represents their only chance of winning any major silverware in Postecoglou’s second season in charge.

“I think it is fair to say the boys really understand there is a great opportunity for us,” said Postecolgou on the Europa League. I think they’ve appreciated the fact that the guys who have been playing through are now able to recover and train and prepare themselves better for games.

“That’s coincided with seeing their teammates come back and certainly the guys that have been out injured, we’ve already seen with guys like Vic, Brennan, Madders to a lesser extent (due to time out) but Wilson, Destiny, they’ve come back with a real hunger and desire to help the team because I think they’ve all been frustrated to sit on the sidelines and see how difficult it has for the group of players who have been playing. They’ve just wanted to help and now they get that opportunity.

“Again, I think you sense that in the group that they appreciate they have some support and some help. There is a platform there for us to hopefully get back to playing our football and seeing how far we can progress.”

Tottenham open talks with Flamengo defender Wesley Franca

According to RTI Esporte, the Lilywhites are also preparing for next season by making enquiries over key targets, and one of them is believed to be Flamengo defender Wesley Franca.

Wesley Franca celebrates for Flamengo.

As per their information, Tottenham have held talks with Franca’s representatives, but they’re by no means the only Premier League side who are keen on a move for the right-back.

Cross-town rivals Arsenal also made contact with his camp this week, to gauge the conditions of a potential deal, with Franca’s price tag believed to stand at around £29 million.

The 21-year-old, called “exceptional” by ex-Chelsea and Atlético Madrid defender Felipe Luis, can also play as a right-midfielder when required. After claims of Real Madrid interest in Pedro Porro, Spurs have been sporadically linked with a new full-back, and Franca could be an astute option.

Tamim: Bangladesh 'should tour Australia and England more often'

“It’s sad actually that we haven’t toured England again after doing so well, especially in white-ball cricket”

Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh’s ODI captain, has expressed his frustration that his side are not given the opportunity to tour England and Australia more often.Bangladesh have not toured England for a bilateral series since 2010, when they played two Tests and three ODIs. Tamim, then aged 21, hit hundreds at Lord’s and Old Trafford, and while Bangladesh were heavily beaten in both Tests, they took the ODI series to a decider thanks to a memorable win in Bristol.Related

Their most recent bilateral tour to Australia was even longer ago, a three-match ODI series back in 2008. They are due to travel there for two Tests in March 2027, according to the ICC’s Future Tours Programme, but are not due to play an away series against England in this edition of the FTP.”That’s a long way away now, 2010,” Tamim told the UK’s . “But those innings I will always remember. Scoring a hundred in England is not easy, especially for a team like us. The memories are something that, when I’ve finished cricket, I will take forever in my heart.”Those two are really close to my heart, but the most important thing is you guys need to invite us more often. That was the last time we played there, which is unfortunate. Bangladesh is in a situation now where we should tour Australia and England more often and I don’t know why that doesn’t happen.”It’s been 13 years now and we haven’t been back to England. It’s sad actually that we haven’t toured again after doing so well, especially in white-ball cricket.”There are more than 600,000 people in England and Wales who registered as Bangladeshi in the 2021 census, and Bangladesh’s fixtures at the 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 World Cup attracted substantial crowds. And Tamim believes that would be repeated if Bangladesh were invited for a bilateral tour. “I can guarantee you, it will be less England fans and more Bangladeshi fans, for sure,” he said.”If you remember the 2017 Champions Trophy, we actually outnumbered the English fans… whatever format we play, if we get invited to play in England, it will be a full house.”Bangladesh are due to tour England later this year, but their opponents will be Ireland. The teams are due to play three ODIs in the final fixtures of the ICC’s Super League, which are expected to be staged at Chelmsford in the second week of May. The fixtures have not yet been confirmed.

Sunderland chiefs eyeing move to sign "exceptional" in-demand £10m teenager

Sunderland are desperate to restore their former glories by earning promotion to the Premier League, which could offer a platform for Regis Le Bris to make savvy additions during the transfer window.

Sunderland's inconsistent form likely to deny automatic promotion

Despite a storming start to the campaign, Sunderland have become one of the Championship’s more erratic sides. They now sit eight points behind Sheffield United in the hunt for automatic promotion.

Pulling back that margin inside 11 matches isn’t impossible, but Regis Le Bris will be mentally prepared for the agony and ecstasy the playoffs have to offer should they fail to catch the Blades.

The Black Cats lost out in the same format to Luton Town at the semi-final stage in 2022/23. Old wounds can provide unwanted flashbacks, but they can also serve as motivation to right the wrongs of the past.

Le Bris also knows that promotion will likely have a telling impact on their transfer activity. Sunderland are aware that Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg are attracting heavy interest and may be difficult to retain this summer. However, speculation regarding potential incomings at the Stadium of Light is also escalating.

Reports suggest Hansa Rostock’s Ahmet Gurleyen is on the Black Cats’ radar and could be available for just £414,000. No matter the division they ply their trade in next campaign, there is always scope for financially advantageous deals to occur in the North East.

On that token, Sunderland are eyeing a midfielder who has emerged as one of the most promising stars to come out of his nation in recent years.

Sunderland plot swoop for Motherwell sensation Lennon Miller

According to Graeme Bailey via EFL Analysis, Sunderland are among a clutch of clubs in the running to sign Motherwell’s Lennon Miller this summer as the midfielder continues to star at Fir Park.

Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, Leeds United and top flight sides such as Liverpool and rivals Newcastle United are also mooted to have shown interest in the Scotland Under-21 international.

Sunderland agree deal to sell £5,000-a-week player who Tony Mowbray loved

This comes after talks in the last few weeks.

ByCharlie Smith Mar 6, 2025

Branded as “an exceptional talent” by Motherwell chief executive Brian Caldwell, Miller has registered four goals and six assists in 30 appearances across all competitions this term.

Only 18 years of age, the prodigious star has already worn the captain’s armband at his club. He is viewed as one of the hottest properties in Scottish football and the Steelmen estimate that he could be worth just under £10 million, even with his contract rolling into its final year.

Demonstrating versatility in the engine room, Miller has won 128 duels and 71.8% of his tackles on Scottish Premiership duty. Offensively, the Wishaw-born man has created 42 chances, so it is easy to see why his list of admirers is growing.

Sunderland are set to be in a decent position to land his services if they gain promotion this term. Nevertheless, whether he will opt for the Stadium of Light remains to be seen.

With or without Khawaja, Australia face a 'big challenge' to save the series

Usman Khawaja will be assessed ahead of the final day’s play in Ahmedabad to determine how much of a role he is able to play after suffering an injury to his left leg with Australia facing a fight to save the game.Khawaja appeared to jar his left knee attempting to take a boundary catch offered by Axar Patel at the start of the 148th over with the problem described as a lower leg issue that would continue to be evaluated. He hobbled back around the boundary to the dressing room and did not reappear. He was unable to open in the second innings due to the time spent off the field with Matt Kuhnemann handed the unexpected elevation as a nightwatcher. He successfully negotiated the day alongside Travis Head although was dropped by KS Bharat off R Ashwin’s last delivery.Related

Regardless of how well Khawaja pulls up overnight it appears likely he will be impeded in some way should he be able to bat and runners are no longer allowed in international cricket. He made a superb 180 in the first innings and has been Australia’s standout batter in the series with 333 runs at 47.57.In 2014, Khawaja had to undergo reconstructive surgery on his left knee after tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament and in 2018 suffered a meniscal tear when he twisted the same knee during a warm-up fielding drill during Australia’s Test series against Pakistan in the UAE. However, as of the close of play in Ahmedabad this injury was not specifically being related to his knee. With or without Khawaja, Australia will need to dig deep after two long days in the field where centuries from Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, alongside another valuable hand from Axar, built India a 91-run lead.”It is going to be a big challenge obviously,” Alex Carey said. “We will put a fair bit of focus on that first hour of cricket and then we’ll see how that unfolds. Thought we did really well today minimise the lead.”After a number of years where Test cricket in India has generally been dominated by pitches in favour of the spinners, this match has reverted to another style: where a visiting team finds a large first-innings total isn’t big enough. There are similarities to the 2016-17 Test in Ranchi where Australia made 451 only for that to be dwarfed by India’s 603 which left them with a final-day battle for survival. They were able to achieve it through Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb.”We wanted to score more than 480,” Carey admitted. “Think the tail did a great job in finding us an extra 80-100 runs. Cameron Green’s innings was great and he’ll want to go bigger next time. Think anytime you post a decent score you put a bit of pressure back in the [opposition] changing room to then go big and some class players for India did that.”The Australians found some reasons to smile in the last session after a hot day in the middle•BCCI

In that Ranchi Test six years ago, Steve O’Keefe sent down 77 overs – the sixth-most in terms of balls bowled for an Australian spinner. This time it was the turn of Nathan Lyon to clock up the huge numbers as he hit 65, his most for a Test innings, narrowly overtaking the 64 he sent down in Galle last year. Both he and Todd Murphy, who continued to show outstanding control in his debut series, were never taken apart by India’s batters. It was another tough day for Australia’s quicks with Mitchell Starc picking up their lone success when he speared one through Axar. Starc was used sparingly by Smith for just five overs on the fourth day. Cameron Green was expensive, getting taken for 21 off an over shortly after lunch when he briefly attempted to implement a short-ball plan to Bharat who repeatedly pulled him over the short leg-side boundary. With Australia’s bowling potentially done for the series, it won’t be one their quicks will remember fondly. The combination of Starc, Green, Pat Cummins and Scott Boland have five wickets to show for their efforts. The pace-bowling average of 77.80 places it as the fourth-most expensive series for a cohort of Australian quicks. In comparison, India’s quicks have taken their 13 wickets at 33.53.After Green had completed what became his final spell, during which he had been dispatched for a brace of gorgeous boundaries by Kohli, Starc walked over to him on the outfield and offered a supportive arm around the shoulder. Many a bowler has had that treatment. After what happened in Delhi, Australia have held their tour together impressively, but the last day promises to be a final challenge and potentially without one of their best batters.
