He's like Rashford: Chelsea step up move for 19-year-old Sesko alternative

At one stage of the season, Chelsea looked like they could challenge for the Premier League title.

Enzo Maresca managed to get his side playing well, with Cole Palmer contributing 12 goals and six assists up until the start of 2025.

Since then, however, their form has dropped off a cliff. Indeed, Maresca’s side have won just four Premier League matches in the calendar year thus far.

Chelsea'sColePalmerreacts

It appears as though the manager is already planning for next season and beyond, as Chelsea have completed the signings of Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo, spending £62.4m in the process.

Once the transfer window opens on June 1, Maresca will be keen on adding to his squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The centre-forward department is one that will be bolstered during the transfer window, as doubts remain over Nicolas Jackson, while Christopher Nkunku has attracted interest from elsewhere.

Reports claim that Chelsea are a club who are leading the chase for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, with Arsenal also showing some interest.

The 21-year-old is one of the most coveted young talents on the continent, and it is looking increasingly likely that he will depart the German side this summer.

Maresca isn’t just showing admiration for the Slovenian forward, however, as another youngster has caught his attention in recent times…

Chelsea's search for a striker

According to a one recent report, Chelsea are stepping up their interest in Colombian forward Neyser Villarreal.

The club sent a chief scout to monitor his performance for Millonarios during their clash against Santa Fe earlier this week, a game in which the player was shown a yellow card for standing on the ball.

Inter Miami, Porto and Watford are the other interested parties, according to the report, although the Blues must be seen as the frontrunners, especially as they could be playing Champions League football next season.

The 19-year-old is out of contract at the end of 2025, which could encourage the Blues to make an offer sooner rather than later in order to lure him to the Premier League.

The Stamford Bridge side have a plethora of South American stars already at the club, including Oscar Perea and Kendry Paez, with Estevao recently linking up with the squad.

Why Chelsea are interested in signing Neyser Villarreal

The teenager is capable of playing anywhere across the front three, showing impressive positional flexibility, despite playing only 13 games for his club side during his embryonic career.

In just two league games this season, Villarreal has already notched up a single assist, while averaging 3.5 shots per game in the Colombian Apertura. The youngster has also averaged 0.5 key passes per game and succeeded with 0.5 dribbles each game for his club side.

Aston Villa's MarcusRashfordreacts after the match

Amid that fine form, he has been likened to England star, Marcus Rashford, by talent scout Jacek Kulig, due to his ability to operate on either flank or in a central role.

Rashford – who has scored six career goals against the Blues to date – also burst onto the scene at Manchester United as a teenage striker, with Villarreal seemingly looking to follow in his footsteps.

Respected analyst Ben Mattinson praised the Colombian teen in February following an impressive showing in the South American U20 Championship, where he scored a hat trick against Paraguay.

“I love how quickly he gets off shots in the box, proper poacher. So clinical. Get it to him on either side and he’ll unleash a powerful strike towards goal,” said Mattinson.

His displays in the competition have arguably been the reason why the Blues sent a scout to monitor his performance during midweek.

How Neyser Villarreal performed at the South American U20 Championship

Colombia played nine games during the competition, which was held between January and February this year, losing only twice, to Brazil and Argentina.

Across those games, Villarreal scored an impressive tally of eight goals, while recording four assists in what was a stunning display of consistency for his country.

He scored once every 95 minutes while averaging 1.4 shots on target per game, and the 19-year-old could have scored even more, having missed four big chances during the tournament.

Elsewhere, Villarreal also created four big chances, averaged 2.1 key passes per game and succeeded with one dribble each match, showcasing a multitude of skills throughout the competition.

These displays have clearly attracted plenty of interest from afar, but is he ready for a move to Europe right now? Perhaps spending another season in South America would allow him to continue his development.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

With the Blues eyeing up other strikers ahead of the summer transfer window, Sesko included, could Villarreal turn out to be a better long-term signing?

How Villarreal compares to Sesko

Sesko has shone since making the move from RB Salzburg to Leipzig in the summer of 2023. The 21-year-old has scored 35 goals across 78 games, which is a better record than the one he achieved in Austria.

The young centre-forward is certainly making waves in the Bundesliga, scoring a goal once every 189 minutes, although he has missed big chances to add to his tally of ten league goals so far this season.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskoshoots at goal

Sesko isn’t shy about creating chances for others either, creating five big chances in the Bundesliga this term, proving that he isn’t strictly all for scoring goals.

It appears as though he is ready to make the move to a bigger club, with his signature being highly contested during the summer transfer window.

Villarreal might just have a bigger ceiling, however. While Chelsea are doing their best to harvest every promising South American talent that is going, the Millonarios youngster could turn out to be the best of the lot.

The best thing is, that he would cost significantly less than Sesko, especially with his contract expiring at the end of 2025.

Leipzig will be keen to get as much as they can for the Slovenian international, no doubt about that.

Turning to the next Rashford in Villarreal could well be the better long-term strategy for the Blues.

Levy playing "leading role" to sign "world-class" player for Tottenham at half-price

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is spearheading the club’s pursuit of a “world-class” player, and one who Spurs could end up signing for half of his marquee summer asking price.

Daniel Levy tipped to make changes at Tottenham

The Lilywhites chairman won’t just be playing a role in facilitating the club’s transfer activity, with growing uncertainty surrounding manager Ange Postecoglou and his long-term future at N17.

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola and Fulham manager Marco Silva are seen as two key targets for Levy (The Athletic), if he does decide to pull the plug on Postecoglou’s reign at Spurs, with both tacticians currently above Spurs in the Premier League table off the back of much more impressive campaigns.

The north Londoners have suffered 15 league defeats already, which is a long way off where Spurs want to be as a ‘big six’ club, and even when you make a case for their plethora of injuries throughout 2024/2025, results on the field simply haven’t been good enough.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecoglou

Meanwhile, changes nearer the boardroom haven’t been ruled out either. According to Italian news outlet Radio Rossenera, former managing director Fabio Paratici has held a meeting with Levy over re-joining Tottenham, with his worldwide ban from football nearly over and set to end on June 30th.

With dissatisfaction surrounding the club’s running and pressure growing on Levy, this summer window could be imperative.

Both Tottenham’s team and backroom may look very different once we reach the beginning of 2025/2026, with Southampton starlet Tyler Dibling is rumoured to be one of the main candidates to link up with the squad.

Southampton's TylerDiblingin action with Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers and Ian Maatsen

Spurs are registering a serious interest in Dibling as we slowly approach the summer, but reliable news outlets suggest the Saints won’t be letting him go cheaply, despite being a near-certainty for the drop.

Indeed, The Times claim Southampton have slapped an enormous £100 million on Dibling’s head to fend off suitors like Tottenham. However, as per GiveMeSport, Spurs could actually secure his services for around half-price.

Tottenham could sign Dibling for £50m-plus as Levy personally works on deal

The 19-year-old has starred throughout a breakthrough campaign which has seen him impress in a variety of attacking roles in the first-team, and Postecoglou’s side could snap him up for around £50 million-plus, despite his mooted £100m asking price.

GMS also write that Levy is taking a “leading role” in Tottenham’s pursuit of Dibling, and the high-ranking official has personally been working on a deal “for weeks”. It is apparently Levy’s “personal mission” to strike a deal for the Englishman, who has been called a “world-class” talent.

“Players in those positions tend to pass – and too often sideways,” said Southampton’s academy manager, Andy Goldie.

“He catches the eye because he gets the ball and his first thought is: ‘How quickly can I get to the goal?’ He has scored a few – that part of his game will continue to develop – and once that bit has really clicked, you’re talking about a world-class talent.”

Over his 30 appearances in all competitions for Southampton, Dibling has four goals and three assists to his name, while WhoScored states the homegrown ace has averaged more completed take-ons per 90 than any other player in their squad – leaving little wonder clubs are standing up and taking notice.

Sri Lanka drop Angelo Mathews from World Cup Qualifier squad

The squad includes fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana and legspinner Dushan Hemantha, who recently made their ODI debuts

Madushka Balasuriya09-Jun-2023Sri Lanka’s dalliance with Angelo Mathews in ODIs appears to have been short-lived after the veteran was left out from the 15-man squad set to fly out to Zimbabwe for the World Cup Qualifier later this month.Mathews had been recalled to the ODI side ahead of Sri Lanka’s tour of New Zealand earlier this year following an absence of two years. The decision had given the 36-year-old hopes of a World Cup swansong. However, following a string of subpar showings – since his return, he has made scores of 18, 0 and 12 – he was dropped from the playing XI ahead of the second ODI against Afghanistan last week.Sadeera Samarawickrama, Mathews’ replacement for that match, made a brisk 44, which saw him retain his place in the third ODI that followed, though he wasn’t required to bat. Thus, Mathews, who has 221 ODIs under his belt, now seems unlikely to add to that number.Related

His recall ahead of the Afghanistan series, along with that of Dimuth Karunaratne, was seen as a shift from the selectors to focus more on experience during a World Cup year. But Karunaratne’s retention for the World Cup Qualifier is proof that he remains in their minds, though the 35-year-old certainly seems to have earned his opportunity, racking up back-to-back fifties on his return to the ODI side as Sri Lanka secured a come-from-behind series win against Afghanistan. The rest of the squad, though, has few surprises. The batting unit mostly picks itself, with captain Dasun Shanaka leading the likes of Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva and Samarawickrama.Chamika Karunaratne, Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga fill the allrounders’ slots, while Hasaranga also leads a spin department that also includes Maheesh Theekshana and legspinner Dushan Hemantha.Hemantha earned his maiden cap in the first ODI against Afghanistan, stepping in for the injured Hasaranga. However, upon Hasaranga’s return to the XI, he failed to feature for the rest of the series. His inclusion seems to be based primarily on his ability to act as cover for Hasaranga, though he has impressed domestically in the recent past.Where Sri Lanka’s trump cards lie, though, is in their lively – though fragile – seam department. Dushmantha Chameera, who made an impressive return to action in the Afghanistan series after ten months out, heads it, although his workload still needs managing. The same goes for Lahiru Kumara, who is capable of express pace but also, far too often, of not being able to complete his spells owing to niggling injuries – most recently in the first ODI against Afghanistan. The young and exciting Matheesha Pathirana has also made it to the squad. He made a splash in the IPL earlier this year with his 145kph slinging yorkers prior to even receiving an ODI cap, which he eventually did last week.Kasun Rajitha, who rounds out the lot, is not express but can be relied upon for some early swing, and nagging lines and lengths.Sri Lanka begin their qualifying campaign on June 19 against UAE in Bulawayo, prior to which they will play three warm-up games.Sri Lanka squad: Dasun Shanaka (capt), Kusal Mendis (wk), Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushan Hemantha, Wanindu Hasaranga, Lahiru Kumara, Dushmantha Chameera, Kasun Rajitha, Matheesha Pathirana, Maheesh Theekshana

Foxes show bite thanks to Rishi Patel's maiden T20 hundred

Leicestershire stroll to target for only their second win of the season

ECB Reporters Network09-Jun-2023

Rishi Patel notched his maiden T20 hundred•Getty Images

A maiden T20 century by Rishi Patel powered Leicestershire Foxes to an impressive six-wicket Vitality Blast victory over Durham at the Uptonsteel County Ground, Grace Road. The 24-year-old right-hand bat – dropped on 38 – struck 103 from 49 balls with 12 fours and four sixes as the Foxes cruised home with 14 balls to spare with comfortably their most emphatic performances of an otherwise dismal season to date, Lewis Hill hitting the winning runs to finish on an unbeaten 54 from 41 balls. It was Durham’s second defeat by Leicestershire in six days although the Foxes remain bottom of the North Group table, having lost their other six games.Aussie Ashton Turner’s unbeaten 60 from 38 balls lifted Durham’s total to a challenging 172 for 4 against a makeshift Foxes bowling attack from which key man Naveen ul-Haq was missing though injury. Ollie Robinson made 30 from 31 balls and Graham Clark 27 from just 14 in the powerplay but spinner Callum Parkinson (2 for 21) and teenage pace bowler Josh Hull (1 for 26) made sure that the visitors were never able to dominate.Asked to bat first, Durham posted 59 for 2 from the opening block of six, 35 of those runs coming in two overs after the visitors went hard against the two new faces in the Foxes attack, with Matt Salisbury and Tom Scriven drafted in for their county Blast debuts after injuries to Mikey Finan and Will Davis as well as Afghan international Naveen.Salisbury, who did not play in the Blast during his four years at Durham but made eight appearances for Essex in 2014, took a wicket with his fifth ball against his ex-team-mates when Alex Lees swung optimistically and was bowled, but took some punishment in his second over as Clark and Michael Jones plundered 17 runs, the pair having taken 18 off Scriven in the previous over, although Clark survived a difficult chance to point on four.Hull finished the powerplay well for the Foxes as Jones miscued to mid-on and when left-arm spinner Parkinson produced a fine, full delivery to trap Clark in the crease in the next over, Durham were 61 for 3. At halfway, with Colin Ackermann and Rehan Ahmed applying the squeeze, they were 80 for 3, advancing to 112 for 4 from 15 overs after Parkinson made another big breakthrough, bowling Robinson to register his 100th Blast wicket for the county. The Foxes would have been disappointed not to claim more wickets in the last five, which saw Turner and Bas de Leede swell the total by 62 runs, both clearing the ropes of Rehan’s legspin, but Hull, the 18-year-old left-arm quick of whom they have high hopes, produced an impressive final over costing just eight runs to finish with 1 for 26.Needing to score at 8.65 runs per over, the home side suffered an immediate setback, losing Nick Welch to the fifth ball of their reply as he missed an attempted sweep against left-arm spinner Liam Trevaskis, but recovered well, with Hill pulling and scooping profitably and Patel hitting powerfully down the ground, to be 69 for 1 from six, although the latter had an escape when Ben Raine dropped what should have been a straightforward chance at wide long-on.Back-to-back boundaries off Turner took Patel to a 21-ball half-century and two more off legspinner Nathan Sowter’s next over brought the target down to 70 with 70 balls remaining. And there was no holding the Foxes back on this occasion with Patel in destructive mood, needing just 24 more balls to reach his hundred, getting there his second six in three balls over wide long-on off Sowter, and although it all ended anticlimactically in the next over as an ill-advised decision to go for a second run to de Leede at midwicket off Wayne Parnell saw him run out.Nonetheless, the home side went into the final five overs needing just 21 to win and though Parnell dismissed Colin Ackermann, who chopped on, and Louis Kimber, caught behind, with consecutive balls, to induce a little anxiety in the home crowd, only 14 more were needed, Hill finishing the job by pulling Sowter for his third six before driving the same bowler through extra cover for four next ball.

Fewer touches than Vicario: Ange must drop 3/10 Spurs dud after Bournemouth

Tottenham Hotspur came from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw with European chasing Bournemouth in North London earlier on this afternoon.

Goals from Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson gave the Cherries a two-goal advantage before Pape Sarr’s effort floated over Kepa Arrizabalaga, who fouled Heung-min Son in the area, resulting in the South Korean stepping up from the spot to level the game.

The point moved Ange Postecoglou’s side onto 34 points in the Premier League, sitting 10 points off Andoni Iraola’s men after the clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

TottenhamHotspur manager Ange Postecoglou celebrates after the match

With just ten games to go, the Aussie will be able to experiment with his side, potentially planning who he may look to move on over the summer to avenge this campaign’s woes.

As a result, numerous players who started the clash against the Cherries today could struggle to maintain their role in the squad going forward.

Spurs’ poor performers against Bournemouth

Cristian Romero returned to the side today after his recent injury layoff but demonstrated signs of rustiness after not featuring since the start of December.

The Argentine featured for an hour before being replaced, losing possession 13 times and committing two fouls before his withdrawal from the contest.

Midfielder Yves Bissouma was handed his first Premier League start since the beginning of February this afternoon, but like Romero, he looked off the pace throughout.

The former Brighton man was replaced at the break, after getting dribbled past once and picking up a booking for a challenge on Evanilson, which deliberately prevented the counter-attack.

However, despite the performances of the aforementioned duo, one other first-team regular failed to deliver, with Ange needing to drop him ahead of Thursday’s crunch Europa League clash.

The Spurs player who needs to be dropped after 3/10 display

In recent weeks, numerous Spurs attackers have stepped up their fitness after spells on the sidelines with various injury issues, handing Postecoglou the depth he’s craved in recent times.

Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odebert were both included from the first whistle this afternoon, but neither were able to get themselves on the scoresheet in North London.

However, both managed to feature for the entirety of the contest, but the same can’t be said about winger Brennan Johnson, who once again struggled to impress within the final third.

The Welshman started off the right-hand side of the front three, but failed to score for the third consecutive game after his double against Ipswich Town last month.

The 23-year-old managed just 29 touches during the draw, a tally lower than that of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who managed 47, showcasing the lack of impact he had on proceedings.

He also lost possession eight times, failing to complete any of his two attempted dribbles – looking toothless and unable to get the better of opposition full-back Milos Kerkez.

Johnson also failed to register a single effort on goal, winning just 25% of the duels he entered, subsequently resulting in his substitution at the break, replaced by match-leveller Son.

To compound the Welshman’s misery, he was handed a measly 3/10 match rating by Football London journalist Alasdair Gold – the joint-lowest of any Spurs player who’s started the meeting.

As a result of his lack of impact, Ange can’t take any chances, desperately needing to drop him ahead of Thursday’s crunch Europa League clash with AZ Alkmaar.

The Lilywhites enter the second leg a goal down following the meeting in the Netherlands a few days ago, with the Aussie needing to consider other options than Johnson after his dismal showing.

Ryan Higgins superb all round as Middlesex defeat Glamorgan

A superb all round performance from Ryan Higgins saw Middlesex to victory over Glamorgan, despite a fastest ever T20 half-century for the Welsh county by captain Kiran Carlson.Higgins hit 71 off 36 balls to steer his side to a total of 200, then took 3 for 20 with his seam bowling, including two wickets in two balls to change the momentum of the match.Glamorgan had looked to be romping to victory when they were 95 for 1 off 6.4 overs when Carlson was out for 77, scored off just 29 balls. It was a consolation victory for bottom-of-the-table Middlesex, Glamorgan just one place above them, with Ethan Bamber and Luke Hollman also taking three wickets each as Glamorgan slipped to 151 all out.Middlesex openers Stephen Eskinazi and Joe Cracknell treated the early deliveries from left arm spinner Prem Sisidoya with respect, but a reverse slog sweep for six off the final ball of the opening over lit the blue touch paper. With plenty of ramp and reverse shots, they accelerated to 69 without loss at the end of the powerplay, with both openers 33 not out.Spin was proving harder to get away and the first wicket fell with Cracknell trying to ramp Sisodiya. Eskinazi followed soon after, bowled giving himself room against Peter Hatzoglou.Max Holden was caught off a ramp shot to Hatzoglou, while the medium pace of Andy Gorvin trapped John Simpson lbw trying a reverse sweep.Luke Hollman hit a six first ball and was out second, bowled by Sisodiya, but as the wickets kept falling at the other end Higgins kept going whenever he was on strike. He went to his 50 with a six off Tom Bevan over midwicket and two runs off the last ball took his team to 200.Glamorgan were looking for an even faster start, Carlson scoring 19 out of 20 taken from the first over by Joshua De Caires. The opening partnership reached 39 before the end of the third over, when Sam Northeast went for just 2 – showing how dominant Carlson had been in the early stages. The 50 came up in the fourth over. Carlson brought up his two balls later off just 15 deliveries. Glamorgan reached 87 at the end of the powerplay with Northeast and William Smale having contributed two runs each compared to 70 from Carlson.Carlson was finally out for 77, caught and bowled by Hollman clutching onto a fiercely hit flat-batted shot. However the atmosphere changed as Glamorgan lost two wickets in two balls Smale lbw to Higgins and the Chris Cooke caught behind first ball.Another burst of two wickets in two balls changed the momentum back to Middlesex, Colin Ingram was lbw to a ball which appeared to pitch comfortably outside leg stump, then next ball Timm van der Gugten was caught and bowled by Ethan Bamber to give him his third wicket.Another caught-and-bowled, this time to Higgins, saw the end of Bevan, Sisodiya also skying the ball to depart after a brief cameo as Glamorgan subsided to 151 all out.

Sheffield United advancing for "great" star with 20 Championship goals

Already setting their sights on summer reinforcements, Sheffield United are now reportedly set to accelerate their move to sign a former Championship star for Chris Wilder.

Sheffield United already preparing for Premier League

Sat second in the Championship with two points separating themselves and Burnley in third place and the same gap standing in the way of leaders Leeds United, Sheffield United are once again on course to secure promotion. With just nine games left to play, Wilder could guide his side back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

As the Blades discovered last time out, however, there’s still plenty of drama to come, with Mark Sykes’ last-gasp equaliser earning a point for Bristol City to dent Sheffield United’s promotion charge.

Those at Bramall Lane will be desperately hoping that the draw was a blip and only that as they begin to set their sights on potential reinforcements in the even of promotion.

Having got things so wrong last season too, Sheffield United will be well aware just how important it is that they get their recruitment spot on this time around. And that could see a midfield star make his return to English football.

According to Fanatik in Turkey, Sheffield United are now set to accelerate their move to sign Gabriel Sara from Galatasaray this summer in what would see them finally secure the signature of a long-term target.

Galatasaray'sGabrielSarashots at goal Andreas Hillergren

The former Norwich City midfielder swapped Carrow Road for Turkey last summer, leaving for a reported €18m (£15m), but could be on his way back to English football just one year later.

Whether the Brazilian is in Sheffield United’s price range remains to be seen, however, especially if Galatasaray look to make profit on the 25-year-old just one summer after his arrival.

"Great" Sara is Premier League-ready

Having never stepped into the Premier League during his time at Norwich, Sara could finally get the chance to make his mark on the top flight if Sheffield United earn promotion and come calling this summer. Following a year at Galatasaray, in which he has featured in the Europa League, the 25-year-old is more than ready to take that chance too.

Earning plenty of praise during his time at Carrow Road, David Wagner told reporters when asked about Sara last season: “He works hard. He can easily run between 12 and 13 kilometres and has great vision. He is an outstanding player and a top professional.

“He always has ‘team first’ in his head, and it is something very special to have a player who is producing these numbers but has this in their head.”

With 20 Championship goals to his name throughout his career, Sara’s quality is one that Sheffield United know all about. Whether they can secure his signature this summer will likely rely solely on just how successful their push for promotion turns out to be, however, as they fight for an instant return to the top flight.
