Man Utd aiming to hijack move to sign Real Madrid's top target in £42m deal

In what would be quite the move, Manchester United are now reportedly aiming to hijack Real Madrid’s attempts to sign their top target this summer in a deal worth around £42m.

Amorim expresses Man Utd frustration

Even Ruben Amorim wouldn’t have been aware of just how difficult a job he had on his hands when he arrived a number of months ago, but the reality has since hit him in the most ruthless fashion. The former Sporting boss arrived with all the hope in the world that a young, ambitious manager would finally have what it takes to turn things around at Old Trafford.

Man Utd now open to selling star to fund move for "world-class" £62m striker

The Red Devils could cash in on a first-team player, following a very disappointing performance against Nottingham Forest.

Now in April, however, the squad that Erik ten Hag left behind has failed to adapt to his 3-4-2-1 system and it’s clearer than ever that Manchester United simply cannot afford to get things wrong this summer. Without back-to-back Premier League wins all season, the Red Devils had their latest moment to forget against Nottingham Forest – losing 1-0 courtesy of Anthony Elanga.

Amorim expressed his frustration over the result as his side took one step forward and two steps back once again. He told reporters: “It’s more [of] the same since this season began. So I think if you look at the game we are improving the way we play football.

“We are creating more chances, we are dominating more games. But in the end, when you don’t win, you feel that and that is a good thing. So we know that this season is going to be like that, the momentum. So we continue to go to the next [game].”

Go again is exactly what United must do too, with the Manchester derby awaiting in a run of crucial games towards the end of the campaign.

With key clashes in the Europa League – arguably United’s last chance to qualify for European football – Amorim will be desperate to avoid a repeat of the Forest result and kick on once more at Old Trafford.

Man Utd target Hincapie hijack

One way to ensure that results such as the one against Nottingham Forest becomes less of a habit is to welcome some much-needed defensive reinforcements. And if reports are anything to go by, INEOS are well aware of that.

According to TeamTalk, Manchester United are now aiming to hijack Real Madrid’s move to sign Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen, who value their central defender at €50m (£42m) this summer.

Described as “athletic”, “physical” and “quick” by analyst Ben Mattinson, 23-year-old Hincapie could go from a Leverkusen invincible to Manchester United saviour this summer. Having already reportedly made contact over a move, the Red Devils’ plot to seal an ambitious hijack on Madrid seems on.

'No concrete decisions' yet on Pakistan coaching changes – Zaka Ashraf

PCB chairman says cricket committee headed by Misbah-ul-Haq will be part of the process to decide whether changes are needed

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Aug-2023PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf has said that “no concrete decisions” have been taken regarding the composition of Pakistan’s coaching and management staff, addressing speculation over whether there would be changes made under the new PCB administration. In an interview with Cricket Pakistan, Ashraf said the decision would be made on the recommendation of a newly-formed cricket committee headed by former captain and national coach Misbah-ul-Haq.”I don’t think it matters whether coaches are local or foreign,” Ashraf said. “There’s no concrete decision on whether to change coaches as of now. I’ve created a committee headed by Misbah-ul-Haq. That committee will look at all cricketing matters and will consult any cricketers they want to be a part of it. When they give us their final analysis, I’ll get involved in the discussion and we’ll make a joint decision that is in the best interests of Pakistan cricket.”It is the first time there has been any official communication from the PCB about the fate of the Pakistan men’s coaches since the recent tour of Sri Lanka, where Pakistan won the Test series 2-0. Over the past week, ESPNcricinfo understands there were robust internal discussions on the fate of the coaches and team manager, with some reports suggesting an immediate change was inevitable.Mickey Arthur was appointed Pakistan team director in April, with Grant Bradburn, who previously served as Pakistan’s fielding coach, becoming head coach the following month. Rehan-ul-Haq, who was general manager of Islamabad United for all eight seasons in the Pakistan Super League, was appointed team manager of the national side. Each of those appointments took place during Najam Sethi’s interim six-month stint as PCB chairman. While the committee is yet to formally convene, Misbah has in the past made clear his disapproval of some of the coaching arrangements. He called the PCB’s pursuit of Arthur under Sethi “a slap on Pakistan cricket”, and had replaced Arthur as Pakistan head coach in 2019.The simmering unrest comes ahead of a busy time for the Pakistan side, who return to Sri Lanka to play a three-ODI series against Afghanistan, before co-hosting the Asia Cup. They are then set to travel to India for the World Cup. The PCB has repeatedly said travel to India for the World Cup will be contingent on government approval and mutual agreement on appropriate venues, a point Ashraf repeated in this interview.

Tudor wants a defensive makeover at Juventus for the upcoming season with the Croatian manager looking to add reinforcements. After failing to land Renato Viega from Chelsea, the club are now looking to sign Aguerd from West Ham, as per .

Tudor wants Juventus to add defensive players that can actually hold and control the backline, something the team have been missing. Juventus, in their effort, have permanently signed Lloyd Kelly for €17.5 million (£15m/$20m) from Newcastle United. While Tudor's side were also interested in Viega, who impressed during his loan at Turin, the Italian side couldn't match the London club's transfer fee. They have now identified Aguerd as a promising figure to lead the backline but might have to offer Daniele Rugani to West Ham in return.

Juventus general manager Damien Comolli wants to make big changes at the club. The Italian side were also considering replacing Tudor, but the Croatian's last-minute effort changed the feeling around him for the club to then extend his contract for two years. Now, Comolli also wants to sort the internal structure of the club and has also made his first few calls starting with promoting Giorgio Chiellini to the position of director of football strategy.

Defender Bremer is expected to return early at the onset of next season after his knee injury last October. This will strengthen the squad, but gaps are evident as the club look into the possibility of adding another left-footed player. At the front, Randal Kolo Muani's situation hasn't progressed, although Juve will retain his services till the culmination of the Club World Cup.

Tudor's side will face Wydad Casablanca on June 22 at Lincoln Financial Field in Pennsylvania.

Karun Nair, Shreyas Gopal move out of Karnataka

Nair will play for Vidarbha and Shreyas for Kerala; KV Siddharth and Rohan Kadam move to Goa

Shashank Kishore27-Aug-2023

Karun Nair’s last first-class game was the Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Uttar Pradesh in June 2022•PTI

Karun Nair and Shreyas Gopal, two key members of Karnataka’s double-treble winning sides, have obtained NOCs from the KSCA to play for Vidarbha and Kerala, respectively, in the upcoming domestic season.Nair, the former Karnataka captain, scored 11 hundred and 16 fifties in first-class cricket for the state, with a best of 328 in the 2014-15 Ranji Trophy final against Tamil Nadu. The weight of those runs in only his second season put him in contention for a slot in the national side, with a Test debut coming a year later, against England, a series in which he became only the second Indian to score a triple-hundred in Test cricket.Nair’s move comes at a time when he hasn’t been in consideration across formats for Karnataka. His last first-class game was the Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Uttar Pradesh in June 2022.At Vidarbha, Nair will be reunited with his one-time Karnataka teammate Ganesh Satish, with whom he won the Ranji Trophy for Karnataka in 2013-14. Nair will head into the new season on the back of an excellent club cricket stint in the UK.In the time that Nair has found himself out, Karnataka have seen the emergence of two young middle-order batters Nikin Jose and Vishal Onat. Jose had a breakthrough season, scoring 547 runs in 13 innings at an average of 49.72 in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy. His temperament came in for special plaudits, earning him a call-up to the India A squad for the recently concluded Emerging Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.Onat batted in just five innings, and had a mellower season in comparison, but the Karnataka selectors believe he is worth investing in. The presence of these two young batters, in addition to the experienced Mayank Agarwal, Devdutt Padikkal, R Samarth and Manish Pandey, could have made it difficult for Nair to get regular game time.Meanwhile, Shreyas’ move to Kerala comes at a time when they are looking to strengthen their spin-bowling core alongside Jalaj Saxena, their other professional. Shreyas’ stint with Karnataka was no less rewarding. He broke through in 2013-14 and picked up a hat-trick against Rest of India to clinch the Irani Cup. For a better part of the next five seasons, he was a key allrounder for Karnataka across formats. However, recently, as it happened with Nair, regular game time eluded him, especially in the white-ball formats, which led him to look for opportunities elsewhere.Karnataka also have two others – middle-order batter KV Siddharth and top-order batter Rohan Kadam – moving out to play for Goa. Siddharth was the side’s leading run-getter in the 2021-22 Ranji season, while Kadam, largely seen as a T20 batter, briefly hit the high notes in topping the runs chart at the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s in 2018-19.

Samit Patel to leave Notts after 22-year career

Nottinghamshire have announced the departure of former England allrounder Samit Patel after more than two decades at the club.Patel, who turns 39 in November, is set to play on, with Derbyshire understood to be favourites for his signature.Patel made his first-team debut for Notts in 2002, going on to play more than 600 games across formats and collecting six major trophies, including the County Championship twice and the T20 Blast twice. He was also capped 60 times by England between 2008 and 2015.”It has been a privilege and an honour to represent Nottinghamshire, a place that I have called home for nearly three decades,” Patel said. “The club has played a huge role in developing the young nine-year-old I was when I joined the club into the cricketer I am today.”I look back on my career at Trent Bridge with tremendous affection; some of my fondest memories have come whilst donning the green and gold in front of the best fans in the world, engaging in battles on the field and winning trophies for the club.”When I signed my first contract at 15, I dreamt of representing my country in all three formats. I have no doubt that the club’s unwavering support helped me to achieve these goals and, for that, I will be eternally grateful.”Nothing would have given me greater pleasure than to see out my career with Notts, but whilst I haven’t been offered a new contract at Trent Bridge, I feel determined that I still have a lot to offer the game with both bat and ball. I’m looking forward to beginning my next chapter, contributing on and off the field wherever those opportunities may arise.”Finally, thank you to all the members, supporters, staff and team-mates who have walked through the gates at Trent Bridge. If it was not for you guys, I would not be the man I am today.”Patel played in the Twenty20 Cup in its inaugural season and has the most appearances and second-highest number of wickets (208) in the history of England’s T20 competition. This season, he played in 12 out of Nottinghamshire’s 15 Blast games, as they exited the competition at the quarter-final stage, scoring 136 runs and taking 11 wickets. In recent years, Patel has put his vast experience to use on the global T20 circuit, featuring in the PSL, CPL, LPL and Big Bash, as well as winning the 2022 Hundred with Trent Rockets.Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, Mick Newell, said: “Samit richly deserves the adulation he will get as his time at Notts comes to a close. That we associate him so closely with the club shows how important he has been in the successes we have achieved over the last two decades, and what a favourite he has become with our members and supporters.”To have his kind of longevity at one club is no mean feat, and speaks volumes of his passion for the county, and the regard in which he has been held by his coaches and peers across his career here.”I am grateful for his service to the club and the sacrifices he has made to wear the Nottinghamshire shirt. I know he has done so with immense pride, and that has played out in his performances on the pitch.”He always wanted to be the man to get Notts over the line, and credit has to go to him for that attitude which has served him and us so well over many years. He leaves us with our very best wishes for his next chapter, and the knowledge that he’ll always be warmly received as a visitor to Trent Bridge.”

Sandhu, Richardson unlikely heroes as Queensland ambush New South Wales

Queensland pacemen Gurinder Sandhu and Kane Richardson combined for the largest tenth-wicket partnership in Marsh Cup history and hoisted the Bulls to a stunning one-wicket defeat of New South Wales. The home side posted only 217 at the usually batter-friendly North Sydney Oval on Monday but looked on track to defend the total courtesy of allrounder Jack Edwards and debutant Jack Nisbet.Sam Heazlett had been the pick of the Bulls’ batters on Monday but when he edged Chris Green to Edwards at point, the visitors looked out of the contest at 146 for 9.Sandhu and Richardson were Queensland’s last hopes, and while both are competent with the willow, neither could be said to be a true allrounder. But the Queensland quicks struck up a 73-run partnership that yielded 12 boundaries and eclipsed the competition’s previous best 10th-wicket stand of 61.Sandhu was particularly influential, hitting Nisbet for back-to-back fours in the 31st over, while Richardson smacked the debutant over long on for a rare six two overs later. When Sandhu hit the ball straight down the ground from Edwards’ bowling, the target required was into single figures.Richardson belted the ball over long off and into the O’Reilly Stand for a six that sealed a famous victory for Queensland in the 38th over.”Best shot of the day, best shot of the season, maybe,” Sandhu said. “I had full trust in Kane and he had full trust in me. We just worked together, chatting every over, just trying to get each other through for the next one, and the next one and the next one. I couldn’t have done it without him, no way.”Sandhu had been similarly influential with his bowling, swinging the ball with ease and reducing NSW to 4 for 2 inside three overs. He could have had a third early wicket but was denied an lbw appeal against Moises Henriques, who went on to steady the NSW innings in a 126-run partnership with opener Daniel Hughes.Henriques brought up his half-century by pulling Matt Renshaw over deep midwicket for one of his four sixes and went on to make a match-high 82.But Jack Wildermuth broke the partnership when he caught Hughes at fine leg from Liam Guthrie’s bowling in the 22nd over, sparking a NSW collapse of 8 for 87.

Australia, India try to balance preparation and rest as World Cup looms

Big Picture: Will Australia test out Short?

The World Cup is nearly here, but not quite. These two teams will meet to open their campaigns on October 8 in Chennai, but first there are three games in six days that, while useful for fine-tuning plans, and for a number of key Australia players returning to action, will also provide a challenge in ensuring against any further last-minute injury alarms.Australia have suffered a big one in recent days with Travis Head’s fractured hand likely to rule him out of the World Cup. India, meanwhile, have some concerns over Axar Patel who is not available for the first two matches of this series.India are coming off their Asia Cup success where they skittled Sri Lanka for 50 in the final and Australia arrive having seen a 2-0 series lead overturned by South Africa into a 3-2 defeat. In terms of performances, form of players and confidence, there is probably more riding on these three games for them rather than India.Related

  • Rohit on resting Kuldeep: 'We don't want to expose him a lot'

  • Audition time for Ashwin and Washington, much to prove for Iyer and Suryakumar

  • Cummins: Australia can't afford to 'already be cooked' before starting World Cup

In the lead-up to the World Cup, Australia have not yet been able to have what could be considered a first-choice XI on the park. That combination has now been changed due to Head’s injury, but captain Pat Cummins, Steven Smith and Mitchell Starc are all back and Glenn Maxwell arrives on Friday. Smith will likely play all three matches and Cummins is also keen to. As far as Maxwell goes, there remains some uncertainty over how much condensed 50-over cricket he can get through. One intriguing name will be Matt Short, who has been called in for this series as Head’s replacement. As a destructive opener who can also bowl good offspin he is very much a like-for-like. It would be a meteoric rise should he make the final 15, but it can’t be ruled out.For India, the Asia Cup ticked a lot of boxes and they’ve taken the opportunity to give some of their big names a rest with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya sitting out the first two games of this series. The main interest is around R Ashwin and Washington Sundar, who will be vying to replace Axar should he be unavailable for more than two games. This will also be an opportunity for Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav to have some time in the middle. Iyer suffered a back spasm during the Asia Cup while Suryakumar played just once, making 26 off 34 balls in the defeat against Bangladesh.

In the spotlight: Ashwin’s chance and Cummins’ return

R Ashwin has not played an ODI since January 2022 and when a replacement was needed a few days ago for the Asia Cup final it was Washington who made the dash over. Still, should Axar not make the World Cup squad, Ashwin’s experience could yet tilt the scales his way. He and Ravindra Jadeja have certainly given Australia some sleepless nights in Test cricket.Pat Cummins was appointed Australia’s ODI captain last November, but has so far captained them in just two matches. He is entering this series off the back of a wrist injury sustained in the final Ashes Test and will strengthen a pace attack that was put under pressure in South Africa. However, there is also an interesting selection debate that could occur around Cummins if – or when – Australia only want to field two frontline quicks.

Team news: Ashwin vs Washington and Smith’s return

All three spin-bowling allrounders could play in the absence of the rested Pandya. The selectors may also consider giving Mohammed Siraj a game off after his Asia Cup heroics. Ishan Kishan will have the chance to open alongside the in-form Shubman Gill.India (possible): 1 Ishan Kishan, 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Shreyas Iyer, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 KL Rahul (capt, wk), 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Mohammed Siraj/Shardul Thakur, 11 Jasprit Bumrah. This game could give the first indication of how Australia plan to fit together Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, although they may look to squeeze in Short. Without Head, Maxwell or Ashton Agar, Tanveer Sangha could come into the mix. Starc isn’t available for this game, which could open the door for Spencer Johnson to make his ODI debut after he picked up a hamstring injury in South Africa. Sean Abbott and Nathan Ellis both left Johannesburg with injuries.Australia (possible): 1 David Warner, 2 Mitchell Marsh, 3 Steven Smith, 4 Marnus Labuschagne, 5 Alex Carey (wk), 6 Cameron Green, 7 Marcus Stoinis, 8 Pat Cummins (capt), 9 Spencer Johnson/Tanveer Sangha, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh Hazlewood.

Pitch and conditions

It’s early in the Indian season, but Cummins said he didn’t expect that to affect the surfaces much. Mohali hasn’t staged an ODI for four years, but has produced some high scores in the IPL. The forecast is for a hot, dry day.

Stats and trivia

  • The last ODI played in Mohali featured these two teams back in 2019 when Australia chased down a record 359 thanks to Peter Handscomb, Usman Khawaja and Ashton Turner.
  • Steven Smith needs 61 runs to reach 5000 in ODIs.
  • The last time India faced Australia in ODIs, Suryakumar Yadav bagged three consecutive golden ducks.

Palace, who stunned Manchester City in the 2025 FA Cup final, faced the threat of being removed from the Europa League next season due to being in breach of UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules. Textor held a 45 per cent stake in the Eagles while also overseeing events at Ligue 1 outfit Lyon, who are also due to take part in the Europa League. However, Textor has struck a deal with Woody Johnson, who owns the Jets NFL franchise, to buy his stake in the English team.

    WHAT TEXTOR SAID

That does not mean his involvement in English football is over, though, as he told : "We now have to look at our strategy in the UK, which we need to study. What will our new club be? Who will we buy there? What will the partnership be like? Because it is this collaboration between clubs that has been very successful for us. We have obviously done a good job here. And at Lyon, I am very proud, we had a team that was relegated. They had not been to the Europa League for a while, we brought them back for two years in a row."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lyon's relegation from Ligue 1 to Ligue 2 has sparked an angry reaction in France, with the team's supporters coming out to protest against Textor on Saturday. He has opted to step away from the club, confirming his desire to focus more on Brazilian club Botafogo.

He said: "I'm going to spend a lot more time thinking about Eagle globally, coming back to Botafogo more. I have great partners in Eagle Football Group, shareholders who are going to step up to deal with issues that I honestly wasn't very good at dealing with in France. I'm looking forward to reconnecting with Brazil. We're going to be fine there [in France]. We're going to put a strong face there.

"It's clear that I was better on the field when dealing with France. I didn't do so well in politics in France, that's well known. The process for me, as an American investor, to adapt to the system there has always been strange. But we are very well capitalised. We are going to invest a significant amount of money, we just sold Crystal Palace. We certainly don't have any financial difficulties; we've never had so much liquidity. But in the process, I did some things that disappointed the regulatory bodies there and we need to fix that."
