Hampshire dampen Surrey celebrations with rapid final-day victory

Four wickets fall inside half-an-hour’s play as County Champions end campaign with defeat

ECB Reporters Network29-Sep-2023Hampshire 219 and 172 (Vince 56, Jacks 5-87) beat Surrey 207 and 132 (Sudharsan 40, Dawson 4-53) by 52 runsHampshire dampened Surrey’s celebrations within half-an-hour’s play on the final morning at the Ageas Bowl, to become just the second team to beat them across their back-to-back LV= Insurance County Championship titles.Only Lancashire had beaten Surrey in red-ball cricket in either 2022 or 2023, winning once in each campaign. But Liam Dawson took his season tally to 49 wickets by taking two of the four wickets needed to secure victory, with Surrey only scoring 20 of the 73 required to lose by 52 runs before 11am.Despite the defeat, Surrey were presented with the Division One trophy by ECB chair, and former club chair, Richard Thompson.”It was a weird way to get over the line halfway through yesterday,” Surrey’s head coach, Gareth Batty, said. “But the County Championship is set up over six months – you don’t win it over one day or one game.”It is the marathon cup and you still have to still celebrate it and respect it, even if you are on the wrong end of the result today.Surrey had made it clear throughout the match that they had the intention to finish their triumphant season off with a victory. That plan was skewed somewhat after they were confirmed as champions before lunch on day three, and their celebrations continued after play concluded. It took five balls for Jordan Clark to advance to Mohammad Abbas and prod to James Vince at first slip.Jamie Overton came out and played a delicious straight drive, and then a powerful sweep shot. But he was less gainly when his agricultural swing saw him stumped by Ben Brown off Dawson, the start of three wickets to fall in 12 balls to end the year.Kemar Roach departed second ball when his wild swing flew to first slip, with the Abbas and Vince combo striking again. The Pakistan seamer ended the campaign with 53 scalps.Sai Sudharsan, with 73 in the first innings, batted sensibly until Dan Worrall arrived and hacked at one, at which point his stylish 40 turned more towards aggression. The Indian took on Dawson but only managed to top-edge to Vince running across from the slips to end the contest and the season.Batty admitted the result was a disappointing way to finish, but acknowledged the peculiar circumstances had played a part.”We completely understand why because we had already got to the point we had driven towards all season, and that was to lift the trophy again,” he said.”There was no blame to anybody or no nothing. We almost scratched today off because it was all about yesterday when we got over the line.”Hampshire finish third for a second year in a row having won eight times – the same as the champions.”It is nice to finish with a win. First of all though, credit to Surrey for winning it they have been the stand-out team across the whole season and they deserve to be champions,” James Vince, Hampshire’s captain, said.”We’ve finished off with three wins in a row including Essex and champions Surrey. We made finals day, lost in the final of the One Day Cup and finished third in the Championship. It is one of those years where you have been there or thereabouts in all competitions but have nothing to show for it.”It is tough to win trophies but we have been consistent across all formats for the last two or three years.”

Lewis-Skelly's first-team debut came before Christmas last season, and from there, his trajectory was nothing short of meteoric. He featured in 19 of the final 21 Premier League games of the campaign, showcasing composure and confidence well beyond his years.

Lewis-Skelly netted his first senior goal in Arsenal’s emphatic 5-1 triumph over Manchester City. His ability to carry the ball out from defence, coupled with precise passing, makes him one of the most coveted youngsters in Europe. He attracted attention from Real Madrid, but with his new deal sealed and signed, speculation about his future have been put to rest.

WHAT LEWIS-SKELLY SAID

Following the announcement of his new deal, Lewis-Skelly spoke with heartfelt emotion about what the club means to him.

"I'm so proud and happy," Lewis-Skelly said. "I know those words are simple, but I think they sum up how I feel signing for this club. I'm a fan and it's like a dream come true.

"I've embodied the values of Hale End and come through. I've still got a lot of years ahead of me, so if I can keep staying humble and being a good person, that's the most important thing to me. I know I've taken a lot of experience from the games about the positive moments, the mistakes that I've made. I'm definitely more ready now for the next season. I just want to keep learning and keep improving.

"I want a legacy. I want to win everything there is to win in the game. I want to win trophies on the biggest stages whilst being a person that's always learning and stays grounded, which is so important."

Lewis-Skelly’s breakout season also earned him a call-up to the senior England squad under new manager Thomas Tuchel. The teenager made an instant impact on the international stage, scoring in his debut against Latvia during the March World Cup qualifiers. At just 18 years and 176 days old, he became the youngest player to score for England on debut, surpassing the previous record held by Marcus Rashford.

Williams signs new long-term Athletic Club contract until 2035Barca claims transfer agreement was in placeCatalan club alleges Williams' agent of prioritising Bilbao's interestsFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Despite strong links with Barcelona, Williams surprisingly renewed his contract with Athletic Club. As per Cadanaser, Barcelona claim Williams himself had approached them, expressing a desire to join the Blaugrana. The Catalan club had already reached an agreement with the player on financial terms and contract length. However, Williams' agent, Felix Tainta, introduced a new demand: a "free release clause" in his Barcelona contract and a specific July registration date that Barcelona's board considered "unacceptable", leading to the collapse of the transfer.

Williams' rejection is a public setback for Barcelona's transfer strategy and financial management. The club had openly signalled its intent to sign Williams, with Barcelona president Joan Laporta even hinting at an "exciting next signing". The agent's demand for a "free release clause" underscores the ongoing concerns about Barcelona's ability to navigate La Liga's Financial Fair Play "1:1 rule" and the risks associated with major signings.

Sporting director Deco, however, has backup plans to solve the club's winger issues. Deco has two players he is interested in: Liverpool's Luis Diaz and Manchester United's Marcus Rashford. Both wingers are interested in joining the Blaugrana with Rashford going as far as offering to take a pay-cut.

Mark Wood targets 2025-26 Ashes after securing three-year ECB deal

Mark Wood says that the timing of England’s central contracts announcement is no excuse for the team’s flatlining performances at this year’s World Cup. However, he is already looking beyond this weekend’s clash with Australia in Ahmedabad towards the 2025-26 Ashes tour, after securing a lucrative three-year deal. With England rock-bottom in the World Cup standings after five defeats out of six, the timing of the announcement has attracted significant criticism. Speaking on a podcast this week, the former England captain Michael Vaughan claimed it was “disgraceful” that Wood’s fellow squad member David Willey had been overlooked in the ECB’s 26-player list – a snub that has played its part in Willey calling time on his international career. However Wood, who will be approaching his 36th birthday by the time the next Ashes tour comes round, believes that the deal – one of just three three-year contracts handed out, along those offered to Harry Brook and Joe Root – is the best way for him to manage his workload amid the competing temptations of the T20 franchise circuit, and ensure that he can give his all for England’s highest-profile engagements.”I’m delighted obviously,” Wood said. “It is security for me as an injury-prone lad. I had to think about my family, going forward. If I ever have trouble, I’ll be well looked after by the England physios. If you’re effectively self-employed, you go to these [T20] teams and say ‘who wants me?’ But if I have a bad season or you get a bad injury, who then looks after you? So now I’m looked after by England, and employed by England.”Wood is one of eight 2019 World Cup winners in England’s current squad, and like most of his team-mates, he has fallen well short of his highest standards in their title defence, claiming four wickets at 69.75 in six matches to date. “Everyone’s trying their nuts off,” he said. “It’s just not clicked the way that we want.”Nevertheless, Wood’s raw pace has been undiminished, and in the opening match against New Zealand at Ahmedabad last month, he clocked the fastest delivery of the tournament so far, at 154kph (95.6mph).Wood has claimed just four wickets in a sorry World Cup campaign•Getty Images

And for that reason, he remains a key asset as England look towards the 2025-26 Ashes tour. On the last trip Down Under in 2021-22, Wood was his team’s outstanding performer in an otherwise dreadful campaign, claiming 17 wickets at 26.64, including a career-best 6 for 37 in the fifth Test at Hobart.Last summer, Wood’s impact was even more spectacular. He had not played competitively since the IPL in April, but he was recalled for the third Ashes Test at Headingley in July, where his first-innings 5 for 34 launched a famous fightback from 2-0 down to square the series 2-2.After the Ashes, Wood did not play again for two months, as he sat out of the Hundred and England’s white-ball home series against New Zealand to rest up ahead of the World Cup. That need to manage his workload, set against the need for an elite sportsman to maximise their earning potential during their athletic prime, meant that the ECB’s three-year offer was a compelling arrangement for both England and Wood himself.”The ECB had mentioned that, if I could keep up my standards and my pace, the Ashes away was the tour that they wanted me to get to,” Wood said. “I don’t think I could cross over loads of franchise and ECB, it just would have been too much with my injury record.”The ECB’s reworked contracts are also intended to stave off the threat of full-time franchise deals, that could eventually result in many of the sport’s biggest names appearing for IPL-affiliated teams all around the world, particularly in the newly launched leagues in the USA, UAE and South Africa.Wood, who claimed 5 for 14 on his debut for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL in April, would have been a prime candidate for such a deal, and his £400,000 to play for Delhi Capitals in the ILT20 had created a potential clash with England’s Test tour of India next year. However, he insisted that his desire to play for his country trumped all other considerations.”I’ve always wanted to play for England,” Wood said. “That was always what I’ve wanted to do as a kid growing up. I’m going to have to be a bit better that I have been at the minute, but I’d love to be part of everything going forward.Related

When asked if he felt that the players had too much power in the sport’s current climate, Wood added: “I think it depends on each individual. Everyone will have different motivation, whether it’s money-orientated or whatever, but from my point of view, I wanted to play for England. You’re well looked after playing for England, and there are amazing things that come with England. A three-year deal? Why would I not be delighted with that?”The challenge for England’s players now, however, is to live up to the expectations that come with their new deals, and Wood admitted that the team’s displays at the World Cup had not been good enough.”I don’t think they were a distraction, but I can understand peoples’ frustration,” he said. “Obviously when lads are rewarded with things, and then they don’t perform at the level that you think, that’s justified.”People do it all the time, don’t they? Footballers get it, but it’s not through lack of trying. We are trying our hardest to get this right. We’re putting in extra work. Just look at the net sessions. It doesn’t feel any different.”There’s no cracks in the group. There’s no falling out. Everyone is generally trying to do it for each other. We believe in each other. It’s just not happening the way we want.”

Gill, Siraj lead big Indian splash at the top of ICC ODI rankings

Shubman Gill is the new No. 1 ODI batter, leapfrogging Babar Azam, while Siraj has reclaimed the top spot on the bowling table

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Nov-2023Shubman Gill has claimed the top spot in the men’s ODI batting rankings, going past Babar Azam on the table. An Indian is at the top among ODI bowlers too, with Mohammed Siraj moving up two spots and displacing Shaheen Shah Afridi from the perch. The top of the bowling table, in fact, has a very Indian look to it, with Kuldeep Yadav now in the top five, and Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami in the top ten as well, while Virat Kohli, after two unbeaten centuries and four half-centuries at the World Cup, has moved up three spots to No. 4 among the batters, just one rating point behind Quinton de Kock, the leading run-scorer at the World Cup right now.Gill has had a stellar year in ODI cricket, tallying 1449 runs so far from 26 matches, in which he has hit four centuries including a double-century. His average is a stunning 63.00 for the year, as against an overall career average of 61.02. Is India's bowling attack the best ever at a World Cup?

Babar hasn’t had a bad World Cup himself with four half-centuries in eight innings, but the gap between him and the rising Gill was so slim that he had to do more to hold on to the spot he had owned for more than two years. From India’s point of view, Gill has become the fourth player from the country to be the top ODI batter in the ICC rankings, after Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Kohli. The best individual batting performance of the World Cup so far, meanwhile, came on Tuesday night in Mumbai when Glenn Maxwell put in a superhuman show to single-handedly take Australia past Afghanistan and into the World Cup semi-finals. That unbeaten double-century helped him move up two spots to sixth, while the game’s other centurion, Ibrahim Zadran, is up six spots to 12th following an impressive World Cup campaign. Fakhar Zaman, another batter who has played a big role in his team’s fortunes, is just outside the top ten for batters, at No. 11, up three spots.Full rankings tables

On the whole, the rankings reflect India’s dominance at the World Cup so far where they have won eight out of eight league-stage matches so far, all by significant margins. Kohli (No. 2 behind de Kock) and Rohit Sharma (No. 5) have been their most prolific batters so far, but it’s their bowling that has been truly blockbuster. None of them are in the top-three in the wicket-takers’ list, but Shami (16 wickets in four games), Bumrah (15 in eight), Ravindra Jadeja (14 in eight), Kuldeep (12 in eight) and Siraj (ten in eight) have performed as a pack, and in their last three games, India have bowled out England for 129, Sri Lanka for 55, and South Africa for 83.Siraj, following 3 for 16 and 1 for 11 against Sri Lanka and South Africa respectively earlier in the week, has moved up from third to first. Afridi, No. 1 the previous week, is now down to fifth, with spinners Keshav Maharaj and Adam Zampa, the second-highest wicket-taker at the World Cup currently, going up to No. 2 and No. 3.As for the Indians, Kuldeep is up three places to fourth, Bumrah is up three spots to eighth, and Shami is up seven places to tenth.Of the other top wicket-takers at the World Cup at this point, Dilshan Madushanka has moved up 31 spots to No. 45, and Marco Jansen has gone up nine positions to joint 24th.

Take a look at Norway's squad and, on paper, they could be a dark horse for any tournament. With representatives from Barcelona, Lyon, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Arsenal, among others, and some of the very best players on the planet within their ranks, this is a team that one would expect to be a regular in the knockout stages at major tournaments. Yet, in the words of Caroline Graham Hansen at the 2023 Women's World Cup, Norway "go from championship to championship and underperform".

Those comments from the Barca winger came after Norway had suffered a shock defeat to New Zealand in the opening fixture of that tournament. It was the Football Ferns' first-ever World Cup win. "We can't do anything. Then it's a loss," Graham Hansen added, in one of many short and understandably frustrated answers to .

Drawn alongside New Zealand, Switzerland and the Philippines, Norway were expected to storm out of the group and have themselves a strong tournament for the first time in a while. Instead, they qualified in second and were comfortably beaten by Japan in the last 16.

There are parallels to that World Cup at this summer's European Championship, where Norway will once again, despite recent failures, go into their group as the heavy favourites to finish top. Alongside hosts Switzerland, who have never made it to the knockouts at the Euros; Iceland, who have one win in this competition in their history; and Finland, who haven't progressed to a quarter-final since their home Euros in 2009; this is a big opportunity for a squad boasting players like Graham Hansen and Ballon d'Or winner Ada Hegerberg. But will they take it?

  • Getty Images

    Top quality squad

It's hard to overstate just how many good individuals are in this Norway team, and it feels important to highlight when discussing their surprising shortcomings. Hegerberg and Graham Hansen are the two stand-out stars, the former a six-time European champion and the all-time top goal-scorer in Women's Champions League history, the latter a three-time Champions League winner who finished as runner-up in the Ballon d'Or voting last year.

But it's easy to pick out so many other names in Gemma Grainger's squad, too. Frida Maanum and Ingrid Engen are also Champions League winners, Maanum just this year with Arsenal and Engen twice with Barca; Guro Reiten has been a stalwart in a Chelsea side that has dominated England for the last five years, helping them win the treble last term; Tuva Hansen was another player who picked up three trophies this past season, at Bayern Munich.

Throw in the Atletico Madrid duo of Vilde Boe Risa and Synne Jensen and the Manchester United trio of Elisabeth Terland, Lisa Naalsund and Celin Bizet and there is no shortage of top-level talent in Norway. Signe Gaupset is one of the most exciting teenagers on the planet, too.

    Over a decade of disappointment

This has rarely translated to international success, though. When Norway reached the final of Euro 2013, there was understandable excitement about the future. After all, both Hegerberg and Graham Hansen were still just 18 years old, with future Chelsea captain Maren Mjelde, who is still part of the team today, named to the Squad of the Tournament.

They've struggled to hit those heights since, though. The next two European Championships have seen Norway fail to get out of the group stage, with the lowlight of those two tournaments certainly the 8-0 thumping at the hands of England in 2022. At the World Cup, the last 16 was as far as the Scandinavian nation would go at the 2015 and 2023 editions, with a quarter-final in 2019 the highlight of the last 12 years for a team with the talent to do much more.

  • Getty

    Chaos and crisis

The 2023 Women's World Cup was particularly disappointing. Given Norway went into that tournament with Hegerberg back in the squad, having declared herself unavailable until improvements were made within the national team some six years earlier, her return felt like a sign that progress was being made. But the summer was characterised by chaos and crisis.

There were issues that weren't necessarily under the control of head coach Hege Riise, such as the lack of real defensive depth, but there were decisions made by the former England interim boss that certainly raised eyebrows, such as when she dropped Graham Hansen for Norway's second game, which ended in a draw that put the team in serious danger of going out in the group stages, and her persistence on playing Reiten centrally rather than out wide.

It all came to a head the day before Norway's final group-stage game when reported that several players in the squad had reacted strongly to Riise's leadership style at the tournament, with them unhappy at the "lack of match management, unclear messages, few concrete measures and feedback when Plan A does not work", among other things.

Unsurprisingly, despite Norway winning that final group game to progress to the last 16, Riise left her role following the 3-1 loss to Japan in the knockout stages.

    New guidance

The identity of Riise's successor was something of a surprise, but Grainger certainly ticked the external box that many Norway players reportedly wanted when Riise was appointed. Having come through the England youth set-up, the 42-year-old had spent the previous three years in charge of Wales, whom she couldn't steer to a first major tournament despite coming close.

Grainger admitted at the time that she had "no intention" to leave her post with Wales, but that Norway presented her with "an unexpected opportunity" that she "could not turn down". Given the incredible quality in the Norway squad and the potential this team has to take serious leaps on the continental and world stages, her reasoning made sense.
