Keshav Maharaj caps unlikely World Cup comeback with cathartic winning role

Keshav Maharaj was just having dinner around the time when Pakistan’s concussion substitute Usama Mir pinned Rassie van der Dussen lbw for 21. South Africa were 121 for 3 at that point, needing a further 150 runs off almost 30 overs. Given South Africa’s gun middle-order – Aiden Markram at No.4, Heinrich Klaasen No.5 and David Miller at No.6 – Maharaj might have felt like he could just put his feet up during the chase, having put in a shift with the ball in Chennai’s oppressive heat. But it eventually came down to him scoring the winning runs for South Africa with No.11 Tabraiz Shamsi at the other end, lifting the lid on what had become a cauldron of immense tension at Chepauk. When left-arm fingerspinner Mohammad Nawaz darted one into the thigh from around the wicket, Maharaj coolly shuffled and played a half-pull, half-paddle, directing the ball between midwicket and short fine leg. He also comfortably beat the man on the square-leg boundary.”I think it was a surreal moment,” Maharaj said after South Africa’s one-wicket triumph. “You always dream of winning games for your country, but winning games in a World Cup…it’s very special. Those are the moments that you cherish, building up towards the tournament.”To be honest, there were a lot of thoughts running through my head. I was just watching the ball and fortunate enough I was in a position where I could just score and place it in the gap.”Maharaj wasn’t supposed to be ready for the World Cup in the first place. But he made a remarkable return – a ruptured Achilles tendon usually takes nine months to heal but he was back on the park in less than six – to make it to India. He has roots in the country and now they’ve only grown stronger. On Friday, in front of almost 30,000 spectators in Chennai, he delivered a remarkable . He celebrated it with cathartic chest thumps and roars.”It was one of those moments for me,” Maharaj said. “I knew how big the win is for the team. I think that’s why the emotions were on a high.”Maharaj had got together with Shamsi, with South Africa needing 11 off 27 balls. Haris Rauf had just pulled off a sensational one-handed return catch in his follow-through to dismiss Lungi Ngidi for 4. Shamsi had to see off three legal balls from Rauf and then front up to an over from Mohammad Wasim, who was getting the ball to fizz off the Chepauk deck. But the last-wicket pair knocked off those 11 runs in as many balls to seal the deal.Related

“Fortunately enough, the batters set a bit of foundation and we didn’t have too much [to score] at the back end, so yes, now and then there was a ball to take a risk,” Maharaj said. “But if you look at the bigger picture, with 40 balls to go…we knew if we batted those 40 balls, we would be able to score. Yeah, I had to fight temptation now and then, but I knew if we could take it deep, we could cross over the line.”Maharaj is a capable batter with two first-class centuries and five Test fifties to his name. But did he trust Ngidi and Shamsi to stick around with him, when the Pakistan quicks were generating some serious reverse-swing?”Yeah, definitely,” Maharaj said. “It’s easy for me to stand here and lie to you guys [laughs]. I genuinely did. Especially Lungi, he showed that he could stick around, especially in the game against Netherlands. We had simple plans and unfortunately, he got out to a really good ball and a good catch. Shammo and I have played a lot of cricket together and he’s pretty much like me when it comes to the hamster running in the head, but I’m really glad that he held his nerve. We just kept it simple. And he said to me he’s seeing it [the ball] big.”Maharaj was also particularly happy with the depth in South Africa’s attack. Prior to the start of the World Cup, Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala were both ruled out with injuries and, during the tournament, they’ve had to deal with niggles to Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada, who missed this match after a back spasm. But Gerald Coetzee has emerged from the fringes and has become South Africa’s enforcer in the middle overs. He has taken 10 wickets in five matches between overs 11 and 40 – the most by any fast bowler during this phase in this World Cup. And in Lucknow and Chennai, where the pitches are traditionally slow and low, they’ve paired Shamsi up with Maharaj.”Fortunately enough, we have a lot of depth from a fast bowlers’ perspective,” Maharaj said. “And I’m really pleased to see Gerald come through leaps and bounds. It just shows the quality that we have in our squad and I’m especially really happy for Shammo. He’s done an amazing job. He’s done some really hard yards in the nets and it’s good to see it pay off.”South Africa picked both Maharaj and Shamsi to do the job with the ball at Chepauk. As it turned out, they finished the job with the bat, too, putting South Africa on the top of the standings.

Bayer Leverkusen director reveals how Liverpool beat Bayern Munich and Manchester City to secure Florian Wirtz transfer

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has opened up on how Liverpool beat Bayern Munich and Manchester City to secure the transfer for German sensation Florian Wirtz this summer. Wirtz opted to move to Anfield for a British record transfer fee of £116 million ($159m) despite strong interest from Bundesliga champions Bayern and the Cityzens.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Rolfes heaped praise on the Liverpool management for handling the entire process with utmost professionalism, while claiming the player was convinced of joining the English champions back in May. The sporting director further claimed that the German side were aware since February this year that the player had decided to move out of the club, although Leverkusen wanted him to stay at least for one more year.

  • WHAT ROLFES SAID

Speaking to , the Leverkusen official said: "Florian's requirement was that everyone be comfortable with the move. He told us, literally, that he hoped Bayer 04 would also be happy with the result. There wasn't a single moment (where we realised he wanted to leave), but rather a development. Our goal was to extend Florian's contract and keep him for at least another year. Gradually, we sensed that he was more interested in making a move. Starting in February and March, the discussions focused more on other clubs and other leagues. We always knew what he thought. We knew from the parents who they were talking to. The clubs from abroad (including Liverpool and Manchester City) also informed us, and they handled the matter in a highly professional and serious manner.

"In May, he told us that he had decided to join Liverpool FC. I believe he's a very good fit for Liverpool. The club has treated him very seriously. Florian was made to understand that they know exactly why they want him. This approach was a very important aspect of the overall package for him. All the clubs that had contacted us in advance were clear about the region in which the transfer would take place. We only negotiated with Liverpool after Florian told us that was his preferred club. It was clear to me from the beginning of the negotiations that it would work out. Of course, everyone is fighting for their position, but it was always respectful. The people at both clubs know each other so well that a face-to-face meeting was not necessary. We handled the transaction over the phone, via email, and via video conference."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rolfes added: "We as a club can be just as proud of it as Florian. We signed him at the beginning of 2020 at the age of 16 and built a very trusting relationship with him and his parents. He has matured into a global star with us. With his style of training, playing style, and his ambition, he has managed to take the club to a new level in the last five and a half years, together with the other players. He himself has improved every year. He's 22 now, and he's matured into a person who made this decision on his own. It's important that he stands behind his decision 100 percent."

Amelia Kerr shows her class in first appearance of WBBL season

The allrounder’s performance helped Brisbane Heat back to the top of the table

Amelia Kerr had an immediate impact on the WBBL•Getty Images

Amelia Kerr wasted no time making an impression on the WBBL with a starring all-round performance to put Brisbane Heat back at the top of the table after they had briefly been over taken by Sydney Thunder.Kerr, who Heat knew would have a delayed arrival when they took her as expected in the draft, guided the run chase after a miserly performance with the ball in her first appearance of the season.Kerr had success in her second over when she removed Heather Graham lbw amid a stuttering Hobart Hurricanes batting display and later added Ruth Johnston with her final delivery.Fellow spinner Charli Knott had struck early to claim the key wicket of Lizelle Lee with her first delivery of the game. When Hurricanes fell to 44 for 5 in the 10th over they had been left a mountain to climb although Elyse Villani held things together with an unbeaten half-century to give them something to bowl at.When Grace Harris was lbw to Molly Strano’s first ball – beaten by one which went on with the arm – there was belief in the Hurricanes camp and Shabnim Ismail removed Georgia Redmayne to leave them 26 for 2.However, from there Kerr had things under control with a 38-ball half-century, adding 57 for the third wicket with Mignon du Preez before Knott helped finish the chase.Ismail was again impressive with the ball, sending down 13 dots in her four overs.

Wakim century puts Tasmania on top of Victoria

Tasmania’s No.3 Charlie Wakim made an unbeaten 148, his second century of the Shield season so far, to put the visitors in a strong position against Victoria

AAP and ESPNCricinfo staff05-Nov-2023An unbeaten century by Charlie Wakim has put Sheffield Shield leaders Tasmania on top after day one of the clash with Victoria at the Junction Oval.Wakim finished the day on 148 not out and had guided the Tigers to 282 for 4 at stumps after the hosts had won the toss and elected to bowl. The day hadn’t started well for Tasmania with Matthew Wade ruled out prior to the toss due to back spasms that had also kept him out of the Marsh Cup match against Queensland last week. Jake Doran was called in for his first game of the season as the replacement wicketkeeper. But Wakim covered Wade’s absence. The 32-year-old shared a 147-run stand for the second wicket with Tim Ward that set the tone, with the opener compiling a patient 67. It is a record second-wicket partnership for Tasmania against Victoria in Shield cricket.Wakim brought up his century with a late cut to the boundary off spinner Todd Murphy. It was his third first-class century and second this season. The late bloomer made a century on debut for the Tigers in 2019, a brilliant 160 against South Australia, and this season he has looked at home at the top of the order. He made 110 earlier in this season against the Redbacks and has been a key reason why the Tigers have started the Shield season strongly.Victoria started the day well with veteran paceman Peter Siddle claiming Caleb Jewell early as he edged seaming delivery to Sam Harper. The hosts had a window of opportunity in the first session during Murphy’s opening over. Ward edged Murphy’s first delivery low to the boot of Peter Handscomb at slip. Next ball, Wakim offered a sharp chance to Travis Dean at short leg but it was dropped. The bowlers then toiled without joy until Ward drove to Dean at short cover off spinner Matt Short.Tasmania allrounder Beau Webster was with Wakim at stumps on a day when 38-year-old Siddle asked the most questions for Victoria with his probing seam bowling, having come into the side in place of Scott Boland who was rested.

Cox 90* gives Tigers first win; Shamsi and Zazai help Warriors to the top of the table

The Jordan Cox show put Bangla Tigers on the board and condemned Deccan Gladiators to their second defeat in three games in the final fixture of the Abu Dhabi T10 league on Thursday.Cox, after Gladiators had asked Tigers to bat, smashed eight fours and six sixes in a rollicking 36-ball 90 not out that gave Tigers 143 for 4, the highest total in the tournament so far. It became the highest-scoring match of the tournament so far too, as Gladiators gave it a good thump in the chase, putting up 123 for 3 with quick 40s from Nicholas Pooran and Fabian Allen keeping them in the contest, if only just. There were three ducks in the Tigers innings – Chris Lynn, David Miller and Daniel Sams totaling zero from seven balls between them – but with Cox in marauding form, they didn’t have much to worry about. Contributions also came from Kusal Mendis (19 in eight balls) and Dasun Shanaka (25* in 11).In reply, Gladiators’ batting star of the previous two games, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, was dismissed cheaply, but Andre Fletcher (17 in five balls) and Pooran kept them going. After Pooran was dismissed for a 17-ball 41, with Gladiators 72 away with 4.5 overs left, it was game on. But Andre Russell’s 11 not out took 17 balls, and despite Allen’s 40 not out in 16 balls, Gladiators ended well short.Hazratullah Zazai brought up his fifty with a six•Abu Dhabi T10

Shamsi and Zazai take Northern Warriors to the top of the table

Once Colin Ingram fell for 10 two overs later, Abu Dhabi struggled to get sizeable partnerships going as Shamsi removed Hales as well and only one of their next four batters dismissed reached double digits. Asif Khan scored a quick 19 off seven with two sixes to help Abu Dhabi reach 103 for 7.Lewis and Zazai crossed that target with an over to spare, facing 27 balls each of which 10 reached the boundary rope and five went over.
