The two Melbourne teams finished in the bottom two positions on the points table

Wet weather brought an end to drab WBBL campaigns from both Melbourne sides in Stars’ rain-affected derby win at the MCG on Saturday night.Annabel Sutherland top-scored as Stars were bowled out for 118, and Kim Garth’s early wickets in Renegades’ run chase gave Stars, the hosts for the game, the upper hand.Garth reduced Renegades to 12 for 2 inside three overs before rain temporarily forced players off the field and sent most fans in a crowd of 5933 heading for cover. Play returned for only another nine balls as Hayley Matthews (17 not out off ten balls) tried valiantly to put Renegades in front on the DLS chart. But Renegades’ 27 for 2 from 5.3 overs was still eight runs short of a par score when rain ended the match for good. The result left Stars (six wins in 14 games) and Renegades (two wins in 14) filling the bottom two places on the table. It was Stars’ fourth win from their last five matches, giving them an idea of what might have been had they started the season in better form. That’s that – the umpires break the news to the two captains•Getty Images

Garth, who returned figures of 2 for 2 in her two overs, dismissed Renegades openers Tammy Beaumont and Emma de Broughe within three balls in the third over of the innings after stand-in captain Sutherland (36) lifted Stars to a respectable total batting first.Sutherland smacked six boundaries in her 36 off 28 balls and put on a club-record fourth-wicket stand of 45 with Tess Flintoff (22 off 23 balls). Both Sutherland and de Broughe were out caught off Harmanpreet Kaur, who returned 2 for 13. Matthews (2 for 20), Georgia Prestwidge (2 for 27) and Georgia Wareham (2 for 18) were the other main wicket-takers.The rain-affected match was a disappointing end to former Australian international Jess Duffin’s professional career after the cross-code athlete announced her retirement before the match. Duffin didn’t bat or bowl but claimed he catch that dismissed Alice Capsey for a second-ball duck off Georgia Prestwidge’s bowling.Stars were again without regular captain Meg Lanning, who sat out the final three games of the season for personal reasons. Lanning announced her retirement from international cricket earlier this month, saying she had lost the hunger to perform at the international level.

Mitchell, coach Ronchi back NZ to adapt to Bangladesh conditions

The Sylhet Test will be NZ’s first in eight months and first in Bangladesh in ten years

Mohammad Isam26-Nov-2023Daryl Mitchell is looking forward to a bit of peace and quiet, after the World Cup humdrum, when New Zealand return to Test cricket after eight months in Sylhet. It will also be the first Test for both New Zealand and Bangladesh in the third cycle of the World Test Championship. Mitchell is coming off a strong run in the World Cup where he struck two centuries, both against India.”A bit more patience is required going from white ball to Test cricket,” Mitchell said. “You can breathe and relax a little bit. The surfaces are turning. We will keep adapting. We will see what we get on day one.”It is always special to play in that tournament in front of millions of people. It is also about recognising what an opportunity we have here at the start of the World Test Championship. How much it means to wear that baggy with the silver fern on.”He also said that New Zealand are focussing on short-term goals rather than thinking about the ultimate goal of reaching the WTC final.”We obviously know it is the end goal,” Mitchell said. “That’s what every country taking part in the World Test Championship wants to do. For us, it is about making small goals. Trying to tick off games as we go. First, we have to take on Bangladesh. It is always a tough challenge in Bangladesh.”Conditions are foreign to us as Kiwis so it is about adapting as quickly as we can to these surfaces, and getting stuck to win little moments. It is what we are speaking about. We are not looking too far ahead. At the same time, you want to be part of those big games. That’s why you play Test cricket.”Related

Ravindra is living his dream, and loving it

Sylhet, incidentally, has hosted just one Test previously but while conditions will be alien to both sets of players, New Zealand coach Luke Ronchi said that his side has developed their skills in the sub-continent. This, despite New Zealand having last played a Test in Bangladesh in 2013.”Ten years is a long, long time,” Ronchi said. “That’s when Ish Sodhi made his Test debut. Some of the guys were young so their style of play would have changed a lot. We played a lot of cricket in the sub-continent. We have toured Pakistan as well. The guys have their own tactics to play around the world.”You can see the reverse-sweep coming into it a lot more now. It makes life difficult for bowlers. But that’s how guys want to play. They need to adapt to that surface whichever way they think is the best way for them to score.”Ronchi said that the ODI World Cup in India on slow pitches has prepared them for the Test series on similar tracks in Bangladesh. “It would have been a big change if we came from the green wickets of New Zealand straight to Bangladesh,” he said. “But for the majority of our group here, they have been in the World Cup. They have been practicing on slower and turning surfaces so that it helps us in this Test series.”As for Mitchell, he put the World Cup behind him, though he savoured his presence in the ICC’s team of the tournament. “It is cool to be recognised with [a place in the World Cup team of the tournament]. It means you are contributing to the team and helping to win games,” Mitchell said. “There’s not much time to reflect. We are straight into Test cricket. You want to stay present, and be ready to go for the Test team. But also, a very special eight weeks in India. Those memories will last a lifetime.”

Shukri Conrad: 'If SA20 doesn't happen, we are not going to have Test cricket anyway'

South Africa’s national team will have to “find a way to co-exist” with the SA20 and not fight against its primacy in the calendar, according to Test coach Shukri Conrad. His concession comes after South Africa announced a makeshift squad including an uncapped captain to play two Tests in New Zealand next month, sparking criticism, particularly from Australia, that they were disrespecting the oldest format. But Conrad called for a more nuanced understanding and indicated both he and the players have accepted the necessity of the SA20 to secure the game’s financial sustainability in South Africa.Asked to respond to Steve Waugh’s Instagram post on the South African squad, which questioned if it was a defining moment for Test cricket, Conrad did not hold back. “I don’t think Steve Waugh is going to really care what I say but I love how everybody outside South Africa have become experts on South African cricket,” he said. “Our hand has been forced. Everybody understands the SA20 has to happen. SA20 has to happen because it is the lifeblood of South African cricket. If it doesn’t happen, we are not going to have Test cricket anyway. We’ve got to find a way to coexist with the league, we’ve got to co-exist with leagues around the world to ensure the sustainability of the game.”

Conrad was equally critical of those who drew up the calendar for putting the series in the same window as the SA20, though CSA maintained that the FTP was decided on before the league’s window was finalised. This account is disputed and insiders confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that CSA was already aware of when it planned to run the league when FTP talks happened. Either way, it has not left Conrad best pleased. “Yes, there was a cock-up, or somebody got it wrong with the scheduling, and this is why we find ourselves here,” he said. “It’s unfortunate but we all saw the value of the league last year.”CSA has also given an assurance that there will “not be any further clashes between our bilateral commitments and the SA20”, though the FTP has a three-Test, three-ODI and three-T20 visit from England scheduled for the 2026-27 season, and some part of that will have to be played in January.Related

But Conrad’s immediate concern is the series with New Zealand, which is South Africa’s second of the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and could see as many as seven debutants. Most of the squad named late last week played in a three-match series against West Indies A last month, so they have had recent, competitive, red-ball game time, and they will depart for New Zealand two weeks before the first Test and play a practice match in order to adapt to conditions. “What we’ve done is that I used the A side tour against West Indies as part of the prep. We are going to be leaving for New Zealand a few days earlier, so that we can prepare there,” Conrad said. ‘We leave on the 19th of January for the Test on the 4th of February.”And despite the patchwork nature of the squad, Conrad does not want them to be devalued and even backs their chances of pulling off a few surprises. “It’s still South Africa that’s going there. We don’t sing a different national anthem. We don’t wear a different blazer or anything like that. We are going to give it our best shot,” he said. “I hate the fact that South Africa go as underdogs because I don’t think we ever should be underdogs in anything that we do, but we do go as underdogs. Anything that we come back with, whether it is a draw or if we sneak a win, that’s going to be massive for us.”South Africa have only played two matches in the current WTC and have 12 points. They will only play two-Test series for the duration of this cycle.

Man Utd weighing up swap deal for Aston Villa's Emi Martinez after Andre Onana injury but could move for younger goalkeeper

Manchester United are plotting a swap deal to sign Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa after Andre Onana suffered an injury in pre-season training. The Red Devils are yet to approach the Villans with a formal offer but they are internally assessing their options of whether to go with current crop of young goalkeepers or sign an experienced campaigner like Martinez.

Manchester United were dealt a massive injury blow as their first-choice goalkeeper, Andre Onana, was ruled out of the club's pre-season with a hamstring problem. Early assessment of the player's condition suggested he could miss six to eight weeks of action; however, the reported earlier this week that the injury may not be as serious as initially feared.

now reports that, amid doubts over Onana's exact return date, United officials are internally assessing whether to proceed with their current crop of young goalkeepers or pursue a seasoned custodian like Martinez. The club could even consider offering players in exchange for the Argentine, although they are yet to initiate formal talks with Aston Villa.

Romano further claimed that finance could be a major deciding factor in the Martinez transfer as the Red Devils need to offload players to fund further investment in the summer transfer window after they completed the transfer for Matheus Cunha and are on the verge of signing Bryan Mbeumo.

Karun Nair to return to Northamptonshire in April

He will be available for seven County Championship fixtures till May, after going unsold in the IPL auction

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Jan-2024Karun Nair will return to Northamptonshire for seven County Championship fixtures in April and May after he went unsold in the IPL auction.Northants brought Nair in for the final three matches of last season as part of a failed bid to avoid relegation to Division Two, but his brief stint with the club was a success. He registered scores of 78, 150 and 21 in his three innings and John Sadler, Northants’ head coach, said Nair was his “main target” for 2024.”Not only did he score some incredible runs for us, his calmness, his temperament, and his hunger for more runs was superb,” Sadler said in a press release. “We are delighted to get him on board with us again and I’m sure he will be a super asset for us again this season.”His availability for the early stages of the season was unclear until mid-December due to the possibility of IPL commitments, after he was brought in as a replacement by Lucknow Super Giants midway through IPL 2023. But he went unsold at the mini-auction in Dubai, and has now committed to the first seven games of the Championship season.”I’m thrilled to be returning to Northamptonshire for another stint of County Championship cricket.” Nair said. “Our aim is to win games and get promoted and I’m excited to get stuck in with the bat and help the team secure victories.”I would like to thank the coach and captain for believing in me and giving me this wonderful opportunity. I was really happy with my form last season and hopefully I can get going right away and put big runs on the board.”Nair, 32, played six Tests and two ODIs for India, a brief international career which featured an unbeaten 303 against England in Chennai in late 2016. He remains one of two men to score a triple century for India in Tests alongside Virender Sehwag, who did so twice.Nair will be replaced by compatriot Prithvi Shaw midway through the English summer. Shaw agreed to return to the club for the second half of the season after a successful stint last year and is due to arrive in June after representing Delhi Capitals in the IPL.Chris Tremain, the Australian seamer, will feature alongside Nair as Northants’ second overseas player in the first month of the season, while the club recently announced that Sikandar Raza will join them for the T20 Blast.

Mitchell ruled out of second South Africa Test and Australia T20Is

The top-order batter has been carrying a long-term foot injury and will now aim to be fit for the Australia Test series

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Feb-20242:15

Stead: Williamson unlikely for Australia T20Is, Boult is available

Daryl Mitchell has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa and the T20I series against Australia in an attempt to recover from a long-standing foot injury.Mitchell, who averages 53.46 in Tests, has been carrying the problem for around six or seven months and was rested from the final T20I against Pakistan in January, but it has been decided he needs a longer period on the sidelines to give himself the best chance of being fit for the two-Test series against Australia.Related

Santner goes 'the other way' to rediscover his Test bowling

Jamieson, Santner bowl NZ to victory after Williamson's twin centuries and Ravindra's 240

“We took the opportunity to rest him a little earlier but after seeking medical advice on this as well it’s likely that he needs a longer period of time,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said. “It’s really tough, because there’s not a lot breaks coming up in the next wee while so thought this gives us nearly three weeks to try and give him the chance of the best recuperation from it.”There’s no guarantees this will still work in that period of time but we are very hopeful that it will improve his chances of getting through a longer stint with us.”New Zealand have not called up a replacement for Mitchell with Will Young the spare batter in the squad and he could come in as a like-for-like swap. However, there remains a chance the side may be rebalanced with Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner moving up the order and another pace bowler brought in with Stead confirming the uncapped Will O’Rourke remained in contention for a debut.”[Will Young] is definitely one of the options,” Stead said. “Will’s there as back up [and] Glenn Phillips has shown he’s more than useful and it could be shaped differently. We are very happy with the squad we have. Daryl’s obviously a huge loss, though, he’s been instrumental in a number of outstanding batting performances but it’s important for him and us that we get this right long term.”Meanwhile, Kane Williamson is unlikely to be available for the T20Is against Australia – a format where he is captain – as his wife is expecting their third child. However, Trent Boult could come into consideration for those matches with the left-arm quick not having any franchise commitments at that time.”Trent’s available if we want to select him,” Stead said. “Him and I are still having conversations…hopefully in the next couple of days to nail down what that looks like.”
