Isak can do the one thing for Liverpool that Haaland never did at Man City

Alexander Isak is finally a Liverpool player. That’s the headline. That’s the saga of the summer and that may well be the deal that commences not only more Anfield glory in the current campaign, but for years to come.

The Reds have been accused of not doing enough in the transfer window in the past. They welcomed a new manager in Arne Slot this time last summer and the only immediate arrival proved to be Federico Chiesa as doubts arrived over Richard Hughes’ ability to get the job done. One year on, those doubts are laughable.

The Reds are in a better place than ever to repeat the dominance that Anfield has been unfortunate enough to watch elsewhere in the Premier League era. But, it must be said, they still need to find a way to make sure all their new pieces connect to form another title-winning machine, especially Isak and Hugo Ekitike.

The Haaland mistake that Liverpool must avoid

On paper, it is the ultimate position of luxury to have two of the world’s best strikers at your disposal. Alas, things on the pitch are slightly different.

Unless managers are willing to sacrifice their systems and midfield numbers to have two strikers lead the line together, there’s a high chance that one high-level forward will have to settle for a place on the bench or an unfamiliar role. And all it takes is one look at Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez to realise how that problem ends.

julian-alvarez-manchester-city-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-mikey-moore

The Citizens had the world at their feet for four straight years in the Premier League, with Haaland breaking record after record along the way. Left to watch on, however, was the talented Alvarez. In an ideal world, Pep Guardiola would have found a way for them to click together on the pitch, but it just did not come.

The duo combined for just eight goals in 63 games and Alvarez’s compromise ultimately proved to be untenable as he departed to Atletico Madrid, becoming one of Europe’s most impressive players. It should be seen as one of Guardiola’s biggest regrets, given how they’ve struggled without the forward.

Whilst much of last season’s struggles will be put down to Rodri’s injury, and others that followed, there’s no denying that City became over-reliant on Haaland for goals. The Norwegian did his job – scoring 34 goals in all competitions – but this time there was no Alvarez to swoop in when City’s star suffered a rare off day.

Had Guardiola compromised to find a place for Alvarez, things could have been different for Man City last season. Instead, it was Diego Simeone who benefitted from handing the Argentine 30 starts in La Liga.

It’s not a problem that is going away anytime soon for City, either. This time, it’s Omar Marmoush missing out. The Egyptian arrived in January and handed City an instant attacking boost – scoring seven goals in 16 Premier League games – yet has already found himself pushed out to the left-hand side this season and didn’t start at all against Wolves.

Man City have inadvertently handed Liverpool the exact blueprint to avoid if they want to see both Ekitike and Isak thrive. Now, it’s down to Slot to keep both strikers happy.

How Liverpool could line-up with Isak & Ekitike

Will Slot change his system? Will Ekitike be left to settle for a place on the bench? Or will one find themselves out wide? Those are the questions that only Liverpool can truly answer after the international break, but they’ve certainly got options to ensure that both players enjoy the game time that they deserve.

The easiest way here is to start Ekitike out wide. Unlike Alvarez, the Frenchman has featured in that role before arriving in the Premier League and is arguably a similar profile to Liverpool’s current left-winger Cody Gakpo. Both are towering, physical figures who look to cut inside from the left using their skill and strength.

The Gakpo mould is one that Ekitike should follow if he wants to enjoy his best form from that side. The Dutchman started his Liverpool career as a No.9, before Slot arrived and moved him to the left of the front three. Since then, he has thrived.

Nothing has to be permanent, either. Isak’s injury history suggests that having a player like Ekitike available will prove to make all the difference for the Reds. In one move, Slot would be losing a world-class striker and replacing him with someone who has already stolen the headlines in a Liverpool shirt.

So, although Haaland and Alvarez’s failure should act as a firm warning, there is a way for Liverpool to march towards a successful title defence whilst enjoying both of their big-money strikers.

Star's transfer to Tottenham alive for January after Levy's previous £65m plan

Tottenham could sign a highly-rated player in the winter window, knowing that he was once keen on a move to N17.

The recent board restructure, which resulted in ex-chair Daniel Levy resigning and CEO Vinai Vinkatesham taking a more prominent role alongside members of the Lewis family, has prompted some optimism over their future recruitment plans.

Tottenham Hotspur manager ThomasFrankreacts after the match

Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol recently mooted the possibility of further squad investment from ENIC, who may now be willing to spend more on both wages and transfers overall to hand Thomas Frank the best chance of on-pitch success.

The Lilywhites are already one of world football’s highest revenue-generating clubs, according to the Deloitte Money League, and Levy’s success in turning the club into a financial powerhouse cannot be understated.

However, Levy’s reputation for underspending compared to rivals was a key complaint of his tenure, and arguably contributed towards Tottenham’s lack of silverware during the 24 years he was chairman.

Now, Spurs insist a “new era” has begun with the swathe of recent boardroom changes, and it will be very intriguing to see how the north Londoners tackle their first transfer market post-Levy.

Frank has overseen an excellent start to 2025/2026, and worked wonders to tempt Xavi Simons with a move to Tottenham, according to super agent Ali Barat.

Reports over the summer claimed that Frank was also really pushing to sign Man City forward Savinho, and the Dane apparently believed that he could do ‘big things’ in north London, as per the reliable Fabrizio Romano.

Pep Guardiola was publicly clear that he wanted to keep the Brazil international and a potential Spurs move ultimately fell through, with City rejecting two bids, including an offer just under £61 million (Fabrizio Romano).

Savinho transfer to Tottenham alive for January after previous Levy plan

As per journalist Dean Jones, speaking to TEAMtalk, Levy was prepared to pay up to £65m for Savinho in the summer, and Tottenham know the winger wanted to join them before deadline day on September 1.

Spurs are still keeping an eye on Savinho, and it is believed they could move in January if Frank’s side get enough encouragement.

Savinho has played just 37 minutes in all competitions so far.

This is partly down to injury, but if the ex-Girona star continues to be on the fringes of Guardiola’s plans, a January move could well tempt him.

Savinho faces a battle to get into the starting eleven on a regular basis amid Jeremy Doku’s sensational start to the season, and with the 2026 World Cup looming, the 21-year-old may fancy a move elsewhere as Frank’s side maintain a serious interest.

His best-ever campaign yielded 11 goals and 10 assists in 41 appearances for title-chasing Girona in 23/24, and Guardiola has called Savinho an “exceptional” player.

Real Madrid superstar tempted by Chelsea as new deal talks stall amid Alonso frustration

Chelsea have been informed that a Real Madrid superstar could now be tempted to join them.

Chelsea light in areas with transfer work still to be done

Enzo Maresca’s side edged past League One minnows Lincoln City by the skin of their teeth on Tuesday night, despite fielding a largely strong side including a host of senior stars.

Rob Street’s deserved Lincoln opener just before half-time threatened to knock Chelsea out of the Carabao Cup in very early and humbling fashion, but Maresca was rescued by an excellent strike from Tyrique George and a second goal from summer signing Facundo Buonanotte just minutes later.

The 2-1 win was a nervy one, and it perhaps encapsulates why Chelsea are far from the end product, even after a busy summer transfer window.

Cole Palmer’s reoccurring groin problem is a major worry for Chelsea given just how reliant they currently are on the England star’s undoubted match-winning quality, with their botched deal for attacking midfield alternative Xavi Simons threatening to haunt Maresca.

Some reports are claiming that a new problem in that same groin for Palmer means that he faces several weeks out (Simon Phillips), and you can make a case that Bunonanottte isn’t at the level required to replace the ex-Man City star on a regular basis.

Lincoln City (A) – EFL Cup

Brighton (H) – Premier League

Benfica (H) – Champions League

Liverpool (H) – Premier League

Nottingham Forest (A) – Premier League

Ajax (H) – Champions League

Sunderland (H) – Premier League

Tottenham (A) – Premier League

Maresca also wanted a new goalkeeper and centre-back in the summer window (Simon Phillips), amid doubts surrounding the suitability of Robert Sanchez as number one, which were made all the more prevalent by his sending off against Man United last weekend.

Chelsea are expected to go back in for Mike Maignan on a potential pre-contract after failing to strike a deal in the summer, while the Blues are also actively looking at central defensive options.

Maresca is light in that area right now, with the Italian complaining that he’s unable to rest key defenders. The consensus is that they also need to bring in a world-class, experienced centre-half to stable the ship, if Chelsea are serious about challenging for the Premier League title.

Chelsea informed Vinícius Jr could be open to Stamford Bridge move

Even with their glaring defensive needs, journalist Graeme Bailey has now told TBR Football that an audacious move for Real Madrid superstar Vinícius Jr is on the cards for 2026.

Real Madrid emblem

The Brazil international kissed Real’s badge after his goal in their 4-1 La Liga win over Levante on Tuesday, but behind-closed-doors, things are proving far more complicated.

There is apparent “frustration” aimed at Alonso over Vinicius’ role in the squad, and talks over a new deal have stalled due to extortionate wage demands as his contract ticks down towards expiry in 2027.

Real have apparently been clear to the 25-year-old – agree a new contract by next summer or be sold.

According to Bailey, Chelsea have been informed that Vinicius could be open to a Premier League move if they give him the opportunity, and sources are “insisting” that the winger’s exit is indeed a possibility.

He has commanded a mammoth price tag in recent years, but by the time next summer rolls around, Vinicius will have just one year remaining on his deal. That would put Perez in a very vulnerable position, and the Los Blancos chief could be forced to sell for a lesser fee.

In terms of whether Chelsea should capitalise on this, Vinicius is one of those special players you build a team around, and the South American could help to ease the burden on Palmer’s shoulders as Maresca’s standout creative force.

Of course, Chelsea would face major competition, with Arsenal, PSG, Bayern and Liverpool named as other suitors, so it would still be far from easy.

Lees, Gay tons help Durham put the squeeze on Yorkshire

Alex Lees excelled against his former county as he and fellow centurion Emilio Gay ensured Durham dominated day two of their Rothesay County Championship clash with Yorkshire at the Banks Homes Riverside. At the halfway stage of this Division One fixture, Durham have control having replied strongly to a first-innings 307 with 264 for 1 from 63.2 overs, bad light curtailing the day just before 5pm.Yorkshire had seemingly enjoyed a healthy day one as they compiled 295 for 8 in challenging batting conditions. But, in easing conditions, Durham pressed ahead to give themselves a great chance of ending a two-game losing streak at the start of the summer.Lees led the way with 148 not out off 194 balls, while Gay’s unbeaten 105 off 168 represented an expert supporting role. They shared an unbroken 242 – a Durham second-wicket partnership record in first-class matches against Yorkshire.Durham wrapped up Yorkshire’s tail in the first five overs of the day, Ben Raine and Matthew Potts striking, before captain Lees and fellow left-hander Gay united from mid-morning onwards. Thirty-three overs were lost to bad light. The pair came together after George Hill removed prospective England Test opener Ben McKinney for 6, caught at second slip by Adam Lyth, leaving Durham at 22 for 1 after six overs.Durham’s opening partnership is one made up of two players at contrasting stages of their careers.Even though it would be a surprise to see England return to 32-year-old Lees, who played the last of his 10 Tests in 2022, it is too early to write him off given he continues to rack up the runs for his second county.McKinney, however, is very much England’s future. There is increasing talk that the tall 20-year-old left-hander will make his Test debut this summer having impressed for the Lions in Australia over the winter before making a first-innings 153 in defeat to Warwickshire here last weekend. But this wasn’t a day when he advanced his cause. He got himself in a tangle against a full delivery angled in from Hill and departed early.Like Lees and McKinney, Gay is another left-hander who has been talked about as an England possible in recent times. This was his first century for Durham since a move from Northamptonshire late last summer.Lees was strong on both sides of the wicket but drove particularly well, while Gay was far more circumspect against a visiting attack who never got a foothold.Hill and new-ball partner Jack White were okay, but New Zealand quick Ben Sears took time to settle on debut, bowling 12 overs at a cost of 56.Incidentally, Sears had been the first wicket to fall on day two when he was bowled by Raine, who finished with 4 for 64 from 24 overs. Potts had Dom Bess caught in the deep pulling for 66 to wrap up Yorkshire’s innings. There was no doubt that Durham have had the better of the batting conditions. The second day was played under a much brighter skies for example, and the life has gone out of the pitch. But Lees and Gay impressively took advantage.Lees survived a close shave with a run out on 67 shortly after lunch and went on to reach his century off 126 balls, by which stage Durham were 162 for 1.Bad light forced an early tea – 224 for 1 – but just beforehand Lees hit four fours off a Matthew Revis over which cost 19.Gay reached his century off 163 balls shortly after the resumption, but he only faced three more balls and it was only a brief evening session because of the light.Meanwhile, when Durham come to bowl again during the next two days, they may have to do it without seamer Paul Coughlin, who suffered an abdominal injury whilst bowling during the opening day.

The new version of Arsenal icon Dennis Bergkamp is now playing for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been blessed to be able to watch some terrific midfield talents play for the club over the years, from Luka Modric, to Gareth Bale, to Rafa van der Vaart, to Moussa Dembele.

Modric, now 40, is still playing and shining for AC Milan in the Serie A, whilst the other three have since hung up their boots and moved on from football.

In the present day, Joao Palhinha has scored three goals in 11 matches in all competitions to start his career with the club on loan from Bayern Munich, but he is not a creative talent like Modric, van der Vaart, or Bale were.

Ranking Tottenham's best modern-day creators

The 2018 Ballon d’OR winner has to be up there as one of the best creators in Tottenham’s modern history. He laid on 24 assists in 160 matches for the club in all competitions before his move to Real Madrid, per Transfermarkt.

Christian Eriksen, however, has a strong claim to be above Modric in the ranking because he created 88 goals in 305 appearances for Spurs during his time in North London.

Dele Alli may rank between the two with his return of 59 assists in 269 matches for the club in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, which would place Modric third, Dele second, and Eriksen first.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, there is a new player at Spurs who may top all three of them and has the potential to be the Premier League’s new Dennis Bergkamp for Thomas Frank.

Tottenham may have unearthed their new Dennis Bergkamp

As much as Tottenham fans may not want to admit it, Bergkamp is a Premier League legend who used to light up English pitches with his creativity and invention for Arsenal.

The Dutch playmaker assisted 116 goals in 422 games for the Gunners, one every 3.63 matches on average, per Transfermarkt, which illustrates the creative ability that he brought to North London.

Xavi Simons may be the next version of Bergkamp in the Premier League after his move to Spurs from RB Leipzig during the summer transfer window.

The Netherlands international may only have one assist to his name for Tottenham to date, but his form in Germany and some of the promising signs that he has shown in the Premier League so far suggest that there is far more to come from him.

Simons created 21 goals in two seasons with Leipzig in all competitions after his move from PSV in the summer of 2023, which shows that he can provide assists on a regular basis.

As you can see in the table above, the Dutchman’s games per ‘big chance’ created rate was particularly impressive in both of those seasons in Germany, which suggests that he creates ‘big chances’ more frequently than Bergkamp registered assists for Arsenal.

His performance against Leeds United last weekend was a great example of inventiveness and creativity. On several occasions, Simons produced a moment of magic to open up the opposition’s defence when it looked secure, lifting the ball over defenders or playing through balls through the eye of a needle.

The assists will come for Simons, his history with Leipzig suggests as much. It just seems like a matter of time if he keeps doing what he was doing against Leeds; providing creativity, creating chances for teammates, being the spark in midfield.

His central midfield berth against the newly-promoted side could help him to be the creative hub of the team moving forward, and the Premier League’s next Bergkamp.

Like his compatriot, Simons is an incredibly creative and inventive player who can make things out of nothing, but it is now down to him to add the goals and assists to his game to match for the Arsenal man’s legacy and go down as one of Tottenham’s most creative players in their history.

Tom Lammonby hundred seals the deal for Somerset

Unbroken century partnership with Tom Abell extinguishes Durham hopes

A superbly judged unbeaten century by Tom Lammonby helped Somerset maintain their excellent form with a seven-wicket defeat of Durham in the Rothesay County Championship match at the Banks Homes Riverside. The victory moves Lewis Gregory’s side up to fourth in the Division One table, although most of the other games in this round have yet to finish.Resuming on 71 for one and needing 194 more runs to clinch their third victory in succession, Lewis Gregory’s batsmen encountered few problems on a pitch where 31 wickets had fallen in two days.Instead, they reached their target in mid-afternoon having lost only two wickets on this third day. Lammonby finished on 104 not out and Tom Abell, with whom he had put on an unbroken 139 for the fourth wicket, was unbeaten on 73.Yet Durham had enjoyed the perfect start to the morning when Gregory, was caught behind by Ollie Robinson off Ben Raine for 38 in the second over of the day. But Lammonby and the new batsman, James Rew made light of that setback by adding 55 runs in 15 overs and seizing on some wayward bowling by the callow Durham seamers.Just before noon, Alex Lees brought on Colin Ackermann to bowl his off-spin from the Lumley End and this change brought a much needed breakthrough for the home side when Rew, who had looked in little trouble while making 31, chipped a half-drive straight to Lees, himself, at short extra cover. That wicket left Somerset on 128 for three but it did not halt the visitors’ steady progress towards their target. Lammonby became only the second batsman in the match to make a half-century, reaching that landmark off 70 balls and having hit five boundaries, and Durham’s need for further wickets was made plain when Raine and Mitch Killeen were brought back into the attack around 40 minutes after they had been taken off. Those bowling changes made no difference. Lammonby and Abell continued their steady accumulation, maidens were rarities and Somerset reached lunch on 174 for three, 91 short of their target, with Lammonby on 65 not out and Abell unbeaten on 20.Five overs into the afternoon session Durham threw away a faint chance to salvage the game when Lammonby was dropped on 69 by James Minto off Daniel Hogg at deep square leg, the 17-year-old shelling a straightforward chance after the ball had been pulled straight to him. That escape seemed to energise the Somerset batsmen and the remaining 70 runs came quickly. Lammonby took three fours off a Minto over and soon after reached his century off 149 balls, having hit a dozen fours. Shortly afterwards, Abell reached his fifty off 122 balls and victory was confirmed when Abell clipped Killeen through midwicket for a final boundary. On a tough day for Durham’s bowlers, Raine finished with one for 50, Ackermann one for 40 and Killeen one for 67

Leeds brewing biggest homegrown talent since Gray in "exciting" 18-year-old

One thing that the current Leeds United squad seems to be lacking is the next great academy product. Centre-back Pascal Struijk is a graduate of their academy, but at 26 years of age, he is firmly established in the first team.

18-year-old Scottish attacker Sam Chambers has played for the senior team, but has not even been on the bench this season,

Of course, over the last few years, some excellent players have come through the Leeds academy system and made it to the first team. Kalvin Phillips is one name who springs to mind, becoming a key player in the midfield at Elland Road before moving to Manchester City.

The other player who fits the bill was Archie Gray.

Archie Gray’s career at Leeds

The 19-year-old is arguably one of the most successful academy graduates at Elland Road in recent years. He has deep family ties to Leeds, and came through their academy before breaking into the first team.

In total, the versatile midfielder, who was born in Durham, played 52 games for the club. All those appearances came in the 2023/24 campaign, a season in which he chipped in with two assists.

After a successful debut season in professional football for Gray, the youngster, who can also play at right-back and did so 30 times for the Whites, secured a big transfer. He joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2024 for a fee of around £30m.

Since moving down to North London, the 19-year-old has played 48 games for the Lilywhites. He’s once again shown great versatility, playing full-back on both sides, at centre-back and in his natural midfield role. Of course, Gray was also a Europa League winner last term.

Since Gray, Leeds haven’t had a top academy prospect break into the first-team squad and establish themselves. Well, perhaps the next big thing is waiting in the wings.

Leeds’ best academy talent since Gray

Certainly, if Gray is able to break through under Daniel Farke and become an established first-team player, the same door could be open for future academy talents on the books at Elland Road.

Well, perhaps sooner or later, that player will be Scotland youth attacker Lewis Pirie. The versatile forward joined Leeds back in 2023 from Scottish outfit Aberdeen. After starting out in the under-18s side, he’s broken into the under-21s this season.

In his first two full seasons as a Leeds academy player, his record shows why he is considered such an “exciting” prospect. At least, that is a word that former Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin used to describe him.

Indeed, Pirie has played 29 games for the club over the past couple of years. In that time, he’s found the back of the net on seven occasions, and assisted one goal, too.

Having played 1701 minutes, he has a minutes per goal and assist record of 213 minutes.

The 18-year-old is has already built up a strong reputation for himself. He can operate on both flanks and up front, and has even played deeper as a number 10 for the Leeds academy.

As we saw with Gray, Farke loves versatility, which could be a key difference to helping him reach the first-team.

Stats from Transfermarkt

With the versatility he offers and the clear goal threat he can bring to the table, Pirie could be the perfect option if Farke wishes to bring another academy star into the first team at Elland Road.

It will be fascinating to see if the Whites boss will look to bring through another young talent into the frame. If so, that player could very well be Pirie.

Quem será “baixa forçada” no Timão é Fagner.
