Rob Key: 'Pure talent' Jofra Archer ready to hit the ground running

Jofra Archer will be ready to hit the ground running, as and when his return to Test cricket comes, despite having bowled just 18 overs for Sussex against Durham in his long-awaited comeback to first-class cricket at Chester-le-Street last week. That is the view of Rob Key, England Men’s managing director, who is confident that Archer’s slow but steady return from a series of career-threatening injuries means he’ll be ready to slot straight back into England’s starting XI, either in next week’s second Test against India at Edgbaston, or – perhaps more likely – in the subsequent third Test at Lord’s, beginning July 10.Archer was this week named in England’s 15-man squad for the second Test, meaning he is in line to play the format for the first time since the tour of India in February 2021. England have played 52 Tests in the intervening years, during which time Archer’s career was left in limbo due to multiple operations on his right elbow, and a stress fracture of the back. However, he made a successful return to white-ball cricket for England in May last year, with appearances at each of the last two ICC global events: the T20 World Cup in June 2024, and the Champions Trophy in February this year.Related

  • Jofra Archer added to England squad for second Test

Though a broken thumb sustained at the IPL delayed his return to red-ball cricket, Archer himself confirmed this week that his body was ready to hold up to the demands of the longer format, having returned figures of 18-8-32-1 on a flat deck against Durham in the County Championship.”To see him back will be brilliant,” Key said at a Rothesay media event in London. “He’s an unbelievable talent, and it’s been such a long road. For two years now, [we’ve] mapped it out: from T20s and four-over spells, into 50-over cricket to build up his robustness, to now. He has been doing so much work in the lead-up – even when he’s not playing – to building up that resilience to being able to play, because he’s a serious talent.”England’s impressive victory in the series opener at Headingley, allied to the nine-day turnaround between games, might persuade the selectors to stick with an unchanged frontline seam attack of Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue. That could also enable Archer to be released for at least two days of Sussex’s next County Championship fixture against Warwickshire, after his county coach Paul Farbrace suggested he might benefit from more red-ball overs under his belt. However, Key liked what he saw of Archer’s rhythm at Chester-le-Street, having tracked his performance on the county live stream, and insisted he was ready for selection, come what may.Rob Key, England Men’s managing director, speaking at a Rothesay media event in London•Getty Images

“Jofra is such a talent,” Key said. “He was straight on the money. Bowling on a slow pitch, with good pace. He ain’t gonna forget how to bowl, so when we have that call, we’re not concerned. He will be fit and available for both [Tests]. Whether he could play both, we’ll find that out afterwards, if he did play at Edgbaston.”Despite his long absence from red-ball cricket, Key likened Archer to Mark Wood – currently injured, but on course to be available for next month’s final Test of the series – for his ability to pick up from where he left off, without the need to build up his workloads.”The spectrum for that is Mark Wood to other guys who you feel need a longer [lead up],” Key said. “You saw those guys playing in the last Test; they got better the more they bowled. Mark Wood is someone that could just turn up after bowling a bit in the nets, like he did at Headingley in the Ashes, and bowl 96mph, swinging in and hitting a length.”On that sort of scale, Jofra is close to the Mark Wood end. He’s a pretty pure talent. There’s not a lot of moving parts to his action in terms of complications, and he’s 30 years old now, so he knows exactly what he’s doing and what he’s about. So it’s more of a question of him just getting back into red-ball cricket.”We’ve picked him in the squad, and we’ll see how the conditions are. We’ve got decisions to make because these next two Tests are very close together, and you want to be able to sustain that pressure throughout these back-to-back Test matches. So we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. At the moment, he’s in the squad [but] any of those players can go back to county cricket as well.”With Jamie Overton and Sam Cook also in England’s Test squad, plus last season’s break-out star Gus Atkinson likely to come into contention later in the series, Key was upbeat about the state of England’s bowling stocks – both for the remainder of this summer, and the Ashes tour to follow.”There was a time where you thought it was all about Wood and Archer, and we needed that X-factor pace – but now we’ve got a few of them,” Key said. “It’s so encouraging. You need bowlers for all conditions, [and] not just the Ashes. You need a pack of bowlers that all complement each other.”Jofra is another piece in that puzzle as Woody will be if he comes back at the end of the series. We don’t know who’s the next great England opening partnership – the next Broad-Anderson – because there’s a number of those options that could be the mainstay of England bowlers for years. I can’t wait to see who that will be.”

Nuno personally makes West Ham decision about signing former Nottingham Forest ace

West Ham United boss Nuno Espírito Santo is already having a major say on the club’s incomings and outgoings, with the tactician making his mark yet again following a key transfer decision.

Nuno set to spearhead West Ham overhaul in East London

Almost immediately after replacing Graham Potter in late September, Nuno wasted no time at all in dropping his predecessor’s vice-captain, James Ward-Prowse, from the Portuguese’s first ever Hammers matchday squad to face Everton.

Nuno’s decision to exclude Ward-Prowse from West Ham’s first-team raised eyebrows, but it was clear that the midfielder, despite being a mainstay figure in Potter’s engine room, wasn’t part of his long-term plans.

The 51-year-old had already axed Ward-Prowse once before, during the Englishman’s loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season, where he sent him back to Rush Green midway through the campaign.

While the exact reasons behind his exclusion remain a mystery, it’s claimed that Nuno wants to prioritise energetic midfielders who can get about the pitch more tenaciously, with summer arrival Soungoutou Magassa immediately jumping into Ward-Prowse’s place.

More key calls that Nuno will be forced to make surround the long-term future of Niclas Füllkrug and West Ham’s striker options.

Fullkrug’s recently sustained thigh problem is expected to keep him out for several weeks, and the German’s injury woes are nothing new.

Since joining West Ham, he has struggled with recurring fitness problems — missing 28 games for West Ham and Germany combined last season alone. His return to the treatment table piles pressure on Nuno’s available attacking options, but January could come as a lifeline.

In light of Fullkrug’s latest absence, there is growing speculation that West Ham will look to bring in a new striker during the winter window, and it is believed that the Hammers are targeting Man United striker Joshua Zirkzee as a potential option.

Interestingly, it is reported that Nuno could even solve their centre-forward crisis before the window reopens.

West Ham have apparently been offered the chance to sign former Forest striker Emmanuel Dennis by representatives (Hammers News), and according to The Mail, there’s been tentative interest from their side too.

Nuno makes final decision on signing Emmanuel Dennis for West Ham

However, the outlet also reports that Nuno has blocked any West Ham move for Dennis, with the manager personally stepping in to stop the Nigerian from sealing a free transfer to the London Stadium.

emmanuel-dennis-transfer-gossip-leeds-united-nottingham-forest-alf-haaland-farke

The 27-year-old, who bagged 10 goals and six assists in 33 Premier League outings for Watford in 2021/2022, has failed to recapture that form ever since.

Dennis was on the books during Nuno’s tenure at Forest, but was never used — instead being sent out on loan to Istanbul Basaksehir, Watford and Blackburn Rovers until his contract was terminated by mutual consent in August.

Orel Mangala called his ex-City Ground teammate a “magician” during their time together at the City Ground, but this opinion definitely isn’t shared by Nuno, who’d rather wait until January to bring in a more elite-level number nine.

emmanuel-dennis-nottingham-forest-leeds-united-transfer-gossip-farke-bamford

This is definitely the right call, and Irons supporters would arguably much rather see highly-promising young striker Callum Marshall get a good run out.

The Northern Irishman, who’s made just two senior appearances for West Ham, scored for fun at youth level and already boasts 13 senior caps for his country.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Huddersfield, where he bagged 10 goals in all competitions, and now could be Marshall’s baptism of fire.

Joseph stars in rain-shortened chase to put West Indies 1-0 up

Tazmin Brits’ half-century and Nadine de Klerk’s rearguard proved insufficient for South Africa in the first ODI

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Jun-2025West Indies 180 for 6 (Joseph 60, Matthews 40, Taylor 30, Hlubi 3-50) beat South Africa 232 for 9 (Brits 57, de Klerk 42, Luus 32, Alleyne 2-35, Ramharack 2-44) by four wickets (DLS method)A half-century from Qiana Joseph and solid support acts from the experienced duo of Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor helped West Indies chase down a rain-reduced target in Barbados to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against South Africa.Earlier, Tazmin Brits made a brisk half-century that made her the second-fastest South Africa woman to make 1000 ODI runs. However, it wasn’t enough as West Indies followed up a good bowling effort with a comfortable chase.Set a target of 233, Joseph and Matthews got West Indies off to a strong start. Matthews hit four fours and a six as she moved along to a 44-ball 40 before medium pacer Ayanda Hlubi broke the 88-run opening partnership. Joseph kept West Indies’ momentum up before Hlubi struck again to dismiss Joseph for 60 off 58 balls, with ten fours and a six.Joseph’s dismissal opened a window of opportunity for South Africa, as West Indies lost two more wickets for the addition of 21 runs to go to 127 for 4. But then came the rain, and the long delay led to the target being revised to 180 from 34 overs.Ayanda Hlubi picked up three wickets•CWIAfter the game resumed, Taylor took charge of the chase with an unbeaten 30 off 34, and despite South Africa claiming two more wickets, got West Indies over the line with two overs to spare.South Africa, after winning the toss, also had a good start, with Brits and captain Laura Wolvaardt sharing a 73-run opening stand. However, wickets from spinners Karishma Ramharack and Afy Fletcher, combined with a couple of run-outs, pushed South Africa from 73 for no loss to 104 for 5.Sune Luus and Sinalo Jafta steadied the ship with a 40-run stand that was broken by Matthews. That dismissal sparked another mini-collapse, with South Africa losing three wickets for 23 runs. But Nadine de Klerk made 42 off 38 balls from No. 8 to take South Africa to a decent total, which might have tested West Indies had it not been for the revision.Ramharack and Aaliyah Alleyne finished with two wickets each while Matthews, Fletcher and Jannillea Glasgow took one apiece.

Pep Guardiola feels "bad" for "incredible" £150,000-a-week Man City player

Pep Guardiola admits he feels bad for not giving Kalvin Phillips more playing time at Manchester City.

The midfielder made a big-money move from Leeds to the Etihad in 2022 but has made only two Premier League starts for Guardiola’s side, while loan spells at West Ham and Ipswich have also proved difficult.

Phillips, on £150,000-a-week, has not played for City since December 2023, but is now back training with City after an Achilles injury scuppered his chances of a summer move.

Asked why it had not worked out at City for the 29-year-old, Guardiola said:

City have had a stuttering start to the season, with Sunday’s draw against Arsenal leaving them eight points behind leaders Liverpool after only five games.

Guardiola believes the biggest difference to their years of dominance is a change in the prevailing playing style of the majority of teams.

The Catalan cited veteran Italian coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who spent nine years with Atalanta before moving to Roma this summer, as the key influencer in a more combative era.

Guardiola spoke about his players’ fatigue after the Arsenal draw, and he said: “More than the physicality, it’s the way that the opponents play.

“They are more and more aggressive in all departments, more man marking, don’t leave you spaces. In the last one or two years, it changed a lot. I don’t know if it will come back (to) what it was before and the teams have to adapt in a different way.

“You see Bournemouth, you see Brentford with Thomas Frank and now with Tottenham, going a lot in that way. And that’s why football is so nice, not always is it the same and you have to adapt with the players you have, the way you’re thinking, and especially in the way you want to attack.”

Next up for City is a trip to Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, where Guardiola will change his side for the first time in four games.

He confirmed James Trafford will start in goal but one player who will not feature is defender Abdukodir Khusanov, who is expected to miss three games with the injury he picked up against Arsenal.

The young Uzbek has started the last four games, and Guardiola spoke glowingly about his potential.

“He’s been really, really good against the tough, tough opponents we faced,” said the City boss. “He’s so young. He came in a season that was difficult for us. He’s incredible, he’s learned quick. You smell that he’s an incredible top signing for the next many, many years at this club. This guy will make a career in this club.”

Rapid Fire review – Shreyas Iyer’s hat-trick of sixes turned the match

Orange Cap tableIt’s looking increasingly likely that B Sai Sudharsan, the Gujarat Titans (GT) opener, will not have to give up that Orange Cap he has been wearing for a long, long time now. He’s done for the tournament with 759 runs, but the nearest competitor to still be active at this stage is Virat Kohli, but the RCB hero is well behind with 614 runs at No. 5. That’s a gap of 145 runs. Not impossible, of course. It might not be impossible for the next in line either, even if it feels somewhat improbable. Shreyas Iyer, the PBKS captain, is just behind Kohli at No. 6 with 603 runs. He had been well behind in that race, around the No. 10-No. 11 mark, for the longest time, but the 87 not out of 41 balls he scored to knock MI out of IPL 2025 has made him the sixth batter past the 600-run mark this season.Behind Sai Sudharsan and above third-placed GT captain Shubman Gill is Suryakumar Yadav, who finished his stellar IPL 2025 with 717 runs after scoring 44 in Qualifier 2. It was, incredibly, Suryakumar’s 16 successive score of 25-plus in T20s, but not enough to put MI in the final. Before we move to the wicket-takers, here’s another one for you to check out: the most prolific six-hitters’ list, which Iyer could well end up topping by the time the season is done.Suryakumar, meanwhile, is right on top of ESPNcricinfo’s MVP table.Purple Cap tableAs things stand, Josh Hazlewood of RCB is the only bowler with a realistic chance of toppling GT’s Prasidh Krishna from the perch. Hazlewood has 21 wickets. Prasidh, the leader, has 25. It would still need five wickets, though.Trent Boult of MI picked up then wicket of Prabhsimran Singh on Sunday night, and that took his tally for the season to 22, which has him in third place, behind Prasidh and Noor Ahmad of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who has 24.Of the other bowlers to still be in the fray, PBKS’ Arshdeep Singh is at No. 7 with 18 wickets after going wicketless against MI.And here are some other IPL 2025 tables that show the season’s best performers in different aspects of the T20 game. Harry Kane eclipses Cristiano Ronaldo AND Lionel Messi with storming start to 2025-26 as Bayern Munich star bags another goal against Club Brugge

Harry Kane made another piece of history on Wednesday night as the Bayern Munich striker hit 20 goals for the season in just 12 games for Bayern Munich. In a quite remarkable stat, this is faster than either Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi managed to achieve the feat in their careers. Kane struck the second goal of the game as Bayern comfortably beat Club Brugge 4-0 in the Champions League.

  • Kane eclipses Ronaldo & Messi with outstanding goal record

According to Opta, Kane’s 14th-minute strike in the emphatic victory against Brugge meant that he had reached 20 goals in a domestic season quicker than either of the two men often regarded as the best of all time, and without doubt viewed as the best of this generation.

But Ronaldo’s best record at the start of a season was 20 goals in 13 games in 2014-15, while Messi never reached 20 strikes in fewer than 17 games – achieving 17 three times.

This only goes to further demonstrate the sheer levels of greatness at which Kane is operating so far in 2025-26, as he begins to stake an early claim to be in the running for the Ballon d’Or in 2026 – though he will most likely need to lead England to winning the World Cup in order to get his hands on the prestigious individual award.

Kompany makes Messi & Ronaldo comparison

Manager Vincent Kompany lauded Kane’s start to the season after he bagged his 19th goal of the campaign in Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund last weekend, making the comparison with two of the greatest ever to play the game.

“Harry Kane can of course still improve, even though he has been more than brilliant so far for us," said the Belgian. "I think [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo have set the bar so high that you feel like scoring in the manner Kane is scoring right now should be normal, but what he is doing is really outstanding. He worked so hard for the team tonight and was once again very important for us.

"We like that all experts are asking themselves 'who was our striker tonight? Who was the attacking midfielder? Who was the playmaker?' – That is how we know we have a fluent attack and that we’re doing it right," he explained.

He continued: "I can't teach Harry Kane how to head the ball the way he does it. Some things you can't teach – the feeling for the area, for example. He just does it so well.”

  • Kane speaks as fantastic run of form continues

Kane told after the result against Dortmund: "Of course, I'm still there to score goals and help the team. But I also dropped a little deeper with the ball, defended my own penalty area without the ball, and picked up second balls to find my team-mates behind the opposing line with long balls. There were a lot of good things there, and I feel good physically."

He added: "I'm confident about my game overall. I always look forward to a match – knowing how we want to play and how we work together. There's a special bond within the team. Everyone always gives their all. And that's a valuable asset."

2026 could be a defining year for Kane

Kane’s form so far this season has been nothing short of exemplary. We thought we had already seen the very best the England captain has to offer, but then he reaches a whole new level that was not deemed possible.

The 32-year-old struck 44 goals in 45 games in his first season for Bayern, a record which is already looking easily accessible as he closes in on half of that total before we have even reached November. There is every chance at this stage that the 2025-26 season becomes the crowning one of Kane’s career, if he continues to shine as much as he is currently.

Bayern look imperious in the Champions League, having won three out of three with a goal difference of +10, while the Bundesliga title already looks like a procession as the champions are five points clear, having already beaten second-placed RB Leipzig 6-0. Then, of course, comes the small matter of the World Cup in North America next summer.

Kane recently reached the landmark of 400 club career goals. He said of the achievement on social media: "So proud to have reached 400 club goals! Too many people and team-mates to thank who have helped me get to that number but couldn’t have done it without everyone along the way. More to come!!"

Crystal Palace now rivalling Tottenham for £43m former Real Madrid defender

Crystal Palace are now rivalling Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of a former Real Madrid player, who “never puts a foot wrong.”

Palace keen on new centre-back with Guehi set for exit

Marc Guehi was hardly short of suitors before the international break, with the centre-back’s move to Liverpool falling through on deadline day, but the Englishman has once again put himself in the shop window courtesy of his performance against Wales.

The Three Lions haven’t conceded a single goal in World Cup qualifying, with Guehi helping his side continue their fantastic defensive record against Wales last week, while also assisting England’s opening two goals.

The 25-year-old has remained a consummate professional, having not downed tools in order to force through a move, but it appears as though an exit is inevitable, given that the Palace captain was left very unhappy with his move to Anfield breaking down.

Consequently, Crystal Palace have now started looking at potential replacements for the defender, and they have now joined the race for Lazio defender Mario Gila, who is also being targeted by Tottenham, Brighton & Hove Albion and Everton.

That is according to a report from Caught Offside, which states all the aforementioned Premier League clubs are keeping close tabs on Gila, who could command a huge transfer fee.

Crystal Palace now plotting move for £31m "freak of nature" to replace Wharton

The Eagles are looking to sign a new central midfielder, amid widespread interest in Adam Wharton.

ByDominic Lund Oct 15, 2025

The Italian club are only willing to listen to offers in the region of €45m – €50m (£39m – £43m), which is regarded as an affordable fee for Spurs, but would be a club-record signing for Palace, eclipsing the £32m spent on Christian Benteke back in 2016.

Gila could be exciting replacement for Guehi

Of course, no Crystal Palace fan will want their FA Cup-winning captain to leave, but given that he has shown no interest in signing a new contract, it is wise to start thinking about potential replacements.

Moreover, the Lazio defender could be an exciting option, given that he is experienced in Europe, having featured in the Conference League, Europa League and Champions League with Lazio.

The ex-Real Madrid man has also received plaudits from Lazio sporting director Igli Tare, who seemed to suggest he is destined for the top level, saying: “He is fast, intelligent and never puts a foot wrong. He can become one of the top 3-4 defenders in the world and it wouldn’t surprise me if Real wanted him back.”

As such, it would be a real coup if Palace were able to sign Gila, but the capture of Yeremy Pino in the summer showed that Selhurst Park is now becoming an attractive destination for top players.

"Unbelievable" manager eager to take over at Man Utd with Amorim on the brink

An “unbelievable” manager would be eager to take over as Manchester United manager, with Ruben Amorim now on the brink, it has been revealed.

Amorim facing the sack after Brentford defeat

It has now been revealed that Amorim is on the brink of being sacked, following yet another disappointing performance in the Premier League, with Man United suffering a 3-1 defeat at Brentford and falling to 14th in the table.

The uncertainty over the 40-year-old’s future is now growing, with one insider saying: “He [Amorim] looks knackered, he knows it’s not working.”

Players are said to be unconvinced by the former Sporting CP manager’s in-game decisions and reluctance to alter his tactics, which clearly aren’t working, having lost the majority of his Premier League games since taking over last November.

In the aforementioned TEAMtalk report, it is revealed that Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is one of the potential Amorim replacements under consideration by INEOS, and there has now been an encouraging further update.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Glasner would jump at the chance to manage Man United if the job became available, saying on talkSPORT: “My information is if Glasner was offered the Manchester United job, he would take it in a heartbeat.”

Jacobs makes it clear that the “pressure is building” on the United boss, with INEOS now “succession planning”, although the board are still backing him heading into the game against Sunderland at Old Trafford this Saturday.

"Unbelievable" Glasner could be major Amorim upgrade

A record of 34 points from 33 Premier League games is almost relegation form, so it is difficult to see Amorim surviving much longer, and Wayne Rooney has suggested the Palace manager could have what it takes to become the new United boss.

Unlike the former Sporting CP boss, the Austrian has been able to successfully implement a three-at-the-back system at his current club, with Rooney saying: “I don’t want to go back to Man United but I’m watching Crystal Palace play three at the back and this looks incredible, look’s brilliant.”

Lauded as “unbelievable” by Palace chairman Steve Parish, the 51-year-old led the Eagles to FA Cup glory last season, and his side are now on an 18-game unbeaten run, which is by far the longest undefeated streak of any team in Europe’s top five leagues.
